Businessman slain Moleboheng Chaha

SHARPEVILLE. - A Putswa-Stena, Sharpeville taxi owner Paseka ‘Percy’ Tshabalala was brutally murdered last week. The horrific scene took place at his house in front of his wife, Itumeleng Tshabalala and their three kids. This happened after three men gained entrance to the home after removing one of the aluminium windows in the early hours of the morning. When Sedibeng Ster arrived at the scene, the grief-stricken family was still in disbelief over the death of their loved-one. Paseka’s wife explained how the three robbers took all the money and phones and killed her husband. She says that her husband bravely tried to fight the three men who had entered their home but they overpowered him in the end. “My husband fought with the robbers, but they tied him up and put his belt around his neck which is what caused him to die in the end. One of them entered my bedroom and told me that all they wanted was money and that they were not intending to harm us in any way. He demanded the keys to the safe and also demanded that I give him all the money from the taxi collections. “He warned his friend not to pull the belt too tight on my husband’s neck, but sadly it was too late,” says a shocked Itumeleng. Sharpeville Police Spokesperson Captain Attie Loate says, “We are investigating a case of armed robbery and murder. At this moment, we cannot say for sure whether it was just a robbery gone wrong or if there were other sinister reasons behind the break-in. Investigations are ongoing.” Loate urges members of the community with information that can help solve this case to come forward. VUT double murder a mystery Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Residents of Vanderbijlpark are still reeling with shock after a double murder took place on Saturday. Two students of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) were found dead at their commune. The brutal double murder is still an eerie a mystery. The two girls, both in their early 20’s, were strangled and shot in the head. Black cloth was shoved in their mouths. Preliminary police investigations indicate that certain items were stolen and laptops and cell phones of both the deceased were missing. What police finds puzzling is that there was no forced entry. The commune’s gates were locked and no-one heard anything. Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale says a double murder case has been opened. “We found these girls in their night dresses - one on the floor with blood spilling from her head and the other on a bed. They had both been shot in the head. “The suspect or suspects ‘worked’ as cleanly as possible. The scene was spotless. The security doors were locked. Strangely, no one heard anything.” Neither the landlord nor the caretaker was available for media questions. Sedibeng Ster investigated and found that the murdered girls lived in a Christian student home and were said to attend a particular church. No-one from the commune wanted to talk to the media. Two other girls said anonymously that they feared for their lives as nothing like this has ever happened in their area before. A neighbour and also a landlord unknown to Sedibeng Ster said they were stunned by the incident: “I still don’t believe what happened here. I’m still shocked by the way these girls were killed. VEREENIGING. - Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), Governmental and Non Governmental organisations and the community at large recently said enough is enough when they made stops at various houses in the CBD of Vereeniging known to be harbouring drug dealers and prostitutes. This event which closed off the women’s month calender, aimed to bring back dignity to women’s rights. At one of the alleged brothels, officials from different governmental departments found young girls who told them that they were from as far as Durban. “We came here looking for jobs and this is where we ended up.” The girls stated that when they moved from their homes, they never imagined that they would end up taking drugs and selling their bodies to make a living.

The people running the brothel managed to get away before the officials arrived. ELM acting Mayor and MMC for Corporate Services Khethiwe Ntombela said, “Human trafficking is a serious offence and as government we are totally against it. There are due procedures that have to be followed when doing some of the things and during the march we noticed that the community had gotten very angry hence we decided to stop it.”

Two children killed, one raped during caravan park mayhem Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Two boys between the ages of 16-18 were stabbed to death after a fight broke out between two groups and a 15-year-old girl was raped while some were left with multiple injuries at Emfuleni caravan park in Vanderbijlpark on Saturday. The Tropika Vaal Beach Party Experience Festival that was supposed to be hosted at Dickson Park as part of the Vaal River Carnival was cancelled due to the bad weather and that is when, it is said, a group of children as young as 14 years, decided to drive further to host their own bash at the caravan park. Much to their ‘delight’ they were met by a cashier at the gate. There were apparently no age restrictions as the cashier collected entrance fees, giving receipts to only a few. Most tickets that were seen by Sedibeng Ster did not have amounts and mini bus taxis full of young people only paid for one single ticket to enter the park. It is also alleged that

the cashier collected money from groups but let them in without issuing tickets and this resulted in a stampede. Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Library Information Services, Parks and Cemeteries, Shaka Radebe, apparently also arrived at the scene and instructed the cashier to close the gate and beef up the security. The situation had by then already gone out of control. This after most of the youth were seen jumping the fence and using illegal entries. Radebe said he is having a meeting with all the relevant departments responsible and will issue a full report regarding the stampede. Vanderbijpark Police spokesperson Gertrude Makhale confirms the deaths and rape. No arrest has been made and Makhale urged people who witnessed the incident to contact Constable Ndlovu at (016) 910-9057. Meanwhile ANC Sedibeng through its spokesperson Themba Ndaba condemned the incident: “We have noted

Fire leaves pain and shame in its wake Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - As the winter ends and spring starts Sedibeng Ster recalls all the sorrow and pain caused by fire during the cold season. Families were torn apart and lives were lost. Lydia Letsipa (64) of Evaton, Sefura Kgothadi (89) of Evaton, Martha Maputsi (45) of Zone 13, Solomon Nani ( 71) of Waterdale, Tshidi Mofokeng (56) of Zone 7, and Pheelo Soke of Zone 13 were all victims of fire. Sedibeng District Municipality Executive Mayor Simon Mofokeng called for community’s help on Monday as these families are destitute. The executive mayor visited some of these families to see how the local government could help. Letsipa was first on the list visited by the district mayor: “I don’t know what happened but I was helped out of a flaming shack by neighbours. I nearly lost my life. I thank God as I lost everything, even my ID book.” She nows lives in her daughter’s house in Small Farms. Kgothadi from Evaton has had to live with relatives after her shack was destroyed by fire. Kgothadi (89) still hopes to have her own place one day: “We beg the community, business people and companies to hear our cry and let us join hands to assist these families,” said Mofokeng. It is quite saddening that year in and year out the Vaal River Carnival through its association with the ‘BEACH PARTY’ brings with it death amongst the youth. It is not the first time that this carnival event has left young people dead as was the case over the weekend. Young people who are wet behind the ears, some who cannot even properly wash themselves are allowed to indulge in alcohol and explicit sexual acts all in the name of this carnival. Instead of there being

continuous educational programmes during this month, the community annually prepares for disaster. Those liable should bite the bullet and take responsibility for the deaths of the two youths and the rape of another, all underaged. How in the world does an ELM cashier sell tickets to drunken school children as young as 14? My heart is bleeding as my own daughter will be 14 soon and I swear I would severly deal with the person who allows her into a park, where a huge unruly crowd and free flowing alcohol awaits, trust me. My heart also bleeds for the family of the ones who died and the young girl that was raped. The question that should also be asked is: who gave the go-ahead for the park to be opened to such a huge drunken young

crowd? The person must be held accountable ASAP! Instead of doing its core function of educating the young people about the rich heritage of this area the ELM through this carnival and by association the ‘BEACH PARTY’, continues to lead these youngsters astray. What is clear and should be dealt with by all means is to find the person that is responsible for all this.
