Brazier smoke kills Madjadja Mduduzi Mathebula

SHARPEVILLE. - Gijimani “Shakes” Madjadja (50) was found dead after two days inhaling smoke from a brazier. The makeshift brazier is a traditional heater known as an ‘imbawula’. This event robbed the Tshepiso South (Sharpeville) community of the elderly man’s life. Since winter, electricity now costs a fortune as load shedding is a nightmare to everyone. Most households resort to using braziers (imbawula) which endangers their lives. Madjadja increased the statistics of winter deaths due to smoke inhalation from the brazier. It’s apparent that the deceased died two days before he went missing from his house, while his common law wife Magarete Julies survived only by being hospitalised. The death of 50-year-old Madjadja was discovered by neighbour Mapoloko Mnkwanazi, who was concerned that the couple had been missing since Sunday. Mnkwanazi says she last saw the couple on Sunday night. At the time, they would not allow her to take the

brazier out of the house when she was checking on them: “I asked them to take the braizer out but they suspected I would steal it.” She said she never thought that would be the last time she saw the couple alive. Mnkwanazi says she was worried on Monday and Tuesday morning when she did not see them, though she told herself that they had simply made an early start for work. However, she also said they usually came and greeted her but those two nights there was no sign of them. On Tuesday morning Mnkwanazi and other neighbours broke through the couple’s door due to the fact that they had not seen the couple for almost two days. Luckily they found Julie trying to reach the door, though Madjadja common law husband was already deceased. Paramedics and Police were called to the scene and Madjadja was declared dead at the scene, An inquest has been opened by the Sharpeville Police.

Twelve armed men rob Evaton Mall Mduduzi Mathebu

EVATON. - The community of Evaton awoke to shocking news on Thursday morning. One of their biggest and newly renovated malls - namely Evaton Mall - had been robbed by armed robbers. It is alleged that 12 armed men entered the mall on Wednesday night at about 20:00 near closing time. They blocked all the mall entrances, forcing security guards to close the building immediately.

This action resulted in one of the guards being badly injured and one shot. These two guards are still alive and were rushed to hospital after the evacuation of the suspects. The suspects are alleged to have forced their way into three stores, including an electrical appliances store where ipads are tooled. The two others stores were broken into to gain

access. It is also indicated that entry into the other store was fruitless as nothing was taken. Happy Mnisi, the centre manager, says it’s an unfortunate incident for the Evaton community and the surrounding areas to have experienced this horrific act, which has impaired the areas image. Mnisi confirms that one guard was shot, though the guard survived and is in hospital, while the other guard was badly beaten by the suspects: “Both guards are stable in hospital.” He adds that there are no clear indications what the suspects took from the stores as the matter is still under police investigation. Mnisi could confirm that the mall would be back to normal and that the unfortunate incident would be microscopically investigated and security measures will be ensured and enforced: “We are going to impose security measures and ensure the safety of civilians.” Police are investigating a case The wall between two stores was smashed by supects of business robbery. No arrests to gain entry to Pick 'n Pay were they took nothing. were indicated by the Evaton Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula. Police.

Businesses close shop fearing dangerous open hole Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - Tenants were recently forced to close businesses in Union Street after contractors installing sewerage and water pipes left a big hole in front of stores unguarded for months. For the past seven months, the shops have been closed as the hole allegedly kept customers away. It seems that the tenants are not the only ones who have suffered as the landlord, Goolam Choonara also complained that he is becoming bankrupt. ‘I am behind by more than R40 000 on rates and taxes,’ said Choonara. Choonara added that the number of students renting has dropped dramatically. Students apparently complain of an unhygienic smell coming from the burst pipes. Choonara claimed several fruitless meetings have been held between the main contractor, Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) and the landlord. When approached for comment Karin Louw, manager for Bovu Pumps, said before they resumed

with the construction, they invited all the landlords to make them aware. She said they even signed a memorandum of understanding between

Accused appeal 16year sentences as too heavy Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - Three of four convicts were denied leave to apply for bail in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court this week. They were denied bail for the second time for fear they would abscond, according to Magistrate Nelson Nkwetla. Visibly disappointed family members and the communities of the Vaal region, churches, United Front (U.F) and other non-profit organisations, have joined hands in support of the three Boiketlong accused, who were sentenced to 16 years. The organisations and U.F showed solidarity by taking a stand to bring relief and hope to the families of the accused. This comes after three accused were sentenced for arson, malicious damage to property and assault. The accused are Sipho Sydney Mangane (45), Danny Sekudu Molefi (53) and Amatsie Dinah Mokhetha (28). They were arrested and found guilty after the community of Boiketlong went on the rampage, barricading roads and vandalising the robots on Moshoeshoe Road on March 28 of 2013. Accused No 3 - the fourth suspect - Pulane Mahlangu (22), disappeared while out on bail and the court has issued a warrant for his arrest. The sentence was passed by the presiding magistrate on

Goat rapist in hot water SPCA

Mduduzi Mathebula

TSHEPISO. - Social networks went viral after a very bizarre story occurred in Tshepiso where a man was caught literally `pants down’ raping a goat. This triggered the SPCA into responding to the matter while the man was being closely watched by Police. A case of bestiality was opened after the man was caught having sex with a goat in Tshepiso Sharpeville by Sharpeville Police, who are investigating the case. Major Mack Mngomezulu says, “The man undressed himself and then caught the goat,

strangled it and started to have sex with it. also called to the scene was the Vereeniging Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). A preliminary investigation showed that the goat was still alive. However, it died later. Police say the goat’s carcass has been sent for a post mortem. The SPCA said the findings would ensure that the `animal rapist’ was not granted bail and released, but would be held until he appeared in court. “Animals are not sexual commodities. This is a sick and barbaric crime,” the SPCA said.

PROPHET MADE MY ENEMIES CONFESS WHAT THEY DID TO ME!! I used to suffer a lot in my life and at one point I thought of ending my life. I had tried so many people in the past but no on seemed to help! Until I saw Prophet Shiru on SABC TV helping people. I took down his number and booked an appointment with him. He charged me only R100 to read my fortune and showed me my enemies in a mirror and I was shocked. He made them come and confess everything they had done to me as professed by Prophet Shiru. They caused me to break up with my husband and have lots of bad luck. They had done muthi that made my forehead swell and tokoloshe grow inside it. He then performed ritual to remove it and showed it to me and cured me after that. There’s no other way I can thank Prophet Shiru than telling the whole world about him. He helps with Love, luck, marriage, court cases, business, protection etc.

gal Aid Board to Raymond Eastes, a new attorney, to deal with the matter. Bricks Mokolo, an activist and community paralegal from the Orange Farms Human Rights Advice Centre, says they slammed the sentences as based on ‘politically motivated influence.’ The U.F suspects that an impartial judge would never have issued such heavy sentences based on allegations with no substance. The court heard that the community first attacked and burned the shack of Ward Councillor Maselloane Nthebe while together with her family, slept inside at 02:30 am. They further hauled

two vehicles belonging to the councillor out of their shack-garage and set them alight. The Councillor estimated the damages at R969 000. All this was apparently motivated by poor service delivery at Boiketlong informal settlement. During the marathon trial, a doctor’s report stated that Molefi was not physically fit to stand trial. The magistrate pointed out that the illness of an accused did not guarantee a chance to avoid being sentenced. In terms of the constitution, every person has the right to apply for a paid specialist or a state doctor.

Real Market Value vs. Replacement Value With 15 years of experience in the field of property valuation I have noticed that a lot of people do not fully understand the difference between market value and replacement value. I will illustrate this by giving examples. Replacement value refers to the estimated amount a person would pay to replace an asset at a certain time and according to its current worth, by using the same standard of finishing’s. Market Value is the estimated amount for which an asset should exchange hands on the date of valuation between a willing buyer and a willing seller, after being properly marketed. People often insure their properties at market value or even worst at municipal valuation. This could be disastrous when claiming for insurance purposes. Should you insure your house at market value of R800 000, and replacement val-

ue was actually R1 400 000, you would have been under insured at about 42.5 %. This will mean that should your claim be R100 000 on your home and you’re insurance company found that you were underinsured, they will only pay out R57 500, instead of the actual loss of R 100 000. It is therefore imperative that you insure at the correct replacement value. Another example can be of insuring your property for too much. I recently performed a valuation on a Sectional Title Scheme in Vanderbijlpark for insurance purposes. At the time the total insured value was for R38 200 000.00. Once I completed the valuation, I found that the actual replacement value was R18 200 000.00. The insurance company immediately updated their client’s value accordingly and lowered their premium. When buying or selling a property, a person should look at the

market value of a property. This would be the value of your property in the current market. If you put your property in the market at too a high value, it will be in the market for a long time. Should you sell your property at a lower value you would run the risk of a financial loss. Rather get a professional valuation, even when using an Estate Agent, as the professional report will give you bargaining power with the agent and the potential buyer. People should be careful when improving their properties in certain areas of a town. For instance if you have a property that is currently worth R 500 000 and you spend R300 000 on improvements, but the highest property in your area sold for R600 000, it would result in a potential over capitalisation of approximately

R200 000. In this fragile market of today it is well worth spending a few thousand rand in order to make sure you don’t lose thousands! We provide professional reports on various types of properties and for various reasons. Contact Jaco Terblanche on 084 589 9723 or Jacob Serero on 082 771 2247. Boipatong heroine Mitah has a story to tell Mduduzi Mathebula

BOIPATONG.- June 17 is a day of horror for Mitah Molete. She is a 26-year-old from Boipatong who was victimised and her rights brutally flouted when she was a toddler. This heroine has been a pillar of strength to her mother Marriam Molete, who lost her husband Thomas Lekabe in the Boipatong Massacre of 1992. She was one of the young toddlers victimised in the massacre, but this did not bring her down. She has continued her struggle to this day. The YB20 and Hope Fm Breakfast show broadcast live from the victim’s house last Wednesday to commemorate her ordeal. This day was a thrilling day for the young Molete. Molete, despite being wheelchair-bound, managed to complete her matric and clinch a tertiary level education in IT at VUT. There are other achievements. She never gave in to

despair, but kept her head high. She has dreams - like any child - and has already managed to realise some of them. The show was based on the historical ramifications of her personal background - a bloody history that has haunted the Vaal. Motseki Mabuya and the team gave the ever-smiling Molete a printing machine, one of the wishes she asked the team to realise for her. “We had to outsource to come up with this gift and showcasing live at her house was a very heart-warming moment for us as a team,” says Mabuya. He further made a special request to Sedibeng Ster to help find former City Press editor Lesley Mofokeng to be part of the book. Mitah Molete has a story to tell and is engaged in writing her historical book about her life in Boipatong. Photo: Mduduzi Mathebula.

SHARPEVILLE. - Sharpeville came to a standstill when the Makgotamishe Winter Tournament kicked off at James Grounds over the weekend. As expected, the grounds were packed to capacity with soccer fans from all over Sedibeng, who came to support their teams. The atmosphere was electric with local soccer fans chanting slogans to cheer up their respective teams. However, there was also a moment of madness when Fifty-Fifty FC scored an equalising goal against Mokhabele FC. Fifty-Fifty FC supporters “stor-

med” onto the field to celebrate with their players and, ironically, one supporter gave pure alcohol to the opponents’ goalkeeper. However, Mokhabela won the game 4 - 1. This is one tournament that attracts large numbers of supporters in Sedibeng, and the weekend event was no exception. Meanwhile, the junior teams kick-started their tournament programme on Monday. SEDIBENG. - Young netballer Lerato Lady Ngakane dreams of representing the Gauteng u/16 netball team.’ The team is in the balance. This Suiderlig High School learner desperately needs financial assistance to participate in the Gauteng School Netball Rhino Week scheduled to take place at Gimnasium in Vereeniging from July 12 - 16. According to a letter in possession of Sedibeng Ster Sports, the cost of the event is R3 800, which includes accommodation, transport, track-suits, bags, tournament fees and meals. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, her parents say they have already raised R1 700 and they only need R1 800 to reach their target. This promising netballer told Sedibeng Ster Sports that she is looking forward to the tournament and will be very disappointed if she doesn’t make it just because of the money. She says this is a dream come true for her to represent her region in this high-profile tournament. “ This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I’m appealing to the Sedibeng community to help raise the money. Both of my parents are not working and they have tried everything to make sure that I’m part of the team. They have tried everything in their power and I must thank those who helped me raise this R1 700.” Those who want to help can contact Ngakane’s parents at 073 4377 348
