VEREENIGING. - Credit should go to the police informant who stopped what could have evolved into a fatal situation when heavily armed robbers were foiled by a whistle-blower. The robbers’ aim to rob a big wholesaler in the Vereeniging CBD over the weekend hit a brick wall when a member of the public blew the whistle and alerted national police intelligence. The plan was to follow the shopkeepers home and rob them of their day’s takings. The incident took place on the corner of Beaconsfield Avenue and Edward Street on Saturday at about 15:30. Police spokesperson (Vereeniging Cluster) Captain Shado Mashobane said five heavily armed suspects were arrested for attempted business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and stolen

vehicles. Among the firearms confiscated by Police was an R4 rifle, a 3mm pistol and an R5 rifle with 98 rounds of ammunition. The suspects are aged between 34 and 42. They are from Sharpeville and the kingpin is alleged to be from Vanderbijlpark. Mashobane said national intelligence, the Vaal Flying Squad and the Vereeniging Police acted swiftly to nip the robbery in the bud. The informant told Police that about six suspects were ready to attack shop owners. Police followed the lead. As they were about to rob the shop, the suspects were interrupted by a Police vehicle on Union Street. Apparently the suspects were afraid to attack the business owners during busy hours, fearing that exchanging gunfire could claim lives. They allegedly waited until the shop closed, not aware they were being followed by Police. Police followed two vehicles, a

black Polo with four occupants and a kingpin driver in a silver Yaris. As they moved out of the busiest area, Police made a space between the suspects and the owners. Suddenly the suspects were cornered by Police. Both the suspects and their cars were thoroughly searched. Due to shock, one of the suspects soiled himself. The Police noted that the registration plate of the Polo did not correspond to its disc. It is alleged that - among the suspects one is an employee at the Department of Health in Metsimaholo Local Municipality. Two are self employed. One is a former security guard. No injuries were reported as Police acted quickly to make the arrests before the robbers made their move. The suspects appeared briefly in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court this week.

Criminal robbed of his gun Mduduzi Mathebula

ORANGE FARM. - Two suspects were arrested for attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and business robbery on Wednesday. Apparently these two suspects were armed when they attacked and robbed a foreigner’s tuck shop in Extension 6. An undisclosed sum of money was taken from the shop as the two suspects forced entry from the back. Police were alerted to the situation and responded quickly to the emergency. However, the two suspects split up when the community crowded into the area. One suspect was apprehended by Police and one ran toward Palm Springs Mall. Captain Johannes Motsiri confirms that, when both suspects went their separate ways, they were still armed. The first suspect was disarmed by residents, which is to say, actually ‘robbed’ of it. Police came to his rescue and arrested him. “It is alleged that a community member, who is known to the community, robbed him of his gun and ran away,” said Motsiri. The second suspect was shot by Police at the mall during a shoot-out that erupted when Police were searching for him.

A suspect was shot by Police after he and a friend robbed a tuck shop. Pho to: Mduduzi Mathebula.

A bystander said, “This mall is becoming more dangerous every day and putting innocent lives in danger.” People said they had just survived a month of taxi violence. Now it was a shoot out. One suspect has appeared before a magistrate. He was charged with business robbery, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm, while the other one is still in hospital.

VEREENIGING. - The Sedibeng regional chairperson of the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru), Nkosinathi Ndwandwe, stole the show when he told members to use what they have to eliminate criminals who attempt to kill Police. Speaking at the prayer march against the killing of law enforcement officers, Ndwandwe said, “If the criminal talks to you through the bullet, respond with a bullet.” The event was led by pastors and started with a march at the corner of Van Riebeeck Street to Beaconsfield Avenue and the Vereeniging City Hall on Thursday. He said the ‘music’ - which is to say the sound of an R5 rifle - should be heard loud and clear from the police when it comes to

self-defence: “Police should not die with machine guns in their hands.” Ndwandwe added that the police should not be scared to shoot and kill as the union would be there to protect them. Bishop Vincent Jones, initiator and also chairperson of the Greater Vaal Pastoral Forum, said, “We all have to stand against the barbaric slaughter of men and women in blue and brown. We have to make the community aware that ‘the act of killing is evil and we should not keep mum’.” He said once criminals disarm and kill Police, they will have the community hunting them down to kill them. No one should turn a blind eye to any criminal activity. The law enforcement agency and wardens are important to society,” said Jones.

Sharpeville clinic roof collapses

Moleboheng Chaha

SHARPEVILLE. - The Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Health and Social Development Sello Pitso has apologised to all residents and patients following the temporary closure of the Sharpeville Clinic. According to Pitso, the clinic was closed after the ceiling collapsed about three weeks ago as a result of an overpopulation of birds that have been making use of the attic: “There are a lot of birds here at the clinic. These birds have also been leaving droppings all over the ceiling. We believe that this might have been the cause of the collapse of the ceiling. We are in talks with the SPCA to see how they can help with the situation.” The collapse happened at night when there were no people on that side of the clinic. Pitso says the estimated period for renovation is three months, after which the clinic will again be open to residents. Pitso states that there was also an outcry from residents about privacy when they had to go to a community hall for medical assistance: “Patients complained about not having privacy at the hall. The hall does not have facilities

to take care of medicines as they should be kept at a certain temperature. “All patients making use of the clinic must please go to Retswelapele clinic in Phelandaba and Tshepiso Clinic as those are the clinics that have been chosen. Transport has been strictly arranged for patients who are very sickly and are not able to go to the other clinics. The transport will be taking those patients to the other clinics.” Pitso added that other medical facilities residents can use during this time are Kopanong Hospital in Vereeniging and the Johan Heyns Clinic in Vanderbijlpark: “The medical staff have been deployed to other clinics where they will be assisting with the extra number of people that will be coming in. We will also be taking mobile clinics to the clinics. These will be used by Sharpeville residents during this time.” ELM's MMC for Health and Social Develop ment Counsellor Sello Pitso has apologi sed to residents for the temporary closure of the Sharpeville Clinic. Tenant’s boyfriend punches landlady Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK – It is Women’s Month though not everyone is ‘hooha’ and ‘gugugaga’ about it. Shelly Mosai, a landlady in Vanderbijlpark, recently fell prey to an assault when

a tenant’s boyfriend punched her in the eye and allegedly threatened to ‘eliminate’ her. The fight between the landlady and the suspect (boyfriend) erupted when he slept over, disrespectfully flouting the landlord’s rules. Apparently other tenants obey the rules.

And there are rules, Mosai says: “These children live under my roof and they are my responsibility. “Rules are: no alcohol, no noise and no

He started calling me names and swearing at me. Ongoing reports that major local steel companies are to be closed down and/or thousands retrenched should not be ignored and careful consideration and correct measures should be taken to remedy the situation. It

5

Many are to go hungry

is worrying to note how thousands of lives will be affected by these closures. The lives of families will be plunged into a crisis following these depressing developments. Those responsible should come up with an action plan to deal with the situation comprehensively as many are sure to go hungry. It is said that 220 employers are embarking on these retrenchments countrywide. Where then is our country going if our pe-

ople are to go hungry? The biggest danger is in the mining sector. What impact will these developments have on the workers and their families, mainly children and the elderly? The powers-that-be need to prevent at all costs young people’s futures from being affected negatively because of their parents being retrenched. Assistance should also be given to elderly persons.

In these difficult times the people must stand together and make sure that families are not ruined. What is Government doing to ensure that the situation does not get out of hand? Those involved must make sure that they go back to the table and exhaust all possible avenues before taking drastic steps. Please think about it! Lerato..

SACP Vaal embarks on amnesty campaign on tariffs SEDIBENG. - The South African Communist Party (SACP) intends to embark on rigorous projects that include winning back disgruntled members from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), an amnesty campaign on rates and taxes to all working class households and indigents, making sure that the ANC alliance retains the municipalities it currently rules and that it also wins the Midvaal Local Municipality in next year’s local municipal elections. SACP’s Vaal District Excecutive Member Sello Maetso told Sedibeng Ster that his party has noted a number of developments in the district which affect the working class. The SACP Vaal District is calling for an amnesty of tariffs related to debts (payment of rates and taxes) for all indigent and working class residents of Sedibeng. He adds that the current process that the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) is using to employ the MBD

company for collection of revenues needs to be halted. The selling to MDB of the debtors book at a low cost should also be reviewed. Maetso stresses further that they (SACP) are not obsessed with who should be the executive mayors next year, but opine that their duty as the SACP is to ensure that they are part-and-parcel of the election machinery in preparation for the 2016 local government elections. “We are therefore fully aware that such a huge task won’t succeed through big mouth with no action on the ground. It is therefore on this note that the SACP is preparing to welcome back a huge number of members from EFF coming from the Vanderbijlpark sub-district,” said Maetso. The membership coming from EFF are said to be coming back to join the party because they have realised that the SACP is the only “vanguard of the working class and no mimickers can succeed in this regard.”

Happy Winner Mr Austine and His winning ticket after Playing for a long time thanks to Mama Zaina

I am Ausine from Newlands West. I at one point believed that I would never be in a stable relationship because for over 5 years, my relationships wouldn’t even last a year! Those past years were my lowest point in life. I tried out several Hindu spell casters, astrologers and so forth and never got a single damn positive result and it’s only when I contacted Dr. Mama Joyce that I got an answer immediately. She summoned the spirits and did other things and casted me the Marriage love spells because that’s what I requested and for the past year and ahalf, my relationship is still strong–engaged and ready to get married this December!

Noordhoek Primary 50th Birthday

Advertorial

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Noordhoek Primary School was the seventh primary school in Vanderbijlpark and was opened on January 11 of 1965. It was officially named Noordhoek. The name originated from the area in Vanderbijlpark where the school is situated, specifically the most Northern part.In 1994 Noordhoek became a parallel medium school with Afrikaans and English medium classes. At present they have about 1240 learners and 32 teachers. They have a wonderful line-up to celebrate this huge milestone. Celebrations start on Sunday September 6, and go on until Saturday, September 12. Activities kick off with a Thanksgiving church service and bring-and-braai followed by Charity Day, the Foundation Phase concert,

the Inter-Phase concert, the Fun Day for learners, a gala evening for old staff members and district officials, a reunion to welcome old students and parents, tour exhibitions, a time capsule (placing of names and messages to the school when it turns 75 in 2040), mass gymnastics, netball, hockey, soccer and rugby games against other schools and lots more. Saturday September 12 will see local ‘deejays’ and DJ Black Coffee entertain party-goers with his skills on the decks. Come and be part of this amazing celebration For more information please contact 016 933 3109 or Gerrit on 072 705 7968. 19 August - 25 August 2015

The rise of women in football sive, to say the least, and they need to be acknowledged for their contribution. TOUCHLINE will do exactly that – to salute those fearless women who have contributed positively to the development of football in this region. The fact of the matter is that football would not be the same if it wasn’t for the role women play in this region. When you look at the stands (during ga-

mes), especially when Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates play, you will realise that the number of women equals those of their male counterparts if it does not surpass it. These female supporters make the game look beautiful to watch and beautiful to play. How can TOUCHLINE forget those good old days when women came in numbers to the Orlando Stadium to watch Orlando Pirates against Moroka Swallows or Kaizer

Chiefs. They used to wear black and white mini-skirts, dancing on the stand. Those were the most exciting days of our football! TOUCHLINE is excited because those women are back on the stands again, making our beautiful game more beautiful. The game of football without women would be like tea with no sugar - no taste. These people bring excitement to the game, even from the stands.

Sedibeng Ster Sport celebrates women’s achievements Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Sedibeng Ster Sport continues to acknowledge those women who as sportswomen - shine in sports in celebration of Women’s Month. Banyana Banyana midfield maestro Refiloe Jane is one of those women who make their presence felt in football. This VUT Ladies FC midfield-cum-striker is a household name in South African women’s football. She has contributed a lot to the success of Banyana Banyana and she is destined to follow in the footsteps of the legendary former Banyana Banyana cap-

tain, Portia Modise. Jane and a few other women made a brave decision when they decided to play in this male dominated sport. They nevertheless made their presence felt. They have changed the face of South African football and many young girls have since become interested, which was not the case before. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Jane says playing for Banyana Banyana was a dream come true for her as she always wanted play alongside her role model- Modise. During a heart-to-heart interview, Jane said she believes there is a need to have a professional wo-

men’s league in this country. However, Jane acknowledged those women who played football before them, because they paved the way for many up-and-coming women footballers in this country: “I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge those women who laid a solid foundation for us, because if it wasn’t for them I don’t think women’s football would be where it is today. They made things easier for us and they must also be acknowledged for their contribution.” Meanwhile, Jane was outstanding in all the Rio Olympic qualifier-games recently played by Banyana Banyana.

VUT hosts Wits in Varsity Sports Cup

VUT will go all out to upset Wits when these two uni versities meet at the Isak Steyl Stadium in the Varsi ty Sports Cup on Monday. Photo: Courtesey of Varsi ty Sports.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Expect the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT)’s Isak Steyl Stadium to be full to capacity when VUT hosts Wits FC in the Varsity Sports Cup on Monday, September 24. Kick-off time is 18:00. Regardless of their mixed results, VUT is one of the universities tipped to go all the way to the semi-finals after a slow start to the Varsity Sports Cup campaign. Even though VUT head coach Geelbooi ‘Gomma’ Masango told Sedibeng Ster Sport that the Varsity Sports Cup is not their priority, their main focus being the ABC Motsepe League, their performance suggests otherwise. The ‘Clever Boys’ as Wits is affectionately known in football cir-

cles, is one of the universities that take football very seriously. Their first team Bidvest Wits FC campaigns in the Absa Premier Soccer League and the club is historically one of the oldest clubs in South African football. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Masango says they will give Wits the respect they deserve but this doesn’t mean his side will be a pushover come Monday: “We are quite aware that we are up against a very good side but we are ready for them. The boys know how important this game is to us and we must collect maximum points to be up there against the big boys.” He urges Sedibeng soccer fans and VUT students to come in big numbers to fill the stadium in support of the boys.

Mohloli youngster named McDonald Player of the Tournament Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE. - Mohloli Secondary School learner Stephen Mabe (14) was named the McDonald u/14 Provincial five-star performaner during a youth tournament held in Johannesburg recently. It is this performance that saw his school finish runner-up after losing 3 - 0 to the tournament champions School Of Excellence. It was an encouraging performance for this Sharpeville-based school beating the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns to reach the final of the tournament. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, this shy young star – Mabe - said he couldn’t believe

his ears when his name was called on stage to receive the Player of The Tournament Award: “I was overwhelmed by the occasion and I was shaking on the way to the stage. I didn’t expect to be named Player of the Tournament. I also want to thank my coaches and teammates because it is because of them I received this award. It was a team effort because the game of football is played by 11 players.” It is reported that Sundowns is interested in the service of Mabe following his outstanding performance. School sports coordinator Sello ‘Meneer’ Tshabalala says he is proud of the school’s
