Losing your job is a daunting and upsetting experience for almost everyone who comes across it. It is not always complete doom and gloom and can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. The key to making sure you survive retrenchment is being prepared, your attitude and the action you take as you are let off. Here are a few tips and pointers on how to make the best of a horrible situation.

When you are retrenched you are entitled to many different pay outs. These could come in the form of severance pay, extra days of leave, pension and UIF. Make sure you know exactly what you are owed by the company for the amount of time you worked there.

As soon as you are retrenched, make sure to register as a work seeker, in order to get the pay-out you are owed.

Evaluate your finances and draw up a priority list and work out what you can spend money on. Rent and food are obviously two items that need to be budgeted for whereas any big spending plans, like a holiday, need to be put on hold.

If you have any debt, speak to your credit providers and negotiate new terms on your payments so that you don’t fall behind.

Contact a financial advisor, they will be able to assist you in ensuring that you have enough money until you find another way to bring in an income.

Unemployment Insurance Fund - The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is there to help you in the event you have lost your job. You can only apply for UIF if you have been paying towards it, i.e. 1% of your monthly salary.

Attitude is everything!

Keep all negative feelings at bay and be positive about what the future may hold for you. Under South African law, there must be a valid economic, technical or structural reason to let people go, this may mean that retrenchment is not always a reflection on you and your work ethic.

Research how to excel in an interview. Never blame or criticise your current or old company as this will immediately put you in a negative light and you will not be considered as a viable candidate.
