Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

By William L. Pfaff, MD What is Lumbar Spinal Stenosis?

The vertebrae are the bones that make up the spine. There are intervertebral discs that sit between each bone and function as cushions or shock absorbers. The spinal canal runs through the vertebrae and this is where the nerves that supply sensation and strength to the legs are located.

With age, the discs become dehydrated and lose their height causing them to bulge. This bulging of the disc goes into the spinal canal and takes up some of the space. Next, ligaments in the spine thicken and bone spurs are formed. These changes lead to narrowing of the spinal canal called spinal stenosis.

Spinal stenosis does not necessarily mean that the patient will have symptoms. A very wise physician who trained me once told me, “Treat the patient, not the MRI.” Many people have spinal stenosis evident on their imaging studies (like an MRI) but they do not have symptoms.

What are the Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis?

Symptoms of spinal stenosis include pain, numbness, and cramping in the legs with or without low back pain.

Weakness in the legs may occur.

Rarely, the patient will develop problems with their bowel or bladder function. Eight to eleven percent of individuals in the United States will develop spinal stenosis in their lifetime.

Patients will generally complain that the symptoms worsen with prolonged walking and standing. The symptoms may come and go and vary in severity when present. Bending forward or sitting will increase the space in the spinal canal and patients will often find relief when they sit.

How is Spinal Stenosis Diagnosed?

First, your physician will take a history from you and perform a physical examination.

X-ray studies of your lumbar spine may be ordered, but an MRI of the spine is the most common test. If a patient cannot have an MRI, then a CT and/or lumbar myelogram may be ordered. This is a special type of x-ray that utilizes dye in the spine.

What Treatments are Available?

If your doctor determines that you are suffering with spinal stenosis, he or she will usually prescribe nonsurgical treatments first. These treatments may include anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the associated swelling of the nerves or analgesic drugs to control pain.

Physical therapy may be prescribed to help improve your strength, endurance, and flexibility so that you can maintain or resume a more normal lifestyle.

Your doctor may use one medication or a combination of medications as part of your treatment plan. Medications used to treat pain are called analgesics.

Some analgesics referred to as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS are also used to reduce swelling or inflammation of the nerves.

These medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and a variety of prescription drugs.

These are injections of cortisone (a high-powered anti-inflammatory) into the epidural space of the spine. This essentially bathes the inflamed spinal nerves in the medication. Depending on the patient’s individual response to the injections, several follow-up procedures may be performed at a later date. Injections are often done as part

to open up the bony canal and improve the available space for the nerves. This is called lumbar decompression or laminectomy surgery.

Surgery will relieve the leg pain and less reliably relieve low back pain.

Patients are allowed to return to most activities within a few weeks.

What if I Need Surgery?

Surgery is reserved for the small percentage of patients whose pain cannot be relieved by nonsurgical treatment methods. Surgery will also be advised for those individuals who develop progressive leg weakness, or bowel and bladder problems.

Sometimes in spinal stenosis cases, the vertebra shift or slip in relation to each other. This is called spondylolisthesis.

This abnormal motion causes instability between the vertebrae.

In such cases, spinal fusion surgery may be required in addition to the decompression in order to stabilize the involved vertebrae.

Medications such as gabapentin or Lyrica may be prescribed for leg symptoms such as burning, tingling, and pain. All medications should be taken only as prescribed by your physician, who will monitor for any side effects. Narcotics should be avoided due to their addictive potential and limited benefit for this problem.

Spinal injections or nerve blocks may be used to relieve the symptoms of pain associated with spinal stenosis.

What causes varicose veins?

There are many causes for varicose veins. Typically, they are more common in women than in men but that is not to say that men do not suffer from varicose disease. Genetics play a big role and often, patients will tell me that varicose veins run in the family. Other causes of varicose veins are pregnancy, menopause, and aging. Surgery or trauma to the legs can cause varicose veins as well. Some people who stand for long periods of time because of their job may develop varicose veins. A history of clots in the legs can also cause varicose veins. Being overweight is also a common cause of varicose veins.

Unfortunately, vein disease is one of the most undertreated and under-recognized problems encountered in medicine. More and more we see the impact this disease can have on our patients’ quality of life.

Varicose veins are veins that are dark purple or blue in color and can often feel like cords that are twisting and bulging in the legs, whereas spider veins are often purple, red, or blue and have the appearance of a spider web or tree branch. Most patients complain of significant swelling in the legs, that their legs are tired, fatigued, and even restless. Veins can also become hard, itch, throb, or even burn. Most of the time, leg pain from varicose veins is seen as an inconvenience.

But sometimes it can cause enough pain to interfere with walking or standing for periods of time.

The goal of the Nanticoke Vein Center is to increase awareness both among patients and among community healthcare providers. There are millions of people in the United States suffering from venous disease. We want people to know that there are ways we can help and ways to improve quality of life as well as reduce the visible signs of varicose veins.

Working together with primary care providers in the community, the team at the Nanticoke Vein Center is working to streamline care all the way from early recognition to finding the appropriate treatment for patients.

What are varicose veins?

As a part of normal circulation of blood, veins bring blood from the body back to the heart. Normal veins are small and have valves that act like doors preventing blood from flowing backwards and keeping it moving in the right direction. When these valves do not work properly, blood pools in the veins and the veins become enlarged. If left untreated, they can become larger. Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted veins in the legs that may get worse with standing and can be very painful.

Who is at risk for varicose veins and venous insufficiency?

Everyone is at risk for developing venous insufficiency. It’s a significant public health problem in the United States. Chronic venous insufficiency effects up to 5 percent of all Americans and depending on who you ask, up to 40 percent of Americans suffer from clinically relevant varicosities. The ulcers I talked about affect half a million people in the country.

Those in particular who are at risk are those who have a family history, are overweight, have had children, have had clots in their legs, whose jobs require them to stand for long periods of time, or have had surgery or trauma to their legs.

What are the treatment options for venous insufficiency and varicose veins?

There are many treatment options for patients with varicose veins. It’s important to keep in mind that venous symptoms are not something patients have to live with and the majority of treatments are covered by insurance.

What are signs and symptoms of varicose veins?

Patients with varicose veins can have a number of complaints that can be treated. It’s important for patients to talk to their doctors about any leg discomfort, even if they do not think their symptoms are coming from their veins. A majority of symptoms will occur at night and patients may experience heavy or aching legs, ankle or leg swelling, cramping, or restless leg syndrome. They may notice the skin color around the lower portion of their legs, particularly around the ankles, has turned brown or scaly.

What can varicose veins lead to?

For the most part, varicose veins are fairly benign but if left untreated they can lead to venous insufficiency. Varicose veins are located on the outside portion of the legs or are in the superficial system. Eventually, the pressure in these veins empty into the deep venous system. When this happens, patients develop what is known as venous insufficiency. The most common consequence of varicose veins and venous insufficiency is pain or cramping and achiness. Long term effects can include chronic skin irritation, skin ulcers and wounds that do not heal, superficial blood clots, or bleeding from minor trauma. In a small population of people, skin ulcers from venous disease can lead to skin cancer.

At the Nanticoke Vein Center, treatment options include sclerotherapy, ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, stab phlebotomy, endovenous thermal ablation, as well as more complex therapies like stenting of the deep vein system. These non-invasive techniques can improve appearance and reduce pain.

Treatment options are different for patients based on symptoms and how aggressive they want to be with therapy. It is important for patients to talk with their healthcare provider about their symptoms.

Platelet Rich Plasma Skin Rejuvenation Treatment What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet rich plasma, or PRP, also known as the “vampire facial,” is a phenomenal medical treatment that has become widely utilized in the medical field, using the patient’s own blood and its powerful healing potential to stimulate the release of stem cells and growth factors, and to stimulate new collagen repair and heal damaged tissues. PRP harvesting and administration is utilized in the dental and orthopaedic fields to heal bones, ligaments, joints, and tendons and now we use PRP to heal damaged, scarred, or aged skin.

How Is PRP Performed?

Your blood will then be processed and prepared in a laboratory centrifuge to separate the red blood cells and the white blood cells from the platelets to isolate the growth factors.

Parsons then uses a microneedling device to create multiple micro punctures into your skin, which has been previously numbed by the topically-applied numbing cream. Dr. Parsons applies the growth factors onto the micropunctures created by the microneedling treatment so that the growth factors soak into the tissue for further stimulation of tightening and skin rejuvenation. These growth factors then activate multi-potent stem cells already in the skin. The skin tightens and glows with color, and scarring softens for a beautiful younger and very natural result. Growing the Bayhealth braintrust in neurosciences It’s been eight years since Bayhealth introduced its neurosurgery program, the first of its kind in central and southern Delaware.

The Neurosciences service line is comprised of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Neurology, including Primary Stroke Centers at both Bayhealth Hospitals, Kent and Sussex Campuses. With significant growth over the past year, the service line is poised to meet the complex needs of area patients and is expanding its offerings.

“A larger team has allowed us to advance each of our Neurosciences specialties and improve access,” explained Senior Director of the Bayhealth Neurosciences Service Line Tom Cairo. Neurosurgery Medical Director Dawn Tartaglione, DO, FACOS, joined Bayhealth in November and “brings extensive knowledge and experience to strategize as we take the department to the next level,” said Cairo.

Bayhealth Neurosurgery has grown from one to three neurosurgeons supported by five advanced practice providers.

The neurosurgeons perform surgeries at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus to treat cranial and spine conditions, brain or spine trauma, and hemorrhagic stroke, among other conditions. They are increasing the use of endoscopy, a sophisticated minimally invasive technique to access parts of the brain, often through the nose or mouth, to remove tumors without an incision. For this and other procedures, the Bayhealth team uses advanced image guided navigation

which provides real-time images of what’s shown in a patient’s MRI, optimizing precision and patient safety.

Bayhealth’s Department of Neurology now has several neurologists and advanced practice providers on staff providing specialized care on an inpatient and outpatient basis, and a certified Stroke Program that has won national awards through the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. Medical Director for Stroke and Neurology Sumeet Multani, MD, says the ability of their team to diagnose and manage a myriad of neurological conditions, including but not limited to migraines, dizziness, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and several recent cases of rare cerebrovascular diseases, speaks to the strength of the program. “Our outpatient stroke clinics are keeping our community healthier by providing follow-up care and education to help patients with their conditions and prevent reoccurrence of stroke and other medical issues,” said Dr. Multani.

Continuity of care is an important aspect that has been facilitated by an expanded team. The doctor that a Bayhealth patient would see in the hospital for neurological or neurosurgical care would be the same one they’d see for appointments after discharge. This is an important benefit, particularly to those that have been through serious neurological trauma or complex operations, as it develops trust and builds a strong patient-doctor relationship. There are times when care between neurology and neurosurgery overlaps. Bayhealth’s multi-disciplinary approach, where the two specialties work collaboratively and in coordination with the emergency department and other departments, provides the best outcomes for patients, said Multani.

Increasing their outpatient presence, Bayhealth Neurosciences is able to serve more patients in our community. Appointments are available in Dover daily and at the clinic in Lewes at least twice a month. Cairo says they’ll gradually ramp up scheduling in Lewes, based on patient needs, and have recently hired another physician assistant to meet demands.

Safe Vision

As the summer months encourage us to be more active, taking in the great outdoors, risk of injury increases as well.

Even though the structure of the face is built to protect your eyes, eyes experience their fair share of injuries in the summer. The typical black eye might appear worse than the actual injury.

When the eyeball itself is involved, loss of vision may occur. There are many common causes of eye injury, including domestic and industrial accidents, such as using a hammer or an industrial chemical spill; physical assaults; sports injuries; motor vehicle accidents; falling (which we see quite a bit, especially with seniors); and extreme exposure to strong ultra violet light, bright sunlight off snow, or extreme glare.

These injuries can affect the front of the eye as well as the back of the eye, especially the retina or optic nerve. These injuries can vary from short-term recovery to long-term, or even permanent loss of vision. Quick medical care, when needed, goes a long way to lessen or control damage done to the eye and maintaining your vision.

Ophthalmology can assess the injury and evaluate vison as needed by using

How does CoolSculpting Work?

The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed by Harvard scientists who noted that fat was destroyed by cold under certain conditions. CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and refine this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell. Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat.

The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. What are the most common areas to be treated?

Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. So, what is a healthy diet?

We believe a healthy diet is an expression of a very individual regimen. There are many factors (geographic location, family history, overall health, finances) that contribute to the foods we consume.

What supplements are suggested for inflammation?

Inflammatory changes are associated with changes leading to coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, skin changes, and joint pain (among others). While we all have bouts of inflammation (when having a short-lived infection or an allergic reaction, for example) chronic inflammation can lead to damage in our bodies that can be severe.

In clinical studies, one of the most beneficial “diets” is the Mediterranean diet. It consists of whole grains, olive oil, vegetables, legumes, fish, nuts, and fruits. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to decrease inflammation, decrease heart disease, and increase lifespan.

Another example is author Michael Pollan’s recommendation to “eat real food, not too much, and eat mostly plants.” This is another example that may work for some people and not for others, as he endorses a plantbased diet.

Prevention of chronic inflammation includes healthy habits like not smoking, exercising, and eating healthy foods. Searching for the “perfect supplement” could be a daunting task. You should ask your healthcare provider for information regarding specific supplements and brand names.

So what are we saying about diet?

We believe that there are many options. A place to start will be to consider an elimination diet. This will give you a better understanding of how you feel when you eat some food groups and help you detect possible sensitivities and /or allergies.

Turmeric Supplements like Turmeric have been demonstrated to be very helpful in decreasing inflammation.

Turmeric (active ingredient is Curcumin) is a root commonly used as a spice in Indian food.

Interestingly, it is what gives the yellow color to mustard. It is better absorbed when ingested with fatty foods and with black pepper.

Adaptogens Adaptogens are a group of roots and plants that are very helpful in the management of fatigue and stress by their effect on the hypothalamic pituitary axis. While there are several adaptogens, the most commonly used in our practice are Panax Ginseng, Ashawagandha, Holly Basil, and Rhodiola. Not all adaptogens work in the same way; some work best for the management of anxiety, while others work best when you are “blue.”

Magnesium Magnesium is an important mineral that is required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation, and glucose metabolism. It is commonly used for the management of fatigue, cramps, headaches, and sleep disturbances.

Different formulations are available commercially and you have to be aware which one is best for you, since magnesium citrate can lead to diarrhea and magnesium oxide can cause constipation. The most bellyneutral formulation is magnesium glycinate.

Care for the First-Time Medical Marijuana Patient A New Four-Day Follow-Up Program Helps Answer Questions and Bring Comfort for the method of consumption such as oils, capsules, pre-rolls, chewable tablets, or other? What about flavor choices?

• Educate – Patients may be unaware that the qualifying condition they’ve come to treat might be the root cause of other symptoms. For example, if a patient suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, it is possible they also feel depressed, fatigued, or have gastrointestinal issues. Conditions Women Need to Know About Thyroid Disorders Sometimes this disorder ramps our metabolism, causing sudden weight loss, nervousness, irritability, and sweating. Yet you might experience the opposite as your metabolism slows to a crawl: unexplained weight gain, fatigue, and memory impairment are common signs, but symptoms sometimes develop so gradually that it may be years before you decide to see the doctor.

What Happens? Nestled at the base of your neck, your thyroid gland is a tightrope walker, keeping your metabolism in balance by releasing hormones that control the rate at which your body burns energy. Some thyroid disorders, like Graves’ disease, cause your thyroid to pump out too much thyroid hormone. These disorders, termed hyperthyroidism, speed up your metabolism.

Other thyroid disorders, like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, cause hypothyroidism by lowering your levels of thyroid hormone, thus slowing your metabolism.

Why Women? Like multiple sclerosis, thyroid disorders are often caused by an autoimmune reaction.

Hypothroidism arises when your immune system attacks the thyroid gland, preventing it from making the right amount of thyroid hormone.

Sussex County, fastest growing senior population in the nation You may have noticed that Sussex County’s older population is growing even faster than the rest of the U.S. and is expected to triple by 2030. Today, more than one in six drivers in the U.S. is over 65, and in our area that number is one in four.

It stands to reason that more and more of us are having to give up the car keys or having the talk with our parents about whether they should be driving anymore.

ITN fills the gap Delaware’s public transportation system is expanding and improving all the time, yet alternatives for seniors are difficult to address. This is where ITN

Join ITN or sign-up a loved one To join ITN, riders or

family members fill out an application, pay an annual membership, and open a personal transportation account. Rides are scheduled in advance and paid from this account. No money exchanges hands between rider and driver and no tipping is permitted. ITN rides are less expensive than a taxi or the new smartphone on-demand companies and there are no time-based meter rates or surge fees — just a pick-up fee and per mile rate.

Important support for ITN Funding for ITN comes from foundations, individual and business donors, and local and state grants. Longwood Foundation, DelDOT, Beebe Medical Foundation, Village Improvement Association, Parkinson’s Support Group of Sussex County, and many other local businesses and private donors were instrumental in ITN’s 2015 start-up. Organizations, agencies, and corporations like DelDOT, Sussex County Council, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, USDA, and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield continue to show support for ITN through partnerships and grants.

Volunteers Needed Volunteer drivers make ITN special. They are dedicated, caring individuals who make riders feel safe, comfortable, and cared for. Drivers are trained to offer safe care and outstanding customer service, and have clear criminal background and DMV reports. They select their hours, radius of travel, and drive their own cars. In return, they receive a free membership, accrue credits to be used for future rides for themselves, or donated

How to Travel Safely

with an Ill or Aging Loved One Summer is finally here — and so are summer vacations. For some, this means spontaneously packing the family up in the van and driving to the beach for a week of fun in the sun. For others, it means wondering if your loved one will even be able to make it out of the house. However, just because you have an aging or ill loved one, does not mean you need to postpone the family trip. With the right preparations, you can help your loved one enjoy a relaxing, worry-free vacation.

1. Get doctor’s approval. First and foremost, consult with your loved one’s primary care physician and ensure that they are cleared for travel. Talk with their doctor or Delaware Hospice about any concerns or risks in traveling. If necessary, use this opportunity to make sure that your loved one is up to date on all vaccinations and has refills for any prescriptions.

2. Arrange special services ahead of time. If you are planning on flying, contact the airline ahead of time and request wheelchair access at the airport, advanced boarding, or disabled seating, if necessary. You can do this for hotels, rental cars, and other vacation activities, as well.

3. Pack lightly, with essential items easily accessible. Make sure to have all the essentials handy — this includes medication (and copies of prescriptions), water and snacks, emergency phone numbers, sunscreen, and important documentation (passport, Medicare card, and travel insurance). If you are flying, be sure you take their medications in your carry-on.

4. Be flexible. Plan for plenty of breaks and lots of downtime to accommodate your loved one’s needs. Be realistic and patient about how much activity they can or cannot do, and adjust your plans to their capabilities.

5. Take extra precautions when traveling to the beach or somewhere hot. If traveling somewhere where you will be spending a lot of time in the sun, be sure to pack lots of sunscreen, loose fitting clothing, hats, and water. Make sure you know the signs of heatstroke.

While traveling with an elderly or ill loved one requires a degree of preparation and caution, it can be a rewarding experience for everyone involved. After all, you are going on a vacation to either visit longdistance friends or experience a new part of the world — all while spending quality time with your loved ones.

Deciding to move a loved one into a senior living community is a big decision and often a hard one to make.

Frequently, a caregiver will feel like their loved one does not require quite enough care to warrant placing them in a senior living setting. And while keeping a loved one at home can be wonderful and rewarding, it can also be physically exhausting and emotionally draining. The person receiving the care should feel at home in the new environment, so bringing a favorite blanket or photos of loved ones is always a great idea. Respite care typically ranges from five to 14 days but can really be however long a caregiver needs to take a break and feel reenergized to provide adequate care. Respite care can also be used as a trial to see how a loved one will adapt to living in a community setting.

A popular time to try respite care is during the summer vacation season. By using this service, the caregiver can focus on taking care of themselves and spending time with other members of their family or friends. Caregivers can rest assured that their loved one is receiving the best care possible and enjoy a true vacation. Residents during this time get to participate in all the events planned at the community during the sunny, summer season. These events can include day trips to local attractions, outdoor activities such as gardening or birdwatching, and even art classes and live entertainment!

Short-term stays in senior living communities are not only for caregivers to take a break, they can also be used as time for a person to recuperate after a hospital visit or medical emergency. For example, if a person has a hospital stay and does not qualify for short-term rehabilitation therapy or has completed short-term rehabilitation therapy and is not quite ready to return home, respite care may be an option. Many senior living communities offer

in-house physical, occupational, and speech therapy services to help residents return to their prior level of independence.

The decision to do a respite stay is not an easy one.

I grew up crabbing and boating on the Chesapeake Bay. I graduated as salutatorian from Kent Island High School with a varsity letter in three sports. I went to Salisbury University, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA and a degree in Exercise Science. I earned my Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) at University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 2012 and again graduated with a 4.0 GPA. I accepted a position with Tidewater Physical Therapy and have been proudly serving the Lewes area for the past six years. I treat a variety of conditions including pain, post-surgical therapy, weakness, balance, vertigo/vestibular disorders, arthritis, and a variety of other conditions.

Since graduating from PT school, I have continued my education through a variety of continuing education courses. I am a Certified Exercise Expert for the Aging Adult through the Geriatric Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. I have also completed a six-day competency course at Emory University in Vestibular Rehabilitation.

Other courses that I have taken include treatment of the lumbar complex, manual therapy for cervical and thoracic spine, comprehensive treatment of the shoulder, myofascial release,

and others. I constantly strive to learn new techniques that can better improve my patient care.

Don’t Let Muscle Pains, Strains Affect Your Summer Travel Dr. Tracy Hudson Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, Ga. for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, Fla., where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.

Traveling can be rough on the body. Whether driving a few hours to a sunny resort with your family or flying cross-country for a week-long holiday excursion, long hours in a car or an airplane can leave you feeling stressed, tired, stiff, and sore.

“Prolonged sitting can take a toll on your body,” says Scott Bautch, DC, of the American Chiropractic Association’s (ACA) Council on Occupational Health.

“Even if you travel in the most comfortable car or opt to fly first class, certain pressures and forces from awkward positions can result in restricted blood flow. One of the biggest insults to your system from prolonged sitting is the buildup of pressure in the blood vessels in your lower legs. Contracting and relaxing the muscles helps the blood flow properly.”

Dr. Bautch and the ACA recommend the following tips to fight the pains and strains of travel before they occur.

The Strain of Sitting: Treat travel as an athletic event. Warm up before settling into a car or plane and cool down once you reach your destination. Take a brisk walk to stretch your hamstring and calf muscles.

Travel by Car: Adjust the seat

so you are as close to the steering wheel as comfortably possible.

Consider a back support. Using a support behind your back may reduce the risk of low-back strain, pain or injury.

Exercise your legs while driving to reduce the risk of any swelling, fatigue, or discomfort.

To minimize arm and hand tension while driving, hold the steering wheel at approximately 3 o’clock and 7 o’clock, periodically switching to 10 o’clock and 5 o’clock.

Do not grip the steering wheel.

Instead, tighten and loosen your grip to improve hand circulation and decrease muscle fatigue in the arms, wrists, and hands.

Dr. Sheila Burek Dr. Sheila Burek is a Buffalo, N.Y. native, who received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at D’youville College. She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. can increase tension in your neck and shoulder muscles.

Health & Wellness R. Alberto Rosa, MD, FACC Dr. Ramon Alberto Rosa is a graduate of the University of Santo Domingo in his native Dominican Republic. He completed his post-graduate medical education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia with a residency in internal medicine (1991-1994), chief medical resident (19941995), and cardiology fellowship (1995-1998).

Dr. Rosa has practiced cardiology in Sussex County since July, 1998. He has served as medical director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and as chief of the Department of Cardiology at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Del. Dr. Rosa is trained in non-invasive cardiology, nuclear transesophageal echocardiograms, as well as invasive diagnostic procedures and pacemaker implantations. Women and Heart Disease: Some Numbers to Think About According to the American Heart Association, and its 2016 Statistical Fact Sheet in women and cardiovascular disease (CVD), some notable facts are worth highlighting.

Cardiovascular Disease • More than one in three women have some form of CV disease.

• In 2013, there were 398,086 female deaths due to CV disease (49.7 percent of all CV deaths).

• In 2013, CVD caused about one death every 80 seconds among females. That represents about the same number of female deaths from cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, and diabetes combined. There were 40,861 deaths attributable to breast cancer in females; lung cancer claimed 70,542 females.

One in 31.6 deaths of females was attributable to breast cancer, whereas 1 in 8.0 was attributable to coronary heart disease (CHD). For comparison, 1 in 4.7 females died of cancer, whereas 1 in 3.2 died of CVD. • In 2010, 25.1 percent of bypass and 32.9 percent of angioplasty patients were female. In 2012, 30.3 percent of heart transplant patients were female.

Stroke • An estimated 3.6 million female stroke survivors are alive today.

• Each year, about 55,000 more women than men have a stroke.

This is because the average life expectancy for women is greater than for men, and the highest rates for stroke are in the oldest age groups.

• In 2013, stroke caused the death of 75,287 females (58.4 percent

of total stroke deaths).

• In 2010, 530,000 females were discharged from short-stay hospitals after having a stroke.

High Blood Pressure (HBP) • One in three adults in the United States has HBP. • Among women aged 20 and older, the following have HBP: 30.1 percent of non-Hispanic whites, 46.1 percent of nonHispanic blacks, and 29.9 percent of Hispanics. In 2013, 38,379 females died from HBP. They represented 53.3 percent of deaths from HBP. • Among adults, 18.3 percent of white women, 13.4 percent of black women, and 7.4 percent of Hispanic women smoke cigarettes.

Diabetes Mellitus • Of the estimated 21.1 million American adults with physician-diagnosed diabetes, about 10.6 million are women; 6.1 percent of non-Hispanic whites, 14.6 percent of nonHispanic blacks, and 11.8 percent of Hispanics.

• Of the estimated 8.1 million Americans with undiagnosed diabetes, about 3.0 million are women; 1.7 percent of nonHispanic whites, 2.3 percent of non-Hispanic blacks, and 5.0 percent of Hispanics.

• Of the estimated 80.8 million Americans with pre-diabetes, about 34.3 million are women; 28.9 percent of non-Hispanic whites, 27.8 percent of nonHispanic blacks, and 26.0 percent of Hispanics.

• In 2013, diabetes killed 35,737 females.

• In 2010, 319,000 females

Coronary Heart Disease (ICD/10 codes I20-I25) (ICD/9 codes 410-414, 429.2) • About 6.6 million females alive today have CHD. Of these, 2.7 million have a history of myocardial infarction (MI, or heart attack).

• Among women aged 20 and older, 1.8 percent of nonHispanic whites, 2.2 percent of non-Hispanic blacks, and 1.7 percent of Hispanics have had an MI. • Each year new and recurrent MI and fatal CHD will impact an estimated 405,000 women.

• The incidence of CHD in women lags behind men by 10

years for total CHD and by 20 years for more serious clinical events such as MI and sudden death.

• In 2013, 161,698 females died from CHD; 50,742 from MI. Overweight and Obesity • An estimated 31.6 percent of girls aged two to 19 are overweight or obese; 29.2 percent non-Hispanic whites, 36.1 percent non-Hispanic blacks, and 37.0 percent Hispanics. Of these girls, 17.2 percent are obese; 15.6 percent non-Hispanic whites, 20.5 percent non-Hispanic blacks, and 20.6 percent Hispanics.

• An estimated 64.7 percent of women aged 20 and older are overweight or obese; 61.2 percent non-Hispanic whites,

81.9 percent non-Hispanic blacks, and 76.3 percent Hispanics. Of these women, 36.0 percent are obese; 32.5 percent non-Hispanic whites, 57.5 percent non-Hispanic blacks, and 42.9 percent Hispanics.

These sobering statistics confirm, once again, that heart disease remains the number one cause of mortality and a major cause of morbidity (illness) in American females. Much remains to be done and the role of early childhood. The role of parents is crucial in the effective prevention of many of the above health issues. Starting early helps provide children with the best chances for healthy lives.

Veterinary Services Peninsula Veterinary Services is a full-service, AAHA-accredited hospital located in Long Neck, Delaware. It is owned by Dr. April Reid, who moved from Brooklyn, New York to Delaware in 2015 to pursue her dream of owning her own practice. Dr. Reid is a graduate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. She owned a thoroughbred racetrack practice for 14 years before making the move to small animal practice. Dr. Reid works closely with several local rescue organizations. She is currently pursuing board certification in veterinary practice as well as finishing an MBA degree. The Five Most Common Questions A Veterinarian Gets Asked There are many questions veterinarians are asked during visits; the most common are: What is the best age to spay/ neuter my pet?

Traditionally, the recommended age was 6 months for a variety of reasons including anesthetic safety and minimizing hormonal behavioral issues. Current research and advances in anesthetic safety has allowed veterinarians to be able to perform spay and neuters earlier in the majority of animals. However, the recommended age for some breeds, especially the giant breeds, is much later than this so please consult with your veterinarian specifically for your pet.

Spaying and neutering early is beneficial both for inadvertent overpopulation issues as well as your pet’s health. Unspayed females are at risk for mammary tumors and pyometra, a life-threatening infection of the uterus. Unneutered males can develop prostatic hyperplasia and infection as well as unwanted behaviors.

Do my dogs need flea/tick/ heartworm prevention yearround?

Absolutely! Because of urban sprawl and warmer temperatures, external parasites and mosquitoes are able to survive easily year-round and thus we need to protect our pets (and ourselves) all year. Fleas can survive the colder temperatures indoors in your carpet or on your pet. Ticks become less active in the winter, but can also live year-round

in your home or kennel. Mosquitoes can also live indoors and if the temperature is above 57 degrees for a few days, the heartworm larvae in mosquitoes can develop to the infective stage and be transmitted to your pet through a mosquito bite.

What is best food for my pet/How much should I feed my pet?

The best food for your pet is a high quality food that he/she enjoys. Always look for a food that has animal proteins as the first ingredient. While cats are strict carnivores, dogs are not and dogs need and can obtain necessary nutrients from fruits, vegetables and grains. The most important thing to look for on the packaging is the statement “complete and balanced” as the Association of American Feed Control (AAFCO) has strict requirements to make sure food labeled as such contain the minimum amount of necessary nutrients ie the “guaranteed analysis.” As to the amount to feed your pet, always go by the amount on the bag as each food has different serving sizes due to differing ingredients. In addition, how much to feed your pet is also determined by how active your pet is, your pet’s individual metabolism, and your pet’s age.

Should I brush my pet’s teeth?

Yes! The more often the better but generally aim for 3-4 times per week. Never use human toothpaste, baking soda or salt as these can be harmful to your pet if swallowed. If your pet will absolutely not allow you to brush his/her teeth try dental bones and dental water additives. A

yearly professional dental cleaning that includes full mouth radiographs is recommended for all pets although some breeds of dogs and small dogs may need more frequent attention. Regular cleanings help prevent gum disease that can lead to heart and organ failure due to circulating bacteria.

How often should I bathe my pet?

Unless your pet has a medical

condition that necessitates more frequent bathing, once monthly is usually adequate. Bathing more frequently can dry out your pet’s skin and increase the risk of bacterial or fungal skin infections so it is preferable to spot clean in between bathing with pet wipes.

Always use a gentle shampoo formulated for pets when bathing as human shampoo is normally too harsh for pets’ skin.

The class begins and ends in a resting pose that promotes relaxation and awareness — Shavasana. by Albert and Elmina Miller. They reside in Dover, Del. with their two wonderful daughters, Kayla and Ashlie. Over the years they have built their family on a strong foundation of faith, generosity, and integrity and they strive to incorporate the same principles into all that they do. Albert and Elmina Miller started this company back in 2007, but it wasn’t until January of 2017 that Albert decided to take the leap of faith and go all-in with the real estate business. He was raised in the Amish community in Dover, Delaware and at age twelve began working in the construction field with his family. By the time he turned sixteen, he was a full-time bricklayer and from there continued in the masonry field for the next three years. After turning twenty, he started his own business framing houses for big developers throughout Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. That same year, Albert and Elmina made the hard decision to leave the Amish community. This decision was tough, but they remain forever grateful for the hardworking and committed foundation that they were raised in.

Nancy Richard is the business owner of N’Rich Images Permanent Cosmetics and the N’Rich Images School for Permanent Cosmetics. Her personal motto, “Good is not good enough,” a passion to satisfy the needs of others, a strong clinical background, an artistic ability, and a keenness to detail has led to her success. Nancy began her aesthetic career in 1999 working with a plastic surgeon in Wilmington, Del. She easily transitioned into her career as a micropigmentation specialist in 2001 and, subsequently, received her teaching certification in 2003. This allowed her to play a vital role in recreating the feature(s) lost due to age, trauma, illness, or just simply having a desire to enhance existing features such as that of the working woman.

Chris is the president and financial advisor of Guardian Investments. He is an experienced professional who has been serving clients since 2008. Chris has been named a Five Star Wealth Manager in Delaware every year since 2013.* A graduate of Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, Chris got his start in the financial services business in 1992 as a regional manager with Primerica Financial Services. Patrice Tosi As vice president of Advancement, Patrice Tosi is responsible for raising the funds necessary to fulfill the mission of Children’s Beach House: To help our children with communicative disabilities and other special needs to be successful in life.

To help them reach their highest potential while becoming contributing members of their families and communities.

Pat joined Children’s Beach House in 2016 after serving as CEO of Hope’s Door, an emergency shelter and counseling agency serving victims of domestic violence in Dallas, Texas. Before her work at Hope’s Door, Pat served as COO and CEO of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation where she led the $300 million dollar organization to becoming the world’s largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research, public education, and community advocacy.

An energetic self-starter with entrepreneurial spirit, Pat owned a lucrative manufacturing company and held executive positions in finance and marketing at several Fortune 500 companies prior to her work in the nonprofit sector.

Currently, Pat is most passionate about the work she is doing to help at-risk children throughout Delaware and is humbled to be working with a talented team of dedicated individuals, all focused on expanding opportunities for children with special needs throughout the state.

Mike Baker Mike Baker is the founder of C.M.Baker Photography with over 25 years experience. His photography ventures have been quite diverse.

Throughout the year you may find him shooting a wedding, a Quinceañera, in the pits of a NASCAR race at Dover Downs and now at front stage at the Firefly Festival or flying over doing aerials. Giving back to the community has always been an important part of it all. Mike was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” from CDCC (Central De Chamber of Comm.) in 2005, ”Volunteer of the Year” from Kent County Tourism 2010,”Chairman’s Outstanding Partnership Award from CDCC in 2010 along with “Business Person of the Year” from CDCC in 2008. Since 1997, Mike has been the “official” photographer for the KC Heart Ball and for the “Go Red” in Kent County since it’s onset. Susie’s Art Creates Customized Oil Paintings to Enhance Your Home

By Nancy Stenger Joseph Susan Timmons Macintire’s paintings involve far more than canvas, oil paint, and pastels. Like the great masters, she bases proportions on the Golden Ratio of 1.618, the same divine formula Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and other great masters used.

What makes Susie’s style of realism unique is an unexplainable element of fun and bold colors. “I love painting big flowers, especially hibiscus and bird of paradise.” Flowers are her specialty now, but the former nurse started out fifteen years ago painting turtles. “Turtles. I knew turtles. As a little girl, I had one and got one for my granddaughter, named Squashy.” It was a portrait of Squashy titled Painted Turtle that launched Susie’s Art. To Susie, every living thing has its own personality: flowers; animals; sea life, especially crustacean; even waves and water itself. Her goal as an artist is to invite each subject to live on her canvas, within her special world of colorful whimsy. “I try to bring movement into each painting. When I see it move, come to life, I know I’m on the right track.” She’ll paint anything now, except people. “Maybe someday, but I don’t feel ready yet. I don’t want to disappoint anyone.”

She paints from still life, plein air, memory, and photos. Ideas come from friends, customers, photographers, and other artists. “I enjoy the audience of customers, friends, grandchildren, and other family while I paint. They’re great inspiration. As we all know, art warms your heart. So I enjoy including them.”

Introspective and humble when asked about her work, she credits her creator as the source of her talent. “My talent came from my higher power. But art technique is an ongoing learning process,” she said.

Other artists have been especially generous, willing to teach and inspire her. “My style is New Renaissance Art, which is realism. In 2015, I had a wonderful art experience studying with Libby Berry in a course called School of Living Colors, on beautiful Whidbey Island in Washington State. I’m one of over 400 students who gather at various locations to paint together. It’s like a fun reunion with laughs, dining out, sharing food, knowledge, and experiences. Painting is hard work. Learning how to see takes time.”

Sometimes it’s her mind’s eye. Other times she sees something in photographs.

Fond memories of crabbing in Rehoboth Bay inspired a crab painting titled Deep Blue. A photo of a cow on a rainy day in Ireland inspired Charlotte of Valencia.

A grade school friend’s Facebook post, a double bird of paradise, inspired her award-winning flower painting, Beautiful Nature. And her recent 1908 Heritage Lighthouse sprung from the work of a photographer friend.

But painting is not always fun. Her process is tedious, exacting, and timeconsuming, especially oil painting. “I use mainly realism, occasionally venturing into modern art, impressionism, and abstract. I dabble in pastels, but use mainly oils, and mainly Old Holland oil paints, the best quality oil paints.” Each style, each medium, requires different techniques. In realism, paintings are mathematically accurate. Each “golden section” requires precise measurements.

She determines in advance exactly which paints to use by building a unique color-tone scale for each painting. “There’s a lot more to it than people realize. Some paintings take years to complete and even after completion, oils must cure for months before prints can be made.” Being an artist has taught her patience.

She currently works out of two home studios and a retail studio at Lavender Fields Farm, located just west of Lewes, Del. “I’m so grateful to the people at Lavender Fields for providing me so many things to paint. I believe it is by fate and karma that I’m exhibiting my art there. To make Susie’s Art affordable for everyone, she paints all sizes — small four inch by six inch size to large four foot size. Prices for commissioned paintings are based upon the amount of detail, pigments used, and the amount of time required to complete the work. Commissions begin with a 50 percent down payment.

Susie’s Art has been exhibited in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, and West Virginia. From May 31 to July 21, 2019, seven flower paintings will be exhibited at the Ice House Gallery in Berkley Springs, W. Va., in a show called “Pocketful of Posies.”

New Look, New Owner, Same Great Service and Selection There is no other way to describe the last two years other than a dream come true. It was July of 2015 and I was sitting at my corporate job in Baltimore thinking this cannot be life. It was 80 degrees outside and I was holed up in my cubby with no window in sight. I spent my weeks counting down to Friday when I could head to the beach. I stepped outside for lunch to call Nancy, the founder of Body Double Swimwear, to ask her if any summer positions were open.

I told her I think the time is now to act on my purchasing Body Double Swimwear. She said get to the beach!

A little back story is that my family and I grew up spending our summers in Fenwick Island. I worked for Nancy through high school and college. After graduating from Syracuse University, I had to test the corporate world and several east coast cities before committing to the quaint town of Fenwick Island. After job and city hopping for three years from New York City to Washington, D.C. to Baltimore, I took the dive. I moved to the beach to start learning anything and everything I could from Nancy about the business with the goal of eventually making the shop my own.

Nancy founded Body Double Swimwear in 1986 and stocked the store with her creations. You could literally come into the store, create your dream suit, then Nancy and the seamstresses would make it come to life. Custom swimwear slowly faded out as the swimwear brands started making extended sizing. We no longer offer any custom suits but we will help fit you into a swimsuit. We carry up to size 26W and size H cup bra so I am confident we can find a suit for you.

We all understand that most women walking through the door are not excited to be stripping down to nothing and well, a shop full of swimsuits can be overwhelming. With over 75 brands in the shop and hundreds of styles, it would be difficult for you not to find something with our help.

In addition to a vast selection of swimwear, we have expanded our inventory to include more cover-ups, clothing, and golf and tennis apparel. We have everything from lightweight lacey cover ups to UPF 50+ cover-ups from Cababa Life and Coolibar (a dermatologist favorite). This leads me to my next point – customer service. This is where I feel we excel. From the moment you walk in the door, we strive to make you feel welcome and comfortable.

I will be the first to admit – trying on swimwear can sometimes be quite miserable – but I promise it will not be at Body Double. Ask any one of our customers. We will guide you to the best suits for your body and once you start trying on, we like to be a part of the process. We always say to show us a suit on, tell us what you like and don’t like, and then let us do the rest. We will help fit you in the correct size and show you suggestions based on your preferences and body type. We have thousands of swimsuits to choose from and all of the women that work at Body Double are trained and educated about the brands and suits we carry.

When I took over the shop in December of 2017, I was adamant about continuing this reputation of impeccable customer service. I personally hate when I walk into a shop and no one even says hello, let alone is in sight to answer a question, and my girls know this is my biggest pet peeve.

The Women of Freedom Boat Club Boating is all about making memories, and there are countless ways to do so: cruising the local waters in search of birds and dolphins, easy access from our inlets to great fishing in the bays and ocean, inshore fishing, boating to a sandbar to enjoy a picnic and a swim, dining at waterside restaurants, or enjoying a sunset cruise.

More women than ever before have discovered the boating lifestyle. Whether at the helm or as a valued second mate, they are enjoying the benefits of boating. Here are a few stories from some of the women of Freedom Boat Club Delaware.

I’ve never really been a boater. I went boating with friends on occasion throughout the years, but it’s not something that I was really exposed to all that much. About eight years ago a recently retired friend found himself in a second career as a Freedom Boat Club owner. We ended up buying one of the boats from his fleet, then proceeded to climb aboard on the North Shore of Long Island and pilot the boat through Long Island Sound and Hell’s Gate, down the East River, under the bridges, along the New Jersey coastline, across the Delaware Bay and into the Roosevelt Inlet to her new home in Lewes. Hence, my boating life began!

We decided to take the plunge and open our very own Freedom Boat Club here in Lewes. A second club location in Long Neck soon followed.

What I love most about being an owner of Freedom Boat Club is that it gives me the opportunity to become a more active, contributing member of my community here in Lewes, and we get to meet and cater to happy people all day long and help to enable their fun and adventures on the water! This school gives me the ability to teach, especially the youth and physically challenged, about our eco system and how to catch and clean fish, and prepare a meal that they have caught that day. These are lessons that one can take with them and grow throughout their lifetime, hopefully bringing many days of happiness and peace in to their souls.

Emergency Funds: Preparing for the Unexpected Presented by Chris Theis Many people don’t understand the importance of establishing and maintaining an emergency fund until it’s too late. Are you financially prepared for a leaky roof? How about a broken-down car? If you lost your job, how long would you be able to support yourself and your family until you got a new one?

An emergency fund is money that you’ve set aside to be used in these critical situations, be it to handle a minor home repair or to pay for something more serious, like medical bills. Despite the importance of having an emergency fund, however, only 39 percent of Americans have enough savings to cover a $1,000 emergency, according to a recent Bankrate report. Below are several steps to take to help you establish your own emergency fund.

Set a Goal How much you need to save depends on a variety of factors. Generally speaking, your emergency fund should cover three to six months of living expenses. Start with three months and aim to work your way up to six months. There are plenty of free online tools that can help you figure out how much you should have on hand. For example, NerdWallet’s emergency savings calculator, available at www.nerdwallet.com/ blog/banking/emergency-fundcalculator/, offers instant insight into this planning consideration.

Keep Your Funds Accessible It’s important to pick a bank and a savings vehicle that will give you easy access to your emergency fund.

Consider keeping a portion of your money in a regular savings account, as it will provide some return, and you can withdraw it at any time without penalty. For longer-term funding, you might want to use a savings vehicle with higher interest, such as a certificate of deposit (CD)*.

Avoid Savings Pitfalls There may be obstacles in building your emergency fund. Take a look at some of the most common pitfalls and ways to avoid them: • Using your credit card as an emergency fund. Although credit cards are convenient, there are drawbacks. Using your credit card will likely resolve the immediate need, but when you think about interest on the debt and possible penalties, it may not be worth it in the long run.

• Cheating other accounts to fund your emergency stash.

Withdrawing money allocated to other resources–particularly your retirement savings account–can do long-term damage to your financial picture. If you borrow from your retirement account and default on the loan, you could face serious tax implications and penalties.

An Attorney’s View of the Best and the Worst Reneta L. Green-Streett is an attorney in the Morris James Personal Injury Practice Group. Reneta’s litigation experience includes trials in all of Delaware’s courts of law with a focus on Superior Court practice. By Reneta L. Green-Streett I have noticed there seems to be more automobile accidents in the summer months. Perhaps that is because people are driving around enjoying the nice weather and people tend to stay inside during inclement weather. Why are there so many careless drivers on the roads? Why do people who are injured in automobile accidents wait so long to retain an attorney? According to the last issued Delaware State Police Traffic Statistical Report in 2016, 21,256 traffic collisions were investigated by Delaware State Police alone, resulting in 120 fatalities.

An attorney always prefers to be involved earlier in a case rather than later. That gives the attorney the ability to control the direction a case takes and to ensure all aspects of a case are under control. I have found injured victims don’t understand insurance coverages, the litigation process, and may be afraid to ask important questions.

Nobody wants to be in an accident.

The most important thing a person can do before an accident occurs is to check their insurance coverage. Too often, clients say to me, “Oh I have full coverage.” What does that mean?

You can have “full coverage” under the law, which is a minimum of $15,000 per person for medical bills and lost wages, known as Personal Injury Protection Coverage (PIP). If a person is seriously injured or dies as a result of an accident, $15,000 is not sufficient coverage.

I ask prospective clients to bring their automobile insurance policy to our first meeting, so I can review it carefully and give them suggestions.

The initial interview meeting is usually an educational meeting. Injured victims come to the attorney with concerns about their car damage, their medical bills, and how will they get paid for their wages. I explain what negligence is under the law: failure to use reasonable care which results in injury to another person. Regardless of the extent of your injuries, you do not have a case unless you can prove, by a preponderance of the evidence, that the other driver was negligent.

It is very difficult when an attorney has to explain to a client that they don’t have sufficient insurance coverage given the extent of their injuries and losses. Or, they don’t have a case because it cannot be proven that the other driver was negligent under the law.

PIP coverage is required to be carried on every Delaware registered motor vehicle. Delaware law requires that, at a minimum, each car carry $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident coverage. Higher limits are available.

I recommend you purchase the highest amount of PIP coverage you can afford.

When I am able to accept a new client and their case, I like to get to know the client as well. A serious accident impacts each client differently. The only way to effectively prove to an insurance company or a jury the impact an accident and resulting injuries had on a client’s life is to really know the client. For example, I represented a client who traveled around the country competing in marathons. After being struck by a vehicle, he was robbed of that hobby for the rest of his life. I represented another gentleman who had a part-time job as a model. His accident left him with a large facial scar. He had a significant loss of income, as he could no longer perform his part-time job.

The injuries to one young mother from an accident left her unable to carry and care for her infant. Accidents and injuries affect everyone differently. I think it is critical to get to know each client well, and understand all aspects of their lives, so no claim is left out of a case presented, and to see that a client is fairly compensated for all of their losses.

part of the job I do is seeing a child who is hurt in an automobile accident.

Often times, a child will have difficulty expressing everything they feel and are going through following an accident.

I have seen children suffer bullying in school because of injuries or scars they may be left with following an accident. It can take a child much longer to recover from accident-related injuries because they do not have the coping skills that adults have. I pride myself on being a good listener, but representing an injured child can really tug at your heart.

Conversely, the best part of the job is knowing I have helped my client, adult or child, through one of the most traumatic challenges of their life. Being the presence in their lives to guide them through the insurance maze, being available to answer their questions, and educating them on the best avenues legally available in their case is rewarding. It’s that hug at the end of the case that lets you know you were able to make a positive change in someone’s life and that you chose the right occupation.

What Makes Up my Credit Score?

You see it when you apply for a loan, in financial apps on your phone and all over. Everyone wants it – but what does it actually mean to have “good credit?” And how can you get and keep your score where you want it?

More times than not, the score that you see when you look at your credit is your FICO score. This number is meant to represent your financial health and to let lenders know how reliable you are as a borrower. This score also determines the rate that accompanies the loan or line of credit that you are applying for. When you are looking to make a large purchase your FICO score has the ability to save you thousands and thousands of dollars in interest.

Before we get into possible ways that you can raise your score and potentially save money, let’s take a look at the five areas that make up your credit score: Payment History (35 percent) - This one speaks for itself! The repayment of your past debt is a major factor in the calculation of credit scores.

It typically helps determine future long-term payment behavior. Both revolving credit (e.g., credit cards) and installment loans (e.g., mortgage) are included in payment history calculations, although installment loans take a bit more precedence over revolving credit. This is why one of the best ways to improve or maintain a good score is to make consistent, ontime payments.

Amounts Owed (30 percent) - This category is basically credit utilization, or in other words, the percentage of available credit being used/borrowed.

Credit score formulas consider borrowers who constantly reach or exceed their credit limit as a potential risk. This is why it’s a good idea to keep low credit card balances and not overextend your credit limits. This is one reason that you DO NOT want to close an account! Sometimes it is better to just cut up the card.

Length of Credit History (15 percent) - This factor is based on the length of time all credit accounts have been open. It also includes the timeframe since an account’s most recent transaction. Newer credit users

could have a more difficult time achieving a high score than those who have a credit history since those with a longer credit history have more data on which to base their payment history.

This is another reason that you DO NOT want to close an account if you have had it for a long time and are unsure how it will affect your score!

New Credit (10 percent) - Today’s higher use of credit factors into FICO® Score calculations. Still, opening several new credit accounts in a short period of time can signify greater risk – especially for borrowers with a short credit history. How you shop for credit and within what timeframe can affect your FICO Score in a number of ways.

Credit Mix (10 percent) - FICO scores consider the combination of credit cards, retail accounts, installment loans, finance company accounts, and mortgage loans. Credit mix is not a crucial factor in determining your FICO score unless there’s very little other information from which to base a score.

Second, check your credit score with each of the three major credit bureaus using annualcreditreport.com. This is a great first step and is the perfect time to ensure that everything on your credit report belongs there. If you see anything unusual, contact the credit bureau or your financial institution as soon as possible to start working toward resolving the issue.

Third, if you don’t already have a plan of how you are going to pay off your debt, a budget that you can stick to has the power to be your best friend.

Your budget should include your debt repayment schedule, fixed and variable expenses, and all income that you have. When you start living your life by a budget you begin to cultivate responsible habits which ultimately lead to you improving your score.

Home & Garden A&E Properties is owned and operated by Albert and Elmina Miller. They reside in Dover, Del. with their two wonderful daughters, Kayla and Ashlie. WILKINS WILDLIFE & BEDBUG 911 Jay Wilkins, the owner of Wilkins Wildlife & BedBug 911, started his business just a few short years ago in 2017. With the last $344 to his name, Jay decided to start this business with the purchase of four humane wildlife traps. He then started advertising and posting videos of his clients’ needs on Facebook. Not knowing how a brand new business would succeed, he had enough faith within himself and his future clients that he would continue to push forward and soon was able to see his business start to grow.

Jay was not new to this line of work, as he worked for a pest control company years prior to taking the leap on his own. One job a day led to two jobs a day and now has become a full day and, at times, full weeks. His passion for solving human/wildlife conflict is unmatched and the education he openly shares with clients speaks volume about his integrity.

Wilkins Wildlife & BedBug 911 is a 100 percent humane wildlife removal business. Jay and his staff will do what they have to do to remove animals that may have made your home, their home. Once Jay removes the animal from your structure or property it may be taken to a rehabilitator for observation or released within state guidelines and laws. Menopause and Sleep Menopause. Just the mere mention of the word makes women, well, take pause! It’s a time of major hormonal and physical changes; a phase of transition where symptoms vary from woman to woman.

The most pronounced symptoms include hot flashes, but sleep loss and quality of sleep suffer just the same. Insomnia is reported by 75 to 85 percent of women, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Some report lack of sleep while others are interrupted with frequent awakenings due to hot flashes, which cause nextday fatigue.

Did you know that women in their late 30s and 40s with symptoms of insomnia are actually experiencing the beginning of menopause?

This can wreak havoc on our daily lives. The National Sleep Foundation recommends women be consistent with wakeup times and allow themselves plenty of time to fall asleep. Sticking to a ritual and building a very tight sleep environment are ways of preventing sleep deprivation. The most common recommendations are making your bedroom dark and cool, skipping alcohol and tobacco, and sleeping on a comfortable mattress.

Flowers grown in a garden or in containers are nature’s hummingbird feeder. The right combination of wildflowers and exotic fl owers appropriate for your growing zone will attract hummingbirds, increase the number of small insects that hummingbirds require for their survival, and will bring beauty and interest to your garden.

The ideal hummingbird flower contains nectar at the base of a single tubular flower; this shape and lack of fragrance discourages insect use.

Hummingbirds need to feed every 15 minutes and may visit as many as 1,000 fl owers each day, so flowers need to be numerous and constantly regenerating. Red flowers are popular, but flowers of other colors also contain nectar and attract hummingbirds. Seek flowers with a long bloom period and make sure that a great hummingbird flower is in bloom at every point during your hummingbird season, especially during the spring and fall migration periods. Additionally, it is important to provide “cover” in the form of mature trees and thick shrubbery.

Blinds, Shades, and Child Safety

Do you remember all the news stories a couple years ago concerning child safety and window coverings?

The subject sticks out in my mind because it is related to my work and because I have small children. The concern was mostly over mail order and or stock items that were bought off a shelf and installed, usually, by the homeowner. There were tragedies, huge recalls, and lawsuits, but fortunately, the custom window covering trade was not really involved. I would say that the overall higher quality of product and the experienced sales and installation that comes with a custom retailer helped to keep the trade uninvolved; however, the custom window covering community definitely took notice and many positive changes have taken place. There is much more awareness about the subject compared to a couple of years ago and that in itself is very helpful. The industry has been very proactive in making their products more child-safe as well.

On the awareness side of things, it is good to note that there are many products out there that have been around for a long time, like shutters and draperies that already are or can be made without child safety’s number one enemy, which is strings. Draperies, when set up to traverse by hand, present no problems for toddlers or even pets who like them because they can easily move the fabric aside to leave wet nose marks on the glass.

Shutters are another great choice. They are naturally string-free, simple to use even for children, and are one of the best insulators against both heat and cold. With their timeless look and classic feel, they are a great, child-safe choice in window coverings.

One way that the industry is changing to become more child safe is the introduction of cordless control into a wider variety of products. Cordless roller shades and cordless honeycomb shades have been around for a while but lately we are seeing the industry really improving and trying to mainstream the option. The string free lift systems are getting better and more reliable, and now we are seeing the option more and more on roman shades, and wood and faux wood blinds, which were mostly an unavailable option in years past on these popular window coverings.

Window covering manufacturers are also making improvements on shades and blinds that do have strings with breakaway mechanisms that will separate when too much stress is applied. They have made it so that small children can’t get their heads between the back of the shade and the strings found there on roman style shades. These are two very important changes.

In a growing industry, any business wanting to stay on top must develop a skilled and cohesive team. This entails hiring the best talent available and cultivating that talent to provide the best service possible. In certain industries, a pre-defined notion of what this type of talent looks like is endemic.

In traditionally male-dominated fields such as pest control, only 8.4 percent of the workforce is made up of females, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But this number is on the rise, up from only 3.7 percent in 2014. With the number of women entering the pest control field more than doubling in just under five years, it is important to understand the vital role this type of diversity plays in this historically male-dominated field.

At Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions, 29 percent of the staff is female, more than triple the industry average. Four women total are on staff serving in roles including bookkeeping, customer service, and field technician.

Belinda Bennett, owner, along with her husband Dean, said, “I strive to recognize greatness when I see it, and my goal was to put these ladies in the spotlight. They give our customers their undivided attention and go above and beyond to exemplify our mission at Bennett Termite.”

there are today. At that point, her quest to be the best at getting rid of pests was a balancing act to ensure she had plenty of time for her kids. After thirteen years in the industry in Florida and taking some time off to be with her kids, Lisa is now going on three years with Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions as a highly trained professional with state certifications for termite and general pests and a leading asset among their roster of experts.

“There have been plenty of times when I’ve gone to the home of a woman or a senior citizen who’s been glad to see a woman at her door,” she said on an early spring morning outside the home of a Bennett customer in Milton. “Sometimes people feel more comfortable bringing a woman into their house.”

“I’m also one of those people who likes to move,” she added. “And that’s good because in a typical day I could be working a hammer drill in a crawl space, digging a trench for termite work, or dealing with 350 feet of pressurized hose.”

But even then you have to look out for other things. Some houses have the most beautiful decorations, like those glass bulbs that light up at night time.

Today, gender norms are being busted in the field and beyond. According to a survey done by Insight Pest Control, 83 percent of the women surveyed “feel that the industry at large has become more welcoming toward women since they began their career.” From out in the field to back at the office, woman are having a greater impact in the world of pest control. The effect of women in pest control is not lost on those at Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions.

None of this praise surprises Dean Bennett, who, after 15 years of managing pest control companies, founded Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions with his wife Belinda in 2011. In fact, it’s the kind of quality service Belinda and Dean have always expected from the highly-trained and certified technicians who provide pest services to residential, commercial, and hospitality properties. While customers see that same level of professionalism from all 12 men who work alongside Lisa on the technician and sales teams, Belinda is especially proud to support the women who are building and continuing successful careers in the pest control industry.

I was born and raised in Port Chester, NY; a small town just outside of NYC. I graduated from Port Chester Senior high School in 1988. Directly after graduation I enlisted in the Armed Forces as a Seabee builder in the United States Navy. In the nine years I served as a Navy Seabee I learned most of the skills I have used for the past 25 plus years in the painting industry. Including drywall repair, finish trim, and light carpentry. 2. Cover to protect all floors, surfaces, and furniture.

3. Pole Sand all walls, and ceilings where needed to remove any debris.

4. Repair drywall blemishes such as nail pops, stress cracks, and holes. Then sand smooth and spot prime before painting.

5. Caulk and putty all trim where needed.

Our neighbors invited us to dinner here yesterday and it was our first experience dining here for all 4 of us. Wow, why did we wait so long to try this hidden gem right in our backyard in Ocean View? All 4 of our different entrees were excellent, as were the variety of sides you get to choose with each meal.
