VICAR’S MESSAGE
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
Greetings to all in the name of Christ Jesus!
We are living in a world of change. Every generation is baffled by its contemporary problems. We should certainly not underestimate the complexity of the issues, which confront the humankind today. A better approach to today‟s complicated world is to develop a Christian mind, namely a mind that is thoroughly informed and has firmly grasped the basic truths of the scriptures. Only such a mind can think with the Christian integrity about the problems of the contemporary world. Towards the beginning of Romans Chapter 12, Apostle Paul uses the expression “the renewing of your mind.” He urges that, in gratitude to God for his mercies, we should present our bodies to him as a living sacrifice. He exhorts not to be conformed to the world, but to be transformed by the renewing of the mind, which will have a radical effect on our lives and thus transform our behavior. If we want to live straight, we have to think straight. Our fallen mind follows the way of the world; but our renewed mind should be engrossed with the will of God.
Between the two, lies „repentanceâ€&#x; - a complete change of mind or outlook. The support we are receiving for the development of the parish is very much appreciable. Let us always remember that having a church and a place to worship as our own, is indeed a blessing. Its running and its future depends on each of our members. Our commitment to God and His ministry should be our prime responsibility, when we look back and count the blessings God has given us. Let us also be burdened by the financial constraints of our church. By the end of this year, we have to pay off the loan amount, which comes around $100 thousand. The General Body decided to collect $350/- from each family to clear the loan. I request all the parish members to donate the amount at the earliest. Regarding the subscription, even though the General Body has decided a minimum amount, I request the parishioners to rise to the occasion and contribute accordingly, for, God loves a cheerful giver!
Wishing you all a fruitful summer! May God bless you all!
Yours in Christ, Daniel Achen.
ASSOCIATE VICAR & YOUTH CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE
"As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease." Genesis 8:22
Dear Friends in Christ, One academic year is coming to completion and summer is at our doors. Changing seasons reminds us one spiritual truth about the God whom we serve, that is our God is, a God of changes, faithfulness, and consistency. The scripture reminds us that as long as the earth endures the different seasons on the earth will not cease. God's promises are true. Some of our youngsters have graduated, some got admission offers from colleges and professional schools, and some received their terminal degrees. I am thankful to God for our youngsters making positive impact in our community and nation with their education. In all their ways God was so faithful to them and we as a faith community are proud of them and our prayers need to be with them as well. Our Sunday school had the annual competitions on May 18th and it was a blessed event. Congratulations to all the participants! Our Youth Fellowship is planning to introduce a Youth Fellowship meeting at Church on every first and third Fridays of the month. Also in this summer a revival meeting, testify night, outreach mission activities are planned. I am happy to report that one person from our church is attending and many expressed their interest to participate in the Native American Mission outreach at Alabama. I also encourage the parents to send their children to Midwest Region Sunday School Junior camp hosted by our church in July and also the National Youth Conference at Toronto from August 1st to 4th, 2013. As a parish let us thrive together to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. I want to bring to your notice some events related

A REFLECTION ON FORMATIVE YEARS OF OUR PARISH Dr. M. V. Mathew Vice President
Dear Parishionerâ€&#x;s Greetings in the name of our Precious Lord and savior Jesus Christ, I was asked to write about the beginning of our parish by the messenger committee. It is rather difficult to write the 40 years of history in this short article but I will concentrate mostly on the earlier years of the formation and the evolution of our Parish. We are a small part of the universal diaspora church planted in this part of North America. By Godâ€&#x;s grace and mercy our journey was difficult but miraculous and very providential. As you all know in 1964 when we first came there were only 3 Mar Thomites here and there was no Mar Thoma congregation. Rev. P.T. Joseph (the present Metropolitan) came to Chicago to baptize our oldest son Pradeep. Subsequently the late Most Rev. Alexander Mar Thoma came to Chicago and conducted a Holy Communion service in the Episcopal Church which was attended by few non Mar Thomites also. Thirumeni encouraged us to conduct cottage prayers and to attend the services at the Episcopal Church. The thinking of the Episcopal Synod was not to have our own Churches but to be associated with and to become part of the Episcopal Church and our Achens to become Associate Vicars of the Episcopal Church. This was not acceptable to us the members and we met as a general body and passed a resolution to the effect that we wanted to be an independent church. Our congregation met many obstacles and hardships on the way especially to find places for worship. We started as an official Congregation in 1973 but without the services of a Vicar. Rev. Dr. Ipe Joseph came as our first vicar in 1977 but he was also the vicar for Detroit and Toronto Mar Thoma parishes. Before this the Chicago, the Detroit and the Toronto Mar Thoma parishes met to discuss the future. The Late Rt. Rev. Easow Mar Thimotheos Episcopa was present at that meeting and strongly encouraged us to stand firm on our decision to be independent. This was not well received by the episcopal Synod.
In 1977 we were accepted as a Congregation and Rev. Ipe Joseph was appointed as first Vicar. He was also a student at the Lutheran School of Theology at U of C. In addition he was in charge of Detroit and Toronto Congregations. We had no place of worship and used various places including gymnasiums, basements, chapels etc. In 1981 the late Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius, Suffragon Metropolitan visited all the North American parishes, extensive discussions with our members and the Episcopal Church was carried out. He came to the conclusion and submitted a well thought out report that the Mar Thoma church should stand independent and should enter into an agreement with the Episcopal Church for mutual support. In 1981 we were officially accepted as a parish and the present vicar General Rev. Dr. Cherian Thomas became the second Vicar. Under his leadership we decided to build the present church at Des Plaines. The dedication of the church was in November 1987 by the late Rt. Rev. Easow Mar Thiemotheos (the brother of Rev. V.T. John). We were blessed so much by our Lord from the very beginning and were able to overcome many obstacles and hardships by His Grace. Our members contributed generously and participated in all the activities in the past. We had strong leaderships from our Thirumenis, Achens and the Lay people. Let us be thankful to our Lord for His mercy and guidance throughout. There are many more things to narrate but due to limitation of space I shall end here. Let the Almighty God bless us all.
