VICAR’S MESSAGE Dearly Beloved in Christ, "Greetings to you all in the name of Jesus Christ" "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" St.Matt:22:37 This is the greatest commandment in the law and Jesus Christ reminds His followers about the need of this law. In the Bible we see many characters who loved and served God with their full heart and soul. We too say, yes, we love our Lord with all our heart, soul and mind. But in spite of this, many a times we do our will instead of finding out God's will - this is where we lack the "genuine love "which God wants. In 1Kings' chapter 19 we see the call of Elisha. Elisha's commitment is reflected in verse 21"He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them". He burned the ploughing equipment’s to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and become his attendant. Here Elisha does not want to even have the slightest idea of going back at any time. Otherwise he would have kept his ploughing equipment‟s safely just in case there should be any problem with his job conditions. We see many people in the Bible for their utmost commitment but I personally feel Elisha's commitment is a source of inspiration for my ministry. There should be no looking back! No room for doubts! Our God is not asking for adjustments but total surrender. Are we ready to submit ourselves fully to God - be it at our place of study or work!! be it at the crucial juncture of our lives or our important decision making especially regarding our children's education and their future! As the new academic year starts, I wish all the best for our students and invite them for the student dedication service on 4th or 11th of August 2013. The support we are receiving for the 310 Potter Road collection is very much appreciable. I request all the members of the parish to respond to this need positively. The registration for the Family retreat has already started and the parish is making all arrangements for the retreat. I earnestly urge all the

members to prayerfully make the decision to attend the retreat and making it fruitful for one and all. The summer is full of activities for the parish and I request everybody‟s co-operation. Yours in Christ, Daniel Achen

ASSOCIATE VICAR & YOUTH CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23) For the past two months God was faithful to our church by blessing us with so many opportunities to witness Him and learn from His word. As a church we have been reflecting on the theme Holy Spirit who renews the whole creation. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are received whereas His fruit are to be cultivated. In the month of June our Sunday school had the VBS which was attended by about 120 children. We were also blessed by our newly appointed Midwest Region Youth Chaplain Rev. George Cherian who led the VBS. During the VBS many of our children had the opportunity to recommit their lives to Jesus Christ. It was truly a blessed experience for all those who participated in it. In the past months our Youth Fellowship was involved in a number of ways for the spiritual and physical building up of His church on earth. Youth Fellowship hosted Testify Night in which our youths shared their testimonies and it was indeed a blessing for all. Every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month we had our regular Ignite Bible Study and area-based bible studies. In the month of July we had our Youth Fellowship‟s picnic at Niles and Dee Park, first outreach mission event of the year with Feed My Starving Children organization at Libertyville, IL, Pre- College Seminar at church and a Barbeque at Daniel Achen‟s parsonage. I am happy to inform that one of our Youth members Ms. Neethu Thampy from area 6 participated in the Native American Mission Trip at Alabama. Also I am happy to report that our Youth Fellowship is participating in the Diocesan Youth Fellowship Silver Jubilee project by providing educational scholarship to children in Mexico in connection with which our Youths conducted a

Bake Sale on July 28th. By God‟s grace Midwest Region Sunday School Junior camp also went well; it was a time of singing songs, testimony sharing, bible study, prayer, and fellowship. Please keep our Youth Fellowship and children in your personal prayers. On a different note I encourage you to pray for the family and friends of late Mr. Patrick Maruthmmotil who got killed in a road accident on his way to Native American Mission work of the Mar Thoma Church at Oklahoma. When I attended his wake service at Dallas, TX, I was moved by the testimonies about his life and witness for Christ. He was faithful to Jesus Christ and His great commission. I want to bring to your notice some events related to Youth Fellowship happening in our church in the months of August and September 2013. CHICAGO MAR THOMA CHURCH -THE 40 YEAR’S OF TRAVEL IN FAITH A reflection- Mr. N. M. Philip Dear Parishioner‟s According to historical records, the year 2013 is the 40th anniversary of the formation of an official Mar Thoma group in the Chicago area. Let us first and foremost praise and thank the Almighty who has brought us into this land, provided the means, sustained, protected and blessed us immensely. The Lord has truly blessed us as a parish beyond any of our expectations or imaginations. I would like to congratulate my fellow Marthomites in the Chicago area and offer best wishes as we stand at the threshold of another major milestone in the history of our parish. My intention here is not to rehash history; rather it is my own reflection of my association with the Chicago Mar Thoma Church from then until now. In 1973 the resources were tight for the new immigrants as well as those of us who were in the US on student visas. To draw a picture of the economic situation, the minimum wage was $1.60/hour ($8.25 now). The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 850 then; but now it is over 15, 400. The cost of a gallon of gasoline was 40 cents compared to the current $4.00. Despite numerous such financial, cultural and social challenges, the small number of the „pravasi‟ Marthomites were united, high spirited and determined to preserve their spiritual heritage. The changes that have taken place since then were beyond the expectations of the both the Church leadership as well as the laity. It was not a coincidence; but it was certainly God‟s providence. We are now reaping the spiritual benefits of God‟s providence. This enabled us to pass on to our 2nd generation a strong understanding of our cultural heritage, deep spiritual foundation, and dedication to the Lord‟s mission. Our work has not ended; it is inevitable that we take the time to analyze our ability to meet the changing needs of the new generation and

our willingness to be flexible to embrace timely changes. There are several challenges that we must address with prayer, care and foresight. We must concentrate on developing programs that will cater to the specific needs of our children, youth, young adults, adults and seniors so that they will be adequately equipped to meet the challenges of the times. There are discussions underway to discuss these challenges and how to address them; hence I am not going to delve on it. When we carefully evaluate these challenges such as faith, worship, Bible study, ministry, mission, counseling, etc., we come to the realization that these are not just concerns of just the 2 nd generation, but rather these transcend age and cultural barriers. The approaches we have adopted to deal with these issues may not have been effective in the past. The real question is not who is leaving or coming, but what we do to create an environment within our parishes to cultivate opportunities for close encounter with God, bring up a family with clear spiritual purpose, and maintain a high degree of integrity and commitment to faith. All of our Bishops and Achens have provided superb leadership towards our establishment, growth and development. The 1st generation members were able to stand together as one body and make enormous contributions of their time, talents and other resources for the common good. We must continue to utilize our enormous resources, talents, skills and energy to grow with a mission and plan with a vision. Everyone must feel that he or she is a part of this parish and everyone has a responsibility to contribute to its growth. To be able to successfully meet the challenges of the times, we must first come back to the basics; that is to recognize the true purpose of corporate worship. Our collective growth will be curtailed unless and until we are willing to put the common good ahead of personal desires and work together in harmony involving everyone in the process. When we willingly submit ourselves to these basic principles of holy living according to the Word of God, we will continue to flourish beyond limits. However if we lose sight of these basics, we might become distracted in our mission, confused in our vision and stagnant in our outlook. In whatever circumstances we are placed, despite what form of worship we choose, the critical aspect is to uphold the spiritual commitment solely founded on the values and infallibility of the Word of God.

On a personal level, I feel fortunate to have been part of every historical milestone of our Church. To cite a few, I had the privilege of assisting the late Metropolitan Alexander Mar Thoma (then Alexander Mar Theophilus Episcopa) when the Lordship celebrated the Holy Communion Service in May 1973 that set the stage for the official beginning. In November 1976, when the representatives of the Chicago, Detroit and Toronto groups met in Detroit under the leadership of late The Rt. Rev. Easo Mar Timotheos to jointly sponsor our first vicar, I drafted the joint petition and signed on behalf of the Chicago Mar Thoma Congregation. I had the privilege of serving this parish in all key positions as vice president, treasurer, secretary (a dozen times) and in other capacities. I recollect with gratitude the blessed opportunities to serve the diocese as a diocesan assembly member, diocesan council member, secretary (1996) and vice president (2006) of the National Family Conferences. I am grateful to God Almighty and thankful to our members for the privilege of being part of this Church, which I love most dearly. It is important to acknowledge that the Mar Thoma Church gave me and my family a sense of identity and belonging. When I first came to this country as a student in 1970, I did not envision the prospect of settling down and raising a family here. The fellowship I received from the Church members made it easier to feel at home in a foreign land. I would like to acknowledge that my family and I have benefited from the Chicago Mar Thoma Church and the Diocese much more than anything I did or could ever repay. May the Lord bless us and guide us so that His name alone will be glorified through our humble efforts in this land. As our Church motto says, „we are lighted to lighten others around us‟. I earnestly hope and pray that the light will keep on shining for generations to come in this great country. When I put our „exodus‟ to America in to perspective, the important thing I remind myself and my family is the admonition found in Deuteronomy, 8:7-18, part of which reads as follows: “For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills …10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all

you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, … 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today”.

YOUTH FELLOWSHIP Alabama Mission Trip A note by Ms. Neethu Thampy I was fortunate enough to attend this year‟s mission trip in Mt. Vernon, Alabama from June 8th – 14th for the Choctaw Native Americans. These Native American mission trips began as a part of the Mar Thoma Church's effort to reach out to our neighbors in North America. Since 2003, the Diocese has been working with the Choctaw and Houma Native American communities living in Alabama, Oklahoma and Louisiana. The Mar Thoma church has entered into this community to show our Christian love and work together to foster fellowship, deepen Christian faith, provide mentoring, empower parents and youths, and encourage local leadership. I was in charge of games for all of the kids (about 120 from pre-K to 8th), and other volunteers were helping out by teaching VBS classes, introducing crafts, leading singing sessions, and conducting devotional services. I hope that we are able to have more youth participate in these mission trips next year. May God bless us all.
