Mission Statement econd’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.

Now That’s News

I

n 1809, with Napoleon sweeping through Austria, the world was in such upheaval that nobody paid much attention to baby news. Yet during that year, Abraham Lincoln, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Charles Darwin, Alfred Tennyson, Edgar Allen Poe and William Gladstone were born. Although the attention was on an Austrian battlefield, “history was actually being shaped in the cradles of England and America,” writes Charles Swindoll. “Similarly, everyone thought taxation was the big news when Jesus was born. But a young Jewish woman cradled the biggest news of all: the birth of the Savior.”

“The Secret of a Splendid Sublime Christmas” Sons and Daughters of Faith; The Bible says, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting … For now He shall be great to the ends of the Earth; and this One shall be peace” (Micah 5:2, 4b, 5a).

O

ne of clearest and most undeniable prophecies of the Messiah’s birth is given to us in this passage from the Prophet Micah. By divine inspiration, 700 years before the birth of Jesus Christ, Micah recorded these awesome words, declaring the Son’s preexistence with the Father, where and how He would be born in His incarnation, and what He would come to give to the world.

This passage was quoted by the Priests and Scribes when Herod inquired about the place of the Messiah’s birth. Christ Jesus was born in time to be the Savior of all time. The specificity of Micah’s prophecy of the place reminds us of Christ’s incarnate life and all He revealed about God, and did for us on the cross. On this Christmas Day, take time to reflect on all that is yours because He lived among us and don’t miss what God said through Micah about the purpose of Messiah’s coming; “And this One shall be peace.” Christ does not just give peace, He is peace! He is the peace for forgiveness and reconciliation; the confidence of eternal life! That’s the secret of a splendid and sublime Christmas celebration. Christ came from the Father to reconcile us to the Father so that we might know the Father, live in peace with Him, and accept that we are loved now. Amen. Until He comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd

“Why Was Silent Night Written” he story goes like this… in 1818 a roving band of actors performing in towns throughout the Austrian Alps arrived on December 23rd at Oberndorf, a village near Salzbury. They had planned to re-enact the story of Christ’s birth in the small Church of St. Nicholas. However, the organ at St. Nicholas was out of order, thus, resulting in the performance

from the first chapters of Matthew and Luke being presented in a private home. After the performance Josef Mohr, assistant pastor, was in a meditative mood, and walked the long way home, over a hill looking down on the village. The awesome, peaceful snow -covered village and thoughts of the Christmas play reminded him of a poem he had written a couple of years before; about the night angels announced the birth of Jesus to shepherds on the hillside. The following evening Mohr planned to present the carol to the congregation. He realized he did not have any music to which the poem could be sung. The church organist Frank Xaver Gruber composed a melody for the poem to be sung while being accompanied by guitar. Thus, this first performance began the journey for “Silent Night” to become world known. D

ear God, please grant peace on Earth, good will toward all mankind during this Christmas Season; and always, in Jesus

name, Amen. This is very nice prayer, and one we hope will come to pass. But we see this is not the direction of the world we live in today. Even if we could wipe out homelessness in Los Angeles County, that would be an answered prayer. If cancer was wiped out, even better! Until these things happen, we continue to support the less fortunate, the sick and those who are in need by giving Thanksgiving baskets for a Thanksgiving meal; toys for Christmas so some child will have a smile, and supporting other efforts all year round.

“And let us not grow weary while doing good; for in due season, we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (Galatians 6:9). It is my prayer that everyone enjoys this Christmas Season, being mindful of how blessed we are! God sent His son, Jesus Christ, from Heaven to live among us. He died so we could live, and all we have to do is ask for forgiveness, and we are forgiven. He has been good to us even when we do not get exactly what we want in life. We are still blessed! Merry Christmas to All and Many Blessings in the New Year!

oberta Flack's Christmas Songs features beautiful interpretations of Holiday classics including 'The Christmas Song,' 'We Three Kings of Orient Are,' 'Little Drummer Boy,' and 'O Come All Ye Faithful,' as well as original tunes 'There's Still My Joy,' (Beth Nielsen Chapman and Melissa Manchester) and '25th of Last December' . Christmas Songs represents a true labor of love for Roberta Flack. Her classic 1997 Christmas album has now been newly mixed, produced and packaged, plus an additional new song 'Cherry Tree Carol,' has been added.

The traditional three colors of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty.

his month I have decided to take a page out of my own cookbook. With cooking daily meals at home, when the office askes to join in the Christmas potluck. I know I need to find the easiest , low effort, high presentation food. So for all of you who want to impress but not stress this is for you. SANTA Brownie! All you need is Brownie Mix, white icing and red strawberries. That’s it! Make your box or homemade brownies. I suggest putting a fudge layer on the brownies. Cut the brownies in 1 to 2 inches . Lay them on a beautiful platter. Then pipe a small amount of white icing to cover the top of the brownie with fudge icing . Take your cleaned and fresh strawberries and cut the stem off and place the strawberry on top. TAA– DAA! Santa Brownies and your done!

FOR UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN

T

Merry Christmas Saints of God!!!! his is the time of year for giving! As God gave us His Son, we give gifts to our loved ones and friends. This, however, is also the time of year for giving something that is not so nice, the

Flu. The flu is a virus and it does not respond to antibiotics. Unlike a cold, the flu virus attacks quickly with symptoms that include: Fever (up to 102 degrees), Weakness, Fatigue, Muscle aches, Chills, Sneezing, Runny nose and Headache These symptoms can last from last 5-7 days. Although a person with the flu feels very ill it seldom leads to serious complications. The illness is usually only dangerous to infants, older adults (seasoned) and people with chronic illnesses. Prevention: Get a flu shot every year if you are over 65, have a chronic illness, and maybe exposed to people at high risk for the flu. Keep your resistance to infection up with a good diet, rest and exercise. Wash your hands frequently and keep your hands away from nose, eyes and mouth. Home treatment: Get plenty of rest Drink extra fluids at least one glass of water or juice every hour while awake. Medications for fever, muscle aches and headaches as ordered by your MD. See or talk to a Pediatrician for infants and small children with flu-like symptoms. *** Talk to your MD for symptoms that seem to get better then gets worse again*** Stay Healthy!!!! James E. THANK YOU On Tuesday, November 24th, 2015, Second Baptist Church Inc. opened its doors to the community at large during its Annual Thanksgiving Dinner and Food Drive. Over 80 patrons were in attendance and received a warm meal, fellowship, and a food box with trimmings for a Thanksgiving meal. Each year, SBC’s Pantry and Mission of Mercy Ministry, team-up during the Thanksgiving Season to provide assistance to men, women and children in need, however, additional partnerships were formed to meet the needs this year. Prepared food baskets and stuffing were provided by Prayer Warriors and Latinos for Hope. SET-for-Life gave a monetary donation that helped with the dinner and purchasing of turkeys. Set-for-Life also invited the Center of Community Alliance for Research and Education (CCARE) and Community Health Alliance of Pasadena (ChapCare) out to the event, where staff provided free health screenings to the men, women and children in attendance. Thank you – ALL - who gave of your time, talents, and treasures. Together we met the needs of families, and as we embark upon the Christmas Season, remember, JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON.
