There is a helpful message in I Thessalonians 2:1-12. Verses 11-12 say “As you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.”

Do you ever find yourself loving just to be loved? If so, that’s not Christian love. Most of the times when we say, “I love you” we are saying, “I desperately need you”! Whenever we love in order to assure a return of love, we are disappointed. The reason is that no one can love us as much as we need to be loved. Only Christ Jesus can do that!

If we saint try to manipulate from another person what we were meant to receive from God, we will create an idol who will eventually fall from his or her pedestal. The Lord’s approval is all that is important.

Verse 4 declares, “But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who test our hearts.” The apostle Paul was freed to be one of the most courageous lovers of all time. That’s what he meant when he wrote, “For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit.”

(Verse 3).

Always remember that original love from the Lord frees us from the endless effort to please people. When we know that He is pleased with us in spite of what we’ve been or done, that He offer forgiveness and a million new beginnings, we can get out of the sick syndrome of trying to please the people around us.

Perhaps you are in one of those slumps right now depending on people’s response to you more than on the assurance of Christ’s “I’ll never-let-you-go” quality of love. It happens to all of us. We can all remember times when we were hurt so badly that we questioned whether we wanted to try to love again.

I encourage you to follow Paul’s demonstrated love for the Thessalonians because it proves what love can do. It was not only original love from the undisputed origin of Christ Himself, it was a love distinguished by the next aspect of the authentic. It was genuine.

Let us get on with loving sincerely with no expectation of love returning to us. Amen Until He Come, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. La Rue Dillard Parish under-shepherd
