Stanley No. 1 Bench Plane This slightly rusted No. 1 and original box sold on 4 May 2009 for $2,918. It was the most expensive Stanley Plane sold on eBay in 2009. Second place went to a Stanley No. 10 ÂźC that sold for $2,500 on June 19th. Third place goes to a beautiful Stanley No. 87 that sold for $2,225 on June 7th, and a surprise 4th place goes to a set of Stanley No. 55 Special Cutters that sold for $2,010.89 on August 23rd. In these pages you can see them all, approximately $75,000 worth of numbers 1 through 608, and there is plenty of room left over to keep track of your own collection.

The Stanley Plane Collector’s Checklist

The Stanley Bench Plane Shadow Box was inspired by John Walter’s covers for his books on Antique and Collectable Stanley Tools. I made this box to display numbers 1 through 8, both high and low knobs, steel, and aluminum. Someday I might swap the high knobs for the Bed Rocks. I’m just one plane away from a perfect display. My wife was inspired by some old Stanley artwork and provided the finishing touch by a modern version of the Stanley Imp we call Imp Junior. Just in case you missed it and someday you are playing Trivia Pursuit (The Antique Tool Edition), John Walter’s shadow box from his 1990 book sold December 14th on eBay for $258.03. 4

Introduction

I like old hand tools. I especially like the old Stanly Planes. With every passing year the number of collector quality planes grows smaller. Most have been replaced by modern electric tools. There are still a few skilled craftsmen that realize the value of a sharp blade in a good plane. I enjoy using my planes and I have planes that I will never use. I’ve bought planes that I fully intended to use and after cleaning them up I decided they look to good to use! Most of the planes that were replaced by their modern electric counterparts were set aside and eventually forgotten until someone comes along and decides to clean the place up. Those that don’t get tossed out with the trash end up at yard sales, auctions, and eBay. If you collect Stanley planes this book is for you. The primary purpose of this book is to provide you with an organized way to track your Stanley plane collection. If you are missing parts you can track that too. You also get an alternative pricing guide and lots of pictures to help identify planes when all you have to work from is a bad eBay picture. Has your wife ever asked you what you are going to do will all of those planes? In April 2009 the “Rollie” collection was sold in a live auction. This collection was the result of one man’s lifetime spent collecting antique tools. Over 5,000 tools in all, including over 1,000 planes, were sold in a three day auction and in just a few days the first “Rollie” plane was on eBay. eBay is possibly the best thing that has ever happened when it comes to collecting planes. While yard sales and live auctions may still be the best way to find a bargain, the odds are against you when it comes to finding the elusive Stanley No. 1. Before eBay, a collector could spend a lifetime searching for an uncommon or rare plane. Most collectors were happy just to find a No. 1 in any 6

condition. Now with a little patience and a lot of money, you can choose between a Type 1 and a Sweet Heart, and you can be picky about its condition. When I first started collecting Stanley Planes I “tried” to focus on numbers 1 through 8. Before long my focus flew the coup and I needed to find an easy way to keep track my planes. I bought a worn and tattered John Walters’ book from a fellow plane collector. On the pages of this Stanley tool collector’s Holy Grail he had recorded his planes, the date he bought them, and how much he had paid for them. Keep in mind that the prices in this book are based on eBay sales only! Planes that sell at tool auctions typically go higher and the same is true for those that are sold by reputable tool dealers. There are several pricing guides available and the more you have the better. What is unique about this book is you are getting a sales summary and pictures of the planes that sold on eBay in 2009. When you compare this book to your other price guides you might be surprised at some of the 2009 eBay sales! It’s important to know how this book was done. Early in 2009 I started pulling pictures and listings for the highest sale price for all Stanley planes. On average I did this once every 45 days in order to obtain a fairly accurate sampling of winning bids. In the following pages you will see prices that are both considerably higher and lower than you might expect. There were a lot of collectors that were willing to spend a lot of money and others got some great deals! I am providing you with another tool to help you decide just how much you should be willing to pay for your next plane.

I have collected over 1,600 pictures and they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t all be put in this book. Only the planes that commanded the highest bid are pictured in these pages along with the Average Cost for each plane number. If you are one of the collectors that bid high your plane could be in this book, but keep in mind that it is possible I could have missed it. When searching the completed listings in eBay I noticed there appears to be a random limit to the duration that an ended listing is retained in the eBay database. Along with the over 1,600 pictures, I also downloaded the complete listing for each of the planes. These pictures and listings are on the CD with this book. The pictures and eBay listings will help you determine the condition of the planes that collectors paid top dollar for and may help you determine how high to bid when the next No. 444 shows up on eBay. Please keep in mind that several Stanley planes did not sell on eBay during 2009 and in some instances these planes were low value/common planes. They just were not there when I searched. I also did not point out all instances where the planes came with a box so you need to look at the listings to be sure. You will notice that sometimes I put more than one picture on a page. I added pictures to show nickel plated vs. japanned, flat side vs. round, and sometimes just to provide better pictures when the high bid picture was bad. The largest picture on the page was the eBay high. I also threw in pictures of the spoke shaves when they had the same number as a plane. I hope this book provides you with a useful tool. Good luck!
