There’s been quite a few new faces recently appear at Granada thanks to our continued success. We caught up with a few of the newbies...

irst up in our parade of new faces is new Business Development Manager, Andrew Smith. Working with the Granada commercial and trade teams, his role will include liaising with approved partners, helping to support our growing network of installers and specifiers. With 27 years

experience in the Fenestration Industry, Andrew is sure to bring a wealth of knowledge to the company and our customers.

He says: “Customers lie at the heart of Granada’s business. The products are unrivalled in quality, but it’s the quality of our support that customers most value. From installation and sales training to technical and marketing support, we are focused on delivering the complete package.”

Rob Goulty joined our marketing team back in February and has been busy behind the scenes, working on the redevelopment of the Granada website.

Rob specialises in digital marketing and has a passion for Google AdWords.

He can often be found tweaking and adjusting ongoing campaigns to ensure the best possible ROI. Additionally, Matthew Rain has joined our Architectural team. Matthew is a great addition as he has worked within the fenestration market for over 14 years.

Focusing on primary glazing, he boasts a wealth of knowledge within the new build sector. Matthew says “Granada’s expansion and drive in to the new build market is not only exciting but this has been identified as a huge area of growth within the Granada Group.”

Matthew’s focus is to generate new business and increase Granada’s presence in the Southern region.

In Matthew’s spare time he can be often found on the rugby field as he coaches his local girls rugby team based in Peterborough.

Nick continued: “We’ve reduced the sightline of this window to 72mm, which is 18mm slimmer than our existing 90mm Heritage unit. Compared side by side, the difference is huge – particularly on smaller windows.”

With the product in its infancy, it will still need to undergo independent acoustic testing. However, the Granada team are certain that this will be their quietest window yet, due to the double QLon seals and snug fitting featured on each window unit.

Head of trade sales, Deborah Beeley, believes the latest addition to the range will prove a hit with customers and installers alike: “Requests for a more discreet hinged unit continue to increase, so it’s great that we now have a product to meet this demand.”

“We’ve managed to develop a product that balances discreet aesthetics with thermal and acoustic performance,” concludes Deborah. “Like the rest of our traditional range products, our new hinged unit can be manufactured and delivered within ten working days.”

interview In an industry not known for rapid changes, we are bucking the trend by bringing new products, new people and fresh ideas to the table, using the show as the ideal launch vehicle. Head of trade sales, Deborah Beeley, catches her breath and discusses the latest developments.

There’s a lot going on at the moment.

What’s been the biggest change in recent months?

Well, we have a lot of new people, with new ideas and an interest in making a big difference. It seems the acceptance of the product has really broken through in recent months and customers of all types are giving us great feedback.

What is the most important thing customers are looking for when purchasing secondary glazing?

People want a product they can trust, something that works well, is a reasonable price, and is backed up by a company they can rely on. This is particularly important in our industry where we have major contracts with national partners, including hotel chains, museums, banks, etc., but it’s also true for the domestic market.

What are the advantages of secondary glazing over Double Glazing?

The most obvious is the cost. Double glazing is considerably more expensive, requiring entirely new units. It might also not be possible, due to conservation issues or messy and difficult to achieve due to the original building or a need to remove all the old frames. Secondary glazing installation is quick and simple, and the cost-savings are instant. Double glazing also does not perform anywhere near as well at insulating sound, which is one of our customer’s favorite features.

What do installers say about the product?

That it is quick to install and not disruptive to the customer. I also hope they would comment on the support they receive. We work hard to make sure they have all the information they need to be knowledgeable in front of their customers. It’s effective and looks great too!

How are we helping installers and specifiers?

We’ve developed a new Approved Partnership programme offering incentives and support to our key trade customers. There’s a great new demonstration area at our head office and a number of upgrades to our production facilities. We’ve brought in new people to be out on the road helping with installation questions and troubleshooting. There’s additional marketing support – we now have our own dedicated in-house team – and our commercial technical surveyor, Mark Rowe has taken on an additional advisory role in support of our partners.

Yes! We’re launching a new slimline hinged unit and we have a number of new options available across the range – it’s been a busy few months.

What are the key areas of concern for end users?

The main areas are reducing their energy costs, being warm and comfortable, and sound prevention. A huge portion of our carbon emissions come from buildings, the UK now has strict carbon reduction targets in place, this places

energy reduction up there as a key issue for our corporate customers. Another concern is sound prevention. More and more people are living, working and studying in buildings that just do not suit the demands of modern day life. That’s why our secondary glazing products are ideal.

Where do you see the future heading for the fenestration sector?

It’s only going to get better. Materials, techniques, capabilities are always improving, the concepts may be wellproven, but the challenge is to keep methods of production and installation simple and low-cost to encourage continued interest.

What lessons did we learn from the FitShow?

It’s a great opportunity to get feedback from customers, potential customers and their distributors.

Although information and specification details for all our products is readily available, you cannot underestimate the value of seeing and hearing it in the flesh, talking to experts and really getting a feel for how our products can help improve your project. We’ve built a ‘traffic soundbox’ to demonstrate Granada products’ unique soundproofing capabilities.

Plus Mark Rowe, our technical support trainer, will also be providing live demonstrations to showcase just how simple our products are to install.

Our products can be found in some esteemed places, but few equal the prestige and status of those in the city of dreaming spires.

F

rom future Kings and High Court judges, to documentary makers, Chancellors to PLC chairmen, many of the nation’s most preeminent figures have graced the corridors of Magdelen College, Oxford.

Yet, despite its prestige, the central location and age of the building, a converted Victorian schoolhouse, raises a number of challenges, particularly in the world famous library.

Problems including outdated plumbing and electrics, poor lighting and acoustics and erratic heating, has led to a major renovation project, with a target fund of £7.5m.

Dr Paul Beckwith, who read for a DPhil (Oxford’s term for PhD) in chemistry at Magdalen and worked in financial services in New York and Hong Kong, is closely associated with the college and has become a major donor.

“Between the severe lack of space, traffic noise and woeful heating in the old library, we were letting our students down,” says Dr Beckwith.

“I was delighted to be the first to give financial support

to this inspired project. The new library will be a terrific addition to the College.”

The library building, described by many as one of the great libraries of the world, is actually a converted 300 year old church, with 6.5m high windows and ornate, if irregular arches.

With traffic noise increasing and the required acoustic performance higher than a typical building, the Granada team spent considerable time demonstrating the potential benefits of secondary glazing to an initially sceptical conservation officer.

“We knew it would be a challenge, but finding the right solution was certainly within reach,” says commercial sales director, Mike Latham.

“You can imagine that any solution for windows so high would raise concerns regarding the fixtures required to take the considerable weight. There were concerns, but the contractors, Stepnell, had faith in our ability to fulfill the brief.

ou could be forgiven for thinking that acoustics is strictly musical or architectural in nature.

it is not always possible to foresee issues that occur later, perhaps by a change of use.

Music and architectural spaces may take the bulk of the acoustician limelight, but the science covering the study of all mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids, touches a vast range of topics, including: noise control, SONAR for submarine navigation, ultrasounds for medical imaging, thermoacoustic refrigeration, seismology, bioacoustics, and electroacoustic communication.

Are noise problems just an inconvenience or can they be more serious?

Part artist, part scientist, the acoustician balances a creative, scientific and practical skillset to deliver advice, usually in the form of noise surveys. Secondary glazing is one of the key weapons in the acoustician’s arsenal, helping to specify results that cut out the noisy outside world and deliver peace and quiet.

We asked Yuliya to give a little insight into the acousticians’ challenge…

What does the acoustician do?

We measure, record and generally advise developers on how they can make spaces more comfortable for those utilising them. Good acoustical design in concert halls and recording studios is one thing, but people spend much more of their time in homes, offices, factories, or classrooms. Building good acoustics into the design of a building is important, but

Occupational health drives a lot of our work. We’ll work backwards from the legislation to see where a problem will or won’t occur – we don’t make the rules! Factories require measures to be in place where noise exceeds 80-85 Db, for example, but it’s important not to underestimate the impact noise can have on someone’s quality of life.

How does one become an acoustician?

There are specialist degree courses available for the application of sound knowledge in difference sectors. An Acoustical Engineering course is one way. Lots of acousticians do post-graduate courses, which can be very challenging. The Institute of Acoustics do a great job in promoting courses, such as the Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control.

What’s the most interesting part of the job?

The interest comes from the variety of challenges we face.

It’s not a simple job,

and every site has its own unique issues.

The problems could be far greater or fewer just a couple of doors down the road.

What are the biggest causes of noise problems? Are we becoming less tolerant of noise?

Traffic is by far the biggest problem, but plant and machinery also. It’s perhaps not a case of tolerance, but the fact we are more aware, and are living and working ever-closer to sources of noise or potential disturbance. Ventilation in commercial buildings, for example, can get referred to the council and they contact acoustician’s to look into it.

Are different sounds more problematic than others?

Low frequency noises can be difficult to deal with. Oil-powered generators can sometimes produce a low rumble that it is almost impossible to hide or drown out. Exposed fridges in restaurants are problematic, and can be put in enclosures.

It’s not always the building fabric where the answer is found, for example, you can look to replace or modify the noise

source by enclosing or masking it.

What type of challenges might an acoustician face?

In Salford there is a new residential development that is changing the use of a 20 story office block into accommodation. On the one side there’s the problem created by traffic noise, on the other there’s a waterfall!

Occasionally, a developer will add a waterfall to mask noises – you can see this in action outside Sheffield train station. It’s creating a more pleasant sound that is masking the noise from the trains. Waterfalls also generate a medium to high frequency sound, whereas traffic is low. Resolving those together, requires some creative thinking.

As well as being a superb forum for us to demonstrate the capabilities of secondary glazing, it also proved a very popular destination, breaking all previous visitor records, and attracting over 8,500 visitors across three days.

For installers, the emphasis was on practical demonstrations and how to troubleshoot common issues. Mark Rowe, Granada’s technical advisor with over 20 years’ fitting experience was on hand, providing live product demon-

strations, as well as imparting advice.

“We have one of the easiest products on the market to fit,” says Mark, “We were grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate the best ways to install products both with a wooden subframe and without. Sizing is incredibly important and for that we rely upon the expertise and attention to detail of our many trade partners.”

Keeping Up With The Joneses

F

or Paul and wife Amanda, having a comfortable home which meets their family’s needs is essential.

All four of the couple’s children have varying degrees of Autism, with the youngest in particular being very sensitive to noise coming from outside the house.

Paul explained “Our house is for the most part ideal. Close to work for me and plenty of space for Amanda to home school our two youngest, but the street outside can be quite busy.”

“Noise from passing traffic and voices at night travel straight up to the kid’s bedrooms”, continues Paul “being Autistic, they are sensitive to elevated noise levels and have problems getting to sleep. We struggled to keep their rooms noise free and bedtime had become a real issue. We were in

desperate need of something to make their bedrooms better for them.” Known for its ability to outperform double glazing for its acoustic performance, secondary glazing is a great choice for bedrooms where noise is an issue.

Correctly fitted, it can reduce sound by as much as 54dB, that’s 80% in an average home. Working for Granada, Paul is well versed in the benefits of our products and is pleased to have been given the chance to test secondary glazing in his own home.

Ready For Take Off?

i

t would be reasonable to assume that any operation serving 70 million customers each year; bringing in billions for the exchequer; employing over 76,000 people, and regularly lauded as one of the world’s best, to have the full support of the government for future growth. But when that operation is Heathrow Airport, it’s not quite as straightforward...

Noise pollution is regularly cited as a major factor for those wanting its expansion not to go ahead, and in July 2015 this became a key aspect of the Davies Commission report, looking at future expansion.

The decision to recommend the go-ahead for a new third runway, was given on the proviso that a legally binding ‘noise envelope’ is put in place, with firm limits on the level of noise created by the airport.

At the moment, about 650 planes take off each day along one of the “Noise Preferential Routes” - 1.9 mile-wide (3km) corridors set by the Department for Transport (DfT) in the 1960s to minimise noise disturbance to the airport’s neighbours.

The huge expansion in housing around the Greater London area since then means there are many more

people living along those routes, but technology has also moved on, and the noise people feel in their homes can be greatly reduced through modern fenestration techniques.

Secondary glazing leads the way, thanks to its unique soundproofing and draught prevention capabilities.

Whilst the high-frequency noise of aircraft taking off is greatly reduced by secondary glazing, where it really comes into its own is in blocking out low frequency sounds, in particular, road noise.

Aircraft noise, as measured in EPNdB (Effective Perceived Noise in Decibels), has dropped thanks to aircraft design improvements, but the annoyance people experience is less easy to quantify and can be exacerbated by the frequency and variety of different noises heard. In fact, it may not be up in the air at all that residents should look. As far as Heathrow’s extension is concerned, the real villain of the piece is

likely to be traffic. Busier airports bring more cars, buses, taxis and lorries and as well as aircraft. Inevitably, it also brings road works - six billion pounds worth of additional work is planned for the M25 alone.

Reducing external noise is not one of the primary drivers of innovation in the automobile industry. We, of course, would advocate improved acoustic soundproofing via secondary glazing, but the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea has found its own way of tackling at least part of the problem. Complaints about the noise from million pound supercars revving their engines around Harrods have led the council to introduce new anti-social behaviour laws. Banning Middle-Eastern princes from racing their Lamborghinis or performing stunts in their gold Ferraris will alleviate the nuisance for some, but for those living in perhaps more modest parts of town, it’s comforting to know there’s a simpler alternative to keeping the outside world at bay.

As members of the RIBA CPD Providers Network, we regularly run CPD seminars to provide specifiers with a better understanding of the benefits of secondary glazing.

Our seminars provide up to date information but also help showcase some of the great work going on within the business.

CPD seminars are a crucial part of our offering and help show the full depth of what we have to offer those who work with us. We have further strengthened that offer with the recent appointment of business development manager, Robert Walton.

Premier League

A

Grade II-listed building, the Art Deco store features huge windows which helped to set the flagship store apart, as well as making it the ideal venue for cabaret nights, ballroom dancing, Christmas parties and corporate functions until the late 1990s.

Despite the prime location the building has largely stood empty for almost a decade. All that has changed since construction group, Interserve, set to work on the Gallowgate project and began to bring the building back to life.

One of the most significant new occupiers is Premier Inn, who will now operate a 184-bed hotel in an ideal citycentre location. Premier Inn, one of the most prolific hotel builders in the UK, has extremely strong corporate values and places the promise of a good night’s sleep at the heart of its offering.

There are many facilities, furnishings and services a hotel can provide to its guests, to help meet a promise; the comfort of a Hypnos bed perhaps or a choice of firm or soft pillow. Guests

undoubtedly want the right location but they also want to enjoy peace and quiet; quite the task when the hotel is based no more than 150 yards from St James’ Park, home to over 52,000 passionate Geordies, creating sound levels that roar throughout the city. The nightlife in Newcastle is also very lively, with pubs and clubs open into the early hours.

During the construction of the hotel, Granada were appointed to provide secondary glazing that would be discreet, aesthetically pleasing and provide the noise reduction that would help keep the guests of the Premier Inn satisfied.

Granada installed one of its own ‘Premier’ products, by fitting secondary glazing with outstanding acoustic properties. Not only does the secondary glazing reduce noise by a substantial level, complementing existing primary window but adding a void to stop sound travelling inwards, it also increases the warmth and security of the room.

It has taken around 12 months and a £30m investment to turn a former Co-Operative department store in Newcastle City Centre into luxurious retail, leisure and hotel facilities.

The iconic store extends to nearly 170,000ft2 and has been a feature of the North East city skyline since it opened back in the 1930’s...

and outperforms doubling glazing significantly. To put this into values and figures, the U-Value has gone from 5.5 to 0.7; the lower the value, the better the material is as a heat insulator.

Henley residents get new Hospital

H

enley -on- Thames residents finally have their long awaited new hospital. The opening of Townlands hospital marks the end of a 30-year campaign to stop the old hospital being closed and then the demand for it to be rebuilt.
