What every parent needs to have on hand

What’s on the plate?

Child nutrition at every age

A balanced diet supports children’s growing brains and bodies and sets up healthy eating habits. But parents know, getting kids to eat a healthy diet takes more than putting nutritious food in front of them. Beyond holding off on the sugar, fat and processed foods and focusing on fruits and veggies, parents need to navigate how much to serve, how often kids should eat, and how to get little ones to actually eat the healthy food you offer.

Why pay attention to what your child eats?

Kids need a wide range of foods to get nutrients for growth and development. Children who don’t get enough healthy food, or can’t access healthy food, can become undernourished. That can lead to being underweight or overweight, weaker immune systems, and increased risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol later in life, so there are lasting reasons to set healthy eating habits now.

Of course, not everyone has a child that will wolf down whatever is offered, and parents are busy, so it can be tempting to reach for convenience meals and processed snacks. The goal isn’t perfection but to set an example of healthy eating habits that pay off over a lifetime.

Are the nutrition needs different for different ages?

The basics of healthy eating hold across all ages, including adults: a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and proteins; avoid sugar, fat and additives; and stay well

hydrated.

The amount of food children eat will fluctuate as they grow, but at every age, we all need a variety of foods from all the food groups. Vegetables and fruits can be a challenge with some kids, but they do need the nutrients and fiber that they provide. Getting a cup of veggies into a toddler might seem like a lot, but you can build it into other parts of meals like zucchini added into pasta or fruit on their cereal. How to feed a toddler and kindergartener

The overall nutrition needs for kids at different ages are similar, even if portion sizes are not. But there might be different tastes or challenges at different development stages.

Toddlers, ages 1 to 2 years old, don’t need adult-sized portions since they’ve got toddler-sized stomachs. It’s normal for kids at this age to devour what’s in front of them one day and have a smaller appetite the next. As long as they

are getting good nutrition from all the food groups, that’s fine.

Especially at 3 to 5 years old, kids may exert control through food, refusing foods or refusing to eat. Kids can go through phases like only wanting one kind of food or having a conniption when their foods touch! We’ve all been there. If it’s healthy food and you can get them to eat it, go for it.

Rather than focus on a single meal, think of nutrition as addition – it needs to add up to heathy eating over the week. Offer a variety of healthy foods they like and let them have a choice of different colors, tastes and textures. If you can, find at least one healthy food from each food group that your child likes and try to have this food always available.

It’s great age to get schoolaged kids more involved in meal prep by helping with the shopping or cooking, which helps them understand healthy eating by teaching them about food.

How much food should my child be eating?

Every child has different calorie needs, and their appetites can fluctuate up and down. You can provide modest portions of healthy foods and let your child decide how much to eat. Most children do well with three meals and two or three snacks a day, on a regular schedule. When your child’s body is used to a schedule, hunger and appetite are more regular.

Kids needs and wants around food change over time. You goal is to encourage choosing healthy foods, make sure they are available, and set a good example with your own eating and lifestyle choices that can set up healthy patterns for life.

ou don’t want to get this phone call at 9:15 a.m. on the first day of second grade:

“I’m sorry, but you need to come and get your daughter. Her EpiPen and paperwork aren’t updated for this year, and she cannot legally be here until they are.”

We won’t identify the chagrined parent this happened to, but we’ll give you this tip: Avoid the sad (and/or mad) child and the frantic trip to the clinic by taking some time this summer to make sure you’re caught up on:

• An annual well-child visit

• Any necessary vaccines or boosters

• Medication and a school action plan for conditions such as allergies, asthma and diabetes. (These generally have to be updated every year.)

• A sports physical, if needed

“We tend to get inundated with paperwork

Be a prepared parent

Don’t forget to schedule routine visits

as the first day of school gets closer,” said Dr. Andrea Donalty, a pediatrician and the primary care medical director for Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Network.

She’s a big proponent of the annual wellchild visit, which some families will schedule in the child’s birth month for ease of remembering, or maybe in the summer or at back-to-school time for easier scheduling. Any time of the year is fine.

At Mary Bridge Children’s, 20 or 30 minutes is set aside for a comprehensive well-child visit with a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner. It includes:

• Vaccines as necessary

• Evaluation of the child’s growth

• Assessment of their social and emotional development

• Screening for anxiety and depression

• Beginning in the adolescent years, a (legally protected) private conversation between patient and provider, covering topics such as drugs, alcohol and sexual activity.

This visit is also the time to get paperwork completed for sports participation or an “action plan” for a chronic condition. Basically, “You get a sports physical — and then some,” Dr. Donalty said.

A sports physical alone is much less involved. It involves filling out a document required by schools every year (or two years). It clears a student for sports participation by essentially ruling out any risk factors that could make athletic activity risky.

Knowing how much, and how quickly, kids and their interests can change, “If there’s even a whiff of the possibility of wanting to play sports

… bring the paperwork to a regular exam,” Dr. Donalty advises. That way, it will be on file when your kid’s bestie drags them along to basketball tryouts.

In the Mary Bridge Children’s system, a sports physical can be done at an urgent care clinic in a pinch. Also, if the child has been seen by their provider within the previous year, and nothing has changed with their health, Mary Bridge Children’s providers will sign off on a sports physical without an additional exam.

What a sports physical doesn’t do: Take the place of a yearly check-in with a provider who knows the child, their family and their history.

“We encourage patients to develop a relationship with their primary care provider or the provider’s team,” Dr. Donalty said, explaining that it leads to what she called “longitudinal knowledge” and a level of comfort and familiarity between doctor and patient.

This deeper knowledge means a provider can better assess the whole picture of a child’s health, which makes it easier to “find the needle in the haystack” when there’s a problem.

Mary Bridge Children’s providers pride themselves on knowing their patients and families well and acting as their “medical home” — a place to come with an acute condition, to coordinate specialty care when needed and a source of expertise in a sea of health information available online (not all of it accurate).

“Our goal in pediatrics is to have your child be as healthy as they possibly can be,” said Dr. Donalty.
