THE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE John 4:4-18; 5:24-25; 17:3 Pastor Ken Koeman 1. Nitty-gritty Christianity is

but not

but not

2. What is at the very core of Christianity?

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3: 16)

3. What exactly is eternal life? A. Most people think it is

But what we call life right now is only mere

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my bread and drinks my blood has eternal life….” (John 6: 53, 54)

B. In fact, it is an entirely different

of life. It is a whole

new of life, and to reach this level, a person

must be .

Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit (John 3: 3, 6)

C. The life we receive at our first birth is BIOS (pronounced “bee-oohs”) (existence); the life we receive at our second birth is ZOE (pronounced “zzoh-aye”) (eternal life).

“Now this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17: 3) 4

For more info, contact the Church Office

4. Why do we need eternal life?

A. Because BIOS keeps running

and needs

constant .

1) This is true .

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again….” (John 4:13)

2) This is also true .

“Jesus said to her, ‘You are right when you say you have no husband, The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband.” (John 4: 17-18) Existence (BIOS), even very comfortable existence, is still living in death because it does not fulfill our deepest need for life.

B. Because ZOE cannot be and never needs .

“…whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14) Eternal life (ZOE) sets us free from death because satisfies our deepest need for love.

5. How can a person receive eternal life (ZOE)? A. There is an that has to

.

“…everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” (Matthew 19:29)

B. There is a new that has to

.

“For my father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life….” (John 6:40)

Hurricane Relief Support Opportunity

Cadet Leaders Needed We are looking for godly men who want to make a difference in boys' lives by serving as Cadet Leaders. The men who serve as Cadets Counselors are men of God who are dedicated to bringing boys into a living relationship with their Lord and Savior. These men, understanding their imperfection, hold on to the promise that the Lord will bless their prayers, their example, and their instruction if they rely on God’s strength. If you would like to serve in this way, please contact Kevin Stratton or the Church Office.

The Deacons would like to offer each of us the opportunity to bring help and hope in Jesus' name to hurricane victims through our denomination's Disaster Response Service (DRS). Several members of our congregation have had the privilege to be on a DRS team following natural disasters in various locations. Please place your specifically marked (Hurricane) donations, checks made out to SCRC, along with your LOB offering in the collection plate on September 17 or 24. Another option is to place it in the collection box at the back of the Sanctuary. We will send the gifts to DRS in October. Thank you! Helping Those in Need The Deacons have collected the toiletry items that you've generously donated, and created colorful gift bags for those in need.

Pastor Search Team Please continue to pray for the Pastor Search Team (PST) as they work to identify our next pastor. They are engaging in conversations and interviews with potential candidates, and need God's wisdom during this process. Please contact them if you have a potential candidate in mind. Co-Chairs: Jeff Boersema / Karen Heys; with members Kendra Buist, John DeKoekkoek, Mandy Faber, Wolter Korf, Dan Kredit, Jan Vander Linden, Pete Van Dyke, and Sue Visser. 206.364.3021  office@seattlecrc.org

Please take one today to keep in your car and bless someone in Jesus' name Please continue donating items in the basket (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lotion, and health bars.) Thank you for giving generously.

Getting Connected We encourage you to get connected with a community group for fellowship and mutual support. It is far too easy to simply come to church on Sunday and then slip out. We want to get to know you better, so join us! If you would like more information about any group, please contact the Church Office.

Cadets (Boys grades 3-6) The goal of Cadeting is to help boys grow spiritually in all areas of life—devotional, mental, physical, and social. This week, the Cadets kick off their new year on Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m., meeting in Fellowship Hall downstairs. GEMS (Girls Everywhere Meeting the Savior), a club for girls in grades 3-6, resumes this week with a kick-off on Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. in various rooms at the church. Our activities include Bible lessons, praise/worship, badges, crafts and other fun things.

Sunday Afternoon Bible Study (Adults all ages) This group of adults meets once a month in various homes every third Sunday from September through May. We start our new year today, Sunday, September 17 at noon with a potluck lunch at the Holly home. We will utilize a book by Dale Larsen entitled, "Growing Older and Wiser." Men’s Bible Study The Men’s Bible Study meets most Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Room. We are focusing on the Book of Titus. All men are welcome, so please join us!

ALIVE Youth Group (JH and HS students) This year, we are combining our JH and HS students in a group called ALIVE (always living in view of eternity). We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, unless noted otherwise. Our next meeting is on Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room.

Women's Thursday AM Bible Study Join us on Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. in Rooms 201-202 as work through our study, Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver. This includes video introductions and lessons for this 12-week study. Please contact Harriet Jonkman if you need help getting the book. We invite women of all ages to join us!

Couples' Club (for Couples of All Ages) This groups meets one Saturday evening per month from October through May. We look forward to starting our new year at the Vedders' Home on Saturday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m. Call the Church Office if you would like to learn more about this group.

Women’s Monday PM Bible Study The Women's Monday Evening Bible Study meets most Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in Rooms 201-202. We are continuing in our study, Embracing God's Grace. This study is one that does not require continuity, so all women are invited to join us at any time.

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT)

Shoreline Christian Reformed Church is a gospel and grace-centered

community learning how to follow Jesus. We belong to a broader community called The Christian Reformed Church. What does this mean? We call ourselves… Christian… Because we belong to Jesus Christ and want to be his followers.

Reformed…

Church…

Because we’re part of the historic branch of the Christian church that follows the teachings of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation, who struggled to return Christianity to its biblical roots. Because God has called us to be a fellowship of his people in the world.
