Alden Mason: Tribute We encourage you to also visit the exhibition Alden Mason: Fly Your Own Thing a large retrospective exhibit of Mason’s Paintings, Drawings, and Prints at the Bellevue Arts Museum May 14 - October 10 Also, Alden Mason: Paintings , a major 200-page monograph detailing the life and work of the former UW School of Art Professor will be available in May at the Bellevue Arts Museum, in conjunction with BAM’s retrospective exhibition of Alden Mason’s work.

ORANGE BINGO, 1976, oil on canvas, 70 x 82 inches

Ray Hill Watercolors Ray Hill (1891-1980) was Alden Mason’s singular inspiration to be an artist. The pair met as Mason hitchhiked back and forth between the University of Washington and the Skagit Valley. Hill once encouraged him to take a detour to Deception Pass to make watercolors and that outing began Mason’s career. Hill was a well respected professor of art and a widely known artist with exhibitions in New York, and across the country. His clarity with watercolor is evident in the selection we have assembled here today with the help of scholar David Martin.

UNTITLED, 1960s, watercolor on paper, 18 x 24 inches

TYSON GRUMM THE STORY OF... JU NE 2 0 2 1

The Story of Nomadic Bird House Beta, acrylic on wood, 21 x 28 in.

Aptly titled “The Story of….”, Tyson Grumm’s new exhibition of 28 paintings focuses on visual storytelling. For Grumm, there is magic in making a visual story. A story with no words and no sound told in the one language that every person at any age can understand: pictures. Throughout his career and practice, Grumm has told thousands of made-up stories and there are thousands more that he has yet to tell. He spends his days living inside his head seeing fragments of what could later become a chapter in his story. These stories, when shared with others and viewed from a different lens, seemingly mutate and become the viewer’s story. This shared experience of swapping stories is an alchemy Grumm relishes. “Let me show you my latest story and let’s hear yours.”
