STORM BREWING OVER CONEY BEACH

GET £34,000 Dear Editor, TAR We want to thank everyone who has given so generously in supporting our aim to purchase and donate a second caravan to Latch - the Welsh Childrens’ Cancer Charity, at Trecco Bay. All donations can be made through Just Giving Karavan 4 The Kidz, by contact us through our Karavan 4 The Kidz Facebook page, or through the Emyr Owen branch of Latch Facebook page - where you will also find more information about Latch and a list of different fundraising events that you could get involved with. The fundraising has gone so well and, amazingly, our running total has now reached £29,000! We have decided to increase our target to £34,000 to enable us to incorporate decking around the caravan, as we believe this will be so beneficial to assist those children who may have disabilities due to the cancer or its treatment. Thank you once again for ALL your kind donations. We also wish to thank the family of Bill Hodgson for their generous donation in memory him; amazing you can think of us at your time of loss. The Cardiff Magistrates Court, Wales Support Unit, HMCTS, The Swan, Nottage for their continual support and Dougy Burgess, Mike Sims, Gary Walford and Lisa Hier for organising a hugely successful cycle from Brecon to the Greenacres, and extend that thanks to all those who took part or sponsored. On Friday 27th May at the Stage Door, Grand Pavilion we are organising a Cabaret Evening. This evening was previously a great success, featuring songs from musicals and films from professional singers with West End and international experience. It is very kindly hosted by Tim Richards and special guests. Finally, Nottage Primary School are holding their annual Promenade Run on 11th June at 1.30pm and have generously chosen Karavan4thekidz as this year’s charity. If you are a local business and would like to sponsor this event, please get in touch. Many thanks again for your amazing support, Karavan 4 the Kidz

LITTER EVERYWHERE!

PHOTO SUBMISSIONS

Dear Editor, I love where I live, nowhere can beat the lovely Welsh countryside in my opinion. We should all feel proud of the area. Why then do I keep seeing mounds of rubbish thrown on the side of the lanes in my local area. Each time I drive to Porthcawl I discover another pile of waste strewn in the ditch. What is wrong with these mindless cretins, the Tythegston Amenity Site is less than a mile away from where they have thrown the rubbish and it’s free! If I knew who the idiots were, it would give me great pleasure to dump their rubbish in their own back yards, only trouble is they probably wouldn’t even notice! Also there are others that are not taking any responsibility for their local environment. I regularly pass Cenin Limited going into Porthcawl and outside their gate are again, piles of plastic and tyres etc. They have just erected an enormous wind turbine which I see everyday up close from my living room window. The very least this huge company could do is to ensure the local lane is kept free of litter and maintain the upkeep of the local area. Catherine Bruce Stormy Down

ONE DEER, TWO BABY MALE ADDERS Dear Editor, While out on our trek high up on the ridge above Sand dune trails, we stopped to take in the view. Suddenly we saw a deer crossing a path from a bush, which we see often in this area. On looking where the deer came from we saw two baby male adders basking in the sun. A truly amazing sight, as adders are very elusive, really stunning colours. And refreshing to see adders can flourish in isolation within this area of natural beauty/ scientific research where the flora and fauna are unique to this area. SAMTAMPA TRADEGY – WE WANT YOUR STORY

Dear Editor, On the 23rd April, 2017, Porthcawl commemorated the 70th Anniversary of the Sampampa tragedy which occurred on Sker rocks in 1947. The Samtampa Memorial Committee, part of the Porthcawl Shout Forum, is looking to perpetuate that memory in many ways. It’s hoped one of these will be a Resource Pack for teachers, so that our young people may be aware of the way ordinary folk responded to the disaster and the sacrifice of the Mumbles Lifeboat crew. You may have your own memories of the tragedy, or remember incidents told by family and friends. Today’s generation would benefit from hearing the thoughts and feelings of people who were their age that fateful night. Your memories are vital in bringing history to life: is nothing more telling than a personal story! If you would like your memories to be included in the Resource Pack please email them to jeanmarg@fastmail.co.uk Jean Humphreys On behalf of the Samtampa Memorial Committee

MY HUSBAND – A Tribute to Craig (Evs) Evans It’s so hard to express in words just how much Craig meant to me. I’m so lucky that he loved me and am so very grateful for the wonderful life that we forged together. To be taken away from us so suddenly has shocked us all to the core. We hardly had time to digest how ill Craig had become then devastatingly his battle was lost. Even during the blur of the hospital tests and revelations Craig remained remarkably calm and dignified. My husband is a hero. My heart is broken since I lost him but at least I have amazing memories – the beautiful years we spent together, our crazy adventures, the difficulties we overcame as a team and most importantly - our constant happiness in each other’s company. Always cwtching or holding hands, laughing until we couldn’t breathe or enjoying our favourite past time - simple walks with our little dog Floyd; appreciating the beauty of nature and the world together. Craig would agree that we are extremely blessed to have such beautiful, strong and clever girls in Natasha and Lauren. The three of us girls will carry Craig’s spirit in our hearts forever. I miss Craig so much, his terrible jokes, his passion for the outdoors and the sea, his kitchen dancing, the way he looked at me, his beaming smile and holding his hand wherever we went. The time we spent together was... perfect. Craig was a loving husband - loyal, handsome, funny and kind. He was the best thing that ever happened to me - my best friend, my other half. He was, as I always told him “My Favourite”. My husband Craig will never, ever be forgotten and I’ll never stop loving him. Jemma Evans x Seaside News | 14

THANK YOU FROM JEMMA Jemma would like people to know how grateful she is for the overwhelmingly kind messages of support and love that her family has received. Jemma said, “I couldn’t believe the minute silence in Ford and the generous collection from his colleagues. Ford is also financing his bench on Sker for me, which will be situated looking out at his favourite surf break. That’s going to be a really important place for me, Tash & Lauren. His brother Ross and the RNLI will organise his scattering of ashes out at sea there too. So much love and kindness, I wish he knew. I miss him so much - it’s honestly an hourly struggle just to keep going but I’m so very, very proud of him x”.

RIP EVS I would like to dedicate this issue to you - Craig Evans - or ‘Evs’ as we all called you. We shared many a surf over the years, especially over Sker and particularly going back quite a few years or so. Taken way too young. Everyone will miss your infectious smile and cheery demeanor. SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL Four Year 12 pupils visited Auschwitz recently and unsurprisingly, the trip made an enormous impression on them. Caitlin Whiteley shares her thoughts below:There is no preparation for something like Auschwitz, the sheer immense grief. In Auschwitz I, the political camp, it was about what you saw, almost perfectly preserved and horrifying as the restaurants and cinemas of Oswiecem rose up around it. In Auschwitz II Birkenau, where the Jewish and Roma Sinti were kept and murdered in massive amounts, it was about what you didn’t see. The remains of a huge crematoria smouldered and a haunting museum of photographs and possessions of those exterminated hulked underneath an icy polish sky. We walked in a daze as our tour guide threw statistic after horrifying statistic at us. How could this have happened? As the night darkened and the temperature froze we stood shivering. In the dark Birkenau was huge, indomitable, the only colour the black of the sky and the yellow glow of the candles we lit on the memorial. A rabbi sang a Hebrew prayer of mourning as we stared at the expanse of death. For a few days after the experience, normal conversation seemed futile. All I wanted to talk about was what I had seen yet how do you find the words for the sheer monstrosity? But I see now words are the way forward, words are what we need to spread warning of the consequences of ignorance and hatred. Auschwitz was the bleakest point of humanity, the culmination of scapegoating and racism and fear of the different. Auschwitz cannot be repeated, the Holocaust cannot be repeated, and it is our duty to stop that from happening. The History Department at PCS has entered the National Heritage Award Project Competition again this year. A team of students has been working on the theme of “Voices from World War One”. The focus of their research has been on six individuals from Porthcawl and their role in the war. This has involved producing a teaching pack to deliver to pupils in local primary schools; a PowerPoint presentation, booklet production, a role play and a puppet show. Judges will be coming to the school very soon to look at the work for themselves and we are indebted to Porthcawl Museum as well as the Glamorgan Archives for giving us the opportunity to research the information they had on offer to complete the project. AFON Y FELIN NEWS Congratulations to Charlie Murphy who won The Chair at our Eisteddfod. His Welsh poem about a party was judged to be the best of all the excellent poems submitted. All the entries of art, handwriting, songs, poetry and dance were of a very high standard, making judging very difficult. Thank you to Sofia Chayka and Rhianna Knowles for representing Afon y Felin at Pyle Library, they were competing in the Cluster School Championship. They both received a goodie bag. Congratulations to Cerys Pritchard, Ellis Pride, Adam Clatworthy and Ben Smalldon. They represented our school at the County Road Safety Quiz. They were placed second in the cluster and seventh overall! We celebrated World Book Day on the third, with children and staff dressing up as book characters, it was lovely to see all the children joining in with some vey imaginative costumes! The Oaks played host to a very special visitor recently - Alfie! Gareth Thomas dropped in to talk to the children and answered questions. He even agreed to having his photograph taken with each child! Thank you to him for taking the time to spend it with us, we had some very excited pupils! AJ Pritchard - Parent Governor

Be sure to bring some pennies, as both stalls will have lovely items for sale. We will have delicious food on offer, soft drinks and our ever popular cake stall. This year we have singing princesses Elsa and Anna visiting, so we are expecting one big sing-a-long from everyone. There will be soft play for the little ones and a bouncy castle/ slide for the more confident. Craft, face painting, treasure hunt and outside play will all make this a fun-filled few hours. If you are interested in a nursery place, our fantastic staff and manager, will be here to help you with any information or questions. We hope to see families old and new. Julie and Kim

NOTTAGE PRIMARY NEWS The children have begun the final term of the academic year, which always proves to be a very busy time for all. Year 5 went on their annual residential PGL trip to Tregoyd House in the Brecon Beacons. The children savoured three exciting days of adventure and returned with stories to dine out on for the rest of their lives. The staff returned home bleary eyed and exhausted. Once again, Year 6 are looking forward to their annual week in Belgium which takes place in June. The trip includes excursions to the WW1 Cemeteries, the Menin Gate, Bellewaerde Park and a chocolate factory shop. Yum! The PTA continues to fund a host of projects and improvements in school including a new outdoor learning resource for the Reception Unit. They also ran discos before the Easter break, which were a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Our annual, sponsored ‘Promenade Run’ will take place on Friday 10th June at 1.30pm. This year we are supporting ‘Karavan 4 the Kidz’ which was initiated by a handful of local residents. The project is managed by LATCH and based in Park Dean’s Trecco Bay. Kerry Townley

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS

Cefn Cribwr Primary School is trying to raise £10,000 to renovate an old school building into a soft sensory play area. This facility will give the special needs pupils a safe place for recreational development and will be a vital space to develop many skills that they are yet to experience. Hopefully it will also offer sound and light pods. All the pupils have global delay problems where they suffer across the board in every area of development and learning. Some pupils are autistic, visually impaired and one pupil is suffering from Leukaemia. Gareth Williams was an ex-pupil of Cefn Cribwr Primary School 27 years ago where he attended the Observation Unit at the age of five. £1000 has been donated by Mr Gareth Williams and Mr Tony Williams of Camplas Technology. The generosity is very much appreciated by everyone at the school. A big thank you also to the following for their generosity: Nolan Recycling - £500, Cefn Cribwr RFC Grunters - £350, Amberwell Engineering – £200, Project Tile and Bathrooms - £100, Pisgah Chapel £100, Maid of Sker Lodge - £100, The Farmers Arms Seaside News | 18

Summer term is here and along with the sunshine we have many exciting activities planned at Porthcawl Primary! After all the planning we finally have our rocket seeds from the International Space Station. We have planted them along with some seeds that have stayed on planet Earth and over the next month we will be measuring both to see what impact going up to space has had on the seeds. As a community we have also been riding our bikes and scooting into school as part of the ‘Bike It’ challenge. Last year we were one of the most successful schools in Wales so we have a lot to live up to this year! Hopefully we can get even more people cycling into school every day. We also have a trip to the Principality Stadium to watch the Bridgend District team play in the final of the DC Thomas cup. We will be going along to cheer on Stefan Yardley who will be following in the footsteps of numerous Welsh rugby greats and playing on the famous pitch. Good luck Stefan and the rest of the Bridgend District team! Andrew Wood Head Teacher

SCHOOLS GOLDEN JUBILEE CONCERT

Recently, I discovered in my office a rather battered book with a brass clasp that looked like it belonged on the set of a Harry Potter film. This book is in fact an important historical document as it is the original log book containing entries made by the first Head Teacher, and gives a fascinating insight into the early years of the school’s existence. It states that the school opened on 1st September 1965 and at that time there were 12 staff and 206 pupils with the school day being 20 minutes longer!! How things have changed. There are now over 800 pupils and around 100 members of staff. The Golden Jubilee Concert on Saturday 19th March showcased the talents of our pupils past and present. An orchestra of 120 musicians included staff, parents and past pupils. There were a number of solo performances from past pupils who have gone on to pursue professional careers in the music world and oustanding performances from our younger soloists. The school is incredibly proud of all who participated and I would like to extend my thanks to those who attended this truly memorable night. Angela Keller Head Teacher/Pennaeth ArchBishop McGrath

PREPARING FOR SUMMER SUCCESS! As the summer term quickly approaches Cynffig’s students, staff and parents are making final preparations for external exams. After-school support sessions, our Easter revision programme, as well as parent workshops led by our learning coach ensure that every member of our learning community feels supported at this crucial time. This April our female students will attend the ‘Keeping it Equal’ careers event at the Celtic Manor Hotel to encourage girls to consider non-traditional jobs and career paths. Our girls will enjoy a hands on experience of a wide range of careers as well as presentations from inspiring female role models. Cynffig pupils and staff travelled to Disneyland Paris to participate in Disney’s annual St David’s Day celebrations. Students spent two days in the park experiencing the thrilling rides and parades of Disney, as well as fantastic Welsh themed firework displays. Our annual Eisteddfod concert once again presented a range of fantastic talents including the finalists from our Primary Partner Competition. Over 30 winners and their parents were invited to the concert to collect their prizes for their Cymru themed entries. Thank you to all who attended, a thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all. STAGECOACH THEATRE ARTS

WEST PARK PRIMARY Easter has come and gone and the year is flying by. Nursery and Reception visited Cardiff Castle, met a real knight, a dragon and made goblets for a Medieval Banquet! We built castles and did role plays in them. Year 3/4 have been looking at the woodland, making a bug house and been finding out which bugs are popular in our woodland. We have been comparing plants and animals. Year 5/6 have been studying our coastline. On a beach adventure, we carried out a survey of litter, investigated our findings and the effect on our environment. We studied beach erosion and how our coastline has changed. We celebrated St David’s Day and Sport Relief. We all had great fun on these days, with singing, role play, reciting and lots of creative activities. Sport Relief allowed us all to participate in sporting activities of many kinds. As the season ends, the rugby teams have remained unbeaten this term and have only lost one game. Fantastic. The netball team attended tournaments where they have done extremely well and progress to the next round representing Bridgend. Cross Country continues and the team members are forever improving, showing great effort and commitment. Good luck! Year 5 pupils Seaside News | 20

TECHNOLOGY Q. Hi,

I’ve seen a lot of Amazon Firesticks and Google TV boxes available on the internet which use your internet connection to deliver a wide range of content, can you advise which one is best? Jenson, Pencoed.

A.

Hi Jenson, These devices are freely available and cost next to nothing on sites like ebay and whilst they are illegal in many respects, owning one and using it doesn’t seem to cause any trouble apart from the likes of Sky/BT Sport who are losing money hand over fist in terms of lost subscription payments from customers. Some may see this as a win since they have been making money for many years from their millions of subscription paying customers, but I understand why people are resorting to using these devices. For as little as £30 on ebay, you can by a MXQ box which will quite happily deliver content to your TV via a HDMI lead and a decent internet connection. The Amazon Firestick (hacked) will also do the same job for £60 and delivers pretty much the same content but the hardware is a bit more powerful. Whilst you will be able to watch the latest movies and the 3pm Saturday afternoon Premiership football matches, the quality of the picture is something some might not accept when viewing through a large TV screen, which are found in most homes these days. If you were using a smaller screen then maybe the quality would be acceptable. Also, although these devices seem to be working and delivery content without any issues, there will come a time when Sky/BT and Film Companies will be able close down the loopholes which are currently being exploited to deliver the programs to these devices. If you don’t mind the lack of a 1080p picture and the odd break in the program whilst the devices buffers (this happens a lot in football matches) then I would say the Amazon Firestick is the best I’ve seen to date. David, Westprime

Q.

I’m thinking about upgrading my memory on my PC but I’m unsure by how much and what memory chips to purchase. My PC is used for mainly photo editing, spreadsheets and occasionally gaming. Can you advise how best to proceed? I currently have 4GB of memory. Thanks, Alun from Porthcawl

A.

Hi Alun, Memory has come down in cost over the years to a point whereby I always fit in as much memory as the PC will allow. There are many types of memory, which have different characteristics, but the main driver is size. Memory generally comes in either 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB modules (higher available for servers but that’s a different story altogether). Which memory can be used in your PC is governed by the motherboard and what memory you currently have installed into your PC. Usually PC’s have between either 2 or 4 slots available for memory. The easiest way to work out what memory modules you currently have in your computer without pulling the PC apart (this also works for laptops) is by using the following online tool. http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/systemscanner Seaside News | 22

email: david@westprime.co.uk with your questions

This will download a safe application to your PC and carry out a scan after which the computer will display how many memory slots you have free, what is currently in the memory slots and what options are available for you to upgrade. Using this tool will ensure you get the correct memory for your PC and avoid any compatibility issues. Once the scan has completed, you will be shown the exact memory configuration which is available to you and you will also be offered the option to buy the memory modules direct from the website. I have always purchased memory from Crucial for peace of mind and they are very good on price. If you proceed with the order, the memory is generally delivered next day and then it’s time to install the memory into your computer. If you open up your PC, you should be able to locate the current memory installed by looking at the memory that has just been delivered. Remove one of the memory modules from the packaging and ensure you earth yourself against the chassis of the PC (i.e., before picking up the new memory module from the packaging, ensure one hand is holding onto your PC chassis BEFORE handling the new memory module itself – this ensures no static is discharged into the new memory chip). Once you have the memory module in your hand, you can now start looking for an identical chip inside the PC, once you locate the memory, you should be able to see the spare memory slots next to the existing memory module already installed into the PC. Make sure you insert the memory the correct way, gold pins facing down and safety lug facing the correct way. When you insert the memory, you will need to push it quite hard into the slot until it clicks. There are two catches at both ends of the memory module that will clip into place. If the catches are not locking correctly, you have probably got the memory module round the wrong way. Once installed and you have put the PC back together, you can check your memory is installed properly by going to the ‘System’ option within the control panel. Good luck! David, Westprime

News COASTWATCH VOLUNTEERS HANDED KEYS TO OLD PILOT LOOKOUT TOWER Porthcawl’s coastline is set to become even safer with the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) starting weekend watches from the Old Pilot Lookout Tower this summer. Coastwatch volunteers were handed the keys to the iconic building last month, after its transfer from Bridgend County Borough Council was confirmed. The trained NCI volunteers will be manning the tower – initially on weekends only – to help spot danger both offshore and onshore so that amateur sailors and fishermen can stay safe. Heritage Lottery Funding, together with contributions from BCBC, Cadw and the NCI has helped to restore the grade II listed building to its former glory through the Porthcawl Townscape Heritage Initiative. Originally built around 150 years ago, the Old Pilot Lookout Tower has been given replacement windows, doors and roofing, while the external staircase has also been renewed. Not only did we want to restore this historic waterfront building, but we wanted to bring it back into use, so I’m delighted that we have now handed it over to the National Coastwatch volunteers. The restoration of the Old Pilot Lookout Tower complements the exciting work planned for the nearby Jennings Building and Customs House, and is another important step in Porthcawl’s overall regeneration. COUNCIL TEAMS UP WITH RNLI FOR BEACH LIFEGUARD SERVICE Have you been lucky enough to snap up one of the best jobs in Porthcawl this summer? Four of Porthcawl’s beaches are set to be patrolled by a new seasonal lifeguard service run in partnership by Bridgend County Borough Council and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), and applications have been taken for lifeguards. For many years, the council has provided lifeguards at Coney Beach, Rest Bay, Trecco Bay and Pink Bay, creating a safe environment so that local residents and tourists can enjoy the beaches and coastline. Now that same high standard of service is set to continue through the new partnership. RNLI lifeguards will provide a daily safety service on Coney Beach and Trecco Bay from 30th April. At Rest Bay, lifeguards will begin duty on 28th May and at Pink Bay from 2nd July. Lifeguards will be on duty seven days a week between 10am and 6pm at Coney Beach, Rest Bay and Pink Bay until 4th September, and at Trecco Bay until 25th September. The RNLI have been recruiting an enthusiastic and professional team of lifeguards to support this, and they are interested in hearing from volunteers, too. TIME FOR TOURISM FRESH START Tourism plays a major part in the economy of Porthcawl and injects £5 billion into the Welsh economy – equivalent to a third of the entire Welsh Government spending budget. So its future, and the thousands of jobs depending on it, is of crucial importance. That’s why it’s important to ensure that the next Welsh Government starts treating tourism operators as the major players that they are. I launched the Welsh Conservatives’ strategy, which calls for Visit Wales to be scrapped. This was the body set up by Welsh Labour to replace the Wales Tourist Board. It sits within government and is run by civil servants. But visits to Wales by British residents have fallen by a fifth. Key opportunities like the London Olympics, wildlife tourism, and film and TV related tourism have been missed. And money has been wasted on incomprehensible TV commercials, which are an embarrassment. Tourism needs to be freed from the shackles of bureaucracy and the safety first approach always favoured by civil servants and be run by a new body free of government interference with input from the people who know most – tourism operators. HARBOURSIDE NEWS Earlier this month, we submitted plans and held a pre-planning meeting with BCBC planners. Stuart has worked hard to manage important design modifications that meet the complex planning requirements for the site, while at the same time ensuring that we stay within our budget. Our proposals were well received and full planning will be submitted by the end of April. We are now at an advanced stage with our portfolio of funders all of whom fully understand and support our ambitions, and we are working through their various requirements. We are very keen to ensure that the history of Cosy Corner is reflected in and around the Maritime Centre, and here we need readers’ help. Do you have any pictures of Cosy Corner from the time when the cinema and skating rink were still there? Porthcawl Sea Cadets, celebrating 70 years, was founded in Cosy Corner, in a wooden hut, ‘TS Seaflower’ before moving to their current base when the hut blew down All Roofs Power in a storm. KAG GLASS SPLASHBACKS

SECURING REAL CHANGE It simply isn’t healthy for one party to remain in government for 17 years. For evidence, one needs to look no further than Labour’s catastrophic failure to protect our Welsh NHS. As waiting lists soar to double those in other parts of the UK and patients are routinely denied vital treatments, all Labour will do is point the finger. Plaid Cymru are talking tough at the moment about Labour’s many failings - but will once again prove to be a party that is up for sale. Their asking price is power and voters should be under no illusion otherwise. Vote Plaid, get Labour. The only real alternative comes from the Welsh Conservatives, who have consistently refused to accept cuts to the health budget from Labour. Plaid and the Liberal Democrats have both done deals to get Labour’s budgets through. Both are now tarred with Labour’s brush having kept them in office. Dr Altaf Hussain Welsh Conservative

The recent saga of the ‘selfie bench’ made national and even international news and generated some great publicity for Porthcawl’s picturesque coastline. What a pity, though, that none of the news footage or media photographs taken at the selfie bench managed to inform people that additional seats are already located directly in front of it, and that they most definitely face the sea! Including this fact would have resulted in a very different story indeed… Elsewhere, it’s great to see that work has started on creating a new route that can be shared by cyclists and pedestrians along Porthcawl’s seafront. Once complete, people will be able to use it to travel between Rest Bay and Sandy Bay. As part of the work, the footway is being widened and new kerbs, signage, drainage and surfacing is being installed to make the seafront even more visitor-friendly. The route will use the lower promenade between the Seabank Hotel and the RNLI Station before passing the marina and following the Eastern Promenade. It will link in with other developments such as the ongoing Porthcawl Townscape Heritage Initiative, work to bring the Jennings Building back into public use and the community-driven Harbourside project. News PROTECTING YOUR CHILD ONLINE All parents fear something happening to their child, it is the eternal terror of stranger danger. For the present generation of parents the fear is no longer the stranger in the street but the invisible stranger entering unknown into their child’s bedroom via the Internet. The accessibility of the tablet and smartphone paired with the advent of social media makes protecting your child online extremely difficult. A new and quite terrifying statistic has revealed that 93% of those arrested for online grooming had not previously been known to child protection services. With this in mind the police and social services have a duty to create new ways of combating child exploitation online. There is now a powerful tool to help protect our children and for children to learn how to protect themselves - www.thinkuknow. co.uk gives advice and guidance on recognising and reporting online abuse. The service also provides access to confidential contact with a social worker to help children or parents who are unsure if what they are experiencing is abuse. With over 400 calls a month the service is increasing its skills and protection of our children. It is important that as parents we are aware of the dangers of online abuse and that we teach our children how to be as safe as possible when using the internet. TATA STEEL There will be no let up in our efforts to secure a future for steel making in Wales. I have spoken to many people in my area who work at the Port Talbot plant who are extremely worried about their jobs. I have met with the Prime Minister and other cabinet ministers to discuss the crisis and have stressed that if necessary, the UK Government should consider taking over Tata’s assets in the short term to enable a sale process to take place. I have also spoken directly with Tata Steel. I was pleased to see that in a meeting with the Business Secretary, Tata Steel have echoed the reassurances they gave to me about their responsibilities as a seller. We know there are potential buyers out there. I have also stressed that we as a Welsh Government, are prepared to contribute from Welsh Government resources to help secure a long- term solution and to do all we can to assist prospective buyers. My message to the steelworkers and their families and to the communities that have grown up around these sites is, we stand beside you shoulder to shoulder. Welsh steel – British steel – cannot be allowed to die. Carwyn Jones Welsh Labour Leader

PORTHCAWL SHOUT ‘SERPENT SEATS’ BECOME NOTORIOUS ‘SELFIE SEATS’ It has been quite unbelievable to note the National coverage that the two new seats positioned opposite the Seabank Hotel have received. The Press (including media and wide National press coverage) have drawn attention to the seats facing the Seabank, not out to sea. Your readers may already appreciate that the seats in question are in fact a modern replica of the Serpent benches, which BCBC lost two years ago. Readers may also recall that Gary Victor, Chairman of Porthcawl SHOUT, originally found a Serpent Bench in the grounds of the Rest Home, and we soon discovered a similar bench in a bad state of repair near the Ocean View Flats. Porthcawl SHOUT were tireless in pressing BCBC to renovate the unusual antique seats and to reposition them in a prominent position in our Town. After nearly two years and an admission that the originals had been lost from their storage yard in Bridgend a compromise was reached and new Serpent like seats were eventually acquired. We agreed with BCBC the present location but as Gary Victor has already confirmed, no way did we suggest the seats should face away from the sea. We applaud Bridgend Tourist Board for suggesting the ‘Selfie Seat’, as this has resulted in such major publicity for the town of Porthcawl. Clive Mort

TIME FOR CHANGE IN BRIDGEND & PORTHCAWL The Welsh Assembly election is on Thursday, 5th May. I hope that all of you will take part and cast your vote. As we saw in the 2015 General Election, in marginal seats like Bridgend & Porthcawl, every single vote matters. I am standing as a candidate because I believe that my background in engineering and investment equips me with the skills needed to deal with the challenges we face. I am also very passionate about standing up for local people in Bridgend and Porthcawl. I am very excited about this election and extremely proud of the campaign we ran. We championed the issues that thousands of people raised with us, including campaigning to save Bridgend town centre, regenerate Porthcawl, support the individuals and families affected by the steel crisis, reduce NHS waiting times in our area and improve education standards in the schools that are falling behind in Bridgend. I hope to win the election to make a tangible difference and to continue serving our community. Only by voting Welsh Conservative can we achieve real change for Wales, delivering the competent government Wales desperately needs so that we don’t get left behind.

News HALVING SEVERN BRIDGE TOLLS IN 2018 DOES NOT GO FAR ENOUGH Plans by the UK Government to halve the Severn Bridge tolls when the bridges come back into public ownership are very welcome, but do not go far enough. I believe that the tolls should be scrapped altogether once the bridges are transferred back to government control. Having a tax on entry into Wales is hitting local businesses and undermining our economic growth. A Welsh Government report found that scrapping the Severn Bridge tolls would boost the South Wales economy by around £107 million a year. That is a saving for the average commuter of around £1,536 a year. The direct toll costs imposed on businesses are estimated to be £47 million (excluding VAT in 2009 prices), with £34 million (including VAT) paid by consumers. There are no toll roads or toll bridges in Northern Ireland and there have been no toll bridges in Scotland since 2008. The cost of maintaining their bridges comes from the public purse in the same way as the rest of the UK road network. It is only right that Wales has the same benefit for our major artery into South Wales and I call on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to go the extra mile and abolish the tolls altogether from 2018.

NO MORE BED CLOSURES During the past decade, the Welsh Labour Government has closed a fifth of all hospital beds in Wales. As a result, we have a massive shortage of beds, which is at the heart of many problems with the Welsh NHS. Elective operations are repeatedly cancelled because no bed is available for the patient after surgery. Just weeks ago, all nonemergency surgery was cancelled at local hospitals because beds were full of elderly patients needing hospitalisation. The equivalent of one in seven people in Wales is now on an NHS waiting list. Another consequence is long delays at A&E departments because they are full of people who need to be admitted but for whom there are no beds. Meanwhile, outside our hospitals, including The Princess of Wales, convoys of ambulances - sometimes as many as 15 at a time – wait with patients on board because there is no room for them inside. Is it any wonder we have the worst ambulance response times in the UK when they are off-line for hours at a time stuck outside hospitals. Enough is enough. Welsh Conservatives are calling for an end to bed and hospital closures. And for some beds to be put back wherever possible. SUZY DAVIES Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

FEATURES BRIDGEND ROTARY CLUB RAMBLE

A slightly overcast morning at 11:00 soon gave way to a really sunny day for the walk, which started at 11:15 from the Jolly Sailor pub in Newton. The route was down Beach Road, past St John’s Well, on to the slipway on Newton Beach and thereafter a long walk over sand, pebbles and some rock towards the Ogmore River. President Alan Reeks led into a strong easterly breeze, followed by Rotarians Edward Jones, Brian Roberts, Edgar Burt, Gwyn Thomas, John Ward, Phil Davies and Hopkin Joseph. A trio remained ‘on guard’ halfway along the beach, sitting on a rather large log, while the others in the party made it to the Ogmore River. The return journey was initially back over the sand but then a diversion inland (a possible short cut, but it seemed to take longer) took the walkers to the former rifle range below Happy Valley, with the return from there (with little wind in the dunes so a much higher temperature) past some of the Newton Burrows houses to Beach Road. The sight of the Jolly Sailor was welcome, as was, once inside just after 1:15, a drink and some food. Major (Retd) Wayne B Morgan MBE Mobile: 07789 713430

RUSSIAN SATELLITE TO BE BRIGHTEST ‘STAR’ The night sky may soon be lit by another man-made ‘star’. A team of Russian engineers has reached its fund-raising goals for sending up a satellite that will be so reflective that it will become the brightest object in the night sky, other than the Moon. The satellite will have no other purpose than to glow like a very bright star. While it is sure to be the highlight of romantic late night trysts the world over, the project has also attracted its share of ire from the scientific community. The gleaming spacecraft could be so bright that it will pollute the night sky, thus making astronomical observations more difficult. The additional light in the sky could have other unforeseen ecological effects as well. Nearly $20,000 was raised on the crowd-funding site Boomstarter to send the so-called ‘Mayak’ (which translates to ‘beacon’ in English) satellite into orbit. The tiny space capsule is no larger than a loaf of bread, but once it reaches its desired altitude it will unfurl an impressive pyramid-shaped reflector. The satellite is due to be launched in mid-2016 but is unlikely to last for more than several weeks. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH I am father to a four-year old daughter, and so dinnertime is always something of a crazy circus. For instance, why is it that a dropped piece of toast never lands butter side up? And who needs face painting when there is Spaghetti Bolognese? Also, adult conversations are so often left suspended in mid-air. After one such performance I found myself less than amused, so I decided to get a precious moment of quiet by leaving the table in order to fill the dishwasher. When I looked back, I saw the following scene. My wife was leaning forward, her eyes with a sparkle that was only slightly subdued by the fatigue of motherhood. Our daughter was throwing her hands in the air and screaming with laughter about something that had obviously tickled her. It was the same raucous circus, but I could no longer feel annoyed. Instead, I felt embraced by the scene. It was something of a revelation. I felt able to see my life and those I love with what the Apostle Paul called “the eyes of the heart enlightened.” God Bless. TOWN COUNCIL PRESENTS DEFIBRILLATOR Bridgend Town Council has supplied the funding for defibrillator equipment to be housed in the Information Office at Bridgend Bus Station and will be operational by the weekend for anyone to access who may need it. Only 3% of people who suffer a sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospital survive the situation. Not all deaths are preventable but some of them could be thanks to defibrillators in public places. Cllr. David Unwin, Finance Chairman, presented the equipment to Tony Bradshaw, the Bus Station Manager, who confirmed that all his staff were trained in the use of the equipment. He commented that with the Bus Station generally open from 7am to 8pm, it was clearly a central place to house the equipment and thanked the staff for taking on the custody. Many of us have our own special memories of Porthcawl in Summer. Those of you who remember the 1930’s will, I’m sure, talk of boating and swimming in Salt Lake. Taking a ride on the Miniature Train, which had opened in 1935 to commemorate the Jubilee of King George V, was a joy that many experienced. It is estimated that in the 30’s, 70,000 tourists visited Porthcawl by train. It is known that those who ran B&B’s we’re fully booked well in advance of the season. There are stories of people turning up late at night desperate for accommodation, being told that there was only the floor left; with breakfast. “We’ll take it,” was many a reply. Some recall a time when, as children, they could walk through the fields of Nottage to Rest Bay, before the housing was built in the 70’s. Apparently, before the Second World War one holiday job was potato picking on those very fields. A time before the caravans moved in en masse, those who lived in Newton mention the high sand dunes and beach as their playground. Miners’ fortnight proved an exceptionally busy time in the town, particularly around the bowling greens of Griffin Park, whereas, donkey rides and the fairground have become synonymous with Porthcawl Summers. Re-visit your summer memories at the ‘Beside the Sea’ Exhibition at the Museum. Judith Shawe

FEATURES PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS Mr. George Jabbour, our speaker, attended our April meeting which began with a very enjoyable meal at the Grove Golf Club. Invitations have been sent to other Inner Wheel Clubs to attend our Fashion Show Inter-Club on 25th May. President Mary Emment-Lewis is our delegate to the Inner Wheel Conference in Glasgow in April. The Inner Wheel Coffee Morning was held in Trinity Church Hall on 15th April. In the introduction to his talk on Christianity in Syria George Jabbour expressed concern about the problems in the Middle East and the rise of the Islamic State. George grew up in Damascus where most of the residents were Muslim and 10% were Christians. His parents are Christians and still live in Damascus. People of both religions used to live there quite peacefully. The Christian School attended by George attracted Moslem pupils too. In class boys and girls sat next to each other. The main language was Arabic but French was also spoken. He recited the Lord’s Prayer in Arabic for us to hear how it sounded. George won a scholarship to study engineering at Imperial College, London. He became a British citizen in 2011. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent

CAP is passionate about releasing people from a life sentence of debt and poverty. Pat, a close friend of Bonny’s, fell into debt after a series of close family deaths led to acute depression. Unable to work, she took out loans to pay her rent and council tax but soon became overwhelmed by suffocating debt, leading to a downward spiral of worry about providing for her children. While visiting a local life centre, she saw a CAP leaflet and, in desperation, rang the 0800 number. Within 2 days the CAP advisors visited her providing advice, encouragement and support and within six months Pat became debt free. Now, excited about a future with her family, she is on a training programme with a guaranteed job. Pat is passionate about telling everyone how her life has changed since she took that first step making contact with CAP. If you are struggling with debt and would like free help and advice to become debt free, call Christians Against Poverty on 0800 3280006 Lydia Davies

PYLE COMMUNITY COUNCIL FUN DAY

Five years ago Pyle Community Council resurrected the old Carnival Day as a Community Fun Day. The idea being to provide a platform for local organisations to show what they do and maybe raise some much needed funds as well. It is now one of the largest Community Fun-days in the Borough and is the highlight of a Festival Week, which commences on Saturday 11th June through to Sunday 19th June. The opening weekend of this year’s Festival Week features a ‘Gala Youth Concert’ in Pisgah Chapel on Saturday 11th and a ‘Festival Songs of Praise’ in St James’ Church Pyle on Sunday 12th. The final weekend stages the Fun-day on Saturday 18th and a ‘Community Thanksgiving Service’ in St Theodore’s Church, Kenfig Hill on Sunday 19th. During the week there are two or three events each day. In honour of the Welsh team who have qualified, the theme of year’s Fun –day is the UEFA Euros 2016 football finals being held in France, so join in the fun and wear your Welsh shirts or be a little more adventurous and wear something French or at least wear either red or blue. Don’t forget entry to the Fun-day is FREE. Harold Phillips

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI

SKER WI – MERCY SHIPS

April 1st 2016 and we were in the Talbot Centre for our monthly meeting. 26 members present, including four visitors. Minutes read out by Enid and signed off by Marjorie. Our next monthly meeting is on the 3rd May, as is our AGM. Federation AGM is on our normal 2nd Tuesday of the month. So we are having our meeting one week earlier as several members are attending the Federation AGM. Marjorie has organised Skittles for our May meeting, look out we will be laughing our socks off as we try to win. Marjorie and Maureen are organising a cheese and wine evening in June to raise funds for our friends of Mynydd Cynffig WI. All correspondence over we welcomed our speaker and his associates who were from Something Special, Bryncae Farm, Llanharan. They specialise in cheeses of many types, organising parties, teas, and demonstrations. The cheeses were amazing and we all sampled their products. No speaker next month. In June we are having a talk with slides on Cardiff given by Rosemary Sadden . Our craft, scrabble and walking groups are up and running, and the meeting finished with tea and biscuits and cheese. Christine Callaghan

Vice-President Eunice Howell welcomed 39 members to the meeting. This month’s speaker, Mrs Sheila Pugh, gave a presentation on the Mercy Ships. Sheila and her husband became advocates and fundraisers for the organisation after becoming interested in their valuable work with the world’s poorest people. Sheila and Elfed are volunteers and donate all fees to Mercy Ships. Mercy Ships was founded in 1978. Since then, they have worked with 70 different countries. Using converted liners and ferries, they provide communities with training in healthcare, and selfsufficiency as well as developing community projects. Most importantly, they provide life changing medical treatment. Their ship, ‘Africa Mercy’, is now in Madagascar. The entire ship’s company, including medical staff, is made up of volunteers. It currently costs £3,000 a day to keep the ship afloat and Mercy Ships is entirely dependent on donations of money, time and equipment to keep going. Heather Jenkins gave the vote of thanks on behalf of Sker WI. A collection on the night raised £105. Find out more at www.mercyships.org Come along and say hello 7pm, second Thursday of the month, St Davids Church Hall Nottage! Christine Beynon

LALESTON WI Our 7th April meeting was taken by Secretary Diane Marshall who welcomed everyone, including two guests. The minutes of our previous meeting were read and agreed. Everyone sent their best wishes for a speedy recovery to Vice President Barbara Rees. News that President Margaret Aylen continues to improve was welcomed. Diane introduced our speaker, Andrew Evans from the Western Beacons Mountain Search and Rescue. Along with his colleague Mike, their interesting presentation gave us an insight into the world-class service given by a group of highly trained volunteers. They deserve all our support. A vote of thanks was given by Gwyneth Jenkins. Members were looking forward to our visit to Llanelli House on 4th May. A number of members will be attending the GFWI Annual Council Meeting on 10th May. The raffle was won by Pat Gulwell. Our luncheon club met at The Pheasant, Pen-y-fai. The monthly book club was held at Bridgend Library. Our next meeting will be held on 5th May at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). Along with the business of our Annual Meeting we will be having a ‘Bring and Buy’. New members always welcome. For further information call Diane on 01656 656600. Dawn Storie

NEWTON WI On the 6th April our president Pearl Mason welcomed all members and visitors to our meeting. Quite a few of our members were sick this month, we wish them a speedy recovery. This month’s speaker was Allan Jones, who gave us a very entertaining talk on ‘Wenglish’ (a mixture of Welsh and English), lots of iconic words we were familiar and unfamiliar with. The talk was enjoyed by everyone. The annual ‘Easter Bonnet Parade’ took place amidst a rousing chorus of the Easter Bonnet song, sung with gusto by our members. The eventual winner was Anita Jeffrey. Further details were announced for our summer trip in August to Hampton Court Castle & Gardens in Hereford. Please ring Pearl on 772657 for more details. If you are a sole trader, a partner in a private firm, or a company director, then have you protected your business against all eventualities? Many business owners will have various forms of key man insurance to protect against the possibility of critical illness or even death, but most do not protect against the risk of becoming incapable of managing their affairs. This could occur for numerous reasons such as an accident, a stroke, or an illness which leads to the owner becoming mentally incapable. There is no automatic right for any other person to step in and deal with your business affairs if this were to happen to you. In particular, the law changed in 2013 in relation to directors of a limited company. The changes were designed to remove the stigma associated with mental illness, and now prevent a company director’s termination by reason of that person’s lack of capacity to carry out their role. No matter how small your business is, if you become incapable of dealing with your affairs, then no other person can get access to the business accounts, no person can sign on your behalf, staff and suppliers cannot get paid, and any potential contracts could be lost. This downward spiral could mean the end of the business completely. Every business should therefore plan for the possible loss of an owner through illness or serious injury by having a Commercial Lasting Power of Attorney in place. Whilst these documents can be relatively straightforward to prepare, there a number of considerations which need to be taken into account. For example, if you are regulated by a professional body, then your proposed Attorney must also be regulated by the same body. If you are a company director, then whilst your other directors would be a sensible option to appoint, you must consider the implications of giving them increased voting rights if they were to use the power of attorney? Whoever you decide to appoint, it is essential that you plan for the possibility of being unable to act in order to protect not only your business, but also your employees. For a no obligation meeting to discuss this at our Porthcawl Office, please contact Jonathan Powell, Head of the Estates and Trusts Department.

Finance EQUITY RELEASE BUSINESS THROUGH THE ROOF 2016 has so far been notable for the mammoth growth of a particular area, that being Equity Release, as retired clients find that they have a number of different issues to deal with across the board. Of the many uses for the modern Equity Release solutions that exist these days, these include helping the family (deposits for house purchase being extremely popular), paying off interestonly mortgages (the BIG growth area), home improvements, inheritance tax planning, holidays and new cars, private hospital operations, pre-paid funeral plans, plus numerous others. With options to pay interest-only for life, or no payments at all, many, many clients are now seeing the true benefits of an increasing number of plans, from a variety of specialist lenders, some being very well-known names. Did you also know that Equity Release can be used to help with the purchase of a new property? We recently had a lady who wished to move from a three bedroomed house to a McCarthy and Stone apartment, however she was selling at £130,000 and the apartment she was buying was priced at £150,000, a £20,000 difference. The solution was simple. An Equity Release arrangement was taken out for the £20,000 shortfall BUT on the NEW property, hence she was able to move finally. Without this arrangement she could not have done so – she simply did not have the £20,000 required to fund the difference. Needless to say, she was delighted. A widowed gentleman recently helped his niece with a cash gift from taking out Equity Release. He had no need of the money himself but he was able to help his niece achieve her goal – his view was simple: this was an early inheritance, much like grandma who helps her granddaughter with a deposit for her first house. These transactions are becoming ever more common. For those of you still with a mortgage you cannot afford or which you need paid off but you don’t have the capital to do so, we could well have a solution for you and an experienced, fully qualified and FCA-Regulated Adviser will call to have an informal chat, and to give you some ideas on your options. Call us on 01656 782545 – you could be glad you did.

simply going through a routine, a routine which involved getting up each and every morning and simply “putting up” with the dark place that was his employment. We managed to not only advise Mr Jones of the change to the terms of his pension, but organised his financial affairs that led to him six weeks later handing in his notice and retiring. He could have done so as he reminded me after four weeks, but he spent the two weeks on the phone simply asking the same questions as he didn’t believe what we were saying to be possible. Over the weekend I have thought quite a bit about not only what we have done for Mr Jones but hundreds of other people, many of whom have been sceptical and many of whom have not wanted to pay a fee for advice – all of whom have been given the same promise – if we can’t make a difference, if we can’t add value simply don’t pay us. I know Mr Jones felt the same – but now is an extremely happy individual in a really good place mentally and I guess the fee he paid us was a small price by comparison. If you are like Mr Jones - sceptical of financial advisors and possibly wanting your dreams to come true, then maybe it’s time you too called Bartholomew Hawkins. MR JONES - A VERY HAPPY CLIENT! When Mr Jones a relatively new client called into the office for his annual review recently, I was somewhat surprised to see him with a card and a bottle of wine. I was later to discover that the wine and the card was for us as a thank you for what we did, he said “thank you for making my dreams come true”. Mr Jones, when we first met was 56 years of age and in a little bit of a rut, he was not enjoying the bureaucracy in his job of the last 30 years and couldn’t wait until he reached his retirement age of 65. He came to us with a simple query on a change to his company pension scheme, he had never used an Independent Financial Advisor before as he had always been wary. However, having met with Mr Jones and chatted through with him what he wanted it soon became apparent that he was Seaside News | 42

BIRD WATCH: CHAFFINCH

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

The male Chaffinch has a colourful plumage with a chestnut back and pinkish-orange underside, a blue crown and nape and distinctive double white bars on the wings. The buff-brown female is darker above than below and has pale wing bars. During the breeding season the male defends its territory and main food source of invertebrates (seeds and other plant material are eaten in winter). The species is susceptible to the Fringilla papillomavirus disease, which produces growths on the foot or bare part of the leg. These can vary in size from a small nodule to something that covers the whole leg. Garden BirdWatch data shows that Chaffinches are spotted more often in Welsh gardens than other parts of Britain. Although largely insectivorous at the moment, try attracting them to your garden by feeding sunflower hearts on the ground. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. If you enjoy watching birds in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. Someone once said it is better to be proud of a small garden than to be frustrated by a big one. If, for whatever reason a small garden is what you have, you can still grow vegetables and flowers. You don’t need a farm to grow fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits. Plant breeders know home gardeners want a high yield in a small space, so they’ve been developing more varieties that can grow in a small area or containers. Vegetables need at least 6 hours direct sunlight, and try to space plants properly; plants set too close together compete for sun, water and nutrition. Plants in pots need a boost with some liquid fertilizer. The daffodils are fading fast but ready to take over are the bluebells, noticed them in the verges on the dual carriageway coming from Porthcawl to Laleston, Spanish variety, I think but still lovely bluebells. Our Annual Plant Sale will be held on Saturday May 5th 10am if you are thinking of buying plants please come. There are lots of favourites and all quality plants. There will be a coffee morning with all the usual attractions. Next Lecture May 9th. Gwen Bradford

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB May is a glorious month with spring rolling into early summer although, until the middle of the month, frost can still catch you out! Take care with tender bedding plants, petunias, marigolds etc. It’s best to leave planting them until later in the month, even if the Garden Centre is encouragingly full of them! Give them a good soak before you plant them and hoe at least once a week, competition is strong for nutrients this time of year and we want the flowers to win! Trim evergreen hedges like box and yew to get them looking lush for summer but take care as it is illegal to disturb nesting birds, best to check first. Pinch out the top of broad beans once they flower as this helps keep black fly at bay. (Lovely steamed with a little olive oil and lemon) Runner beans, traditionally, should be planted Chelsea Flower Show week. Now the grass is growing well mow your lawn once a week – but – did you know the lovely smell of fresh cut grass is actually the plants way of signalling distress – my husband says he couldn’t possibly be cruel enough to cut it now! Health KNEE REPAIR LEADS TO PASSION FOR CYCLING Sports enthusiast Tim Williams, a trainer with Lloyds, has undergone surgery twice with specialists at Nuffield Health. Formerly a keen ice hockey and touch rugby player, Mr Tim Williams is delighted with his treatment and is now a keen cyclist raising money for various charities and has helped set up a growing new cycling club, the Pontyclun Flyers. Four years ago, as a result of heavy lifting in the gym, Tim Williams caused hernia damage. Tim obtained a referral to the specialist hernia surgeon Mr Alan Woodward at the Nuffield Health Cardiff Bay Hospital and didn’t look back. Tim comments, “The service given was as good as gold.” Two and a half years ago, whilst playing touch rugby, Tim stumbled and badly damaged his knee. Following a trip to A & E, his knee swelled and through his health insurance, Tim had no hesitation in requesting a consultation with Nuffield Health knee specialist Mr Rhys Williams, who confirmed the diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament injury. More than happy with his subsequent surgery, he was also delighted with the physio rehabilitation he received at the Vale hospital. Three months after surgery, Tim began rehabilitation on his road bike and became a very enthusiastic cyclist. Photo: Tim Williams in action as an enthusiastic cyclist

THE HEALING POWER OF LEMONS Lemons are regarded as a good cleansing agent for the body and the peel impedes tumor proliferation according to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Likewise, research in the journal of Nutrition and Cancer found a striking reduction of squamous cell carcinoma in those who ingested citrus peel, compared to participants who only consumed the juice. The team believes these findings are due to the concentration of d-limonene oil in citrus fruit rinds – a known inhibitor of breast, lung and colon cancers. www.newstarget.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

DIABETIC FOOT CARE Damage to your nerves is the thing most likely to affect your feet if you have diabetes. It is relatively common for people with diabetes to not feel foot problems until they have developed, as nerve damage often shows itself gradually over time. However, some noticeable signs are a loss of feeling and sensation in the feet, tingling, or pins and needles. Even if your feet look healthy, it is important to ensure you have regular check-ups with a foot care professional as well as a diabetic assessment at least once each year. Consider the following advice on how to take care of your feet: SHOES - It is important to wear well-fitting shoes that don’t squeeze or rub. BE AWARE - Be aware of any loss of sensation in your feet. Don’t walk barefoot and avoid extremes of temperature. TOENAILS - Cut or file your toenails regularly. CHECK YOUR FEET EVERY DAY - Look for any signs of redness, pain, corns or build up of hard skin. TOUCH TEST - Ask a family member or friend to do a quick ‘touch test’ to assess the feeling in your toes. Lee Giles First Choice Footcare Tel: 07815848339

WHERE TO GET NEW DENTURES When the time comes to replace your dentures where do you go to get new ones? Hopefully this article will help. You have two options. One is to see a general dental practitioner (GDP). A GDP can provide all aspects of general dentistry, including the provision of new dentures. The other is to see a Clinical Dental Technician (CDT). A CDT is a dental technician that has undertaken extra training so that they can make dentures direct to the patient from start to finish. One way that you can NOT get dentures is from an unqualified, uninsured and unequipped Dental Technician. Dental Technicians that make dentures to patients without the supervision of a GDP or CDT are breaking the law and should be reported to the General Dental Council. Arts COR BRO OGWR - CONDUCTOR’S FAREWELL CONCERT

The choir’s ‘Mainly Mozart’ concert in All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl, was a fitting tribute to its conductor, Nicholas Bromilow. Choir, soloists and orchestra combined to give a magnificent performance, the highlight of which was Mozart’s Requiem, sung with passion and confidence. It was pleasing to see such a large audience, with Madeleine Moon, Carwyn Jones (our President), Wyn Griffiths, Town and Borough Mayors also attending. At the end of the evening Nick thanked choir and audience, paying special tribute to our long time accompanist, Glenn Crooks. He told the choir committee that he had never met such a hardworking group, and thanked chairman John Trotter personally for his help and encouragement. Recently Nick has taken on more choirs and studies and felt no longer able to give Cor Bro Ogwr the time it deserved. He expressed his gratitude for the experience the choir had given him and under his baton, we too have learned much. Our former conductor, EdwardRhys Harry, is stepping in for the summer term while the choir auditions for a new conductor. For more information call 01446 775356. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

Porthcawl is buzzing with live music at the moment but I wonder if it’s going to implode. I wish landlords would work together and perhaps spread things out. Sadly, the Seahorse has closed, as landlord Rob was a great supporter of local music – I wish him all the best. The good news is that the jam nights are moving to the Porthcawl Hotel every Tuesday and Thursday. There’s also a good jam night in the Picton every Thursday. The Prince and the Marine have live music on a Friday while the Royal Oak has theirs at 6.30pm on a Sunday. Well done to Cornelly legend Wayne Davies for selling out his ‘Cornelly Rocks’ charity night at Pyle Legion on 28th May. If you haven’t got a ticket, head for the Seagull, Rest Bay, to check out the brilliant Cover Sluts. It’s Daz the drummer’s big birthday so don’t miss – and happy birthday to my great friend Naz (May 10th) and singer Abi (May 22nd). RIP Howard Marks, what a character, he’ll go down in Welsh folklore. Rest Bay’s Jack Taylor’s band FarYoung has two singles, ‘Never Let Go’ and ‘Back to Sleep’ for download. Take a peep at their YouTube video! And keep the calls coming on your music news. Stag Marks Tel: 07549 728356 Picture: FarYoung

Arts ARTIST IN RESIDENCE AT CARNEGIE HOUSE

From May 24th-27th, Tracy Evans will be the Artist in Residence in Bridgend’s new Arts Centre, Carnegie House (old library on Wyndham Street). During her residency, Tracy hopes to speak to as many women as possible who have given birth in their lifetime: it doesn’t need to have been recently. She wants to create high-energy, collective performance spaces. “This isn’t about performing in front of someone else” she says, “when a woman tells her birth story she is sharing some of her most intimate, vulnerable, life-changing experiences. During my residency, I want to find ways to create spaces in which women feel safe and empowered to share their stories.” Giving women a space to speak these stories is what Tracy is passionate about, “Too often women feel like people don’t want to listen to their birth stories. At least not more than once. At least not after a few weeks of giving birth. We are expected to “get over it”, “move on”, when we have been utterly transformed by this experience.” To find out more about events during the week please visit www.traceofthesea.com and www.carnegiehouse.co.uk.

BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR UPDATE After a busy month of choir related weddings, choristers are currently focusing on learning for a Massed Concert at Birmingham Town Hall on May 7th. It’s the occasion of the 50th Birthday celebration of Canoldir Male Voice Choir and BMC is proud to be invited. The Bridgend choristers will be joined by the choirs of Cardiff Arms Park, Dunvant & Pontarddulais, as well as soprano, Menna Cazel Davies & violinist, Jody Smith. If its as successful as a previous event, there’s much to look forward to. Plans are also progressing for the Choir’s Fundraising Luncheon, with guest speaker, the award winning Journalist, Broadcaster & Author, Carolyn Hitt. This takes place at the Heronston Hotel on Friday, 17th June. Enquiries for tickets/ tables are welcomed by Choir Secretary, Gareth Reese T. 07773 170373. ART IN FOCUS If there is one exhibition I would go and see this summer at The National Museum of Wales in Cardiff it would be ‘Augustus John in Focus’. Occupying one gallery we get to see why this Welsh artist was considered a genius of his time, perhaps one of our first true modernists. An explosion of stunning faces will greet you as the exhibition is displayed in a way that gives great visual impact: gorgeous portraits of family, friends, celebrities, and some of the most beautiful are of young black women. John’s use of colour hits you straight away: it is believed his artistic skills flourished after he had a traumatic accident when diving into the sea in Tenby. A bang to the head triggered some kind of creative element within him: he grew a beard, became a bohemian, and developed a passion for gypsy culture. One of his artist friends claimed that John had been kissed by the fairies and when he had a paintbrush in his hand it was like magic. Come and see for yourself the magic that is Augustus John. The exhibition runs till the October 31st. Email me on: josephinelewington@yahoo.co.uk for more information. Josephine Lewington MA

Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Downwood Films has been in existence longer than most other production facilities in South Wales, and it is a remarkable fact that nineteen out of its twenty-one films have mostly been shot on one 16mm film camera, the venerable Arriflex 16BL, which has been with me since the beginning, having already spent the first eighteen years of its working life with BBC Wales in Cardiff. So this month I would like to pay tribute to a wonderful and reliable piece of equipment, truly the unsung hero of the business. I have been operating it regularly since 1988, a fact which itself must be something of a record, and although the Arri has been joined by other cameras, it continues to be the mainstay of Downwood’s output. For the technically minded, it runs at 25 frames (or pictures) per second and is fitted with a 12-120mm Angenieux zoom lens. It doesn’t mind when people disparagingly refer to it being a relic of the past, for if you will permit me to quote from one viewer of the recently-released Penarth film: “Loved it, especially the film quality”. In the digital age, I am pleased that people still notice when traditional methods are used. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We’ve had some great presentations recently and we also held our annual Alan Thomas Memorial Trophy Competition, which consisted of up to four monochrome images (prints or digital) from each entrant. The winner was the photographer with the highest aggregate score for their two top scoring images. Les Loosemore judged the competition, awarded the marks and provided an excellent critique on each image. The winner was Richard Craze with 39 points for his images ‘Coastguard Doors’ and ‘The Big Top’. David Jones, Glyn Edmunds, Jeff Evans, John Corcoran and Richard Jenkins shared second place with 36 points. Geoff Baker had third place with 35 points. Congratulations to Richard for winning the competition and a big thank you to all who participated for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. We are also working with Porthcawl Town Council in regards to their Porthcawl Photography Competition, which is now open for entries until 1st July. Full details at http://promotingporthcawl. com/ Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps. co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. telephoning 01656 665547 or 01656 741354. Hailing from Cardiff, Railroad Bill are Britain’s best loved and longest running touring skiffle group. For nearly 30 years these tea chest bass twanging tornados have taken their uptempo, acoustic blend of folk, blues, rock n roll, jazz, music hall and punk round the world. In recent years they have enjoyed a revival as a superb festival band rocking stages at Glastonbury, Bestival, Camp Bestival, Wychwood and others. They have also had a new lease of life on the retro and vintage scene playing at events like Goodwood Revival and becoming regulars at Itchy Feet nights where they convert huge crowds of young people to the gospel of skiffle.

POEMS MORNING SUN

Whilst sitting here in the morning sun, I suddenly feel my life has only just began. Taking in these sunshine rays, I suddenly go off into a daze. The sunshine fill’s me with such energy, thinking what of how my life could turn out to be. So I sit here and begin to pursue my goals, thinking how to lay them out before myself, I suppose. I begin to make the ultimate plan, to live the dream far away in a foreign land. The sound of the sea and the flocking of the gulls, makes me feel how my life was so dull, time to travel, time to leave the nest. Time to make my life the very best. Callum Williams North Cornelly

THERE’S BIRD SH*TE ON ‘NYE BEVAN This Easter down in Cardiff, World’s media there to see, It’s biggest ever running race, Mo Farrah ran with me.

They tarted up the castle, And sang there at the start, I felt the goosebumps on my neck, Our nation’s beating heart. Our only fear was from the clouds, An opening of heaven; And then a little voice parped up“There’s bird sh*te on ‘Nye Bevan.” As watching down from Queen Street, He’s gathered with the masses, Shouting to the World’s ‘elite’, “Save the NHS you asses!” I do believe he smiled though, To see the crowd’s endeavour: The way they lifted us to run Will stay with us forever. It will rain, there will be pain, Austerity will weaken, But, please God, keep ‘Nye Bevan thereHe’ll always be a beacon. Will Edwards, Porthcawl Seaside News | 58

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Faith in the God of Hope did save the day Fling wide your doors! Bid others join you there! And Hope again is filled by those who pray In hope, hope in Christ’s name

The Welsh are an ancient peoples. Conquerers and conquered they have been. A country full of cultural steeples. With customs to celebrate a country, so keen. Victories to celebrate, losses to mourn, what trouble? Achievements are plentiful, discoveries to be seen. Welsh customs, are like a water ripple. Ever growing, widening but lean. There is so much that makes Wales rock and tumble! New powers for Wales; what will it deem? National pride can make a person so humble: Citizens and constituents; your help we need. As the Welsh embrace becoming more responsible; There is a growing confidence; that’s reasonable. Now for some good days, instead of a permanent stumble! Loud and clear “Independence For Wales”; do not mumble. Anita Griffiths Kenfig Hill

HOPE CHAPEL

Who were those men of faith who heard God’s call To rise and build a house for Him? Not one of grand design, - humble and plain That those of lowly birth, the blind and lame Might come with joy and open heart to find The God of Hope, so Hope became its name And so they built, and others heard God’s call And gathered there as families to pray And as they brought their worship unto Him Twas they themselves became the Church within Proclaimers of the Gospel day by day The God of Hope did now this chapel fill With hope, hope in His name But many buildings crumble and decay As centuries do tick their hours away Brave warriors grow weak. Must doors now close?

So raise your songs of joy and praise to Him Who called these men to lead us in God’s ways Lay your foundation always on His word And strengthen now your walls with prayer and praise People of Grace in Hope arise and say Our God does give us hope for each new day Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

WELCOME THE SUN

Another day and a bright sunny morn The song of the birds heralding the dawn, We look to the east to the far horizon There is a beautiful glow where the sun is rising, We welcome it’s warmth so much it is worth As it sends down its rays to warm up the earth, The animals emerge from their winter hibernation That adds to the wonders of nature’s creation, The birds are singing they are coming back home From far away lands where once they had flown, Our winters are cold they couldn’t stay They flew to warmer land so very far away, In hedges and trees they build their nests To lay their eggs and have a rest, The trees stand tall their branches turning green They look better now than what they have been, The suns warm rays are playing their part To bring out the flowers for summer to start, The sun is overhead and sinking in the west It’s sinking fast after giving its best, It’s getting dark the sun has gone It might shine again with a brand new dawn, A glance to the east to look for that glow To wait awhile for the sun to show, Our summer is great and its so grand For this is our green and pleasant land, So enjoy the sun and watch it rising From the far and distant horizon. Sport TAP IT OUT CC The ladies section rides are now under way, and all new attendees have put away their nerves and are starting to enjoy cycling in a group. The idea of the ladies group and the club in general is to help get people cycling with a group of like-minded people and destroy the old cycling club stigma of “it’s all about speed and I’ll never keep up”. SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE-BY-SEA SURF REPORT The clocks have gone forward throwing us straight into light evenings and surf after work - yay! Through April there have been a few small swells but nothing spectacular. As we approach May, more surfers will take back to the water after the winter chill. Some popular spots are becoming overcrowded now that outdoor activities and surfing grow more in popularity. Porthcawl is always bigger than Southerndown and Ogmore dudes… go there! Josh Trotman has returned from his travels in Australia and headed straight out to Peniche in Portugal with Will Hedges, Rhys Jones, Jordan Peate, and Ant Woodman so he can display his much improved surfing talents. PORTHCAWL RUNNERS NEWS

The last fixture of the cross country season for us was a 5 mile beach run in Aberavon on 20th March. Our flying postman Geraint Lewis finished well to secure 3rd place in the individual competition within the league. We also had Will Edwards finishing top 20 and Rob Bennett top 40 overall. In the women’s the girls ran together, and Karen Phillips secured a top 40 slot overall. Rain at the Cardiff Half Marathon World Championships failed to dampen our spirits and we had a large group of over thirty travelling up together, and celebrating together afterwards. Well done to all who ran on the day - Laura Butcher got the biggest PB of the day, smashing her previous best for the distance, despite the hailstones! Our club championship finished with the 3rd year anniversary Porthcawl Park Run on 2nd April. Rachel Thomson finished leading lady and female club champion, and the male title was won by Will Edwards in the final race. Well done all. Our three representatives from the walking group at the Vale 18.5 mile coastal walk were Rachel Roberts, Sharon Howley and Sue Thomas, all of whom enjoyed a well earned drink and food in the Pelican afterwards. Will Edwards, Assistant Coach

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARDS NEWS The nights are getting lighter, the weather is getting (gradually) warmer, and summer is on the way. The Nippers are eager to put their hard work over the winter months to good use on the beach. Training on Coney Beach began on Easter Sunday, and new recruits are always welcome. Once the water warms up, the Nippers will be out on the boards and sea swimming. All Nippers will again be taking a surf competency award. They are internally assessed and are an important way for us to see your childs progress. It is important information for you too. The Global Report on drowning [2014] advises that school age children should be taught basic swimming, water safety, and rescue skills. Training in the sea teaches nippers to stay safe in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The years they spend with the Nipper Team gives them the experience, confidence and core skills they will need to progress in surf lifesaving, and maybe become the beach lifeguards of the future! We meet at Pyle Pool on at 8pm on Fridays, and Sundays on the beach at 12.30, with 6pm Tuesday night sessions starting in June. Come along and have a go. Phil Protheroe Seaside News | 60

Sport NEWS FROM P&K GOLF CLUB

TAI CHI NEWS

Spring heralds the beginning of yet another season of competitions at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club. However, the winter competitions ended with the final of the Cocks of the North being played between Mike Sullivan and Derek Edwards against Chris John partnered by Ian Booth. Both pairs had battled through some very damp Sunday mornings for the last six months to reach the final. Chris the club Captain sacrificed the last few days of a Portuguese holiday to turn out for the final, sadly his dedication to the cause was to no avail and Mike and Derek emerged as deserved champions. The Sunday afternoon golfers otherwise known as the Penguins crowned the Emperors team as champions. The first summer competition, The Pavilion Cup, was played in testing conditions and from a field of 136 players Gary Diplock emerged victorious scoring 40 points, and David Phillips was runner up with 39 points. The veteran section has also started their cup competitions and Mike Rennie won the RD Thomas Cup with a score of 36 points. Over the winter the club has undertaken a major improvement to the irrigation system, and in readiness for hosting qualifying for the Amateur Championship in June several tees have been rebuilt and improved. Ian Booth

The Porthcawl Swimming Dragon School of Sun Style Tai Chi has recently had the honour of hosting a Weekend Workshop given by a great Sun Style Tai Chi master Mr P Nyfelt of Sweden, who trained continuously in China with the daughter of the styles founder for ten years and who is her lineage holder. The Workshop was a great success and well supported by high ranking Tai Chi teachers coming from all over the UK to visit Porthcawl. The Swimming Dragon pupils who attended were inspired to realise what a bright future they had following the teachings of a man who is arguably the best teacher of the arts of Sun Lutang in Europe. The Tai Chi teachers attending were amazed at Teacher Nyfelt’s depth of knowledge about a wide range of Chinese martial arts and the impressive clear information and detailed responses to every question he was asked. They requested similar Week End Workshops by Teacher Nyfelt should take place annually. John Jones

PORTHCAWL CRICKET JUNIOR SECTION The playing season has just begun and so has outdoor training up at Locks Lane on Friday evenings from 6- 7.30pm. LAWN BOWLS Fancy a friendly game of bowls? No tiresome club uniforms or rules - just play to get out, have gentle exercise, meet folk and have fun. We are a club which aims to provide just that. Set up in 1991 in Porthcawl under the name “the 91 club,” we moved in 2015 to play at the Pyle and Kenfig Hill club and changed our name to Bowled Over. Our first meeting this season was Sunday 17th April. We meet 3 times a week, on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday at 2.15pm and you can come every time or just as it suits. We are hoping this year to run an ‘in house’ competition with a trophy to be awarded but, again, just for fun! Male, female, young, old, experienced or beginner, you will be made very welcome. We can supply bowls until you decide to continue and purchase your own (a decent secondhand set can be as little as £30.) You will need flat smooth soled shoes. Contact me, Dave Wakefield, for further information on 01656 749614, 07500 945752, or email getdavwak@gmail.com Hope to see you soon. Dave Wakefield
