BECAUSE WE CHERISH YOU In 1980, 40 Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian Elders convened to discuss the importance of preserving our culture to benefit future generations.

The resulting text of that meeting, “Because We Cherish You,” laid out the Elders’ vision for maintaining our way of life and passing it on to our grandchildren.

Since then, Sealaska has taken on a shared responsibility of protecting and strengthening the collective wisdom of our Elders. This commitment is realized every day in our actions that positively impact shareholders, our communities, and how we conduct our business.

Since the formation of Sealaska in 1971, we have honored — and will continue to honor — the words of our Elders. We are committed to perpetuating our culture, revitalizing our language, and making valuesdriven decisions that lead to successful future generations.

This year’s annual report is a reminder of the memorable words of our leaders documented in the “Because We Cherish You” book and the important role our heritage plays in Southeast Alaska Native communities and beyond.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW Sealaska achieved another year of record financial performance in 2019 — every operating business delivered significant year-over-year growth. Government & Commercial Services tripled its operating EBITDA following strong performance at Gregg Drilling. We completed the integration of Orca Bay and Odyssey Foods and are continuing to see growth in operating EBITDA post-merger. Natural Resources’ operating EBITDA increased as well following the financial performance of timber and the second year of our carbon sequestration project.

Our businesses are building a solid base for Sealaska’s future.

Our profits facilitate our investment in critical community and shareholder programs, while protecting and preserving our environment for future generations.

OPERATING EBITDA Growth in Operating EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) reflects the financial results of our operating decisions and is the primary measure we use to assess the overall performance of Sealaska’s operations.

SEALASKA NET INCOME Net income encompasses the results of the entire corporation, including operations, investments and ANCSA Section 7(i), along with the effect of interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. In 2019, Sealaska posted the greatest net income the corporation has ever achieved. Increasing net income leads to increasing shareholder distributions. Under the 5-year average of net income dividend formula, shareholder dividends have more than doubled from two years ago and reached the highest level in over 20 years.

Investments

Operations and investments are the primary sources of Sealaska’s gross revenue. Our 2019 revenue — $700M — is the largest in Sealaska’s history. Since 2015, revenue has grown six-fold, reflecting dramatic growth in our operations over a relatively short time.

While the size of our revenue isn’t as important as the size of our profits, the magnitude of the increase highlights the growing scale of our businesses, and the success of our three operating platforms in food, land and water. We will continue to invest in and grow our operations, so they can continue to be the main contributors to increases in all three financial measures expressed in these tables.

CEO LETTER When our Elders came together for the first Sealaska Elders Conference 40 years ago, a single theme emerged: preserving the past and passing it on to future generations. We hear this loud and clear in the “Because We Cherish You” text: “Even from long ago, our grandchildren — we placed high above ourselves. Yes. We cherish them.”

Our Elders’ beautiful words inspire Sealaska to be a better company. We live by — and lead with — our Southeast Alaska Native values, knowing our work will benefit our grandchildren.

These values inspire everything we do. We put community first, build strength and resilience, and act with courage and curiosity. We embrace Haa Aaní, committing to care for our oceans and lands because they have always been — and always will be — the foundation of our people.

This approach, which includes becoming inclusive and open to working with great partners who share our values, has created unprecedented business growth and a dramatic turnaround of our finances. I believe we will create long-term success by being true to who we are — who we’ve been for 10,000 years and who we will be for 10,000 more.

This growth includes Sealaska’s acquisition of sustainable seafood companies dedicated to localizing supply chains, increasing traceability, and respecting the fish they transform into nourishing products. We are also expanding our capabilities in the marine science and engineering industries to guard and enhance ocean health. And our carbon-offset project continues to drive record revenues while maintaining carbon stocks on our traditional homelands.

We hope to offer an example for other companies trying to define and live by values. As we create a supportive work environment where our employees are valued, we are attracting like-minded partners and top-notch talent who share our vision. Sealaska is aiming to prove that business can protect oceans and land, care for community, and be successful because of these commitments — not in spite of them.

Through Sealaska’s continued financial success, we can support and encourage our youth to become the leaders of tomorrow. Honoring our Elders’ words of providing for our grandchildren will keep us inspired and creating progress for years to come.

BOARD CHAIR LETTER Sealaska leaders created the Sealaska Heritage Foundation in 1980 after hearing from a cross-section of Elders at a gathering held in Sitka.

The Elders spoke of their hands growing weary as they clutched on to our culture.

Forty years later, the Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) is stronger than ever, but the team at SHI is not “saving” our culture. That is the responsibility of each of us. We are grateful to all of the people who are passing our precious languages and ancient worldview on to our children.

But being grateful is not enough. We all need to do a little more to relieve those weary hands.

At Sealaska, our ancient values are helping to drive financial success.

This effort will only become “sustainable” when everyone is able to bring their true selves to work every day.

Our Native identities are a huge part of the value we bring to the office.

We cannot continue trying to fit a Western mold. Our ingenuity is ancient.

It is enduring. It is necessary in this world that desperately needs to find a balance.

Much of that ingenuity is contained in our indigenous languages.

Sealaska recently established a $10 million Language Revitalization Fund. That fund will support critical work, but it will not “save” our languages. Only you can do that.

Over the next year, Sealaska and our affiliated nonprofits, Sealaska Heritage Institute and Spruce Root, will develop a 100-year plan. This plan is not going to “save” our cultures, nor will it guarantee that we continue on this tremendous growth in profitability forever. This plan will lay a solid foundation for future generations who are ready to relieve weary hands.

To be clear on the metaphor, this is not a baton hand-off in a track race. This is all of us pulling together in a canoe. We are on this journey together, for the long haul.

WATER, LAND, FOOD Sealaska businesses are value driven. We invest in sustainable, innovative and profitable companies.

The idea of sustainability is not new to the people of Southeast Alaska — it’s integral to who we are.

Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people have always created wealth by protecting and caring for the land and water. That wealth of knowledge guides Sealaska’s businesses and helps attract expert partners, while supporting commitments to ocean health, positively impacting the environment, and combatting climate change.

WE VALUE OUR WATER Everything we have as a people — our culture, our economy, our environment, our food and resources — stems from the ocean. For too long, corporations and individuals have used oceans as dumping ground for plastics and waste without accountability; oceans have become polluted and sick as a result. Sealaska is focused on building a business and talent pool that can help solve these problems. We must do everything in our power to keep our ocean healthy so it will continue to enrich us, for generations to come.

Our dedication to ocean health drives business decisions. In late 2018, we purchased a majority stake in California-based Gregg Drilling. This acquisition significantly increased our coastal engineering and groundwater testing and cleanup expertise. We have expanded bioremediation projects, cleaning up polluted sites in Northern and Southern California.

At the same time, we are building our ocean science capabilities, making our team more agile, diversifying our client base, and adding new equipment, including two deepwater robotic sampling rigs with Gregg. These robotic rigs will allow us to do advanced geotechnical surveys of the sea floor, showing how climate change and other forces are impacting our oceans. Understanding the challenges of the ocean makes us better equipped to address them.

WE PROTECT OUR LAND Our connection to place is central to our people. We appreciate what our land brings us and, in return, we protect it.

CREATING A UNIFIED APPROACH

MANAGING HEALTHY FORESTS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Community forest partnerships unite local communities, landowners and land managers in natural resource management. The Hoonah Native Forest Partnership and the Keex’ Kwaan Community Forest Partnership (Kake) aim to bring a community-based approach. Both partnerships span over 315,000 acres including Sealaska, village corporation, and state and federal land surrounding Hoonah and Kake.

These partnerships help build local workforce capacity, diversify the local economy, and implement projects to improve watershed health. Sealaska is proud to be part of these homegrown initiatives in Southeast Alaska Native communities.

Sealaska manages 365,000 acres of original ANCSA land. In 2016, Sealaska entered California’s cap-and-trade program with a 165,000-acre carbon-offset project. The project ensures that our communities can continue using these lands for hunting, cultural activities, and low-impact tourism.

Carbon credit revenue will continue to generate significant profits for at least two more years and Sealaska leadership has taken steps to ensure positive shareholder impact for the next 100 years. The program combats climate change, benefits our shareholders and the environment, and reaffirms our commitment to core values.

WE TREASURE OUR FOOD We take pride in the food that our businesses produce, using quality and low environmental impact as measures of their success — not just volume and the bottom line. That is why we welcome sustainable seafood companies into our Sealaska family. Seafood from well-managed fishing operations has a fraction of the carbon footprint of other sources of protein. Investing in these operations makes business sense and contributes to a healthier ocean, fish population, and people too.

One example of Sealaska’s growing strength as a seafood company is the merger of Orca Bay Seafoods and Odyssey Foods. As a result of this April 2019 merger, the company doubled in size, making it dramatically more efficient and competitive. The new company — Orca Bay Foods — combines processing proficiency and marketing expertise to form a true leader in food production. Orca Bay can process up to 3.5 million pounds of food each month.

Our seafood operations look to the future — protecting the environment while ensuring profitability and benefit to our shareholders. We see these values at work at Independent Packers, LLC, which has been part of the Sealaska family of companies since 2016. IPC partners with a long-line cod fishing operation that uses a hook-and-line method that allows greater care in handling, so IPC can creatively maximize the value of each fish. IPC can develop 20–30 high-quality products from a single fish using a consistent, high-quality supply chain that retailers can trust.

OUR PARTNERS The health of the economy depends on all of us working together. Sealaska cares about the environment, the rich Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian culture, as well as economic stability. We partner with like-minded organizations and help each other increase our impact in the communities that need it the most.

The Sustainable Southeast Partnership (SSP) is a diverse network of people and organizations working to address complex social, environmental and economic challenges in Southeast Alaska. Partners come together to share skills and tools — exchanging knowledge across disciplines, communities and generations. This partnership has increased production of locally made and regionally sourced products, growing our Southeast Alaska economies and leveraging our local talent. Under SSP, Sealaska and Allen Marine launched a regenerative tourism initiative focused on helping small communities with tailored strategies to develop visitor industry opportunities.

Spruce Root, Inc., a Juneau-based community development financial institution, provides Southeast Alaska entrepreneurs with access to business development and financial resources.

While Spruce Root is best known for providing loans to start and expand businesses, the team also runs business coaching workshops, financial literacy programs, and the Path to Prosperity (P2P) competition to support and promote Southeast Alaska entrepreneurs. In 2020, the competition will specifically focus on minority-led businesses.

Sealaska partner Allen Marine Tours is a family-owned business and one of the oldest tour companies in Alaska.

Sealaska partners with Southeast tribes and Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (Tlingit & Haida) to support community projects. We partnered with Tlingit & Haida for the School Backpack Program and to expose Southeast students to the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP). We want to increase the number of our youth participating in this prestigious program and enhance their chance to succeed in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers.

Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) is more than a partnership, it is family. For 40 years they have worked tirelessly to perpetuate, cultivate and celebrate Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian culture. SHI’s commitment to academic success and cultural preservation is carried out through their involvement with schools and partnering with Sealaska for our scholarship program. SHI sponsors the biennial event, Celebration, Alaska’s second-largest Native gathering and cultural cornerstone. We are proud to uphold the values and traditions of our communities by supporting SHI’s efforts.

Since inception, we have contributed more than $33 million in cash donations and in-kind services to support efforts such as Haa Yoo X’atángi Deiyí: Our Language Pathway.

This initiative provides scholarships to Alaska Native college students who want to learn their traditional language to eventually teach it to others.

The results were clear. Just like the Elders, shareholders want to maintain our way of life and help the next generation thrive — through cultural preservation, education, workforce development, and programs to support youth. And you want us to support these efforts as a financially successful and values-driven company.

OUR SHAREHOLDERS We are driven by your priorities.

We support our shareholders by making investments that impact their lives and celebrate our culture.

This year, the Sealaska board of directors made a major commitment to support Lingít (Tlingit), Xaad Kíl (Haida), and Sm’algyax (Tsimshian) language revitalization. We anticipate spending $500,000 annually for the next 10 years. We are excited to work alongside our shareholders who teach our languages to young people and create new fluent speakers.

We see communities working on this commitment as well, including the Language Immersion School in Hydaburg, Alaska.

Many language students are also engaged through community activities. Language programs reach preschoolers, elementary school students, youth, and adults. They are successful thanks to people like Ben Young, who has committed his life to preserving the Xaad Kíl (Haida) language. His work reminds us of the importance of language as a carrier of knowledge and wealth of our culture.

In 2019, 372 children were enrolled in this highly successful program, more than 5,700 books were distributed, and many parents reported increases in their children’s early literacy and positive social emotional learning skills.

As part of our efforts to support youth, Sealaska is increasing investments in the education of shareholders and descendants before they reach college. Sponsoring the ANSEP Middle School Academy provides opportunities for Southeast Alaska youth interested in careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). In 2019, we directed $50,000 to support the Middle School Academy and assisted with direct outreach to students in Southeast Alaska.

To boost local Southeast Alaska small businesses, we support Path to Prosperity (P2P), a Spruce Root program. This annual competition develops business skills and provides technical assistance to entrepreneurs who want to positively impact the economy, environment and communities of Southeast Alaska.

Village Coffee Company, shareholder-owned and Yakutat’s first drive-thru business, and Foundroot, a Haines-based company that sells seeds that thrive in Alaska’s growing conditions, were the 2019 P2P competition finalists. Each business received $25,000, plus training and support for their sustainable, innovative and community-oriented practices.

Investing in education for our children in their early years is critical to long-term success. That’s why we celebrate Sealaska Heritage Institute’s launch of Baby Raven Reads, which improves early literacy and pre-reading skills for children from birth to five years of age, while incorporating and emphasizing Alaska Native culture.

OUR PEOPLE Our communities allow us to support one another, share experiences, overcome challenges, find solutions, and celebrate successes. We all thrive when we work together.

Sealaska has been humbled and inspired by the efforts of Keex’ Kwaan Community Forest Partnership in Kake. Their communitybased approach has sparked the interest of many young people — offering them an opportunity to engage with their peers and support each other.

Sealaska’s youth development efforts have been critical to bring kids and teens together, connect with them where they are, and build initiatives that matter to them. We look to provide a stable force in the lives of youth by facilitating basketball camps and working with community partners who share our values and priorities. Sealaska also helped fund and support youth leadership to build the Kake Teen Center. The center is a safe, central place for youth to gather, build connections, and get immersed in shared values and roots.

The Organized Village of Kasaan Tribal Council, under the leadership of Tribal Administrator Paula Peterson, exemplifies the sustainable business practices that serve as a model for other communities in Southeast Alaska. By engaging in cultural tourism, they have created an innovative way to spark economic growth by welcoming tourists and teaching them about our culture and our people. Their approach benefits the village while educating visitors about our way of life.

DonnaRae James, executive director of CAlaska, brings together Alaska Natives living in Northern California and beyond to learn and practice our traditions. Her work allows people who are not living in Southeast Alaska to feel the connection to traditional land and Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people; she is a true culture bearer. CAlaska members learn about art, history, singing, storytelling, and traditional regalia making and food preparation. This creates a strong sense of community for those who miss their culture or never had the opportunity to experience it.

OUR CULTURE We are guided by values.

Sealaska strives to embody Southeast Alaska Native values. Throughout this annual report, we have recounted our work to advance the value of Haa Aaní, protecting the health of the ocean and lands. But there are other critical values that guide our work.

Wooch.éen: Working together with each other.

Sealaska formed several Shareholder Participation Committees (SPCs) to foster more meaningful engagement with shareholders.

Each committee represents one of three geographic regions: Southeast Alaska, Alaska excluding Southeast, and the Lower 48 states and Hawaii. The committee members are a diverse group of thought leaders who play an important role in identifying and addressing emergent Sealaska issues. We are excited about offering a new way for shareholders and descendants to engage with company leadership and we hope that committee members will help other shareholders to better understand Sealaska’s vision.

Kuxhadahaan: We are always curious and looking for ways to listen, learn and improve.

Sealaska approaches our work with a spirit of humility and curiosity, and we are trying to inspire this same value in young people. One outstanding example of these efforts is the SHI Latseen Northwest Coast Art and Leadership Academy, which was held last July on the ancestral territory of the Áak’w Kwáan.

Thirty Alaska Native high school students took part in the 11-day academy’s activities that included formline design and basketry, a college success class, and training for strength of mind, body and spirit. The young participants reported appreciation for the opportunity to listen, learn and reconnect with their culture in an immersive way.

Yaadachoon: We strive to work with truth and honesty, and without bias.

Sealaska’s work has always been about shareholders, people and the environment. This is our enduring truth. Clan Leader David Katzeek recently reminded us of this truth: “All the money in the world won’t make you the greatest success, but sharing your resources with your people and future generations is what is important.” He holds Sealaska accountable to this value. We hope you will too.

Analtseen: We fix what hurts us and strengthen ourselves always.

There is a carving shed in Hydaburg, Alaska, where Haida carvers share knowledge about making bentwood boxes and carving totem poles as an opportunity to hand down this knowledge with tremendous care. But it is much more than just a carving shed. As carver T.J. Young says, “Different people come in, some of the people at night might be struggling with addictions and as they carve, they talk about who they are and any type of struggle they are experiencing. It is more like a healing center. People come together and it gives them a sense of identity. This helps everyone.” Sealaska is proud to support this healing space by providing totem quality wood for youth and community efforts.

IN MEMORIAM Thank You Marge Young for Your Leadership Long-serving Sealaska director Marjorie V. Young passed March 14, 2020. Marge served as a Sealaska director from 1979 to 2009 and held positions as chair and vice chair. Marge was a lifelong resident of Craig. She was Haida, Eagle, Frog.

During her tenure as a director, Marge was a steadfast and trusted voice in the boardroom. She advocated for the shareholder permanent fund as a sustainable source of income that benefits shareholders. In 2009, the Sealaska board of directors unanimously voted to name the fund in her honor and it is known as the Marjorie V. Young Permanent Fund.

Joe Nelson, Sealaska board chair who served alongside Marge for six years, said she cared deeply about all Sealaska shareholders and consistently advocated for growing and protecting the permanent fund for future generations of shareholders.

“Marge’s foresight on financial stewardship is something that will guide the corporation for years to come. She will be missed but she leaves a lasting legacy on Sealaska shareholders.�

Gunalchéesh Háw’aa T’oyaxsut ‘nüüsm Forty years ago, Sealaska invited Elders from across Southeast to come together and speak about the future of Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian culture. Two Elder Tributes were held. The first gathering was held May 1980 and inspired Sealaska and the foundation’s first oral history project. The project resulted in the book, “Because We Cherish You – Sealaska Elders Speak to the Future.” The book is a compilation of speeches from the May 1980 Elders Tribute.

A second Elders Tribute held June 3, 1980 honored Charlie Joseph and Jennie Thlunaut.

Charlie Joseph was Tlingit, Eagle, Kaagwaantaan (Wolf) and carried four Tlingit names. At the first Elders Tribute, Charlie spoke about how we have always placed our grandchildren high above ourselves and the importance Image and clipping courtesy of Sitka Sentinel. of handing down generations of Native history and knowledge on to them. He lived in Lituya Bay and was raised in a traditional lifestyle. Some of his efforts included working with the Sitka ANB Education Program, now the Sitka Native Education Program, as well as with the Gajaa Heen Dancers.

Jennie Thlunaut was Tlingit, Eagle, Kaagwaantaan and was taught Chilkat weaving by her mother Ester.

During her life, Jennie became a master Chilkat weaver and taught the art practice to a few select apprentices. She is credited for keeping the tradition of Chilkat weaving alive.

Special guests at the second Elders Tribute included the surviving delegates from the 1929 Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood Convention.
