Seaford’s Town Crier and Mayor Open the 2022 Town Forum! Over 60 members of public attended Seaford’s recent Annual Town Forum to receive an update on Town Council activities over the past year, watched as the deserving recipients received their Mayor’s and Young Mayor’s Awards and heard presentations from local community groups and charities. The 2022 Town Forum, hosted by Seaford Town Council and opened by Town Crier, Peter White took place at The View at Seaford Head on Tuesday 12th April and was a very positive meeting, full of key updates and information, and inspiring messages from the award winners and community groups in attendance. The Town Council valued the opportunity to bring so many people together and recognise some of the amazing work going on in our Town. The meeting began with a live performance from two members from Lake Academy of Dance with their lovely rendition of If Mama Was Married from Gypsy the musical, followed by a presentation from the Town Clerk on the key work of the Council in the last year. Presentations were made by The Youth Counselling Project, Teddy Treats, Cuckmere Buses, Bishopstone United Charities, St Wilfrid’s Hospice, Seaford Bonfire Society, Seaford Cricket Club and The Down Syndrome Development Trust who had all received financial grants from the Council during 2021. All the presentations were informative and helped raise understanding and awareness of how these vital grants can really change people’s lives and improve the town of Seaford. Also present were those groups and charities in receipt of small financial grants (under £500) during 2021, who arranged display tables letting people know more about what they do. Again, the Council thanks those organisations; Friends of Bishopstone Station and The Ambulance Responder Team. The evening moved on to the annual Mayor’s Awards. Mayor, Councillor Rodney Reed, was pleased to announce his awards to individuals that have helped support and enrich the town; Trees for Seaford, Julie Moore from Julie’s Scoop & Weigh, Jonathan and Pat Franklin from Dymock Farm Shop and Sophie Carpenter from Morrisons Seaford. Tom Webster from

Seaford Town Football Club was awarded with a Highly Commended Certificate. The Annual Don Mabey award, awarded to individuals for outstanding service to the town, was posthumously presented to the late Claire Sumners from Plastic Free Seaford. Councillor Rodney Reed said: ‘Claire was nominated and chosen during her lifetime but despite our best endeavours Claire had slipped away quickly so the award is a posthumous one and I am pleased that Chris is here to receive the Shield and Award in Claire’s memory. But this won’t be the only part of her legacy. Many of us in Seaford will work to ensure her work continues. I valued my contact with Claire through Plastic Free Seaford, and I recognised how much Claire achieved for our town through her work encouraging and updating the Seaford Town Council’s Single Use Plastics Policy in addition to the Beach Cleans and enabling local businesses and individuals to be Plastic Free Champions’. The 2021/2022 Young Mayor, Joe Lacy, presented his award to Zoe McCaig of Seaford and Newhaven Sailing Club to thank her for her hard work with young people in the area. Erin Franklin, 2022/23 Young Mayor, informed the meeting that during her year of office she would be aiming to work closely with Seaford Environment Alliance and the eco team Seaford Head School. The minutes and photos of the event will be available on the Town Council’s website at www.seafordtowncouncil. gov.uk or updates can always be found on the Council’s Facebook and Twitter pages, search Seaford Town Council and link to it for the latest news. The Town Council wishes to thank all those that took part, and offer its congratulations to those well-deserved award winners. A daily UKR Community Café has been launched, now providing a social space for Ukrainian guests to meet one another, speak in their own language and share information and experiences. 3 months’ provision of TEFL/ESL Language classes ready to be launched through the voluntary efforts of a team of professional teachers and the provision of space at St Peter’s Church. Wednesday at the UKR café offers an informal ‘assessment’ and signposting. We are happy, potentially, to welcome a limited number of students from other areas. A pathway for accessing formal education and employment with a partnership through ESCC and partners will be offered through a local drop-in at the community café for Ukraine displaced persons. Local grants are being awarded for the purchase of necessary items, provision of essentials, and help with getting on feet. Facilitation of other material support also mediated (including a car, beds, a violin, toys, bedding etc). Over £5,000 raised so far through local giving. Thank you to the many societies, clubs, concerts, bucket collections that have achieved this. Transport provided to help guests reach Seaford. Support on arrival with accessing services, information and support. Flagging up system issues directly with council leaders and our MP Maria Caulfield.

All of this is possible because of the partnership approach that we have formed and the goodwill of so many who live in Seaford. This is Seaford at its best. Our formal S4U Facebook Page has now been set up and can be found at www.facebook.com/ seaford4ukraine More information can be found at Seaford for Ukraine or www.wbbchurches.org.uk and donations are welcome. SEAFORD ROTARY

Bluebell Walk

Seaford Rotary was privileged to have the opportunity to provide the refreshments at the Bluebell Walk at Bates Green Farm, Arlington on 21st and 22nd April, and so Seaford Rotarians took their places at the information kiosk, in the café and the gate booth to the annual blue carpet, ready to welcome the visitors. An estimated 1,000 visitors were warmly welcomed on arrival by our friendly greeters. Visitors could choose from a selection of walks, from a short stroll to a longer walk including neighbouring fields and woodland. Those visitors less able could enjoy the wheelchair route, or the more adventurous could hire mobility scooters. After the walk, visitors could enjoy the delicious refreshments on offer. Our catering team excelled this year with an amazing display of homemade cakes ranging from vegan, dairy free, gluten free and the more traditional Victoria sandwich, fruit, chocolate, coffee and walnut, carrot and lemon drizzle cakes. The favourite is the coffee and walnut Sponge. Over 40 large cakes were consumed by the visitors, as well as daily freshly baked scones and rock cakes, or for those people wanting a little treat, shortbread and rocky road were available. This amazing display could not happen without the sterling support of Rotary ladies baking these lovely cakes and savouries, for which we are extremely grateful. For a more substantial snack our kitchen preparation team produced delicious sandwiches, assorted salads, jacket potatoes, soup of the day and Ploughman’s etc. We were grateful to the wives and volunteers who helped in the kitchen and servery, all under the guiding supervision of Honorary member Pippa Logan, whilst husband Rotarian Mike took charge of the cash register. Keeping the café running smoothly had our table clearers and washer uppers kept busy, with all the tables occupied for much of each day. The result of the two days was over £3,000 being added to the Rotary Charitable Trust account, which will be put to good use for local charitable causes.

Young Writers’ Presentation Evening

After an absence last year due to Covid we were happy to be able to reinstate our Young Writers’ competition, and on Wednesday 27th April the Presentation evening took place at Seaford Head school, attended by students from Seaford, Annecy Roman Catholic and Cradle Hill Primary schools, and for the first time, from Chyngton Primary school. The theme was The Environment which produced some creative and thoughtful writing from the students. Each school submitted up to four entries in prose or poetry.

The judges commented that the standard of the work produced by the students was very high, and all the individual entrants fully merited the certificates that were presented to them. The names of each finalist were announced by Rotarian Mike Allen before each student was presented with a certificate. He then went on to announce the names of the winners and runners up of the competition before the judges read and commented upon the winning poetry and prose entries. The overall winner was Edie McCourty from Seaford Primary school, and the Poetry winner was Florence Vincent from Cradle Hill school. The Mayor, Councillor Rodney Reed presented the cash prizes and certificates to the winning students, and Seaford Rotary Club President Mike Ogilvie presented a cheque to Seaford Primary School, that the overall winner attended, to acknowledge their success. All the students are to be congratulated for taking part in this creative and rewarding competition and we hope that they gain greatly from the experience. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members and new Friends of Seaford Rotary. For more information contact us on www.seafordrotary.org.uk. Greenhavens Network

Growing your own...

a quiet act of revolution, like printing your own money As mounting food costs and bills soar, growing your own food is going to become a necessity rather than a hobby. Combined with our ever-pressing climate crisis there are many reasons to grow your own food. Whether it’s in your own garden, or if you don’t have one, a green space, finding a place to grow your own is vital for not only your own wellbeing but that of the planet. Unfortunately, freedom given to developers for house building has meant that we have up to 40% less provision for green spaces, and this has had a huge societal effect. Research shows the role public green spaces play in better educational outcomes, physical health and mental and social wellbeing, resilience and recovery. Nestled in Yorkshire’s Calderdale valley lies the village of Todmorden, the starting place of the group Incredible Edibles, which took over its town’s public green spaces and has turned them into edible spaces run and maintained by the community. It is a fine example of how produce can be grown within a town setting, using land already paid for by taxpayers. Far across the water in Los Angeles a man called Ron Finley decided to grow on his sidewalk, in an area known as a food desert. Many areas of America are food deserts in the sense of having to travel long distances to get fresh food and vegetables. This was back in 2010 and his attitude that ‘gardening is gangsta’ has led to huge projects being set up dealing with many of the socioeconomic and anti-social behaviour problems within his neighbourhood. I highly recommend his ted talk, incredibly inspirational story of one man and his mission to get fresh food into some of the poorest communities. Here in Seaford and Newhaven we are incredibly lucky with the green spaces we have around us and the new and existing growing projects within these towns. Growing together Newhaven has a beautiful space on the clifftops where they offer various sessions with a fantastic “‘Whatever the Weather Forest School’.

14

Denton has a new community garden opening designed by the children for the children. In Peacehaven there’s a beautiful community garden next to the Oval and the stunning Orchard situated in the Big Park – both beautiful projects and offering a safe haven for wildlife in the ever-decreasing green spaces within Peacehaven – beautiful sites that offer a wealth of volunteering opportunities. Slightly further afield is the Rodmell Food Forest, an abundant space where everything is edible – volunteer day on a Wednesday with lunch and the opportunity to learn from Marc and take some organic produce home. In Seaford we already have a fantastic community garden nestled in the Crouch Gardens which opens on a Wednesday and offers beautiful plants for sale. Trees for Seaford and On the Verge are already making great headway in creating nature networks. We also have some great new community growing projects in Seaford with the Friends of Sutton Downs and the new Peverells Community Garden. Both are just in their infancy stages but welcome volunteers from all backgrounds to come and learn how to grow your own and share in the produce. All of the projects can be found on Facebook, so why not come along and join in? Volunteering can include many tasks for all abilities from planting to surveying, to helping with social media, you can find the project to suit you within your time constraints. At Greenhavens we are hoping to secure funding to set up growing communities within Newhaven so please email me at contact@ greenhavens.network if you are interested. As a network we are here to serve the community, so if you have any growing ideas please let us know. So set the seed of growing in your mind and in your kids’ futures, grow solutions that they can carry on into adulthood. The joys of growing your own are endless – when planting seeds you are giving hope to tomorrow. Miriam Thundercliffe, Greenhavens coordinator.

Seaford’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations In 2022, Her Majesty the Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. An array of events and celebrations will be taking place throughout the year, across the nation, culminating in a four-day UK Bank Holiday weekend from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. This extended bank holiday weekend will commence the Jubilee celebrations with thousands of town criers and pearly kings and queens, pipers, buglers and choirs, across the four corners of the nation, playing and singing specially commissioned music before the lighting of over 2,200 Platinum Jubilee Beacons in unison. Seaford Town Council is busy working with local event organisers to enable our local community to celebrate Her Majesty’s historic reign as we encourage our community to come together to celebrate this historic milestone and reflect on The Queen’s 70 years of service.

The bank holiday begins on Thursday 2nd June. At 2pm residents can come and watch Seaford Town Crier, Peter White (photo above left) at the Lych Gate of St Leonard’s Church, herald a specially written proclamation to signal the lighting of the beacon later in the evening. The Lighting of the Beacon ceremony (photo above right) will take place near The Shoal at Splash Point, along the Esplanade with the beacon being lit by Seaford Bonfire Society at 9.45pm. Before the beacon lighting, at 9.35pm, Richard Brookes a local piper will be playing Diu Regnare a unique tune specially written for this historic Jubilee. At exactly 9.45pm, to coincide with the lighting of the beacon, the Archway Choir will be performing A song for the Commonwealth, filling the nation with the sound of music as we celebrate this special moment in The Queen’s life, and Seaford residents are encouraged to watch this historic moment together. Seaford Town Council would like to thank Smith Metal Fabrications Ltd from Newhaven for building the beacon

16

and Wynnes in Seaford for supplying and installing the beacon post, both kindly donated free of charge. Throughout the Bank Holiday weekend, Seaford Town Council is assisting a number of event organisers with their Jubilee celebrations. This includes the View at Seaford Head, where on the Thursday evening, residents can book in for a tasty Best of British themed menu, before the beacon lighting. On Friday 3rd June The View will be providing the venue for Seaford’s Big Jubilee Lunch Event – a very tasty Jubilee-themed Afternoon Tea with the Mayor of Seaford. On Saturday 4th June, between 10am and 2pm (with a free afternoon guided tour) Beacon Day arrives at the Seafront (Part of the Beacon Show). Presented by Sussex Contemporary Illustrators & Printmakers (SCIP), volunteers will be available from 10am – 12pm at various points along the trail to speak to the community about the project, the artworks and the stories, with a free guided tour in the afternoon. Local charity, Cycling Without Age Seaford, will be running free accessible tours of the exhibition for elderly or disabled members of the community. These tours are limited but will be available to book online at www.wearescip.co.uk. Sunday the 5th of June is the official day earmarked for this year’s big lunch (although big lunches are encouraged across the whole bank holiday). Whether it’s sharing a cup of tea with a neighbour on the doorstep or a bigger bash on the street, join millions of people across the UK to share friendship, food and fun with The Big Jubilee Lunch. Seaford Town Council encourages the local community to get together on this day to say hello, check in with one another and enjoy a magnificent ending to a historic weekend. In addition to the above events, Seaford Town Council is thrilled by the response to independent arrangements from the local community in the form of Street Parties. The UK has a long history of organising street parties to celebrate national events, and it’s great to see our residents getting involved once again. Anyone hosting a street party, event or exhibition can register this themselves online: https://platinumjubilee.gov.uk/events/

Plans are also underway at Seaford Town Council to take part in The Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique treeplanting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee which invites people from across the United Kingdom to Plant a Tree for the Jubilee. Seaford Town Council will be working closely with Trees for Seaford with planting due to commence again in the autumn when tree roots are dormant and new trees have the best chance of flourishing. From individuals to groups and organisations, Seaford Town Council encourages anyone to get involved with the initiative to contact Trees for Seaford for planting advice.

As part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Seaford Rotary has organised a competition for Primary School children who live in the town to write a letter to the Queen congratulating her on reaching her Platinum Jubilee. As well as offering prizes, the aim is to engage

young people in an exercise that allows them to write imaginatively and creatively. Seaford Rotary will organise judging of the entries and they plan to send some of the winning entries to Buckingham Palace. For more in-depth information on all the events and activities, please visit the dedicated Platinum Jubilee page: https://www.seafordtowncouncil. gov.uk/seaford-platinum-jubilee-2022/. Seaford Town Council is thrilled by the community response and is pleased to see how the town is coming together with so many street parties, and so many companies and community groups doing their bit to help make things happen. This is a once in a lifetime event and we are pleased to be able to assist in making the occasion as enjoyable and as memorable for all our residents.

UNO22: six –

Celebrating Everything We Love About Sussex Through Art, Design & Craft Gallery Uno, 14a High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG Summer opening times: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Sundays and Jubilee Bank Holidays midday – 3pm (Closed Wednesdays), from Thursday 26th May until Tuesday 21st June. June is going to be a busy month. At Gallery Uno, as we go headlong towards mid-summer and the longest day we will be marking Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign during the extended bank holiday weekend and naturally we will be celebrating Sussex Day on 16th June. For the Platinum Jubilee, Gallery Uno is delighted to collaborate with Cradlehill School to produce artwork by the next generation of budding artists. Students have been invited to produce a portrait of Her Majesty, culminating in an exhibition of seventy selected Queen’s Heads for our window between 2nd and 8th June. Meanwhile, within the gallery and in recognition of everything great about the county in which we live, we will be showcasing in our own inevitable way another captivating display from members of the Sussex Arts Collective. Our featured artist this month is David Harrison, whose wife Barbie was featured in April’s edition. His extraordinary sculptural pots are a must to be seen.

David Harrison – Potter

Born in London, David grew up in Durham City. He studied at Newcastle School of Art and ceramics at Bath Academy of Art at Corsham, under Ian Auld, Bryan Newman and John Colbeck. Moving to Brighton, he took a post that eventually became that of senior technician to the sculpture

course at the University of Brighton. During this time he acquired a number of skills other than those of ceramics. Concurrently he was teaching in the prison at Lewes besides pursuing his own practice, and eventually he retired from the university and later the teaching to devote his time to his work and garden. David lives near Chiddingly in East Sussex with his wife, painter, Barbie and their two whippets. They share a love of nature and the care of grandchildren. He has experimented with various techniques of pottery including raku and indeed, still makes domestic ware for his household, but since 2000, he has concentrated his efforts on burnished ware. The interest in this method was engendered when he discovered a buried piece of Romano-British pottery on an early iron-making site known as a bloomery near his home. The bonfire-fired piece still retained its waxed surface and when scratched smelled of beeswax, although it had been buried in clay for hundreds of years, proving the stability of this compound. Not far from this find he discovered a number of Mesolithic stone tools, and the forms and texture of these implements still inform his work. The pieces David makes are thrown then altered and assembled in the ‘leather hard’ state, after which he burnishes each piece to a high finish with polished agate. This can take several hours over many days, and it can be a somewhat meditative experience. The work is then bisque fired to a low temperature and subsequently re-fired in a fire made from natural materials such as wood chip, bracken and twigs with inclusions of copper and salt. Subsequently the pieces are polished with beeswax to help fix and enhance the marks of the fire and protect the surface. Contact: www.davidjharrison.co.uk dave@davidjharrison.co.uk. Seaford Photographic Society The annual KCPA Exhibition is a regional competition open to all members of the 50 or so clubs in the Kent County Photographic Association, and several SPS members entered this year. This is a great opportunity to see how our work compares to some of the best amateur photography in the wider region. Well done to Anna-Marie Armstrong, Colin Mitchell, Chris Dawson, Simon Watkins and Simon Rigby, all of whom had some of their images accepted for the exhibition, held at Creek Creative gallery in Faversham during the first two weeks of May. While we are on the subject of congratulations, the club is delighted to announce that our Chairman Colin Mitchell has been successful in gaining his ‘CPAGB’ Award for Photographic Merit. April featured the final set-subject competitions of the season, starting with Street and Tabletop, which were judged by Steven Galvin via Zoom. In the Street Photography category Anna-Marie Armstrong took first place with her striking monochrome Expecting Trouble (photo left). The Tabletop competition gave everybody the opportunity to get creative and have a go at indoor still life images, experimenting with lighting, reflections, backgrounds and textures. Colin Mitchell’s Rose (photo right) was the clear winner. The following week we had the popular annual Landscape competition. This was judged by regular visitor to the club Cherry Larcombe EFIAP ARPS DPAGB BPE5*. Following on from his two 2nd places last week, Kevin Smoker

22

deservedly took the win this time with his excellent monochrome Storm Dudley at Newhaven (photo above), proving yet again that you don’t need to travel to exotic locations to get stunning photos. Last but not least this month was the competition for the Photo of the Year, judged on Zoom by Harry Kingman all the way from North Yorkshire. This is where we submit our favourite two images that have already been entered into competitions this season. Deciding on an overall winner in a competition like this is an almost impossible task and Harry made the point that all those that made the top three, or were commended or highly commended, were of such a high standard that there was little to choose between them. At the end of the day though it was Thelma Long’s portrait In Blue (photo left) that got the winner’s trophy, with Anna-Marie Armstrong’s The Painted Lady (photo below) second. At the end of the month we welcomed back Steven Galvin to give us a talk about advanced editing techniques such as cloning, layers, motion blurring, montages, HDR, focus stacking, replacing skies etc. We also got into debates about the ethics and history of such techniques, and just how far one should go. Our first photography exhibition since 2019 will be held this summer, in late July and early August, and full details will be in next month’s issue. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including the latest news, programme of events, successful images, competition results, and how you can join us.

Sussex Contemporay Illustrators & Printmakers (SCIP) presents

The Beacon Show 27th May to 1st October 2022

Beacon Day – Part of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Saturday 4th June 2022 This summer Seaford-based arts charity, Sussex Contemporary Illustrators & Printmakers (SCIP), will be launching The Beacon Show, a public arts trail running along the iconic Seaford Coastline, which will shine a light on the coastal community who love, use and maintain the Seaford beach and local waters. The exhibition explores the sea swimming community, runners and sailors, beach cleaners and historians who are all passionate about their coastline. Seaford beach is one of the most visited coastal areas in East Sussex, its untouched beaches attract thousands of seasonal visitors annually, and it acts as a gateway to the South Downs, The Cuckmere Valley and the Seven Sisters Country Park. The fourmonth exhibition will include new contemporary illustrations by nine of the world’s bestloved artists including Sonia Alins, Naima Almeida, Sören Selleslagh, The Printed Peanut, Graham Carter, Dave Bain and See Creatures Design. This creative approach offers visitors a unique opportunity to view artworks from within the very landscape which inspired them. SCIP are working closely with Lewes-based photographer, Sarah Weal, to capture portraits of some of the individuals who have helped contribute to this project and the coastal community.

28

Community is at the heart of this project, and it has been designed to capture a part of our coastline’s modern history featuring people who contribute to the wellbeing, diversity and soul of our town in a variety of ways. The SCIP team has spoken to a wide range of people about the project and the content of each beacon has been inspired by their stories and experiences. Collaborations have included Sussex Wildlife Trust, RNLI, Seaford Museum, Rampion, Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club, Plastic Free Seaford, Cycling Without Age and many more.

Environment and Climate Crisis

The Beacon Show cannot tell the story of Seaford beach without exploring the impact that the climate crisis will have on our coastline and the marine life and wildlife. Visitors to the exhibition will learn more about how local residents and organisations are working to reduce CO² levels, reduce waste in our community and protect marine and wildlife. The trail features the ongoing work by Plastic Free Seaford, The Seaford Environmental Alliance, and Sussex Wildlife Trust to support our environment and coastline. The Beacon Show will play a part in climate crisis education, by providing calls for action, and ensuring residents and visitors can find the resources they need to help protect the Seaford coastline and entire planet. Sustainable tourism is extremely important to small coastal communities such as Seaford, and we will be asking visitors to The Beacon Show to use public transport, utilising Bishopstone Train Station at the start of the trail, Brighton & Hove Bus services which run from Brighton to Eastbourne via Seaford, and walk or cycle to enjoy the exhibition. Visitors will also be encouraged to respect Seaford’s Plastic Free pledge by using reusable cups, water bottles, disposing of litter responsibly and refusing unnecessary plastic packaging. ‘Our beach is beautiful for a reason, our community is full of passionate beach cleaners, local environmentalists such as Claire

Sumners, have led the fight in protecting our beaches for years – we want visitors to understand that they must play a part in keeping our beach clean and marine life safe’, says Josie Swan, SCIP Co-Founder.

Youth Engagement

Ensuring young people’s voices are part of this project is very important to SCIP, and we will be working hard to ensure that they are engaged with the project’s themes and get to have creative input too. ‘Getting young people involved in the arts is one of our most important goals as an arts charity. Access to creative expression supports social development and good mental health in young people. Hearing their peer’s voices and seeing their artworks forming part of such a large exhibition will help them feel like their generations voice is valued as an important part the community.’ Children and young people from all over Sussex have been challenged to create illustrations, stories and poems inspired by Seaford beach, SCIP received over 400 entries this February. The illustrative submissions were judged by the SCIP Youth members and all the written entries selected by Libby Hamilton from Rocket Bird Books. The selected entries will be featured on one of the beacons during the exhibition.

Throughout the summer exhibition the Beacon Show will be accompanied by free art workshops, lecture nights and guided tours, all of which have been designed to help the community engage and learn from our exhibition, understand the creative process of such a huge project and learn more about how creativity can help them and their community thrive. On Saturday 4th June, SCIP will host Beacon Day, as part of Seaford’s Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. Volunteers and members of the SCIP team will spend the day at each beacon, speaking to the community about the project, the artworks and the stories. Local charity, Cycling Without Age, will be running free accessible tours of the exhibition for elderly or disabled members of the community. In association with Seaford Environmental Alliance, Sussex Wildlife Trust and paper artist Helen Musselwhite, SCIP will work with the community to create an immersive paper installation which will help visitors learn about the local marine life, and how to protect it. Gardens are important habitats for UK pollinators and recent research has shown that smaller gardens packed with a diverse selection of plants are more beneficial to pollinators than larger gardens with a greater proportion of non-nectar-rich lawned areas. Wildlife campaigner Chris Packham recommends the following: cram in as many plants as possible, including trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Create a pond – even a tiny container pond can attract wildflife. Build to d

The No Mow May campaign was first launched by the botanical charity Plantlife in 2019. It encourages gardeners to not mow their lawn, or at least not all of it, during the month of May, in order to let wild flowers bloom and provide a nectar-rich feast for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, moths and beetles. It’s important because our pollinators are seriously in decline, and we can all help.

a bug hotel and leave dead wood or stick piles to provide homes for woodland insects. When it comes to mowing, Chris is somewhat controversial – just ditch the mower and let the grass grow is his advice. th on

So how did you get on with No Mow May? Did you fully embrace the call to let your grass grow? Or maybe, like myself, you allocated an area of grass to be left uncut in May. Others no doubt felt it was a step too far, and continued to mow their treasured green sward.

The RHS has a leaflet, Get your garden buzzing, listing dozens of plants for pollinators. Information is also available at garden centres and via websites like Gardeners’ World and the Wildlife Trusts. Many of the best pollinator plants are already well known to us and present in our gardens e.g. buddleia, crocus and lavender. Grow a good seasonal selection, avoid double-flowered varieties as the bees can’t get to the central part where the nectar and pollen are found, and avoid pesticides.

The Crouch Gardens-based Seaford Community Garden really lived up to its name last month. Not only were spring flowers giving way to summer favourites in brightly hued abundance, but volunteer friends, who for a variety of reasons had not been around for quite a few weeks, made their reappearance, to be greeted enthusiastically by their fellows. So welcome back Mike, our former vegetables guru, long-term volunteer Veronica, and cake maker extraordinaire Steph, who just happened to have baked a batch of rock cakes for elevenses. Yes! They were soon commenting on the changes, which included Brian and Neill’s ongoing work on repurposing the pizza oven into a store for compost and grit bags, new – and in use – bird boxes made by Brian and the newly repainted classroom exterior courtesy of Val, Lesley and Beth who brushed on paint kindly contributed by Brewers. Meanwhile those vegetables and flowers don’t appear by magic, so Abdul was busy placing runner bean supports and Beth was planting out French beans in the adjoining low raised bed and broad beans which

were ramping up thanks in large part to the earlier placement of a protective frame and netting. And the flowers! In just four weeks our garden has burgeoned with glorious blossom, from the creamy white of Cistus corbariensis to the ecclesiastical purple of iris. Vivid orange wallflowers were contrasting with the blue of forget-me-nots and above eye level the blood-red torches of meleanthus were vying with the mauve-blue of tree echiums thrusting skywards. At ground level pink osteospermum were jostling for attention with the strawberries flowering in a wheelchairfriendly high raised bed. All this and the fruit trees are in blossom too. If you are reading this before Sunday 29th May, visit the garden then to see its beauty for yourself when it is open for the NGS (National Garden Scheme) between 11am and 5pm. If not, then make sure to pop in any Wednesday morning between 9.30am and 12.30pm where you will be assured of a Seaford Community Garden welcome. And look out next month for news of our Macmillan Trail opening in July. The Garden Team Photos from top: Abdul places the runner bean supports; Lovely to see you again Mike; Stately irises; Welcome back Veronica, left, and Steph; Neill converts a disused pizza oven into a sacks store; Brian’s bird box already has tenants; Osteospermum provide colour at the front of a border; Blazing wallflowers.

Wraps off...The Cliff Gardens: A New Community Garden for Seaford’s Seafront Imagine a beautiful garden of native plants in the tourist area at Splash Point, alongside the Kittiwake colony, the Shoal Bench and entrance to the South Downs National Park and Seaford Head Nature Reserve. This muchloved and visited part of the Esplanade has been the subject of our attentions during the last 15 months, and along with the new Martello toilets and concessions, we think it deserves a make-over! Seaford Community Partnership embarked on this project to improve an ugly, deeply pot-holed and unmade-up road between Cliff Gardens and the Esplanade, as part of its contribution to the South Downs National Park Authority’s ‘Ouse Valley Climate Action’ National Lottery bid. At that time, little did we know the complexities of such a project! So much later, having negotiated funding sources to match possible lottery money; discovered which permissions are needed (no mean task..) and sought permissions from the Councils involved; researched suitable construction materials for the beds and pathways; made educational links with Seaford Schools and the Railway Land Nature Reserve in Lewes, we decided on the purpose, and main features of the garden and commissioned local Garden designers Gabby Tofts and Christian Funnell to create it.

Aerial view of proposed plan

40

Our aim has been to create an inspirational and attractive garden with links to the Shoal and the Martello Tower and fields surrounding it – part educational and awareness-raising, part sculptural, and calling for Seaford community involvement of sponsorship and volunteering. It will be a place to relax, to socialize, and to reflect not only on the climate crisis of our times but importantly

and optimistically, what we can do about it. The garden is a ‘Climate Change Garden’, showing how plants can survive in different environmental conditions and how they will need to adapt to the predicted effects of Climate Change of droughts, floods and storms in future years. The garden will be made up of large beds, showing how plants start to colonise salty shingle conditions and gradually form communities of plants providing shelter for each other, creating soil on chalky cliffs and eventually chalk grassland which we are so fortunate to enjoy on the South Downs. The increased plant diversity attracts pollinators like bees, butterflies and insects, provides food for birds and small mammals and creates the biodiversity that nature’s intricate food webs need. The beds will be contained in Corten steel surrounds – each bed representing a different habitat with the plants that can grow there. Our coastline consists of distinct areas: shingle beach, chalk cliffs and chalk grassland, each with its own typical mix of plants and flowers. These will be represented, along with those plants that can survive extremes of drought and seasonal flooding. And lastly we will create a large garden of plants, both native and cultivated, that Seaford gardeners can grow in their windswept coastal gardens to encourage pollinators, provide food for different birds, butterflies and wildlife, and thus increase the biodiversity. Our aim is to create wildlife corridors between the River Ouse and the South Downs. Alongside the plantings, the garden will contain sculptures by Christian Funnell (designer of the Shoal Bench, Birling Gap sculptures and many other well-known Fishbone features). This will give Sculpture interest in the winter months of storms when the garden will lie low and also provide an opportunity to sponsor plaques – perhaps for our children and grandchildren? We are using sponsorship to involve the community and make them

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

aware of the threats of climate change to this vulnerable area and also to show how we can mitigate the effects of this climate change by making life-style adaptations. Above all, the garden themes are educational, informative and optimistic that our individual efforts, scaled up, can made a difference. The sculptures will have a maritime theme – three large painted buoys with bench seating and relevant Big buoy information plaques in benches the meander path and fish sculptures placed in the beds to act as wind-breaks and give height to the garden. These features will offer sponsorship opportunities (as in the Shoal sculpture). Throughout the garden we will position noticeboards, explaining the plantings and many important features of the landscape and its vulnerabilities. A lot of work has been done here in collaboration with Seaford Head School syllabuses and the Railway Land Nature Reserve education department in Lewes so that the garden demonstrates features relevant to school curricula

for pupils of all ages. A second part of the garden is the adjacent Pump Field which will be used as a field study area for children to actively observe, monitor and measure the changes that will occur over time. The garden will have a purpose-built meander path between the beds from Cliff Gardens to the Esplanade, providing easy access for school groups to study the features of the garden, for pushchairs and wheelchairs to travel the length of the garden, and for the general public to enjoy the garden and understand climate change and its implications for this area. There will also be a muchimproved cycle path connecting the Esplanade to the eastern part of the C2 National cycle path. Above all, this garden is a community project: we hope to form a vibrant Friends of Cliff Gardens group of enthusiastic supporters to volunteer to help with construction and maintenance of the garden and its use as an educational facility. If you would like to be involved in this project, we would love to hear from you. Please contact us on hm@seafordpartnership.co.uk.

IN LOVE AND FAITH: ARLINGTON CHURCH & CHURCHYARD A new book about Arlington’s history Arlington is a puzzling place: a tiny village with an outsized church and churchyard. The Saxons chose an unusually low, wet site next to the Cuckmere River. Why? Was it for the sake of trading up and down the river? The church is 500 metres north of a recently discovered Roman road from Wellingham to Pevensey. There was a small, previously unknown Roman town here, at the river crossing. It was abandoned before the Saxons arrived, but they recycled bricks, tiles and sandstone blocks from the ruins and incorporated them in the nave of their church. One Saxon window survives above the porch; it uses recycled Roman material. Arlington may have grown rich on river trading – or as a result of being on a pilgrimage route from Lewes to Canterbury. The lofty North-East Chapel built in 1180, just as the Becket pilgrimage cult began, may have housed relics of a local saint. There was money to be made from pilgrims. At least one more chapel stood in the churchyard, in the southwest corner, but it has completely vanished. Arlington has always been isolated, not helped by roads that in the past were often flooded. century brought the Reformation, dissent and disunity. In the 1640s, villagers egged on by Puritan politicians made terrible accusations against their vicar, John Wilson, who was a Royalist, and succeeded in getting him removed. In the late nineteenth century, the family living in one of the (several) manor houses in the parish tried repeatedly to claim the North-East Chapel as theirs, but they did not succeed. This new book tells the strange story of Arlington church and its churchyard and it lists all the inscriptions. Ann Murray and Rodney Castleden hope that their book will be a useful stepping stone for anyone pursuing family history, or just wanting to know more about local history, and more about this enigmatic church. There are plans of church and churchyard, as well as indexes, all to help you to find the inscriptions – or a lost relative. This 230-page book is the latest in a series of books of inscriptions to be seen in local churches; Bishopstone, Berwick, Selmeston, Alciston and St Leonard’s Seaford, (£12.95), and East Blatchington (£7). Order In love and Faith (£12.95) or any of the other books in the series from Rodney Castleden at Rookery Cottage, Blatchington Hill, Seaford. Cheques payable to R. Castleden. Denton Community Challenge 2022 – Do it for Denton! This year’s Denton Community Challenge has been named Do it for Denton by one of the local schoolchildren who entered the competition to design the logo. The all-inclusive family fun day will be held on Saturday 11th June at Avis Road Recreation Ground in Denton, Newhaven from 1pm – 5pm. This will be the 10th Challenge, and is always well supported by many local families and businesses. There will be all the usual fête attractions including a wide variety of stalls and a licenced bar, plus a BBQ kindly provided by the local 2nd Denton & South Heighton Scouts. Children can let off steam on the trampolines, bouncy castle and climbing wall, while a programme of events in the arena will keep everyone entertained. Sporting activities of all sorts will again be promoted on the day and children can have fun taking part in some or all of these sports challenges. The aim of the day is to provide a fun and inclusive day for families to enjoy, and also to raise awareness of the many sporting groups in our locality. And when it’s time to calm down a bit they can have their face painted and enjoy an ice cream! l

SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB At our meeting this month on 16th June, Christine Campbell-Dykes will be demonstrating Anniversaries for us. We are certain it will be an entertaining and enjoyable afternoon. Maintaining the theme of anniversaries, our Club celebrated its Blue Sapphire Anniversary (65 years) at our meeting in April. Members were encouraged to wear something blue, and enjoyed a slice of delicious celebration fruit cake. We were treated to an interesting talk by Colin Whiteman on Seaford Head Flora and Fauna. Our competition was entitled A Seascape, which proved to be quite a challenge for competitors, but, as you can see from the photographs, the blue theme was continued and everything coordinated beautifully.

How to stop dementia from progressing Dementia is a group of symptoms that can range from memory loss to impaired thinking and problem-solving abilities which usually occurs in old age. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of progressive dementia, which according to a recent study can be prevented through different activities. It has been found that providing independence to dementia patients in their day-to-day functions not only helped them live well, but also made them manage their condition better and more efficiently. Researchers highlight five such activities that promote independence in patients and prevent disease progression.

1. Decluttering or sorting out

Whilst a person with dementia may not be capable of handling all the household chores, they can help declutter, meaning they can help remove all nonessential and unnecessary items from overcrowded places. Removing trip hazards is important for all older people, as our balance and sight decrease with age. It’s particularly helpful for those with dementia who can struggle with their sense of depth or perception, putting them at higher risk of falls. Given people with dementia may struggle to find things, decluttering makes it easier to find what they need – helping them stay independent for longer.

2. Mopping

Being physically active can reduce the risk of many chronic illnesses. Those with dementia can also benefit from it. Mopping is great cardio, with an hour burning off up to 170 calories – equivalent to 15 minutes jogging on a treadmill! Cardiovascular exercises are particularly good for preventing vascular dementia – a common form triggered by a lack of blood circulation in the brain. Another benefit of mopping constitutes the strengthening of our core, reducing the risk of injuries.

Advertising Feature

3. Gardening

Gardening can also be a good way to exercise. It can help manage stress levels and limit feelings of anxiety. Gardening and being outdoors can help people manage depression, which can exhibit similar symptoms to dementia such as difficulty concentrating, disturbed sleep, confusion, and memory lapses. As a result, depression can make the symptoms of dementia seem worse.

4. Cooking meals

Home-cooked meals are a great way to avoid processed foods that are bad for our cardiovascular health. For people living with dementia, cooking and baking can be a good way to get enjoyment – retaining those important feelings of purpose and independence. It not only helps people with dementia stay on their feet but also prevents cognitive decline.

5. Making tea and drinking with friends and family

Research shows that withdrawal from society can lead to cognitive decline. That said, it is important to keep individuals with dementia active and engaged. Therefore, let them make you some tea and enjoy it together. As well as maintaining our social skills, staying hydrated will defend you from UTIs and constipation. Both can cause delirium, intensifying the symptoms of dementia. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise everyone’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Seaford Little Theatre

Rehearsals for Off The Hook

10th – 18th June, tickets from Seaford Tourist Information or at www.ticketsource.co.uk or www. seafordlittletheatre.co.uk and follow the links. Seaford Little Theatre is delighted to be back with a farce! This fastpaced and hilarious romp centres round a case of mistaken identity as two criminals attempt to discover the whereabouts of a stash of money. A cast of motley characters assemble in an ivy-covered hotel where the action is played out amongst coffee cups and calls to dinner. Guests might find themselves sharing a table with a few stray pigs, and the ivy might not be as safe as it looks, but the hotel owner and his randy wife have no doubt that everyone will be well taken care of. Come and enjoy the fun with some well-known Seaford actors, plus a couple of excellent newcomers. All performances start at 7.45pm except the 11th June matinée (no evening performance on that day), which begins at 2.30 m. Tickets are priced at £8 for level seats and £9 for tiered seats. Seaford Natural History Society

Seaford’s Green Spaces

Have you had a stroll around the green spaces in the south of town recently? If so you cannot have failed to see the difference in the fields behind the Martello Tower and around Cricketfield Road. They are bursting with a diverse range of plants which are in turn attracting new varieties of birds and insects, all thanks to a new mowing regime implemented by Seaford Town Council A coalition of local environmental groups (On the Verge, Trees for Seaford, Seaford Natural History Society, The Seaford Community Partnership and others) have been working with the Council to explore re-naturing our green spaces. The council has agreed to an environmentally friendly mowing pattern. Some zones will remain unmown to allow plants to flower

and spread seed throughout the summer, whilst providing food and shelter for wildlife. Within those areas, paths have been mown to allow walkers and their dogs to stroll through the developing meadows. As the meadow matures it will develop a more diverse flora and fauna. We expect to see a thriving and diverse range of insects, bees and butterflies feeding on the flowers that the new mowing regime allows to flourish. Increasing biodiversity will also provide more pollinators for the fruit and veg. of local gardeners.

As a bonus these areas will provide educational opportunities for botanists of all ages, who will be able to study the development of floral communities in three distinct areas of the meadow; mown, unmown and footpath. The Seaford Community Partnership has already provided local schools with the all the equipment they need to do just that.

Just two weeks after the new mowing regime began, new communities are arising.

Last summer local botanists (and SNHS Members) Dr Sarah McKenzie, Judy Pepper and Jenni Empson-Ridler found 46 different plant species in a short survey of Pump Field. I wonder how many they will find when they repeat their survey this year? Mike Vingoe

On the Verge What’s bugging us?

materials, keep the soil healthy, and are a vital source of food for birds, fish and other creatures.

Recently On the Verge volunteers have been thinking a lot about insects, especially since we had the renowned writer Dave Goulson giving us a wonderful talk in Seaford about the theme of his latest (highly recommended) book Averting the Insect Apocalypse. We learnt more about how long insects had been on Earth (400 million years!) and the staggering diversity of insects on Earth (a million different species including 300,000 species of beetle alone!). Dave showed us some extraordinary and beautiful examples. Some we can find right here in Seaford.

It was depressing to hear just how much insect populations have declined across the world over our lifetimes, and worryingly there are gaps in the data as many species, and locations are not carefully monitored. The extensive use of pesticides in agriculture and our gardens, and the plants we buy, have undoubtedly played a part in this shocking decline.

Insects are not just interesting, but essential to life as we know it. They pollinate three quarters of the crops we grow, control pests, recycle all sorts of organic

Encouragingly we learnt that we can help to reverse this catastrophic decline so that populations of insects start to recover. There are steps we can take to encourage insects, by providing food, shelter and space. Even a small garden can be a haven for insects, and consequently for other wildlife. If we don’t have a garden, we can join local groups (such as our green space champions) working to improve biodiversity. Leaving grass in verges and parks to grow longer and wildflowers to flourish and avoiding pesticides in our towns, will all help insect populations to recover. We recently helped with some wildflower planting and learning activities at Chyngton school which will help insect populations there. Young children often have a fascination with bugs, that we sometimes lose by the time we are adults. If you are planning an event in Seaford, we can now lend equipment including insect and other spotting guides, magnifiers, and surveying equipment (funded by the Ouse Valley Climate Action Lottery Fund). Please get in touch to find out more. In June we will have meetings with Buglife, who are helping us with various projects, including pollinator workshops and evaluating potential habitats for insects. This will help us in local green spaces, and our own gardens, to ensure that insects have everything they need to survive and thrive. Do let us know what insects you have spotted around Seaford! open garden at The Long House, Westdean

Thursday 23rd June,11am -5pm

Don’t miss the only public opening this year of The Long House’s celebrated oneacre garden on Thursday 23rd June. Open from 11am until 5pm, we’ll be serving, all day, tea, coffee and some of the best cakes in Sussex. If you’ve not been before our visitors have compared the garden for romance, atmosphere and cottage garden planting to Great Dixter and Sissinghurst. Lavenders, hollyhocks, roses, a wild flower meadow, a long perennial border full of old favourites and interesting

unusual plants, a water folly and a pond are just some of the features. Visitors to The Long House get both a surprise and a bonus when they come to our garden because Westdean is one of the South Downs National Park’s best kept secrets: a charming medieval hamlet with a 12th-century church, a 13th- century parsonage and a handful of picturesque houses, all tucked away in a small valley. Seaford Sessions ‘scuff it up’

They released A Problem Of Our Kind in 2018 following 2016’s live album In Our History, which celebrated a decade of performing together. Awarded 5 stars by RnR magazine, it received glowing reviews across the board and national airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music. ‘We realised most of the songs on the album deal with different aspects of being human – some negative, like selfishness or materialism, and some more positive, like our sentimental side or philanthropy,’ explains Roberts.

The Little Theatre welcomes contemporary folk/ acoustic duo Gilmore & Roberts to the next Seaford Sessions gig on Saturday 25th June at 7.30pm. Q magazine said of them: ‘Gilmore & Roberts take English folk and scuff it up with indie rock drama’ while Folk Radio UK said they are: ‘Capable of making you dance, cry and think… a masterclass in songwriting and a lesson in how to present songs.’ They combine award-winning songwriting with great musicianship and some trademark harmonies to create a powerful wall of sound. Nominated three times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Katriona Gilmore (fiddle, mandolin) and Jamie Roberts (guitar and vocals) met while studying at Leeds College of Music and released their debut album in 2008. Since then they have toured Canada and mainland Europe, played some of the UK’s biggest acoustic festivals, toured with folk rock legends Fairport Convention and won many accolades for their genre-spanning work.

72

‘Us humans are pretty complex,’ continues Gilmore. ‘Somehow it made us want to present these songs in quite a simple way.’ Recorded at the duo’s home in South Yorkshire by co-producer Ben Savage – well-known on the UK roots scene for his own acclaimed musical output with The Willows and Hannah Sanders – A Problem Of Our Kind contains some of the most stripped-back arrangements of Gilmore & Roberts’ career so far, alongside full-tilt band numbers featuring their regular festival rhythm section of Fred Claridge (drums) and Matt Downer (double bass). Gilmore grew up in Knebworth, Hertfordshire, learned violin at school and started playing local folk clubs with her guitarist father at the age of 14. Starting her professional career with folk pop sensations Tiny Tin Lady and singer songwriter Rosie Doonan, she was invited to be part of a new lineup of The Albion Band in 2011 and subsequently joined Albion frontman Blair Dunlop on his solo tours. In 2017 she joined established folk-roots band The Willows. Roberts was brought up in Barnsley, South Yorkshire in a musical family; his sister Kathryn Roberts is a well-respected singer on the UK folk scene. He joined young English traditionalists Kerfuffle in 2007, formed The Dovetail Trio with Rosie Hood and Matt Quinn in 2014, and joined the critically acclaimed Emily Askew Band in 2016. Alongside his regular projects, he has performed with Nancy Kerr’s Sweet Visitor Band and Blackbeard’s Tea Party amongst others. Tickets from wegottickets or Seaford Tourist Information Centre in Church Street.

Alfriston & Cuckmere Valley Twinning Association The Twinners are getting busier as summer approaches, with two events in June. You might still be in time for the Jubilee Quiz Night on Friday 3rd June 2022 at 7pm in the Old Chapel Centre, Alfriston. Entries are open to everyone – not just members. Bring a team of up to six people and your own food and drink, to join us for an evening of fun! Entry £1 a head. Our Members’ Afternoon Tea will be on Sunday 12th June, with musical accompaniment in the garden of one of our group. Plans are now being made for the visit to our lovely twin village of Veules-les-Roses on the Normandy coast for the weekend of Friday 8th – Sunday 10th July. New members are of course welcome, please let us know before 7th June. The associations liaise to arrange accommodation, and members make their own travel arrangements, with lifts and car sharing sometimes possible. Our French friends have their return visit to Sussex on 16th – 18th September. Following the success of our February stroll, members enjoyed another pleasant seafront walk and chat in April, and had fun using the pétanque (or is it boules?) pitch in Seaford in May. Membership is free this year – yes, fees have been waived for everyone in 2022! There’s no need to speak French – our events and visits are planned so everyone can take part if they wish. Our membership secretary is Robert at rmorri1847@aol.com. For queries about the quiz night, you can ask Wendy on 01323 895657.

We held our first ever live concert at the Seaford Little Theatre on 1st April 2022, and we would like to thank all our supporters in Seaford. To our surprise the tickets for this event were, apart from a few, sold out on the first day, raising in excess of £850 for Seaford Little Theatre. The evening was a great success, enjoyed by both the audience and the performers. Everyone just had fun. To this end, the Seaford Sunshine Strummers would like to thank: l

l

l

Seaford Little Theatre for allowing us to use their venue. Without their support this event could not and would not have happened. A special mention must go to Ray Cox for his support and the team of volunteers on the night. Crosby’s Menswear of 16 Broad Street, Seaford. Dave’s gesture for selling the tickets and acting as our Box Office. Luke and his team from Luke Harmer Visuals, for the photography and for producing an amazing DVD for us to remember and celebrate the event.

If you were unfortunate enough to have missed this event, you can catch up with us on the Seaford seafront, playing for our chosen charity, in one of the glass shelters every Friday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm during the summer, weather permitting of course. If you would like the Strummers to feature at an event for you, e.g. open gardens, fêtes and of course our main focus, care homes, then please contact our Events Co-ordinator Alan Smith by email: AlanGSmith412@ gmail.com.

Seaford Stamp & Postcard Club The traditional view of stamp collectors is someone with a pair of tweezers carefully sticking stamps into an album, and for many collectors this is the case. But stamp collecting is such a broad field that it accommodates lots of collecting interests, and this was the case with Hugh Bennet, who gave a fascinating display at our meeting in April. It is first time we have ever met someone who has presented a display which started with a concept for a set of stamps and followed through to its final production. In the early 1970s Hugh had an interest in the stamps of the Gilbert & Ellis Islands which are made up of a group of small coral islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In 1979 the islands gained their independence and changed their name to Kiribati, and Hugh kept in close contact with the Post Office on the islands so that he could get all the new stamps as they were issued. As years went by, he forged ever closer links with the Kiribati Post Office and started to contribute in the design and production of new issues. In the mid-1980s this culminated in the Kiribati Post Office inviting him, and his wife, to come to the islands and help in the production of a new set of stamps based on the theme, Transport and Communications. He was royally entertained and travelled widely around the islands taking photographs. The photographs, as you can see, were then used by an artist to create paintings,

which appear on the final set of ten stamps issued in 1987. His display showed the original photographs taken by himself and his wife, the artwork and stages in the production of the final stamps. A couple of years ago, he entered this display in the prestigious international stamp competition at the London Stampex show and won a bronze medal. There is, however, a sad note to finish this article. Global warming is causing a sea level rise which is slowly submerging the islands. In the not too distant future, the islands are likely to become uninhabitable and the islanders will need to seek a new home. A great loss to the 120,000 people of Kiribati and to the planet. Our May meeting was Jim Etherington presenting WW2 through Picture Postcards. Ian Marshall will present GB Pre-stamp & Early Stamp Covers in June and in July the members’ evening is on ‘PQR’. The club meets on the second Wednesday of the the month at 7pm for 7.30pm at the Seaford Constitutional Club. You are welcome to come along, or if you would like to find out more about the club, visit our website http://www.seaford-sussex. co.uk/sspc/ or from our club secretary David: david.manthorpe10@gmail.com or tel: 01323 492433.

Seaford u3a News The Seaford u3a coffee morning continues to attract numbers of non-members and members alike, as people take advantage of the friendships and social interaction which u3a has to offer. Coffee mornings are now free and take place at the Con Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford. The next date for the diary is Wednesday 15th June from 10am to 12 noon. There is no need to book – just come along and meet people. The season of members’ interest talks concluded with two interesting offerings. The first was given by a member of Polish heritage who talked about her uncle’s experiences during his childhood in Poland and then during WWII. Her uncle, Edward Mikos, wrote a diary in Polish between 1908 and 1946 which the u3a member had translated into English for the benefit of her family. Mikos was born in 1908 in central Poland, a country overrun in World War I, firstly by the German armies and then by the Russians. He was surprised the Germans looked no different to themselves. He moved with his family to eastern Poland after the war to a wilder, sparsely populated region where there were Russians, Belarussians, Ukrainians, Jews and Poles living side by side. In 1939 the area was occupied by the Russians and his family was deported to Siberia where they, with other deportees, were put to work logging. This was hard work with inadequate food, often in winter in - 40 degrees of frost. He was separated from two sisters and their families and never saw them again. His first wife died there. In 1944 he was drafted into the 1st Polish Division of the Russian army. This Division, which he called the 1st Polish army, was made up of Poles, Jewish, Belarussians, Ukrainians, men from Silesia, Pomarania, some conscripts from the German army who had escaped, some escaped German prisoners and even some exiles from Russia condemned as criminals. The commanding officer was Russian and was a good man.

The Division first went to Ukraine, then part of Russia. They then marched on foot to Warsaw, experiencing German bombing and artillery on the way, and entered the ruined city. The Division then fought its way to the Baltic coast and finally down to Potsdam. He was demobilised in 1945 and received several medals, as well as a note of thanks signed on behalf of Stalin. He found himself a house in western Poland, not far from Dresden, where he lived with one sister and his daughter who were able to join him. He lived until he was 90 with a second family. The interesting thing about his journeys was the way in which they tied together the states of central Europe, with which we have become familiar because of the current war in Ukraine. Poland and its neighbouring states have been the battle ground for so many military experiences, and Edward Mikos was part of this. The final talk in the series was on opiates and given by a member who was both an anaesthetist and a pain consultant. He talked about different types of pain and how different pain relief was appropriate to each. In some cases opiates were appropriate but in others they would not be effective. This was quite a technical talk but well explained for a mainly lay audience. For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack.

Seaford Choral Society

And Now for Something Completely Different…

A chance encounter on a train started it all. The composer Alexander L’Estrange sat down opposite a woman who was looking through a small book of manuscript paper. Intrigued, he asked if she was also a musician. ‘Not really!’ she replied but was on her way to lead a prison music group. The woman knew many excellent African and gospel music songs but had never led a singing workshop before and was rather nervous. L’Estrange offered to help, the woman shared her songs, and the composer immediately fell in love with the music. He decided that he wanted to write something that: ‘Captured the essence of the African spirit through glimpses of the human experience’. So, he wrote Zimbe! A collection of everything from children’s playground songs to raucous drinking songs; a lullaby from the mothers of the victims of Apartheid, wedding songs, protest, gospel, worship, and funeral music.

It would have been easy for Seaford Choral Society to play it safe for our first post-pandemic major choral work, but after two Covid-cautious concerts we are ready for a new challenge and Zimbe! is it. Most of us didn’t really know what we were letting ourselves in for when we turned up to the first rehearsal, and it was rather daunting. Much of the text is in Swahili, Zulu, Xhosa, Shona and Akan (languages of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Ghana), and as it’s a work for full-chorus, semi-chorus, children’s choir, jazz quintet and ‘copious percussion’, there are a lot of lines on the page. But after half an hour of singing, we were won over. It turns out singing in Swahili is not really any harder than singing in Latin or German, and apparently Hallelujah is Hallelujah in any language. Hallelujah! By the time you read this, we will have been practising hard for several more weeks, but it’s not too late to join us. It’s a big work and we need a big choir! So, if you’ve ever sung before and would like to get back into it, or if you’ve never sung before and want to give it a go – all are welcome. We are a friendly, non-audition choir who just love to sing (and eat biscuits in the tea break). And, as we are finding out, the beautiful African songs are easy to learn and impossible to forget. We also need a BIG AUDIENCE for our concert on Saturday 2nd July, so please put it in your diary and come along. We will be joined by Seaford Primary School Choir (who are also practising hard), a professional jazz quintet and all that ‘copious percussion’. Tickets are available from choir members and Newberry Tully Estate Agents. Details are on our website and Facebook page, where you can also message to buy tickets. Can Seaford really pull off a jazz choral work in Swahili? To be honest, we’re not really sure yet, but you’re going to want to be there to find out, right? Alison Mowbray

Pictures on the walls The local parish church in the tiny village of Berwick, St Michael and All Angels, contains murals that were painted in 1941 by the famous Bloomsbury artists Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell. The murals had been commissioned by Bishop George Bell of Chichester who wanted to revive the tradition of ecclesiastical murals. Before the reformation, many churches would have had their interiors extensively painted, and the Bishop had made no secret of a wish to establish a closer link between the Church and practising artists in his 1929 enthronement sermon at Chichester. And later he pointedly argued that ancient churches ‘must serve a living purpose, and in doing so, necessary changes must be introduced’. Bell was also keen to encourage proper employment for artists in the war years. The decorative scheme of paintings, all on wartime plasterboard panels, is now in urgent need of conservation. Sir Nicholas Serota, Chair of Arts Council England and former Director of the Tate, said: ‘… the remarkable decorative scheme in Berwick church is of national and even international importance. It is, critically, the only example in the country of the complete decoration of the interior of an ancient rural parish church by twentieth century artists of repute.’ A massive fundraising drive is underway to ensure their restoration and survival. They are, according to the campaign, a unique example of war art, and ‘record the landscape, the people and the way of life that was under threat’. Unlike many galleries, here you can get up close to the paintings. Now their remarkable story is to be told by the Rector of that church, the Rev. Peter Blee, when he delivers the next East Blatchington Lecture at St Peter’s Church in Seaford on Tuesday 7th June. He has written enviably of his church, where he has been priest since 2003. He modestly describes this as a guidebook, but it is much more than that, and is beautifully illustrated throughout.

The book is entitled The Bloomsbury Group in Berwick Church: The decorative scheme by Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell (£15 plus £3.50 p&p). But come to the lecture, which is open to all, and you can hear the story from the man who’s written it. This lecture is at St Peter’s in Belgrave Road, Seaford. Admission is £7, which includes tea and cake, and you can book by phone on 01323 899054, or by email officeebb.benefice@gmail. com. It starts at 2.30pm. The Platinum Jubilee; 1953 to today

Britain was just emerging from wartime rationing and Seaford would have been very bedraggled in 1953. There would still have been considerable bomb damage from the Second World War in various places. The Post Office and Police Station in Church Street would have been a bomb site, and the Champion Radio factory in Steyne Road had burned down in 1951. The Coronation was a splendid opportunity for the whole country to celebrate and try to forget their recent past. Looking back to the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, we have retrieved this poster from our archives showing the events planned in Seaford for the great day. Amongst many celebrations, there was the High Tea for

Clock Restoration Service

the Over 70s and of course, the Bonfire and Fireworks Celebration in the Martello Field at 10pm. As privately owned televisions were still something of a rarity, public television sets were were set up in five locations to allow the public to view the Coronation live – in black and white, of course. We have several events planned to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in Seaford Museum, including a Jubilee Craft Morning for children. This will be on Wednesday 1st June from 11am to 1pm, £3 per child, places will be very limited so please book via our website (www.seafordmuseum.co.uk). Over the Jubilee weekend itself, there will be special displays in the Museum on the theme of ‘70 Momentous Years’, and there will be a Discovery Trail for children around the Museum. The Museum will be open Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

Making history, we’d like your help! Dr Sally White, one of the Museum Mentors has a request. ‘We know that a number of schools in Seaford gave commemorative Coronation cups to their pupils in 1953, and we wondered if anyone in Seaford still has one of them.’ We’d also like you to share your memories of the Coronation itself. If you were around Seaford in 1953, we’d love to know what you remember about the events surrounding the great day. Perhaps you watched the Coronation live on one of those new-fangled television sets at the public displays. Image: Seaford celebrates. The 1953 Coronation poster.

ghost moth

A few years ago, as the sun set over the South Downs, I was wandering through a wood on a twilight hike. Through the trees I noticed about a dozen figures decked out in brilliant white gathering in a small clearing. I hit the floor and, buried amongst the bracken, watched as other white figures joined them. Each individual slowly started swaying, swinging hypnotically like a pendulum suspended on an invisible wire. The whole silent scene felt eerie, otherworldly, ancient. I was spellbound and barely breathing, scared I would be discovered and this mesmerising performance would end. As some of the figures swung fixed to their stations, others oscillated wildly, whirling and crashing into each other. The light was fading fast and as my surroundings dissolved into shadow; the swaying white figures seemed luminous against the

gloom. Then, as the full moon rose and illuminated the glade, the action slowed, the figures retreated and I was left alone in the gloaming. The ritual I had witnessed was the dance of the Ghost Moths: elaborate courtship behaviour performed by the males on warm summer evenings across Sussex. That moonlit glade had been temporarily transformed into a miniature moth disco where these incredible insects pirouetted, pranced, swaggered and strutted in an attempt to attract a female. More ‘Saturday Night Fever’ than ‘The Wicker Man’. And, like tiny Travoltas, the male Ghost Moths know that to stand out on a crowded dancefloor you need a flashy white suit. Their wings are whiter than white and look as though they have been hand-painted with Tipp-Ex. The female Ghost Moth has a more subdued wardrobe and wears pale yellow wings with elegant orange swirls. Males also have another trick up their sleeve (or in this case their trouser legs). Their hind legs contain furry scentbrushes, which release pheromones into the air like an overpowering aphrodisiac. Once the ladies are lured, it’s the individual moth’s dancing which seals the deal. It can be murder on the dancefloor, and scuffles start as the males try to assert their positions. It’s a behaviour known as ‘lekking’ and the dominant dancers will lead a lucky lady of the lek into the surrounding shadows. In days gone by the moth’s mysterious, ethereal waltz was interpreted as something supernatural, and it has been suggested that the dance of the Ghost Moth gave rise to local legends of fairies and Will-O-The-Wisps. If anything, the reality is just as magical and spellbinding to watch. Save seaford’s sWIFTS

The time has come for the swifts to return to the UK and some will be returning to their hometown of Seaford! As I write this, these birds are winging their way over land and sea... It is incredible to think how far these birds travel, year on year, and return to the place of their birth, in order to carry on the tradition of using OUR homes to nest and procreate. Some of you will be aware of this group, Save Seaford’s Swifts, which is affiliated with Seaford Natural History Society, and our aim to encourage residents to have swift boxes installed, where it is appropriate, at their home or places of work. Swifts need our help because too often now, they return to nest only to find their homes have been removed, which happens when houses are renovated, and ‘gaps’ are filled in, in the area beneath the eaves.

Quite a few natural history magazines are highlighting the serious decline in numbers of swifts over the last decade, so this is why we need to act now! As a nation, we need to work on this, but locally we are hoping to increase the numbers of swifts that scream above our town as they joyously communicate, socialise and breed. We are having some small successes, and a few residents have had swift boxes installed in recent months. They will no doubt be looking out at this time of year as the swifts return, and in the hope that a pair may locate their box and make it their home while they breed. Usually, it will take a few months or even more before they may take up residence in a new box, but apparently they will locate potential nesting sites and target them on their return. If you are interested in helping these birds and would like a box installed at your home or know of a likely location, then contact me and we can assess the potential suitability of the site. A drop of at least 4m–5m is required, preferably east or west facing and without any obvious obstructions such as a conservatory or nearby tree, so not every property is suitable. If you are someone who gets excited to see the swifts return year on year and would like to help these wonderful birds, we need someone like you to get involved in seeking out potential sites and liaising with residents. We also need to make contact with developers to encourage them to install swift bricks in new builds and in the long term we would like to see swift bricks become part of the design of new homes. This is not going to be a quick fix, but any help you can give will aid in the success of this project and in the recovery in the numbers of these amazing spirited birds, who deserve our respect and our help!

Trees for Seaford

Green light to GO!

A small group of Trees for Seaford volunteers met at Seaford Golf Club in April to be instructed on safety laws and liabilities that apply to working on public roads and footpaths. Although thorough risk assessments are always carried out prior to our tree works, it’s vital that all safety rules and procedures are applied correctly to protect both the workers and the public. One legal requirement is that at least one person on site must be qualified by attending this course and passing the certification tests. The course is ‘one size fits all’ – it’s the same whether you’re planting a tree on a quiet cul-de-sac, or putting in a new lane on the M25! So as well as knowing the correct signage to display when planting or caring for our trees, we had to learn how to set up temporary road works using signs, cones and traffic lights! A huge thank you to Seaford Golf club for loaning us their beautiful Firle room, and allowing us to set up

temporary traffic lights in their field! After an interesting discussion and lots of questions, all participants passed the tests and will receive certification. In other news, Trees for Seaford was delighted to receive a Mayor’s Award for our environmental and conservation work. Many thanks to all the volunteers who help us with this vital work! The ceremony in April was an inspiring opportunity to learn about the many volunteer groups in Seaford, and the incredible work they all do. Finally, we hope you’ve seen new trees popping up all around the town. Some are planted by our volunteers, but others are part of the Local Authority Treescape Fund, and planted by East Sussex County Council. All of these young trees need lots of care – so if you have a tree outside your house, or in your road, please keep an eye on it. If you can, please give it some extra water in dry weather (a bucket or watering can of water per week is ideal).

THE PROBUS CLUB OF SEAFORD At our most recent meeting our speaker was Adam Chugg, Town Clerk for Seaford Town Council. Adam explained that, in essence, the Town Council works for the betterment of Seaford and its residents. They have responsibility for certain aspects of the built and natural environment, such as Seaford Head, Crouch Gardens, the Martello Museum and The Salts. The Town Council owns and maintains Seaford Head Golf Club and The View Restaurant. During Lockdown there was very little activity here, but since the end of the restrictions the Golf Club seems to be thriving, and currently they have more members than ever. The Town Council works in conjunction with the Sussex Wildlife Trust to manage the nearby countryside, in respect of Wildlife Corridors, reduction in the use of

chemicals, encouraging indigenous plants and increasing natural diversity. The Town Council represents the town, from a very local viewpoint. Recently the Council has gone out to tender for a replacement toilet block, adjacent to the Martello Museum. They have recently completed the refurbishment of the Tennis Courts at the Salts, and have arranged for the cleaning of the War Memorial, showing respect for those named thereon. The Tree Planting programme continues, in association with local volunteers, in appropriate open spaces. The Town Council wishes to develop the Seafront, but in such a way as not to destroy the basic character of the area. They will seek to balance the need to enhance the seafront concessions with the need to maintain the tranquillity of the area, and to maintain safety for all users. The Town Council will continue to encourage key events in the town centre, but not to excess. The Town Council’s long-term aim is ‘more of the same’. This year there will be a number of ‘Beacon’ events, celebrating Her Majesty’s Jubilee. The Town Council is working with Historic England in investigations into the Iron Age Fort on Seaford Head, part of which was uncovered during a recent cliff fall. South Hill Barn has now been made waterproof in the expectation of greater use. Adam also reviewed the duties and functions of the various levels of local government. The District Council and County Council each have their own responsibilities. The Town Council can liaise with these bodies, but cannot always influence their decisions! Community Champion Recognised by Seaford Mayor Morrisons’ Community Champion, Sophie Carpenter, was presented by Mayor Rodney Reed with an award at the recently held Annual Town Forum. Sophie was nominated for the award of Supporting and Strengthening Local Charities by Brenda from charity Teddy Treats Children’s Charity. Sophie has been working with many Seaford- and Newhaven-based organisations and is always looking for more ways to help the community. If you’re involved with a local charity or community group please reach out to sophie.carpenter@morrisonsplc.co.uk. Sophie is quoted as saying: ‘I was overjoyed to just be nominated for the award. When the Mayor presented me with it I was absolutely stunned to have such a beautiful award given to me, and to be able to share the moment with my children, and show them just how much I care for our local community was an absolute joy.’

Why Selling Your Home Should Be a Team Effort If there’s one piece of property advice worth remembering, it’s this: be wary of anyone who tells you that selling a home is so easy that you should do it yourself. It takes a team with expertise and experience across various areas to make a successful sale happen. Not even the most creative multitasker has the skills to cover all the bases themselves. Here’s a list of who should be on your home-selling team.

Estate agent – A good agent knows Seaford’s

property market inside and out. And armed with this info, they can get the asking price right – not too high that it doesn’t generate interest, and not too low that you lose out financially. A good agent will use their experience of viewings and negotiations to get you the best possible deal on your largest tax-free asset.

Photographer – We use a local professional

photographer for our property marketing photos. Most viewers start their property search online and expect to see high-quality images.

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

Removal firm – On the day you complete, you’ll want the logistics to run smoothly – and for your treasured possessions to be handled with care. Again, we can help with recommendations.

Proactive seller – Sellers are vital members

of the team, too! A proactive seller rids their home of clutter so that it shines in the marketing photos, and keeps the property tidy for viewings. At Newberry Tully, we believe that selling a home is a team sport. So feel free to contact us to find out more about our collaborative approach.

Stephen and Andrew

Conveyancer/Solicitor – Once the sale

is agreed, you’ll need a good solicitor or conveyancer to handle the paperwork. Again, we can recommend excellent local ones.

Seahaven Hard of Hearing Club The May meeting of Seahaven Hard of Hearing Club was always an outing, and this was the first one since before Lockdown. Two minibuses took members to Fairwarp Village Hall where the local W.I. ladies provided us with an excellent tea. There was plenty of cake, sandwiches, tea and coffee, as well as a very welcoming and helpful ladies. I can heartily recommend this as a trip for other clubs. Our next social meeting is on Friday 6th June when the Seaford Strummers will be entertaining us at our Queen’s Jubilee party, along with games, chat, food and a raffle. Anyone who would like to join us, please ring Pauline on 01323 895216. The lipreading classes start their new term on 7th June at 10am, at Sutton Corner Barn (previously the 60+ club).
