Welcome to the first edition of our new magazine!

A special thank you to the Miller family for their purchase of our inaugural cover photo. Madi’s photo reveals the wonder, joy and creativity that has been the hallmark of Seacrest since its founding in 1983.

This is Seacrest’s 35th year and we are excited for the future of our school. When Norma and Lloyd Sheehan and Jane Kern founded Seacrest it was based on the determination that education was failing our children. The traditional educational model, created to support the needs of the industrial age, was “educating” creativity out of our children. Their educational days had become marathons of drudgery instead of sprints of creative energy and discovery. We are forever grateful for the vision of our school’s founders and we are committed to maintaining that progressive vision.

This edition of our magazine is also our Annual Report and on behalf of our Board of Trustees, our faculty and staff, and most importantly on behalf of our children and our alumni, I thank you for your important support of our school.

MEET OUR COVER KID!

Madelyn Miller, Grade 2, graces our first-ever Seacrest Magazine cover What’s better than the inaugural issue of Seacrest Magazine? Seeing one of our terrific students on the cover! Second grader Madelyn Miller earned the coveted spot when her parents, Andrew and Megan Miller, offered the winning bid during the live auction at last year’s Annual Auction: Havana Nights.

On a beautiful and steamy Southwest Florida night, Madelyn strutted her stuff at the Gordon River Greenway while Seacrest Fifth Grade teacher and professional photographer Mrs. Justyna Pohl snapped away.

When the shoot wrapped, we asked Madi a few questions to get to know her better.

The Seacrest Mock Trial team reached the finals of the annual Mock Trial Competition hosted by the Collier County Bar Foundation. Led by team captain Cameron Thorne (Class of 2017), the team argued a criminal court case and exemplified intelligence, sportsmanship and spirit of the law.

Seacrest Middle School student Emma Bookman won first place in the Daughters of the American Revolution Big Cypress Chapter essay contest.

Baseball player Matt Hurley (Class of 2018) helped defeat Keswick Christian in the Regional Finals as the Stingrays continued to the State Final Four. Seacrest fell to Deltona Trinity Christian in the State Semi-Final game 9 - 7 at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers.

Seacrest Middle and Upper School art teacher Mr. Michael Grandi and Faith Ferretti (Class of 2018) put the finishing touches on this award-winning submission into the Naples-Pelican Bay Rotary Club Chalk Art Fest held annually in downtown Naples.

The Class of 2017 flings their caps into the air after a beautifully moving commencement ceremony where seniors were celebrated for their compassion, academic achievements, and dedication to pursuing their passions. Kate Talano and Emma Minges (l – r) had nothing but smiles on the big day.

State finalists once again! The Seacrest Varsity Volleyball team made it to the 2016 State tournament for the third time in four years. Outside hitter Gem Grimshaw (Class of 2018) has already committed to playing at Temple University, a Division I program, after graduating from Seacrest.

Seacrest Head of School Mrs. Erin Duffy welcomes Mr. Joseph Balogh, Sr., a 96-year-old World War II veteran and his son, Mr. Joseph Balogh, Jr., to Grandparents and Special Friends Day. More than 200 visitors joined Seacrest for this lovely annual tradition.

Sean O’Reilly (Class of 2017) was recognized as a Semi-Finalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Seacrest’s Upper and Lower School robotics teams both celebrated milestones this year. The RoboRays competed for the first time in the FIRST® Robotics World Championship in Houston, Texas, while the Blue Rays (left) advanced to the semi-finals of the Seventh Annual FIRST® LEGO® League Global Innovation Award competition.

IDEA 35 Years of Seacrest: How Our Foundation Continues to Support Our Future

September 3, 1983 was more than just the first day of school for a small group of anxious young parents and their three- and four-year-old children. It was the first day of a school.

So begins the first chapter of a book called Inventing a School: Expanding the Boundaries of Learning. It was written by Dr. Jane Kern, who, along with visionary philanthropists Lloyd and Norma Sheehan, founded Seacrest Country Day School. Dr. Kern later became Seacrest’s first Head of School. The book, written in 1999, is still hugely relevant in our nation’s current challenging educational system. Dr. Kern explores Seacrest’s foundation and the qualities that set its mission apart from other schools who were quick to tap into trends and test scores as authentic measurements of learning. From creating a community of complex learners to inspiring teachers to fuel Creative Inquiry, the core of Seacrest’s initial mission remains as robust today as when those first sixteen pre-kindergartners walked through the school’s rented classroom space on the Unity Church property.

To celebrate Seacrest’s magical journey through 35 years and to honor how our school’s foundation continues to support our future, we have curated excerpts from Dr. Kern’s book that show how forwardthinking our founders, board members, teachers, and first parents and students really were. Subsequent Heads of School, Dr. Lynne Powell and Dr. John Watson, continued this mission with vigor, energy and an eye toward the future. It is because of their openness, courage, confidence, and adaptability that Seacrest has grown from its humble yet eager beginnings into a vibrant campus that welcomes hundreds of preschoolers through seniors into its community year after year.

“I knew it must be a school in which children would explore, experiment, create, and discover; where children would learn to respect and to help each other; where minds would be stretched

BEGINNINGS

“Today, more than ever before, everyone seems to have an idea about how to best educate our young; yet there is considerable confusion about how to make it happen. Certainly, parents want their children to receive the best education possible, but parents hold widely different views about what a good education means.

Information in textbooks reflects the pressures wielded by special interests groups. Political agencies call for reforms and national standards, with higher test scores as the objective. Business corporations have entered the educational arena, promising better results. Reforms, national agencies, and mandates from the top come and go with little substantive change.” p.xiii

and strengthened; where information would be experienced, touched, smelled, tasted, and then practiced.” p. 25 “If teachers are to inspire and empower learners, they must themselves be inspired and aware of their own greatness. As new grades were added throughout the years, I selected teachers who were confident in their abilities to facilitate learning, those who understood the processes involved in creating a dynamic, inspiring, and encouraging environment.” p. 52

EMERGING

“Seacrest was beginning its fourth year when we finally moved into our own, newly constructed building on Unity Way. The year was 1986, and so our new address was appropriately listed as 1986 Unity Way. It was a day that marked a significant event in the history of Seacrest.” p.79 “Children today view computers

as a natural part of their lives; they possess no fears or apprehensions when presented with a keyboard and a mouse. They usually ignore long, detailed instructions, and simply turn on the switch and figure it out for themselves, consulting with a partner when they need help. …

Our children, more than at any time in history, will need to be equipped with new ways to utilize information.” p.87 “I fully expected every teacher to provide a multi-sensory, interactive, interdisciplinary program, with purposeful, successful learning for all children.

In addition, I wanted students to be safe, well behaved, creative, independent, responsible, and academically motivated. Finally, I wanted them to be excited about learning.” p.131

LIFTING LIMITS

“From the outset, I wanted Seacrest to be a joint venture - a place where decisions are made through Seacrest Country Day School | FALL 2017

dialogue and consensus, shared responsibility, and team-building.

As a result, we all had to be willing to risk making mistakes and to learn from them. I grew and learned along with the faculty as we added new grades, new students, and new ideas.” p.164 “My search for a balanced blend of interconnected strands of teaching and learning became progressively focused whenever I took the time to stop what I was doing and center my attention on the teachers and the children to see how it all fit together. Like sorting through the different pieces of a puzzle, they fused together to portray a panorama of a unified system of learning.” p.179

GROWING

“During the summer of 1990, we began planning for the curriculum and staff for the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. We knew that the Seacrest Middle School would have to contain something more than the ordinary fare for this age group.” p.218 “You would think that after years of building additions to the Seacrest physical plant, I would have known that construction projects were destined to be delayed. In my mind, this time was going to be different. We had blueprints, an architect, and a building contractor. We had a construction loan in place, and we had money coming in from parents’ pledges for the building fund. … With the coming year in sight, we hired five new teachers and expanded our enrollment for five new classes of students, expecting that six new classrooms would be ready for the beginning of the new school year.” p.221 “Finally, in mid January, the construction … was finished.

Another milestone was

“Seacrest has preserved its rituals and its legacy as The School With a Heart. In coming of age, Seacrest has taken on a life of its own, as a living, breathing organism. Its insistence on creating whole minds and bodies with unlimited inner resources endures.” p.266 completed. Students and teachers were under one roof again, and Seacrest settled into a harmonious routine of action and adventure. The sixth and seventhgraders went on a three-day trip to the Atlantic Ocean for a hands-on study of marine ecology through the Marine Science Under Sails Program in Key Largo. … While other schools began thinking about involving students in community service projects, Seacrest classes continued and expanded community service programs as they had from the earliest years of the school.” p.224 “I received a phone call from Naples a few minutes after one o’clock on January 2, 1992, and in an instant, the secure and wellordered existence of Seacrest went into a tailspin. … The unexpected call was my first notice that anything was amiss with the financial matters of the person who had founded, funded, and built Seacrest. … Hanging up the phone, the truth of our position crystallized. Seacrest School was on its own.” p.229

CHANGING

“When new parents come, they are enthusiastically initiated into the rituals of Seacrest by our group of seasoned parents. They imbue the new ones with the importance of the rituals and before long, the new ones catch the spirit, recognizing the importance of celebrating the events that will

be imprinted on their children’s memories forever.” p. 259 “As the student population grew to 350, plans for new buildings were underway. The effects of expanded growth included results that were visible, measurable, and brilliantly executed.” p.266

Dr. Kern retired from her leadership role at Seacrest in 1993. Her inspirational vision and commitment to children’s potential led her to appoint Dr. Lynne Powell as the new leader of Seacrest Country Day School. Dr. Powell led our school through its greatest period of growth and rebuilding. From the Resource Center to the Lower School gym to the Lynn Marz Powell Student Services Building, our campus increased in size to accommodate an impressive increase in enrollment. In 2003, Dr. Powell and the Board of Trustees made a decision to add our Upper School.

The first 28 students began their Seacrest Upper School journey in August of 2004.

Dr. Powell retired in 2012 and Seacrest welcomed Dr. John Watson to continue the legacy begun by Dr. Kern.

The understanding of both the science and the “heart” of education that formed the core for Seacrest’s founding informs both the daily life of the school and its strategic vision. Thirty-five years later curiosity, creativity, and problem solving fuel our students. Their classrooms provide important bridges between passion and purpose. The Seacrest education is one of transformation; and Creative Inquiry, adopted as Seacrest’s core operating principle in 2017, provides us with an exciting way to explain “the Seacrest difference.”

CAMPUS CONNECTIONS: NEW FACULTY

Introducing Ms. Patricia Stanley, Head of Lower School Seacrest welcomes several other staff members for 2017-2018 school year

L. PATRICIA “TRISH” STANLEY - Head of Lower School

A new friendly face is greeting Lower School families this year. L. Patricia “Trish” Stanley has joined the Seacrest community as Head of Lower School where she will guide Preschool through fifth grades.

Ms. Stanley brings to her new role at Seacrest extensive experience, most recently as Head of School at The Mountain School at Winhall, a Pre-K through Grade 8 day school in southern Vermont.

Ms. Stanley’s enrollment, curriculum and technology initiatives helped The Mountain School at Winhall experience significant growth, improvement, and success during her tenure.

She holds a BA in English with a minor in music and a further concentration in environmental studies from Skidmore College, and an MS in Education from SUNY-New Paltz.

SHAELEA ALVAREZ

Shaelea Alvarez is not only a Seacrest alum, parent (to Harper in Kindergarten and Mattie in Preschool), and former student teaching intern, she is now a full-time Teaching Assistant in the Lower School. Ms. Alvarez will be assisting in both First Grade classrooms and the After-School Program this year. A recent graduate of Florida Southwestern State College with a bachelor degree in Middle Grades Language Arts, she aspires to be a full-time English teacher. “I love getting to know my students,” she says. “Their personalities are unique and special.” In her free time, Ms. Alvarez loves to create art, write poetry, and be a mom to her two daughters.

CAMPUS CONNECTIONS: NEW FACULTY

MARC BARRY - Upper School Mathematics and Robotics

A veritable jack of all math and engineering trades, Marc Barry actually joined Seacrest in the fall of 2016 as a long-term substitute. Mr. Barry soon became involved in the robotics program and led the team to its greatest success to date, traveling to the FIRST World Championship in Houston in April 2017. A Program Director with the Boy Scouts of America since 1987, Mr. Barry was a math teacher in the Lee County School District from 2012-2016. Mr. Barry holds a BS in Secondary Education: Mathematics from Idaho State University, and is currently working on his Master’s at FGCU.

REBECCA BEST - Middle School and Upper School Instrumental Music

An accomplished flutist and pianist, Rebecca Best comes to Seacrest from Cape Fear Academy, an independent day school in Wilmington, North Carolina. Ms. Best founded the instrumental program at Cape Fear in 1988 and built it into a wide-ranging music program that includes jazz band, pep band and numerous chamber groupings. She introduced music theory courses to Cape Fear and has been an AP Music Theory test reader since 2008. Ms. Best has a BA and BS from the University of North Carolina – Wilmington where she majored in flute performance and minored in piano performance.

She holds a Master’s degree in Music Education from Boston University.

JEFFREY BINDER

Seacrest welcomes accomplished Broadway and television actor and director Jeffrey Binder to the Theatre Department this year. Mr. Binder is the Associate Artistic Director for the Gulfshore Playhouse and has appeared in The Lion King, Mary Poppins, and Side Man on Broadway and on TV in Damages and Law and Order, among many other roles. A master of fine arts graduate from New York University, Mr. Binder lives in Naples with his partner and daughter who is in Ms. Burchett’s Kindergarten class.

PATRICIA DAUGHERTY

Born and raised in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Patricia “Patchi” Daugherty played volleyball at Florida Gulf Coast University on an NCAA Division I scholarship and is a former United States Volleyball Association Beach Volleyball High-Performance Manager. She earned a bachelor’s degree in resort and hospitality management at FGCU before receiving her master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University - Irvine (Cal.). Ms. Daugherty will have one of the toughest jobs on campus - as the Assistant to both Mr. Caruso in the Middle School and Mr. Schott in the Upper School.

This is in addition to her other role at Seacrest as Co-Head Coach of the Middle School Volleyball team with Mrs. Turner. Ms. Daugherty is married and has one daughter.

CAMPUS CONNECTIONS: NEW FACULTY

MICHELLE ENGLISH - Administrative Assistant

Michelle English joined Seacrest this fall as a new Administrative Assistant and divides her time and responsibilities between The Skills Center and the Front Desk. She grew up in Chicago but moved to Naples in her early 20s to be closer to family. Her resume is extensive, having worked in a number of private golf clubs in membership and marketing roles before running Project Help, a local rape crisis center. Ms. English says she learned about Seacrest many years ago while attending an Odyssey of the Mind fundraiser and fell in love with the school’s philosophy.

LISA FEDERICO - Middle School and Upper School Choral Music

Choral music and music theatre have been Lisa Federico’s passion since her childhood in Cleveland, Ohio. Ms. Federico earned her bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Performance from Heidelberg University and has studied performance at Ohio State University, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Willoughby Fine Arts School. She was a music teacher in Collier County Public Schools for 22 years, Music Director for KidzAct at the Sugden Theater for 13 years, and is the Music Director at Cornerstone United Methodist Church. As a performer, Ms. Federico has performed for many years with Opera Naples, the Naples Concert Band, The Naples Players, and the Philharmonic Chorale. Her favorite role, though, is being mom to Joseph and Frankie.

JOHN HEERS

A former History Department Chair at Seacrest, John Heers returns this year after working full-time as the Executive Director of the First Things Foundation, which he co-founded with Mr. Ryan Jobe, Seacrest Director of Enrollment Management. Mr. Heers studied history and political science at Rippon College in Wisconsin and earned a master’s degree from Columbia University in New York City. At Seacrest, Mr. Heers will be collaborating within the Center for Creative Inquiry, teaching two Upper School sections of world history, and instructing the senior capstone seminar, Agape. “This is my favorite class ever and the kids like it a lot,” says Mr. Heers. A married father of six, Mr. Heers also served the Peace Corps in Mali, Africa for nearly three years early in his career.

CHRISTOPHER KEELER

After nearly a decade teaching English at various international schools in South Korea, Christopher Keeler is happy to be back in the United States as a new full-time Teaching Assistant in PreK and the After-School Program. A graduate of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, Mr. Keeler relocated to Southwest Florida with his wife this summer to be closer to his family. He and his wife, Tazz, celebrated their marriage with a traditional South Korean ceremony. Fun fact about Mr. Keeler: he once bicycled from Connecticut to Asheville, North Carolina with just a backpack and a tent “for adventure!”

CAMPUS CONNECTIONS: NEW FACULTY

MEGAN MCCOMBS

Megan McCombs began her professional theatrical career by playing Cleopatra in Caesar and Cleopatra when she was sixteen. This year, she will be helping Seacrest’s young thespians in the Theatre Department. Ms. McCombs has performed in over 40 plays from Shakespeare to farce in venues all across the country and in New York City. A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, Ms. McCombs was the Education Associate of the Gulfshore Playhouse in Naples and also the KidzAct Director at the Naples Players for more than a decade.

KRISTIN NORKELIUNAS - Lower School First Grade Teacher

Think of the Mickey Mouse song when you say Kristin Norkeliunas’ (NOR-kuh-loo-niss) last name. “That’s how I teach my students to learn it,” says Seacrest’s newest First Grade teacher. Ms. Norkeliunas was graduated from Florida Southern College in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and is pursuing her master’s degree there as well. She taught first grade at Royal Palm Academy the previous two years and says she always dreamed of becoming a teacher. “I’m the oldest of four and I used to make all my siblings play school with me,” says Ms. Norkeliunas. “I think it’s because my mom is a teacher, too.”

BARBARA OAKLEY

Barbara Oakley joins Seacrest as the After-School Program Coordinator after an elementary school teaching career spanning more than three decades. Originally from the Cleveland, Ohio area, Ms. Oakley earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at Ohio University. She moved to Naples in 2004 after retiring, but swiftly fell back into full-time teaching through the public school system, VPK, and homeschooling. Ms. Oakley craved a part-time position, though, and welcomed this opportunity at Seacrest. “It’s perfect,” she says. “I’ve always thought Seacrest an intriguing school and it’s a lovely campus.” When not at Seacrest, you can find Ms. Oakley on the tennis court or golf course.

JENNIFER TOWNSEND - Lower School Second Grade Teacher

After student teaching in Mrs. Maranto’s PreKindergarten class during the 2016-2017 school year, Jennifer Townsend has officially joined Seacrest as a Lower School Second grade teacher. Jennifer attended St. Elizabeth Seton School for elementary and middle school and St. John Neumann High School. She then went on to the University of Central Florida in Orlando for two years and finished her college experience at Florida Gulf Coast University earning a BA in Early Childhood Education (PreK – Grade 3). Jennifer has also received reading and ESOL endorsements. Before Seacrest, Jennifer was a preschool teacher at First Presbyterian Preschool for seven years. JACLYN TRAINA - Seacrest Lower School Teaching Assistant and Co-Head Softball Coach

Born and raised in Naples, Jaclyn Traina is happy to return to her roots and join Seacrest as a Lower School Teaching Assistant this year. Ms. Traina was a pitcher on the USA Softball National team for four years and played professionally for two years in the Japanese league Denso, before taking a coaching position at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire last year. She brings her expertise on the mound to Seacrest this year as an Assistant Softball Coach. Ms. Traina graduated with a degree in social work from the University of Alabama in 2014 where she led the Crimson Tide in its first softball National Championship.

eing a working parent is tough.

Balancing work schedules with the chaos of children’s sporting events, recitals, after-school jobs or playdates - not to mention finding time to relax with family and friends - is a never ending challenge.

Seacrest knows how hard our parents work to be involved and engaged members of our community, but we also recognize that you simply may not have enough time to volunteer at or participate in activities at Seacrest.

So, instead of asking you to find time to fit into our community, the Seacrest Parent Association is adapting to your life. At the end of the 2016-2017 school year, Seacrest’s current S.P.A. advisory group in conjunction with the Board Advancement team reimagined the S.P.A. to be more inclusive and to provide meaningful and purposeful ways for parents to re-engage with our community.

We are dedicating an entire room to our volunteers! Room 5 in the Lower School will have a coffee bar, a weekly list of opportunities, meeting places, and a children’s corner for future Stingrays. This Volunteer Room is your space to communicate, collaborate, and cooperate on projects, events, and Room Parent responsibilities. DEBRA LARSEN HUBER (not pictured) grew up in Boise, Idaho, the third of ten children. She graduated cum laude from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in English.

Debra and her husband, David, have five children and nine grandchildren.

Their youngest child, Jamison, was graduated in 2016 from Seacrest where he served as student body president. He started Seacrest in third grade and had a remarkable educational experience.

Debra is co-chair of the David and Debra Larsen Huber Family Foundation that focuses on education. David received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Brigham Young University. He founded two telecommunications companies, Ciena Corporation and Corvis Corporation.

Debra currently serves on the National Advisory Board of the Sydney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and on the Board of Trustees at Southern Virginia University.

KAREN R. TOLCHIN, PH.D., is an associate professor of English at Florida Gulf Coast University. Her fields include Contemporary American Literature, Film, and Creative Writing. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College, she later earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from Brandeis University.

Tolchin is the author of Part Blood, Part Ketchup: Coming of Age in American Literature and Film (2007). A new hybrid memoir/parenting guide titled Stop Parenting: One Helicopter Mom’s Life-Changing Transformation has just been released. A regular contributor to Gulfshore Life Magazine, Tolchin is co-founder and president of the DeKa Storytelling Institute, L.L.C..

Her other board affiliations include the Sanibel Island Writers Conference (founding member) and the Southern Humanities Council.

Tolchin lives in Naples, Florida, where she enjoys reading memoirs and novels, checking out new movies, shops, and restaurants, doing arts and crafts as a Seacrest Room Mom, and—most of all—boating and swimming in the Gulf of Mexico with her son Charlie.

KEVIN HAWKESWORTH is currently the President and CEO of Shaw Development, LLC. Under Kevin’s leadership, Shaw Development has quadrupled in revenue, employees and capacity.

Shaw Development’s Board of Directors elected Kevin in 2016. He also serves as the Vice-Chair on the Board of Directors for the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association. Kevin is an active member of the Southwest Florida Regional Economic Development Alliance, served on the Horizon Council, and is a past chair of the Regional Southwest Florida Manufacturers Association.

Kevin received his undergraduate degree from Hofstra University and earned his Masters of Public Administration (MPA) at the University of Connecticut, where he graduated with distinction.

Kevin is a member of Tiburon Golf Club and Commanderie de Bordeaux á Naples. With his wife, Pamela, Kevin serves on the Parent Leadership Council at Tufts University and, separately, on the President’s Parent Council at Drexel University. Kevin lives in Naples with his wife and has three children.

KRIS WORTHINGTON believes one can always find a quick sense of community by volunteering within local schools. She has served on countless PTO boards, activities committees, and chaired events, including serving as the Co-Chair and Chair of the Seacrest Annual Auction from 2015-2017.

Kris attended college at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. She and her husband, John, have four children, Spencer, Luke, Kelly, (Seacrest Class of 2016) and Abby (Seacrest Class of 2018).

Kris currently serves as President of the Southwest Florida Young Women Organization for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She enjoys spending time with her family here in Naples, and in Bethany Beach, Delaware and Lake Tahoe, California.

LOWER SCHOOL Hello Lower School Families,

W

hen I first visited Seacrest, I was instantly struck by what a wonderful place it is and the sense of community that exists among students, faculty, staff, and families. The school enticed and intrigued me, as it shares many common qualities with my recent former schools in Connecticut and Vermont, Indian Mountain and The Mountain School, respectively. When I was invited to join the Seacrest community, I saw an opportunity to work at a unique, creative school with dedicated administrators, teachers and truly wonderful students. A school where faculty and families are committed to fostering a safe and happy environment, promoting student inquiry and thoughtfulness, as well as preserving childhood. I have already met many of you and am excited to meet more of you in the months ahead. I want to let you know about some wonderful things happening in the Lower School this year.

At the start of the school year, the talented Lower School faculty welcomed two new fulltime teachers, some new assistant teachers for the younger grades. Several teachers are teaching different grades this year. Some strategic room shuffles have also taken place. This gave us the opportunity over the summer to paint, refresh, reorganize, and present new room setups for all of our Lower School classrooms. The teachers have said they love the newly painted classrooms and are enthusiastic and truly excited to redesign their classroom configurations. In fact, eight Lower School teachers took time in July to collectively participate in a fascinating webinar titled The Learning Environment that focused on innovative classroom set up and student partnership.

We have added new technology to our Lower School program that will enhance students’ learning and move forward Seacrest’s focus on Creative Inquiry. This integration better serves our healthy balance of experiential,

collaborative learning lead by teachers and students with increasing technological skills.

Preschool through 2nd grade classrooms are equipped with new 50” screens with Apple TV systems, along with more access to our school’s pool of iPad Minis. Teachers and students are able to project, share and manipulate programs, activities, presentations, and more onto these classroom screens.

Students in 3rd through 5th grades also have new 50” screens with Apple TV systems in their classrooms, along with a set of new generation iPads and additional laptops for 4th and 5th graders to check out for classroom use. Teachers have new iPads, too, and can access many valuable programs and offer lively interactive examples as they teach and facilitate the Creative Inquiry process for children.

As a teacher and administrator, I have enjoyed exploring the intersection of child development, forward-thinking school practices, and many types of learning environments. The caring and creative philosophy of Seacrest Country Day School lays a strong foundation for employing best practices in all three of these areas. I am eager to continue working with faculty and parents committed to collaborating with each other and with me so that children can experience a challenging academic program balanced with creativity, good character development, and joy in learning. There are many outstanding aspects to the established Lower School programs, and many new ideas to explore and implement. I have no doubt that, together, we will foster students who excel because of the strong foundations in critical and creative thought they receive in their early years.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dear Seacrest Community,

A

lthough the beginning of the school year started with a large hurdle named Hurricane Irma for our families, students, staff, and campus, our Middle School students remain with similar energy and enthusiasm they possessed on the first day of school. The classrooms are noisy and busy with conversation on global issues in Ms. Rich’s geography class, students searching for the correct formula in Mr. Karp’s Algebra class, or working through a physics problem in science with Ms. McLaughlin. The afternoons are filled with excitement as the student-athletes do their best to stay focused on school as they anticipate their afternoon soccer game.

We are busy in the Middle School, but we are paying close attention to the balance of life and friendships and experiences that are the hallmarks of these transformative years.

We strive for our Middle School students to experience life at Seacrest to its fullest in a fashion that allows for quality family time, a healthy adolescence, and meaningful learning in and out of the classroom. I am often impressed with how well our students handle the pace and challenges inherent to life in the Middle School.

The recent Student Led Conferences were an opportunity for our students to organize their goals for the school year and share them in a thoughtful manner with their parents. I was impressed with how diligently our students and teachers prepared for the conferences and I am proud of the ownership the students displayed throughout the process. We are very pleased with the school wide shift in our approach to Student Led Conferences as this

format engages our students and compels them to claim ownership of their education.

The 8th graders have comfortably transitioned into the leaders of the Middle School and will be challenged in numerous ways during our upcoming trip to the Blue Ridge Assembly in North Carolina. It is an incredible learning and growing experience, individually and collectively, that will be forever in their middle school memories.

The deliberate and numerous leadership opportunities the 8th graders encounter are integral to their preparation for the transition to the Upper School.

Each year the school year seems to go by faster and faster. I have to remind myself to make the most of each opportunity and not miss the events I have circled on my calendar.

It is perfectly acceptable and encouraged to ignore the advice we often hear from our children to skip a play or presentation or an athletic contest because “it’s not a big deal”. I promise you they will notice when we are there and be quietly, disappointed if we are absent.

It has been great seeing the parent volunteers on campus since the beginning of school. The energy the community has brought toward the numerous volunteer opportunities organized through the Seacrest Parent Association is noticed and appreciated.

The students, teachers and I thank you for your time and the enthusiasm. We are grateful for your commitment to Seacrest.

UPPER SCHOOL Academic Connections

W

hen you ask Seacrest Upper School teachers to declare the most important subject of study, they will surely assert that theirs is the most vital and necessary. After all, science teachers view life based on the natural phenomena occurring around us, historians see the world through the lens of past events, and mathematicians search for patterns wherever they go.

At the same time, teachers know that segmenting branches of learning into distinct disciplines, while long-established, ignores the essential connections between fields that create profound knowledge and understanding.

For instance, mathematics and mathematical thinking play a role across the curriculum, in everything from understanding the physics of motion to creating perspective in art to analyzing trends in economic policy.

Over the years, Seacrest teachers from different departments have teamed up to great effect. They plan to create even more formal and sustained collaborations in the future. The Visual Arts and Science departments designed a project focused on anatomy and illustration.

Science teacher Doc Siminovsky asked art teacher Michael Grandi to help create assignments that required students to view the inner workings of the human body from perspectives they would not typically consider.

Says Doc, “When you have to illustrate the intricate detail of the thoracic system by hand, you understand it in a way you never could just by memorizing its parts. My students created such amazing pictures that even I saw my own subject in a new way.�

Seacrest Alum Making Waves in Art World Reisha Perlmutter (’08) mesmerizes critics and fans alike with hyper-realistic underwater paintings As a Kindergartner at Seacrest, Reisha Perlmutter dreamed of becoming an artist. By her own admission, she was independent. Fiery. Creative.

Thrilled by challenges and excited by the unknown. If that sounds self-aware, that’s because Reisha was, and still is, perhaps even more so now as a 27-year-old renowned New York City-based artist. “A lot of that has to do with my personality. I’m never satisfied with where I am,” she says. “But the foundation at Seacrest, where they value students who seek their own independence and learning, really allowed me to flourish. I was never put into a box.”

The box that Reisha works on these days in her 1200 square foot Williamsburg, Brooklyn

loft is covered in canvas.

For the past two years, she’s crafted a series of hyperrealistic oil paintings depicting women in water. In many of the paintings, she is also the subject. Reisha’s original works command upwards of $20,000 per painting. This fall, one of her underwater paintings will be auctioned off at Sotheby’s during the Take Home a Nude Art Party and Auction, a gala event chaired by the likes of Caroline Kennedy, Jimmy Buffett, Lorne Michaels, and art-world heavyweight Amy Cappellazzo.

The auction benefits the New York Academy of Art, where Reisha earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. After she was graduated from Seacrest in 2008, Reisha attended Bates College in Maine for two years before transferring to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, where she received her undergraduate degree in Fine Arts, with a focus on painting.

Residency painting and drawing programs in Italy and France round out her early educational experiences.

Reisha credits Seacrest with embracing her passion and talent for art, while also

challenging her to intellectually and emotionally figure out who she was at the time and who she wanted to become.

She has high praise for Mr. John Heers, her former history teacher who has returned to Seacrest this year in a new role.

Reisha is especially grateful to Mr. Howard Schott, her former English teacher who is now the Head of Upper School. “He was born to be a teacher just like I was born to be a painter,” says Reisha. “He was always so passionate and devoted to his students. He gave us the gift of education, which I really think is the ultimate gift.”

If Reisha’s impact in the art world and influence on social media are any indication (and her 161K followers on Instagram says that they are), she has definitely found her gift.

Jessica will complete her practice work at the inpatient psychiatric unit at the Miami VA Healthcare System as well as at the Federal Correctional Institution, also in Miami. Jessica wants to work as a psychologist within an inpatient or correctional setting. n James Meyers writes he is “defending freedom, spreading democracy, and eliminating terror as a naval officer in Charleston, South Carolina where he lives with fellow Seacrest alum Nicholas Bodell. He is a consultant working primarily for the chemicals industry, but also writes he is starting his own business with his brothers and a college friend. The last time Alexander was in Naples he got together with “T”, Alex Tenreiro, also from the Class of 2008. n Jana Elisabeth Schulze is completing her last year of medical school in Tübingen, Germany. She connected with Jessi Bryant the last time she was in the U.S. n Daniel

“Dani” Jalali is in Orlando where he works in media production and plays shows mostly around Florida in his band, Bubble Boys. At press time, he said, “I got to play shows with a bunch of my fave bands, which is cool. Like last week I played with Sheer Mag from Philadelphia and next month we’re playing with GG Allin’s original backing band, Murder Junkies. Also, we’re playing with Jacuzzi boys, which I am very excited about. They’re getting featured in Orange is The New Black and playing Burger Bugaloo with names like Iggy Pop and filmmaker John Waters. So that’s pretty cool.”n JoyNoël E. L. Elett is now primarily known as Joy Elett for her work in Los Angeles, California where she is a full-time sound designer and sound effects editor. Joy mostly works on animated TV shows with the occasional feature

Joy’s team recently got nominated for a Golden Reel Award for our sound effects editing on BoJack Horseman earlier this year. She was also nominated last year for her work in an indie horror film. Joy ran into Charles Brock a while ago; “It was so nice to see him and catch up a bit!” n Elena Urbani lives in Athens, Greece and is a jack-of-alltrades at her husband’s advertising company. But most exciting for her is that she had a baby named Danae!

Calvin’s plans for the future are simple; to continue his steady career and make enough money to retire early and move to a private island! n Kate Workman is currently in a Master of Science Program in Nutrition Science at Columbia. She is passionate about “food as medicine,” and is interested in pursuing a career at the intersection of the fields of nutrition, healthcare, and wellness to promote health and well-being. Kate believes Seacrest instilled in her a profound and personal love of learning and problem solving.

earned a degree in Global Affairs from Yale University in 2016. She is now the program coordinator for the Women’s Foundation of Southwest Florida and is working to raise awareness about human trafficking and the hurdles to combating the problem. She’s also been traveling with stops in Ireland, Nicaragua, and Hong Kong. Charlotte will work with the Women’s Foundation until July and then plans on traveling in Latin America for a year while doing some part-time remote work for SWFL nonprofits. n Dan Ferrao is currently in the graduate school of accounting at Notre Dame University, where he also earned his undergraduate degree. He says, “Seacrest taught me that everyone has their own strengths; taught me to ask ‘why’; and taught me personal relationships with your peers are paramount.” Dan was also the alumni guest speaker at Seacrest’s 2017 Annual Auction. n Kerrie Durham lives in Hong Kong on a mountain called The Peak. She is working as a junior developer for a startup company named Quottly.

When Kerrie is not at work she likes to hike around the mountains of Hong Kong. She also spends her time working on programming projects because she hopes to go to graduate school for computer science. n Hana Sladick is pursuing her Master of Public Health at Tulane University in New Orleans, La. She is working for Health Care for the Homeless, a subsidiary of the New Orleans Health Department, as Program Manager for a Uniformed Patient Referral System. Hana will stay in New Orleans after she graduates to finish the evaluation of the referral system and continue her career in public health. n Victoria Griffiths is in her second year of medical school in Limerick, Ireland.

Her current interest is pediatrics, however she is “open to learning about the other specialties during clinical rotations around Ireland in the upcoming years,” she says. Victoria hopes to pass the Canadian and American board exams so she will be eligible to return home to North America to practice in about three years. Cheers from across the pond!

his first four years at the University of Pennsylvania and is looking forward to attending law school at University of Michigan. John will be moving to Ann Arbor and is excited to find the perfect experience to develop his legal skills and discover what kind of attorney he wants to be. n William Luer currently attends Washington University in St. Louis where he will be pursuing his Masters in Computer Science. On campus Will is involved with a research team developing a small 3D printed autonomous vehicle. He also is a teaching assistant for a course called Introduction to Engineering and Design. n The past few months have been busy, says Gus Joseph. He was graduated from the University of Florida and moved to Austin, Texas to be a technology consultant at Accenture. Yet all of these changes pale in comparison to getting his new puppy, Ori. Gus says, “I’m looking forward to getting to know Austin and making new friends in this strange new state of Texas.”

Erickson attends Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is a standout swimmer. He competed in the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving National Championships. Dane also earned Academic All-Conference honors by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference.

n Andrew LeMay recently wrapped up standardized examinations for graduate school and will be applying to Occupational Therapy programs across Wisconsin in the coming months. He is a research assistant in the Parasitology Lab at St. Norbert College (also in Wisconsin) and serves as a mentor to first-year scholar-athletes.

Andrew is competing in his fourth season of Cross Country and Track this year and will be graduated in May 2018 with a degree in Biology and a concentration in Biomedical Sciences. He says, “I’ve come to realize how incredibly valuable my time at Seacrest was and I look forward to the next time I am able to come down and visit!”

CLASS NOTES critically, and striving always for deeper understanding. n Sydney Richards was a shining star in the graduating class of 2015. She has always had a love for theater and finally gets to live her dream. Sydney will be playing the principal role of Pippa in the new musical Abduction.

Abduction is a musical comedy about an alien abduction in a small Indiana town. This will be Sydney’s first professional production. n Tori Davis and Trey Brown Tori Davis and Trey Brown were graduated together in 2015. They became engaged with a toy red diamond ring in fifth grade on the playground. A dozen years later, Trey Brown proposed, for real this time, on the same swing set from fifth grade. Trey now attends Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia where he is a member of the swimming team. Tori is close by at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. They plan on marrying when Trey finishes college. n Jacki Forgione is pursuing a B.S.B.A in International Business at High Point University in North Carolina with a double minor in French and Finance. She recently interned at Fengate Capital, a real asset investment company in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Along with her internship, she is also a brand ambassador for Little Words Project, a beaded bracelet company in New Jersey. She updates its social media and hosts events to promote its products. She is also a writer for a fashion and lifestyle blog. Lastly, Jacki is still a competing equestrian.

She took summer courses in order to take the upcoming spring semester off in hope of qualifying for the Canadian National Show Jumping Team. n Gustavo Grinstein studied the impact of Brexit in the United Kingdom over the summer as part of Lehigh University’s Martindale Center for the Study of Private Enterprise.

REVS is a car museum that studies vintage automobiles. He primarily volunteers in the galleries engaging guests and discussing the cars and their significance. n Emily Hancock attends Berry College in Rome, Georgia where she plays Division III Volleyball. CLASS NOTES tournaments and experience Brazilian life. n Madison Cilk studies at the University of Vermont and is double majoring in Political Science and Environmental Studies. Madison recently traveled to the Netherlands where she interned at the London Headquarters of the Marine Stewardship Council. She also interned with the Vermont Council on World Affairs. n Brittany Merrell is currently studying at Florida State University and majoring in Psychology. Brittany says, “Seacrest gave me leadership skills and the courage that I needed to transition to the larger school environment at Florida State.” n Benjamin Loos writes he is working toward his major in Psychology at Lynn University in Boca Raton. One of the highlights of his freshman year at college was attending Halloween Horror Nights

at Universal Orlando Resort with 26 friends. He also hosted a prospective student at Lynn. Benjamin reconnected with Seacrest alumni friends at the Jeffrey Ortiz Memorial Softball game last spring. n Alex Farrow started his second year at the University of Florida as a Division I Diver for the Swimming and Diving team. In February 2017 the team won the NCAA Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship and Alex earned this incredible ring. Later the team placed 3rd NCAA Division I Championship. n Blake Burchett spent his summer working for a tech camp called iD Tech. He spent seven weeks in Miami teaching kids to build and program robots with Lego Mindstorms. “It was a lot of fun, and the kids learned a lot,” he says.

Blake is still attending the University of Florida.

past May, Shelly Westervelt went to Peru for ten days in June, where she hiked The Lares Trail and Machu Picchu’s 2,000 steps. She also helped build a roof for a Peruvian family. “This was a once in a lifetime experience that prepared me for my journey to come (college) and inspired me to share my experiences (through my blog,” she says. Since Peru, she has been attending the University of Florida.

She also created a Health and Wellness blog that she first began in an independent study at Seacrest during her senior year.
