Mira Mesa Lanes provides a relaxing bowling sanctuary

By Colleen McNatt (Mira Mesa) In bowling, there are certain etiquette and rules to abide by when attempting to play this centuries-old sport.

So it is at Mira Mesa Lanes, 8210 Mira Mesa Blvd. – one of the few remaining bowling alleys in the entire county.

A bowling alley is not a free-for-all field like at the neighborhood park, but it is a family-friendly sanctuary where people can gather for fun or competitive sport. It gets pretty intense when school groups visit the bowling center: kids sprinkled throughout the lanes, balls dropping in the wrong places. Once you learn the do’s and don’ts of bowling, muscle memory kicks in, rules are followed and players become hooked.

Saturdays are the busiest days at Mira Mesa Lanes.

Youth bowlers ages 3-17 occupy the property in the morning and formal leagues started again in September.

The Junior Elite programs offer competition, comradery and college scholarships. Adult leagues are the bread and butter at Mira Mesa Lanes, with 21 teams currently registered.

This is at reduced capacity since the bowling alley is

not open until 1 p.m. due to COVID-19 restrictions and staffing challenges.

A new generation of bowling enthusiasts include students from UCSD, mostly from word-of-mouth. Local military families visit Mira Mesa Lanes in large turnouts, many with their own gear, and dominate with their bowling experience from other deployments.

“Cosmic bowling,” with strobe lights and old school disco balls bring an influx of customers on the weekends.

Bowling alleys are an endangered entity. Mira Mesa Lanes is now the only fullscale bowling center within San Diego city limits – with 44 lanes. Real estate offers shuttered Poway Fun Bowl and Kearny Mesa Bowl during the pandemic. Mira

Mesa Lanes, then a sister entity with Kearny Mesa Bowl, was facing closure before pro bowler Missy Parkin, her husband Drew and a silent investor saved the 50-year-old mainstay.

The Parkins live in Orange County. Drew visits the center often throughout the week. Missy travels on the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) tour and is one of the world’s top seeds. Their three-year-old son has already visited 29 different states as his mother competes on the PWBA circuit.

But you don’t have to be a pro to check out a bowling center. Gutter balls, in which the bowling ball misses any pins and travels down the side, are okay and accepted. For novices, there is even a group at Mira Mesa Lanes called “Lousy Bowlers.”

Collins Family Jewelers celebrates its 43rd anniversary

O

n a recent Friday morning, the employees of Collins Family Jewelers convened in-person for their first staff meeting since the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020. There was much to talk about and celebrate.

This month marks 43 years in business, and in the same Mira Mesa shopping center for the duration.

Four decades ago, the shop inhabited 400 square feet and featured stamps and coins. Through the years, the business transformed into a full-service jewelry store with 3,000 square feet of elbow room, located at 8220 Mira Mesa Blvd.

Not too many enterprises can claim that, yet owners Bill and Cynthia Collins and their team of daughters, son-in-law, four jewelers and coveted staff are recognizing how far they have come since the store had to close in March 2020 for over two months.

Cynthia, who met Bill in 1979 while waiting on a tow rope skiing in Big Bear, is healing from breast cancer and a double mastectomy from just more than one year ago. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day

More milestones have occurred during the pandemic.

“COVID gave us permission to change our paradigms,” Cynthia said, explaining how the importance of family values was a focus for her employees and the future of their business. “We had to be creative to survive.”

Each of the Scripps Ranch couple’s five daughters have worked at the business in some capacity since they turned 16. Today, four daughters, ranging in age from 19 to 37, work in the store. Their business hours are now Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Customers visiting the store are immediately greeted as the front door is opened for them by one of the employees.

owns all of their goods and inventory, and with on-site jewelers, including one senior jeweler, customers do not have to wait for out-

sourcing or longer delays with shipping or repairs. An office space was completely remodeled for a nursery, so the Collins’ grandchildren

can accompany their parents to work with ease.

As a brick-and-mortar family enterprise, Collins Family Jewelers has no online store. They still don’t have one, by design, listening to how their customers shop for their jewelry needs.

When the store was closed for more than two months in 2020, the Collins’ eldest daughter Briana had time to devote to their Instagram presence. Last year, the store had 800 followers on Instagram. Today, there are more than 7,000 followers @collinsfamilyjewelers.

Briana posts daily on Instagram and has increased her photography and marketing skills to reach customers all over the world who are looking for that one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. She has branched out with TikTok videos, too. Now, more than 20 percent of the customers of Collins Family Jewelers comes from social media, with only one request for a return, Briana said.

Throughout the month of October, to celebrate their 43 years of longevity in business, customers can receive 15 percent off estate jewelry or an additional 10 percent off existing inventory.

PowPAC survives COVID and roars back

(Poway) The Poway Performing Arts Company (PowPAC) is a community theatre that has been around for more than 40 years. This summer the theatre bounced back and is performing again in its first season returning after the pandemic.

“We were just four days away from opening for a show, ‘Murder on the Nile,’ when everything shut down.

Back then, we didn’t know how long it would last. We had to decide whether we would try and survive, or just let the theatre go,” PowPAC artistic director Gil Savage said.

Throughout the pandemic, the theatre held some virtual performances in an attempt to keep the organization afloat.

“For our first virtual show, we had a well-known magician do a performance, and a lot of people bought tickets. The audience was super patient, and I think they all really enjoyed it,” Savage said.

PowPAC had seven virtual performances in the 18 months it was shut down.

“Running a theatre is expensive, and without the in-person performances,

there was no way we could meet the rent. Luckily, our landlord was able to give us a bit of a break and we were able to have virtual performances so that we could raise money,” Savage said.

The theatre was originally set to reopen in September of this year, but was able to offer a production a bit earlier.

“Once we got word from the state that everything was opening up in June, we immediately made plans to reopen with ‘Murder on the Nile,’” Savage said.

“Murder on the Nile” ran from July 16 to Aug. 8.

the most successful show we’ve had in years, and we are so grateful,” Savage said. “I think everyone has just been so pumped that we are finally able to do in-person performances.”

PowPAC’s second show of the season, “Native Gardens,” ran from Sept. 10 to Oct. 3.

PowPAC plans to open four other shows.

Its third show, “Dashing Through The Snow,” will run from Nov. 5 to Dec. 5.

The fourth show, “Transported,” will be from Jan. 28 to Feb. 20. The fifth show, “Murder at Howard

Johnson’s,” will run from March 25 to April 17. The final show of the season, “Rumors,” is set to run from May 20 to June 12.

Typically, shows run for four weekends with about 14 performances.

“Usually casting takes about a week or two. We rehearse for about six weeks and build the set and such, and then performances begin,” Savage said.

Because PowPAC is a community theatre, meaning all of its staff members are volunteers, it primarily relies on ticket sales and donations.

Around 50 percent of its audience members are season ticket holders.

“Our season ticket holders are able to select their seats as well as change their seats. We also have flex plans where people can buy multiple shows and pick their seats. Both plans offer a discount,” Savage said.

Cutler thrives as player-coach for 1904 FC

T

here have been many who have had a successful playing career in professional sports and then moved on to try their luck in the coaching ranks. Soccer is one of those sports that is famous for that, where the passion remains long after players hang up their jerseys and put away their cleats.

The best local example is the USL Championship team San Diego Loyal with Landon Donovan who, after an impressive rookie season at the helm, has his team on track for its first playoff appearance in club history. In the case of San Diego 1904 FC, which competes in the National Independent Soccer Association, there is a special situation with assistant coach and player Dallin Cutler. The 28 year old Rancho Bernardo High School and San Diego State University graduate is pulling double duty this season by playing as a defender and being part of the coaching staff.

—Lev Kirshner Coaching is nothing new to Cutler who has been in charge of the Rancho Bernardo High School Boys Soccer team since 2015, so this current role is something that he’s fine tuned for.

“I’ve been coaching for a while now and have grown to love it. An opportunity to jump in as an assistant coach arose and I’m very grateful the new ownership group and Scott (Morrison) entrusted me with the opportunity to help the team out in this new role,” Cutler said.

During his time at San Diego State, Cutler helped lead the 2016 mens soccer team to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 10 years, all while garnering Pac-12 All-Academic First Team Honors (a feat he would repeat in 2017).

“He was always one of our most technical and intelligent players. It is no surprise to me that he is playing at this level, and he always displayed a propensity to coach,” said former SDSU mens soccer coach Lev Kirshner. “This is a perfect position

for him to be in at this time in his career. I have to say that San Diego 1904 FC is very fortunate to have Dallin playing a dual role in their organization.”

Before becoming a mainstay for 1904 FC ever since the team started competing in 2019, Cutler spent time in the National Premier Soccer League playing for ASC San Diego alongside current teammate Ozzie Ramos. They helped lead the team to a 9-2-1 record, earning the top seed in their conference and a trip to the regional quarterfinals in 2018. Cutler took the NPSL by storm that season with 14 assists and two goals, which accounted for more than half of the team’s goals.

“It’s great for him to keep playing for as long as he possibly can to help bring success to the club on and off the field whilst gaining valuable coaching experience,” said San Diego 1904 FC head coach Scott Morrison. “Dallin has done a great job so far this season in his role as player/ assistant coach. He still has a lot to offer as a player in NISA and has been instrumental in helping put the team together for the fall season whilst continuing to help us plan for the future.”

Among the players that Cutler was responsible for bringing in was striker Matthew Hurlow-Paonessa, who has a resume that would match that of those currently competing at the highest levels of U.S. soccer. Despite the fact that the team has had an up and down season so far, the fan support has only grown stronger based on the attendance numbers at Canyon Crest Academy Stadium where 1904 FC plays its home matches.

“I expect that we will turn things around and continue to grow as an organization so we can continue to produce something that our fans can be proud of,” Cutler said. “There are a lot of good things happening at 1904 FC and everything is coming together. We are excited to show our fans what we are capable of.”

tarting with his interest in photography at a young age when he played with his grandmother’s Kodak Instamatic, Michael Kacmarcik has had an extensive past in the photography world.

In high school, Kacmarcik continued his interest in photography.

“I made my own lab in our basement where I was able to process black and white film and create prints. My parents said it was a waste of time, but I loved it,” he said.

After high school, Kacmarcik joined the Navy and served from 1976 to 1980.

Following his service in the Navy, he was able to land a job as an engineer at a local company in Virginia where he worked full time. While there, Kacmarcik was also able to work at a local newspaper for a couple of years doing freelance work.

“Where I lived in Virginia, there was a family who owned several community newspapers in that area, so I was able to land a part time position on one of their other community newspapers,” Kacmarcik said.

He worked on the weekly community newspaper “Loudoun-Times Mirror’” for 30 years.

“Being a part of that community newspaper was one of the best experiences I had. I was able to get to know so many people in the community and tell their stories and gain their trust to do so,” Kacmarcik said.

In 2003, Kacmarcik moved from Virginia to San Diego.

He worked for three local newspapers in the span of four years, including the North County Times, The Union Tribune and Today’s Local News.

In 2007, Kacmarcik changed career paths and has been working as a liquor salesman. However, he still takes photos in his free time. His favorite subjects to photograph are people and he loves news photography.

“I think I’ve photographed almost everything, but I just love the raw emotion that people present. I think it is important to get all of the emotions, whether that be happiness or sadness because it really helps you understand the whole story,” Kacmarcik said.

At the moment, he does not have any set plans with his photography journey.

“With COVID and everything, I don’t find myself making photos like I used to. Not many people want to buy photos anymore. Hopefully though, I will get back into it,” he said.

Naya Swimwear: sustainable suits for all shapes

N

etta Ziv, a San Diego local, has been running her own sustainably sourced swimwear line – Naya Swimwear – since 2016.

Ziv studied in Tel Aviv, Israel, where she learned all about textile design, trends, patterns, colors and color combinations. She picked up a liking for making custom swimsuits after she started making her fabric with unique prints.

“I started making the swimsuits custom made,” Ziv said. “Girls would come to my small apartment and I would make each girl – according to her size and the prints that she chose – a suit.

Then from word of mouth, it just started getting a little bigger, and I opened the studio and then a shop in Israel.

Now I also expanded from Israel to San Diego.”

Ziv makes various styles, not only different types of tops and bottoms, but also one-pieces and an apparel line. All of her Naya Swimwear items are size inclusive ranging from small to double X. “I measure my customers and ask them, ‘How do you like the coverage?’ – ‘How do you like the straps?’ ‘A wider strap or a thinner strap?’”

Ziv explained. “So, I try to get as much information from my customers to make them happy.”

With her line being so size-inclusive, Ziv makes it a point to display her bathing suits for online sale with models of all different sizes.

“We always post the customers that tag us so our customers can see how they fit. Not only are you seeing a specific size of model, but everyone can see different body types and shapes and sizes,” she said.

Her bathing suits and apparel line are all sustainably made within the U.S. with recycled materials.

“All of the fabric is made from recycled fabrics. So, it’s plastic bottles, and it’s nets collected from the sea and turned into fiber and then made into fabric,” Zev explained. “Also, all the sewing is done here locally in California in Orange County. I am against mak-

ing (them) in China since I can’t see the working environment. I only want the highest quality.”

These bathing suits range in price from $74 up to $125.

Her suits are sold online and in multiple stores spread out through California, including her studio in Carlsbad and her original location in Tel Aviv. Her studio in Carlsbad caters to appointments only for people who want to try on one of the bathing suits before buying or get fittings done.

“The best way is to order online. If people need to ask about sizing and consult, then there’s, of course, email, Instagram direct messaging, or to call. It’s very, very comfortable ordering online,” Ziv said.

Trick-or-treat tips for a healthy, happy Halloween Consider these ‘tricks’ to have a safe and happy Halloween

t’s that time of the year again when we get to enjoy creative costumes, haunted trails, scary movies, pumpkins and, of course, lots and lots of candy!

Halloween marks the beginning of the holiday season. It is a favorite time for both kids and adults.

If you have children, you know exactly what it means: candy overload!

‘The ‘trick’ to good health is to ‘treat’ your body well.’

Here are some “tricks” to help your kiddos have a safe and happy Halloween and avoid sugar binges.

• Make sure your kids eat a nourishing meal or snack before trickor-treating. This will help you manage their sugar cravings.

• Pick a bag that is appropriate for your child’s age, never bigger than a shopping bag.

• While trick-or-treating on Halloween night, watch out for cars, wear reflective gear and carry a flashlight.

• Meet the Candy Fairy, also known as the “Switch Witch.”

Sort your candy after trick-ortreating and have your kids set their candy by the door. After they go to sleep, you swap it out for a toy or any non-candy item they would like. This is a fun and exciting way for the kids to give up their candy and avoid eating too much sugar.

• Donate excess candy to Soldier’s Angels “Treats for Troops,” a Halloween candy collection program that local businesses like dental offices, gyms, schools and churches participate in. They accept excess Halloween candy from kids in exchange for different goodies.

Look for one near you and make someone else’s day sweet!

• Teach kiddos portion control. Pair the leftover candy with a healthy snack and limit it to one or two treats per day. This allows them to enjoy special treats in moderation.

• Consider handing out non-candy treats. Options like small toys, natural fruit leather roll-ups, bouncy balls, stamps, mini-flashlights, stickers, glow sticks, bubbles, and mini-notebooks are very common.

The “Teal pumpkin project” is a movement to create a safer, happier Halloween for all kids including those with food allergies or other conditions. Putting a teal pumpkin on your doorstep means you have non-food treats available.

Have fun and enjoy a few pieces of candy. Halloween is only once a year!

Remember, healthy habits are formed every single day and should be part of your lifestyle. The “trick” to good health is to “treat” your body well.

For several years, I’ve driven past Café Luna on my way to the office. I finally stopped in to see what all the hype was about.

You might be wondering why it took me so long. It’s a simple answer. I only went to the office on Mondays, the same day the restaurant was closed.

Café Luna’s cozy and comfortable ambiance is suitable for a romantic dinner, or a casual lunch with friends and family. The European décor in the outdoor side patio transports you to Italy as you sip on a glass of wine from the exclusive boutique wine collection. After seeing the selection, you might even feel enticed to join the Café Luna wine club.

A basket of warm and crispy bread served with “Celestial sauce” was brought to the table while I was waiting for dinner. It is beyond a dipping sauce! It can be used as a marinade, pasta sauce or salad dressing. It is also available for purchase in 8-ounce jars.

I enjoyed the seared diver scallops with pappardelle pasta and saffron in a white wine cream. The scallops were perfectly seared. I also ordered the Italian eggplant, a vegan and gluten-free dish.

The simplicity of the ingredients allows the natural flavors to stand out.

The staff is friendly and accommodating. Jamie Wimmer, the owner, runs the restaurant and catering services.

My suggestion is, don’t wait as long as I did to enjoy their food. As they say at Café Luna, “They love you to the moon and back.”

I loved their food and I’ll be back.
