how to design ads. One year later, Robbins became the art director at the newspaper group.

After his stint with newspapers, Robbins’ self-taught success and initiative led him to WildStorm, a comic book publisher, where he accepted a role in the production department, working the unglamorous swing shift.

There, he studied the nuances of lettering, which Robbins explains is the balloons and text found on each page of comic books that showcase the dialogue of the story. In the late 1990s, lettering was created by hand and on the computer. Robbins excelled as an “inker” and was approached by three like-minded coworkers – Ted Adams, Alex Garner and Kris Oprisko – about joining forces to start their own comic book company.

The business pitch was in his colleague’s living room. The deal involved each member contributing a $15,000 investment with an equal 25 percent share in the company. Robbins admitted he didn’t have the full amount, but he cobbled together the funds and tossed in his menagerie of computers and design software, and the deal was launched.

Idea and Design Works, or IDW Publishing, was born on Robbins’ birthday in 1999. The homegrown San Diego company, once housed in a windowless closet space in Pacific Beach, is now a publicly traded powerhouse of comic books, graphic novels, art books and other entertainment media. Robbins left IDW to start the boutique comic book publishing house Clover Press with former IDW cofounder Adams in 2019. The timing of their first release collided with the same week of

the COVID-19 shutdown in March 2020.

Compared to the volume of comic books released each month at IDW, often 40-60 books, Clover Press will issue only five, Robbins said. The “Great Gatsby #1” is set to release later this summer, offering comic book fans a new spin on the Roaring ’20s and introduce reluctant readers to a literary American classic. The broader comic book audience will continue to follow Marvel and DC and be entertained with the hugely successful movies, Robbins said. Clover Press will focus on the eclectic and independent projects with no intention to chase a larger release schedule.

J

ustin Fine, known for his sports photography, had an interest in photography at a young age.

“My dad was a photographer before he went into his career, but he always kept photography his life even after going into his career,” Fine said.

His interest in photography developed into a hobby over the years, but it was not until 2016 when his oldest son began playing sports in high school that Fine began to shoot professionally.

“The times when I was shooting high school football and my son was on the field during Friday night lights were priceless,” he said. “Friday night lights football has an energy to it. The crowd is revved up.

The players are revved up. The coaches are revved up. I get to be in the unique position of being in the middle of all that and capture the images of such intense emotions; and emotions can make amazing images.”

“I love taking photos at the highest level, which is college and professional sports. I love catching the players when they are at their best,” he said. “Because I love doing professional sports action photography, the Olympics are definitely something on my radar.”

While Fine mainly shoots sports, he also focuses on aviation photography.

“When I was in the Navy, I flew, so a part of me loves aircraft photography,” he said.

Fine served 16 years of active duty for the Navy, and 10 years in the reserves.

Fine lived in Scripps Ranch, but this year he moved to Torrey Pines.

He has two sons, Jack, who is going to be a sophomore at American University, and Luke, who is going to be a senior at Scripps Ranch High School.

Fine is married to his wife, Kate.

Sockers look toward new arena

The club has enjoyed a significant amount of success since it began play, having won both the PASL-Pro championship and U.S. Open Cup of Arena Soccer in its first four seasons back as a team. In January 2019, former USMNT player Landon Donovan joined the Sockers, playing for one season after a stint in Liga MX for Club Leon, which was one of the club’s biggest signings since that of Mexican soccer legend Hugo Sanchez in 1979.

The Sockers played their first season after the 2009 comeback at the 3,500-seat Del Mar Arena located on the Del Mar Fairgrounds before moving to the Pechanga Arena San Diego in 2012.

n eventful 2021 continues for the 15time champion San Diego Sockers as the team starts on a new adventure that will see them relocate to North County from their current location at Pechanga Arena starting in 2023.

The club, which broke ground at the new location in Oceanside at the end of May, will be the main attraction in a facility that

will host a wide variety of other events including concerts at the new state-ofthe-art 6,000-seat arena.

“It’s a great move for the long term future of the Sockers,” said team captain Kraig Chiles. “Oceanside will be our forever home.

After the franchise was discontinued on Dec. 30, 2004, the Sockers came back in 2009 under the ownership of David Pike, Carl Savoia and Phil Salvagio. This was the second attempt to revive

The new arena will be located in Oceanside’s El Corazon Park near the SoCal Sports Complex, which is home to 20 soccer fields and plays host to numerous youth soccer events.

“We had fans from Oceanside traveling to (Pechanga Arena) and we hope to have fans from central (San Diego) making the trip north,” Chiles said.

Chiles, a San Diego native and graduate of Poway High School and San Diego State University, has been with the Sockers since 2009.

The arena in Oceanside is being built completely with private funds and no taxpayer dollars, according to the Sockers.

The upcoming 2021 season is expected to start sometime toward the end of the year and the team will try to capture its 16th title.

recently visited Nutmeg Bakery & Café, a family-owned artisan establishment offering farm to table, sustainable foods and sweets.

I met Drew Hoffos, chef and partner, to hear his story about this growing cafe.

“It all began nine years ago,” Hoffos said. “My wife, Michka, and I wanted to support her mother’s passion for baking with gluten-free and organic ingredients, which are sourced locally.”

Shirin Soroushian, Michka’s mother, lived in Italy for many years and enjoyed making gluten-free dishes. This trio opened their first café in Sabre Springs, a charming restaurant that has been delighting its community with delicious creations ever since.

They opened their second location in Scripps Ranch in September 2019. Despite the pandemic’s impact on the restaurant industry, they were able to pivot and keep both restaurants afloat by providing take-out meals and selling ingredients such as flour, yeast and organic eggs. Most who survived the pandemic can relate to the numerous shortages experienced throughout 2020, including baking goods and other essential items.

Hoffos saw the silver lining – they were able to expand their outdoor seating for people to enjoy their meals al fresco.

“Local tastes better” is a true statement at Nutmeg Bakery & Café. They source their ingredients from local farmers, coffee roasters and fishermen. Their dishes are prepared from scratch with local organic ingredients.

local farmed fresh eggs and organic ingredients.”

You can be sure that the amazing spread that goes on their sandwiches does not come from a supermarket jar. The same goes for their homemade pesto and sundried tomato spread.

Their menu offers vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy free options to support their customers’ dietary choices. It also includes “munchkins” kid-friendly options.

For a savory breakfast, the brioche French toast is a must! It is made with brioche soaked in a cinnamon-ginger batter, stuffed with ricotta cream and topped with seasonal compote. The flavors change weekly as they rotate seasonal ingredients and toppings into the dish.

The vegan breakfast scramble is a delicious vegan option. It’s made with local tofu from San Diego Soy Dairy, organic black kale, grilled onions, local mushrooms and Soyrizo, served over herbed home fries. It is topped with avocado.

They also offer a variety of pastries including an espresso chocolate chip scone, gluten-free brownies, and mini cinnamon rolls.

For lunch, they offer a great selection of sandwiches, paninis and salads. The soup of the day is made from scratch with seasonal ingredients. Ninety-five percent of the soups are vegetarian and gluten-free.

The Bombay panini is a

savory and sweet option made with sugar-and-spice bruleed, nitrate-free ham, curry-apple chutney and cream cheese on a grilled French roll with an organic spring mix.

The smokey tom is a houseroasted turkey sandwich with smoked gouda, homemade chipotle aioli, organic greens, onion relish and sliced tomatoes, served on toasted sourdough bread.

Nutmeg has lots of drink options as well. I liked the agua fresca, made with seasonal nutritious and delicious fruits. Perhaps you’d prefer a golden milk latte for its anti-inflammatory properties, or an iced metolius chai to cool down on a summer’s day.

The bakery offers a variety of cakes. The flavors vary from chocolate, carrot and cheesecake to amazingly decadent options such as double chocolate, Nutella, lemon drop, banana cream, and coconut rum.

What’s next for this family business? A third location is coming to Mira Mesa in a few months. It will be at the Casa Mira View apartment complex. Hoffos is also working on future projects, collaborating with an indoor-farm expert and building a menu that utilizes produce grown on-site in an upcoming housing development project to be completed by 2024.
