A

nyone planning to visit some of the parks in Scripps Ranch after dark might want to take a flashlight. Nighttime lighting problems are well-known among residents Longtime resident Jim Renner said in an email that he has not seen much progress in the two years since he started writing to City officials about lights being out at Scripps Ranch Community Park where he walks. But he noticed something in early October. “All the ‘sport’ lights were on and there were several kids’ soccer practices wrapping up,” he stated via email. “The three ‘streetlights’ along the southern edge of the lower field were working again. Those lights were not on last night. Those three were the only streetlights working tonight.” San Diego Parks and Recreation Department provided a list detailing the lighting status of Scripps Ranch parks as of Oct. 6. This list was facil-

itated though the efforts of Anthony Santacroce, senior public information officer at the City of San Diego. • Spring Canyon NP – There is a total of 30 lights, five needed repair and were repaired with LED ballast. The remaining light pole did not require ballast replacement at this time and has the standard ballast. • Jerabek NP – no lighting issue. • Fairbrook NP – No light issues. • Scripps Ranch Community Park – (Musco) Light contractor repaired basketball court lights and redirected one light fixture due to reflection on the baseball field. Security walkway and parking lot light are out. Service Requests have been submitted. • Miramar Overlook Park – No light issues. • Cypress Canyon Park – One light bulb is out on the basketball court. • Lakeview NP – No light issues. • Stonebridge NP – No light issues. Ooom-pa-pa! The spirited members of the Zeitgeist Oktoberfest Band added to the festive atmosphere during the annual Scripps Ranch Swim & Racquet Club Family Oktoberfest celebration Sept. 30 at the Aviary Drive location. The band played traditional Oktoberfest sounds along with all kinds of party music. The popular event featured activities for children, including carnival and pony rides. A beer garden was available for adults and food trucks were onsite. The festivities were roaring until a nighttime rainstorm put a damper on the event around 7 p.m. (photo by Lisa Shadburn)

Theatre opens with ‘The 39 Steps’ By Ashley Shah

“T

he 39 Steps” will be the first production of the new season for Scripps Ranch Theatre. “‘The 39 Steps’ is a love letter to the mysteries and suspense movies of the ’30s. It is a nostalgic look at the spy stories,” director Phil Johnson said. “It is a Hitchcock movie, but it was adapted into a production where there is an element of comedy alongside the mystery.” The production is set in the 1930s, in London. The main character, Richard Hannay, is played by Marley Bauer. Hannay is an average English man whose life is dull. “Richard decides to go out and meets a spy. The spy ends up with a knife in her back. Richard, then goes on a mission to find out what happened,” Johnson said. “Through his journey, he learns that life isn’t good without some adventure in it.” Melanie Mino plays the female lead. “Melanie plays the female that Richard falls in love with. She plays the spy that he meets when he goes out and sees the show. She plays a Swedish woman that instills hope in Richard,” JohnSee “THE 39 STEPS,” Page 14
