Stoneybrook Happenings

Summer’s here! Time to soak up the sun, relax by the pool, or maybe escape with a good beach read. Here are a few recommendations:

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune: A light and humorous adventure. One by One by Ruth Ware: For those who enjoy a bit of suspense. The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles: A captivating read for history buffs.

Staying cool under the summer sun, as the heat rises, remember to stay cool and hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Seek shade during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wear loose, lightweight clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton. Take a refreshing dip

in the pool or enjoy a cool shower. Don’t forget, hurricane season is still upon us. Here are some resources to help you stay prepared: National Hurricane Center: https://www.nhc. noaa.gov/, Ready.gov: https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes. Exciting news! The gym remodel is almost complete. Expect a fresh coat of paint, and an even better space to get your workout in. Don’t forget about the monthly Men’s Breakfast at Perkins! Join your fellow residents for good food and conversation every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable July. Remember to stay hydrated, stay cool, and be prepared for anything hurricane season might throw our way. Stay safe.

Coffee, Tea And Chat

Summer got off to a great start at our June Coffee, Tea, and Chat. Folks chatted about their vacation plans and those who had already traveled told us fun stories about their trips.

See you all in July!

Stay Prepared: Hurricane Season 2024

Hurricane preparedness is a lot like preventive healthcare. Your annual exams, screenings, immunizations and more can help prevent health problems or find them early when they’re easiest to treat.

It’s the same with getting ready in advance of hurricane season. This year, national forecasters are predicting “above-normal” hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin year. Whatever the weather brings, preparation remains key when it comes to your health and medical needs.

The return of La Niña and near-record ocean temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean are among the key drivers of a concerning forecast, experts say. The hurricane season started on June 1 and ends Nov. 30.

First Things First: Know The Locations Of Special Care Shelters

Larry Antonucci, M.D., MBA and president and CEO of Lee Health, says a key component of preparing for hurricane season is determining if you or your loved ones need access to a special care shelter.

“Lee Health hospitals and facilities are not hurricane shelters,” Dr. Antonucci says. “If you or a loved one requires assistance that exceeds services provided at a general population shelter, you must preregister with Lee County Emergency Management.”

To do so, visit the Lee County Special Needs Program. The special needs program is free to Lee County residents.

The program provides shelter for people who live in a home and/or area that’s

of golf was $112,962. Despite the weather, the course is doing a great job. The cash balance as of June 13 was $345,787.67, and as of this date, all accounts payable were paid in full.

On June 6, after 13 years with Stoneybrook Golf as Head Pro, Jeff Nixon retired. He has moved on to another career in the golf industry to enhance another course in their renovations. Jeff was an integral part of growing this course. He grew the Junior Golf Program, which we can proudly say that two of our juniors, Talia Rodino and Cameron Middleton, achieved the honor of playing at the Augusta Drive, Chip and Putt, representing Stoneybrook. Due to this program, many of our juniors achieved college scholarships for their golf talents. Jeff and his staff, along with John Vuknic and his staff, supported us all through the COVID-19 crisis, and we carried on and did well. He also supported us through Hurricanes Irma and Ian. New bridges are being installed throughout the course this summer. With his leadership, we have changed the look of the course and the buildings and have had a fabulous staff.

Jeff, we thank you for all you have done and wish you the very best in your future endeavors! Also, best wishes for your upcoming marriage to a wonderful lady, Tara.

A committee has been formed to review resumes from prospective pros for the course. Currently, the interim position has been given to Kyle Schulte. Please stop in the Pro Shop, introduce yourself, and see what plans he has for the course. He has worked with us as a part-time employee, has had his own

instructional golf business, and has many ideas for improving and continuing to make this course the best it can be.

The new bridge on hole 13 was installed the first week of June. It is a great enhancement to the hole. The remaining bridges, all on the front nine, will begin on July 10 for a twoweek time frame, weather permitting. During this project, the back nine will be open for play. You will also see a change on the 13th sand bunker. Yes, that huge one. There will be two grass walkways through the bunker. This will divide the bunker into three sand bunkers and speed up play. I will have updates through Stoneybrook email blasts as the project moves along.

The course will be closed on Monday starting May 6 through Sept. 30.

The landscape project along Corkscrew Road will be starting at the beginning of July and should be completed within a two-week time period. The landscaping throughout the community is still ongoing.

If you’re interested in lessons or joining one of the Women’s or Men’s Stoneybrook Golf Leagues, please contact the Pro Shop at (239) 948-3933.

If you have any questions regarding these issues or any concerns, please email the CDD at cdd@ stoneybrookesterocdd.com, or attend the CDD meetings.

The next CDD meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at 9 a.m. It will be held at the Stoneybrook Community Center.

Tips From The Pro

Less Tension, More Freedom

There have been times as a coach, I’ve heard a few of my students who have hit a wedge shot to 20 feet and were not very happy with that particular shot. As a matter of fact, this exact scenario occurred this past week during a playing lesson with one of my juniors.

As soon as this junior expressed displeasure with their wedge shot of 20 feet, I pulled up this exact statistical table. This table represents the top players on the PGA Tour when it comes to proximity from the hole from 100 to 125 yards. I asked the junior what they thought the PGA Tour average was from 100 to 125 yards – this student said 10 feet. When I showed this table to my student, they were very surprised that the average proximity to the hole from 100 to 125 yards on the PGA Tour was 20 feet and 1 inch. Little did this student know that they just

hit their wedge shot to the PGA Tour average from 100 to 125 yards. This changed the student’s mindset in a big way.

Sometimes in golf, knowing these types of statistics can help our mindset in a big way. It can relax us, allow us to swing with more freedom, and in the end, make better swings.

During my time as a professional golfer, I felt like I needed to make every 8-foot putt that I looked at. Once I realized that the PGA Tour average from 8 feet was 50 percent, it relaxed me. The best players on the planet only make half of their 8-foot putts! Knowing this, it gave me more of a freewheeling attitude, allowed me to feel more freedom, and in the end, make more 8-footers. The less tension and more freedom we have, the easier it will be to pull off our desired golf shot. Perspective is key!

Stoneybrook Golf Course Pro

“Hello all! My name is Kyle Schulte, and I’m a PGA professional. I’ll be serving as Stoneybrook Golf Club’s Interim Head Golf Professional. Some of you may already know me as one of the assistants in the golf shop, but for those who don’t, I wanted to introduce myself and express how excited I am to have the opportunity to serve this wonderful community.

I’ve grown up as an avid golfer in the Southwest Florida area and have had the privilege to play golf at the collegiate level for the University of Arkansas, Fort Smith, before transferring and graduating from FGCU’s esteemed Professional Golf Management program. It is here where I earned my Class A PGA membership. In the last 10 years, I’ve worked at private and public golf clubs and have gained a lot of experience in golf operations and customer service. Some of the most important things I’ve learned when it comes to customer service are to always be present, always be approachable, and always be willing to listen.

With that said, I want the community to know my office doors are open to you. I’d love it if you came by just to introduce yourself and say hi, or even give us a suggestion for how we can better serve this community. I look forward to meeting all of you!

Sincerely, Kyle Schulte, PGA, Stoneybrook Golf Course

not safe from storm surges or wind and those who have no other safe place to go. It also provides transportation to a shelter for anyone who lacks the means to get there. Medical Supplies, Prescriptions And Other Essentials

“If a storm is approaching, be sure you have refills of your prescription medications and other essential medical supplies, like oxygen,” Antonucci says. “Florida law allows pharmacies to fill prescriptions in advance during hurricane warnings.

“Think ahead, too, about preserving refrigerated drugs, like insulin, in case the power goes out – be sure you have enough ice to keep them cool for several days. If you have questions about your drug’s safety following a storm and power outage, contact poison control for assistance.”

If you choose to stay home and use a generator, be sure you know how to use it properly – generators are one of the leading causes of injury and death following a storm, Antonucci adds.

2024 Hurricane Season: Lee Health Is

“StormReady”

For You

Of course, we can’t predict the future, but whatever this hurricane season brings, Lee Health’s StormReady program is ready to help.

The program helps arm our communities with the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property before, during and after an event, according to Tashawna Gaines, Emergency Preparedness manager for Lee Health.

“The StormReady program is about preparing for our area’s increasing vulnerability to extreme weather and water events,” Tashawna says. “All Lee Health hospitals are certified as ‘StormReady’ by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That means Lee Health has met a rigorous set of federal standards that help educate and prepare our communities on how to stay safe in a severe weather event.”
