The women compete in two leagues. SWIFT, a local league, consists of 7 teams and all members must reside in the community they play for. The season begins in early November through mid-March. Sabal ladies played well, had fun and placed in the middle of the pack. The LCWTL league consists of 23 teams and all players must be 55 years of age and live in Lee County. We travel as far as Sanibel for matches. This league begins in early October through March. Sabal Springs, led by captain Gayle Malvezzi, is very proud to say that we placed 2nd in this league - and had lots of very close but fun matches along the way - and more often than not followed by a team lunch.
We will have a luncheon in the Sunshine Room soon to celebrate the end of another league season. All women who play tennis, whether on a team or not, were invited and we expect a large group.
Although many players are snowbirds there will continue to be open tennis for men and women at the usual times. All residents are welcome to come play
TENNIS TALK
A ONE OF A KIND WOMAN
By Cathy Ward
As she nears 90 years of age, Sabal Springs resident Paula Scheff is definitely a person who knows who she is.
“Of course I am proud of my German heritage,” she says quickly with still a hint of German accent. “My heart is still there. Munich, where I was born, is again a most beautiful city, and Bavaria is the most wonderful state in Germany. We have mountains, lakes, rivers. Everything you could want.”
Paula was born in Munich on Oct 22, 1934, the youngest of four children, to Wolfgang and Eva Horach. At the age of three, her father died of injuries suffered in World War I. He had been drafted as a young man. Her mother raised their four children alone, but life became a nightmare during World War II. Their apartment was bombed twice near the end of World War II, and they had to climb from the rubble to survive. Those war years were a struggle. “We lived very frugally,” she said. “After the war we lived in the crowded basement of our building but all of us survived.” After the war, Paula met a young man, Luben, who was studying engineering at the university there. When Luben immigrated to the USA to work in the automotive world, he brought Paula here a short time later, and they were married when Paula was 19.
Luben’s work took him to many places as they raised their three children, Stephen, Monica and Paul. Paula especially loved their years in South Africa when Luben worked for General Motors. “South Africa is a most wonderful place,” she said. “ I would encourage all to see it.”
When Luben retired, they discovered a new community being built in south Florida, chose a model, had it built, and moved here in 1989. Their home on Dracena is one of the oldest in our community. At the time, the first 50 home owners were given free golf for life. Paula is the only one still on that list.
In her youth in Bavaria, Paula joined a swim team and won numerous awards with her backstroke skills. To this day, she still swims 40 to 60 laps a day in our pool. She used to swim 100 laps.
But swimming is just one of her physical fitness endeavors. She also walks three miles each day, plays golf and tennis, and until recently biked around the community every day. She also does all her own cleaning and cooking and scrubs her kitchen floor daily.. Her home is immaculate and she is especially proud of her bloom filled gardens.
Sadly, her much loved husband passed away four years
ago at 97 years. They were married for 66 years. “He was a real gentleman,” she said, “and truly brilliant.”
On her kitchen table, you will find a book written in German. She is bilingual and reads in German to keep her German language skills fresh. She maintains German food is simply “the best.”
It distresses her to see so many people in the USA unwilling to eat well or exercise for good health. “Junk food is the culprit,’ she says. Now living alone, Paula is still active in Sabal Springs activities, including playing bridge. Her children visit often and friends and neighbors are always popping in. “We have always loved it here,” she said. “I plan to stay.”

QUILTING
By Janice A. Born
Quilting resumed Monday, March 25 at 9:30 in the A/C room. If you are a quilter or like to sew and want to learn how to quilt, come join us. Sometimes we make tote bags, table runners, and wall hangings as well as quilts. We usually work on our own projects. However, in September we all work on making pillowcases for Ryan’s Case for Smiles. Last year we turned in a total of 74. We have two machines in the A/C room but you are welcome to bring your own. I know I prefer to use my own. Stop by the A/C room any Monday morning to see what we’re working on. We’ll be there from 9:30 to 11:30.
LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN
By Loretta Gehman
This golf season has seen an unusual amount of holes in one being achieved on our Sabal Springs golf course. On Friday, April 5th while participating in the Couples Golf Tournament, lightning struck once more. On the par 3 hole number two, Shirley Berry teed off while playing with her husband Mike and John and Gayle Barnes and achieved her fourth career milestone. Her description of the shot was, “it wasn’t pretty, in fact, it was a worm burner”, meaning it never left the ground on its way to the green and eventually into the hole. If you see Shirley, congratulate her on her hole in one which netted her the substantial winnings in the “Hole in One” pot.
SABAL SHUFFLERS
By Carol Homa
The 2023-24 season was celebrated with their second annual dinner hosted by Genny and Tom Lindemann. Over 35 residents/guests enjoyed friendly competition every Tuesday and Thursday. The group also welcomed new residents, Karen/Archie Cox, Debbie List, Terry Clark and Joe Parisi.
Although the formal season winds down as snowbirds return to their summer residences, the courts, equipment and posted regulations are readily available to residents and their guests. As a reminder we ask that you use this amenity appropriately. Join us next season to perhaps learn a new game, hone an old skill, make new friends or renew acquaintances.

On March 30th it was a great day for an Easter Egg Hunt! We had approximately 45 kids with grandparents, great grandparents and it all happened on a beautiful morning.
The Easter Bunny and Mrs Bunny were there with lots of goodies, the horse and pony rode into the Sabal Springs corral.
There were so many volunteers helping make this the best Easter Egg Hunt ever. Thank you Sabal Springs.

By Loretta Gehman
Anyone looking out their back lanai on Saturday, March 16th would surely be able to verify that statement as forty-six couples took to the fairways to compete in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Couples event. All shades of green were worn that day whether or not you were of Irish heritage. Shamrocks and pots of gold adorned the golf course as the competitors were challenged to closest to the pin contests as well as closest to the fairway flags on hole number “Lucky 13”. The individual winners for those contests were as follows:

Bonnie Halberg
Closest to the pin on hole# 2 men’s white
Brian Ward
Closest to the pin on hole# 8 men’s gold
Richard Wine
Closest to the fairway flag hole# 13 women
Terri Carpenter

SABAL SPRINGS ARTS AND CRAFTS APRIL LUNCHEON
by Mary Ann Baillargeon
On April 9, 2024, the Arts & Crafts Group met at Blackbeard’s Tavern in Mariana Town for our luncheon. Approximately we had 50 ladies in attendance. We started the meeting with the pledge of allegiance.
We had 3 choices for lunch, and all were delicious, and the service was very good.
Mary Ann Baillargeon read the Secretary report which was read and approved.
Sandy Cocca read the Treasures report which was read and approved.
Linda Voto announced today was licorice day! She explained the history, and uses of it for its medicinal properties. It was also brewed into beer, also in cakes. Licorice was given to each of us.
We acknowledged 1 birthday and 1 anniversary of 50 years being celebrated.
Sunshine report given by Lynn Suhr a get-well card was sent to Susan Costa on her surgery, and also to Shirley Marsh.
A check was presented to Miguel Medina, for Make a Wish, of $14,339.00, which will be for 2 children to make their wish come true.
We will have a pop-up class coming up on April 26th on making coasters, presented by Mary Maher. Information will be sent out.
Linda had asked by a show of hands who would like to continue eating lunch out instead of at the Standard. It was voted to continue eating out at different restaurants.
Our next luncheon will be on May 7th. More information to follow.
The meeting ended with the raffle and 50-50 drawings being held.
F R ALL THE MARBLES
By Loretta Gehman
Every Saturday morning throughout the fall/winter season here in Sabal Springs, couples fill our golf course to compete against others for the weekly title of best foursome. The culmination of Saturday couples golf competition arrives in early April when the annual couples’ tournament takes place over two days filled with four different games to challenge the skills and the patience of those twosomes. Day one took place on Friday, April 5th when forty couples took to the links to play a shamble format on the first nine holes followed by a best ball format on the back nine holes. In a shamble, both team members tee off and choose the best ball location to play the second shot and they then hit their own ball from wherever it lands until the ball is in the hole. The lowest of the two scores is recorded. In the best ball format, each team plays their own ball into the hole and the best score is tallied. After playing on the first day the couples return home and eagerly anticipate the email detailing the results of the day to determine their standing, who they play with the following day and what they have to do to advance into the money for day two. This year there were three flights of golfers with money to be won in all three flights. Day two arrived just as beautiful as day one with cool morning temperatures, bright and sunny skies and gentle breezes welcoming the couples with promises of great playing conditions on a well-groomed golf course thanks to Sabal Golf Director Michael Stewart, Superintendent Dayton and his crew.
The games for day two consisted of a scramble on the front nine and the always eagerly anticipated alternate shot. The scramble is the game played every Saturday where each golfer tees off and the best ball location is chosen to be played by both for the second shot. That is continued on each shot thereafter until the ball is in the hole. One score per team is recorded. The alternate shot format seems to pose the most troubling moments of this event. Both team members tee off and the best ball location is chosen from which to proceed. The person who did not hit that shot must go next and the team members
alternate shots until the ball goes into the hole. As you can imagine, there are good-natured jabs and jests going back and forth throughout this portion of the contest. In the end winners are crowned and celebrations are held and three couples go home with “all the marbles”. This year’s winners were as follows:
“A” Flight 1st Place Ron & Coleen Birmingham
2nd Place Brian & Jane Ward
3rd Place Larry & Barb Cassidy
4th Place Al Parchuck & Donna Ireland
“B” Flight 1st Place Jeff & Linda Charlesworth

FASHION SHOW 2024 MAKE A WISH
by Mary Ann Baillargeon
On March 21, 2024, the Arts & Crafts Group had the “Make A Wish” 9th annual fashion show at our updated clubhouse. The fashions were from Dillard's, the Naples store manager Lisa Sangster, was the commentator.
The guest speakers from the Make a Wish foundation were Miguel Medina and Fran Waldman. And our Special guest model Sara Faella who was the make a wish recipient. A total donation of $14,339.00 was raised. The money raised was $800 more than last year.
Our models were Jeanine Clapp, Sheri Weitner, Maddy Jennings, Sharri Roser, Lynn Suhr, Phyllis Sandler, Perry Swan, Sid Cegalski. The Ushers who escorted the models and delivered the winning baskets were Jeff Bloss, Tony Cantabene, Dave Mowery, Mark Richards.
The 70+ raffle baskets valued at $100 each were big hits with everyone. Dillard’s gave a $500 gift card and there was also a money tree and $500. Raffle prize!
Lunch was served by the Standard, and in addition each table had a crudité tray made by Patsy Clark.
The Arts and Crafts committee would like to thank all the supporters and the so very many sponsors who helped make the event a wonderful success.
Thank you to Linda Voto for her hard work leading the way for this event!
SUNSHINE SINGLES
by Geri Gregorio
It's approaching that time of year when some of the Singles will soon be heading back to their northern homes. We'll certainly miss them ...BUT...those of us who stick out the summer heat will still have a good time! March & April were fairly quiet months for us although we did have a great time touring the hotels and eating at Margaritaville and Sunseekers. Activities were rained out a few times but we did manage to squeeze in a few sunny days at the beach. Several members enjoyed going to Broadway Palm's Beautiful: Carole King Musical, and Florida Repertory Theater for Hank Williams--Lost Highway. Both shows were exceptionally well done--to say nothing of Broadway Palm's delicious buffet! We were anxious to return to the newly renovated Clubhouse and Standard restaurant on St Patrick's Day to dance to the sounds of our favorite group, Bandstand, and a new favorite DJ, Mike Bollea! Always fun, we joined Cape Coral singles at Pine Lakes for dinner and dancing. We played Shuffleboard, pickleball and tennis. Our group is currently discussing future activities such as mini-golf, shopping at Matlacha, and the possibility of monthly dining at a variety of local restaurants.
We're always open to new ideas and suggestions. If you're a single Sabal Springs resident, we invite and welcome you to join us. Our next meeting and potluck dinner will be at 5 PM on May 22nd at a member's home. Please call Geri Gregorio or Terri Marotta for the location of our meeting. We're looking forward to meeting you!
MARCH MADNESS
By Loretta Gehman
Sabal Springs experienced its own version of March Madness as it does every year to determine the champions of our golf course. The SSMGA and the SSLGA crowned a new set of winners following play-offs in each of the various flights of golfers which for the gentlemen took two weeks and the ladies finished in one week. The format is match play which, simply put, is two flighted golfers play as many holes as are necessary for one to win more holes than the other thereby advancing to the next round until just two golfers are remaining to compete in the final day of play with one being declared the “Club Champion'' for their flight.
The SSMGA had six flights this year while the SSLGA had three eighteen-hole flights and two nine-hole flights. The competition was intense, the matches well played and the victories well deserved. The winners were as follows:
Men’s “E” Flight
Jeff Duncan defeated Leo Pierson
Men’s “D” Flight
John Barnes defeated Paul Perdue
Men’s “C” Flight
Tom Miller defeated Guy Armstrong
Men’s “B” Flight
Bob Connelley defeated Roger Frantz
Sabal Springs
Men’s “A” Flight
Dave Fritz defeated Bruce Mack
Women’s 9-Hole “B” Flight
Beth Zes defeated Susan Roberts
Women’s 9-Hole “A” Flight
Kathy Carpenter defeated Robin Fritz
Women’s 18-Hole “B” Flight
Patsy Clark defeated Charley Frantz
Women’s 18-Hole “A” Flight
Loretta Gehman defeated Sue Short
AND FINALLY…drum roll, please…
SSMGA Championship Flight
Ron Birmingham defeated Larry Cassidy
SSLGA Championship Flight
Barton Sala defeated Mary Lou Collins
Congratulations to all of this year’s winners who marched their way to victory!
