Hanley Foundation To Transform Resource Center Into Public Community Hub For Healing And Connection

The new community hub marks Hanley Foundation’s first step in its multimillion-dollar campaign to expand its campus and build new facilities for specialized programs.

Leading a new era in recovery, Hanley Foundation has begun transforming its Resource Center into a public hub for community connection and support. Slated to open in the fall of 2026, the revitalized center will feature a coffee shop, a recovery bookstore, and a versatile meeting space. It will be open to individuals aged 18 and older, offering educational programs, peer support, job training, and services for long-term recovery.

“To truly heal, people need more than treatment, they need a lifelong lifeline of care, belonging, and support,” said Dr. Rachel Docekal, CEO of Hanley Foundation. “Our reimagined Resource Center will ensure a public space to foster healing, deep connections, and long-term success.”

Local Spotlight

Dr. Reza Khatib, 95 Years Young, Celebrates A Legacy Of Medical Research And Philanthropy

At 95 years of age, Dr. Reza Khatib can look back at an incredible legacy as an outstanding neurosurgeon, an acclaimed researcher on brain issues, and a beloved worldclass philanthropist.

Dr. Khatib celebrated his birthday festivities with friends, colleagues and his dear family from Iran. They all joined him for a joyful party at Harbour Ridge in Palm City in October. His friend Dr. Amir Manbachi, an interdisciplinary academic in neurosurgery, biomedical engineering and ultrasound from Johns Hopkins, played the Persian Tombak, a drum carved in one piece from a tree trunk with a drumhead made from goatskin. The guests who were able joined him in singing Happy Birthday in his native Farsi. Everyone else then joined in English.

In keeping with his generosity, Khatib offered each guest a gift – an accounting of his best advice for living a good life, and a reminder that he is still busily pursuing his dreams of a cure for malignant brain cancer.

Khatib is an acclaimed retired neurosurgeon who has been recognized locally, nationally and internationally for his thoughtful generosity, leadership and impressive contributions in bettering community life, institutions and organizations.

His influence on the Treasure Coast community is significant. He donated funds to the Council on Aging’s Day Primary Care program, for example, to provide patients the opportunity to receive specialized diagnostic PET scans to check for Alzheimer’s disease. These tests are not covered by insurance. His generosity has helped many patients learn if they had been incorrectly diagnosed and to confirm a more accurate diagnosis at no cost to the patient. The project is part of an extensive, ongoing Alzheimer’s disease research initiative with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Khatib is also the founder and driving force behind the Khatib Bridge and Education Center in Stuart. At his nonprofit facility, members who formerly drove to West Palm Beach for sanctioned bridge matches can now participate close to home.

In 2017, the Council on Aging Martin County named Khatib as the Sage Award Honoree in category of Health Science and Medicine. Since that time, his energies have been largely devoted to finalizing a series of self-sustaining contracts, working with Johns Hopkins, Case Western University and Cleveland Clinic, to subsidize the continuing search for a cure for glioblastoma and other malignant forms of brain cancer, an effort that has been a lifelong priority for him.

Khatib first decided to become a neurosurgeon as a boy of 10. Over the next 50 years he and his late wife Georgie built a thriving practice, an international reputation and the retirement fortune that has allowed for his philanthropic pursuits. In his hometown of Mashad, Iran, for example, the Khatibs established the Clinic and School for the Indigent and instituted Mashad’s first Hospice for the Terminally Ill.

Khatib’s skill, talent, intelligence, positive energy and generosity over his 95 years have resulted in contributions to medicine, science and the overall well-being of the local and international communities of which he is a part.

inflammation which is called gingivitis. As the bacteria spread it works its way deeper and deeper around the teeth and causes periodontal disease which eventually causes loss of the teeth. The best way to prevent dental disease is regular brushing of your pet’s teeth and special dental treats. Regular cleaning of the teeth under general anesthesia is also needed. The most common problem with your pet’s teeth is periodontal disease which can start as early as 4 to 5 years of age. Only by cleaning below the gumline can you slow this process down and only by cleaning under anesthesia can you do this.

Reason 1: Overall Health And Longevity Of Your Pet

Bacteria from dental disease can get into the blood and travel to important organs such as the heart, liver and kidney. These conditions will shorten your pet’s life span and will need costly and extended treatment. It is better to get your pet into your veterinarian for a full dental cleaning regularly than lose precious time with your beloved companion.

Reason 2: Bad Breath

When periodontal disease progresses halitosis (bad breath) comes along with it. If the teeth are really diseased, you can often smell the breath from across a room! We all love to cuddle with our fur babies, but it becomes difficult when the smell turns your stomach. Get those teeth cleaned!

Reason 3: Pain

Periodontal disease is very painful for your pet. Sore, inflamed gums and loose teeth can make it hard for your pet to eat. Abscesses and infections cause chronic longterm pain that your pet may not even tell you about. Often the disease is slowly progressive, so they get used to the pain and continue to eat and act overall normal. What you may notice is that they become head shy—avoiding touch to the mouth or face because it hurts. Sometimes they will just want to eat soft food instead of the dry food they always loved. Often after a dental is performed on a pet with a painful, diseased mouth and the infected teeth or infection are removed, the pet is suddenly playful and more energetic. This is a clear indication that the teeth were painful and affecting your pet’s quality of life.

Reason 4: Tooth Loss

Once bacteria get under the gum, the tissues supporting the teeth and the bone are slowly eaten away. Abscess can form at the roots of the teeth. These teeth will become loose and even fall out. This is painful and it is not uncommon for a pet to then need multiple extractions when getting their teeth cleaned. Some pets end up with no teeth remaining if it is left too late. Getting prophylactic dental cleanings starting early in life and keeping up with regular routine dental care will prevent this from happening.

We brush our teeth twice a day and we need regular professional dental cleanings. Your furry friends also need regular brushing and dental treats and regular professional dental cleaning. Every pet is different but in general, small breed dogs will need a full anesthetic dental yearly and even every six months as they get older. Larger breeds may need dentals only every few years. The general recommendation is to get a dental done on your pet yearly combined with at home dental care in between. At-home dental care includes dental treats and tooth brushing. It is important to get your pet into your veterinarian for annual checkups to assess the teeth and decide on the best plan for your pet’s dental care. Don’t ignore what could be a hidden but serious problem.

Poinsettia Power Luncheon

Readies A Festive Event To Benefit Meals On Wheels

The glittering and festive 2025 Poinsettia Power Luncheon will delight attendees on Tuesday, Dec. 2, and once again raise critical funds to support Meals on Wheels, a vital program of the Council on Aging Martin County.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Poinsettia Power is bringing back its favorite elements – glorious food, a spectacular fashion show, an extensive silent auction and an exciting array of vendors for a holiday bazaar. Erin Guy of WPBF 25 News will be the emcee. This year will also feature a hat parade.

Amid all the fun, there is a very serious purpose. Funds raised through the luncheon support the Council on Aging Martin County’s Meals on Wheels program.

Good Works

The 2025 Poinsettia Power Luncheon Committee are busily stirring up an exciting, festive and meaningful event: Chef Chris Baker, Joanna Mangan, Jill Ball, Francesca Morgan, Donna Haines, Marney McKee and Devon Senical.

Donna Haines, who has worked on the event for 14 years, describes why it matters. “Meals on Wheels is not just about the hot food delivered daily, although healthy nutrition for vulnerable seniors is essential. It’s also about the human touch,” Haines said. “It brings a smile and also a quick check on the senior’s well-being.”

This year’s Poinsettia Power Luncheon will be held at Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa. “We’re encouraging people to become Table Ambassadors and fill a table with friends and neighbors,” said longtime Committee Member Marnie McKee. “And don’t forget that gentlemen are most welcome to join us!” The 2025 Poinsettia Power Luncheon Committee – Chef Chris Baker, Joanna Mangan, Jill Ball, Francesca Morgan, Donna Haines, Marney McKee and Devon Senical – urge everyone to buy tickets early. “We always sell out,” McKee said. “And you absolutely don’t want to miss this great holiday tradition.” Sponsors of the Poinsettia Power Luncheon include the Holly Program Sponsor Cummins-Levenstein Charitable Foundation, in honor of Audrey Sandra Wolfin; Sugar Plum Supporter Publix Super Market Charities; Peace Lily Invitation Supporter Bob & Ralf Massey Foundation; Peace Lily Supporters Donna Haines and Betsy Herold; Amaryllis Valet Sponsor Ross Earle Bonan Ensor & Carrigan, P.A.; Amaryllis Décor Sponsor Nancy Goethel, CFP®, CIMA®, CRPC®, vice president, Investments at Raymond James; and Mistletoe Sponsors Francesca Morgan Interiors, Beacon Legacy Law, Sandhill Cove Retirement Living, Seacoast National Bank and Water’s Edge at Sandhill Cove. ADHD: Turning Challenges Into Strengths

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD) is often viewed through the lens of struggle with difficulty focusing, impulsivity, and disorganization. But there’s another side to the story. When supported effectively, individuals with ADHD can transform challenges into strengths.

As a school neuropsychologist, I’ve worked with children with ADHD. I’ve seen firsthand how the right

Kids Corner

mindset, strategies, and support can unlock potential and build confidence. Here are four ways parents and students can reframe ADHD from a limitation to a launching pad.

First, shift the mindset. ADHD is a difference, not always a deficit. It’s easy to focus on what’s hard: staying seated, completing assignments, or managing time. But ADHD also comes with positive traits including creativity, passion, intuition, energy, and thinking outside the box. Empowerment tip: Reframe language at home and instead of saying “You’re so disorganized,” try “Let’s build some systems that work for your brain.”

Second, identify personal strengths. Children with ADHD often hear what they’re not good at. Counteract this by helping them discover what they are good at. Are they imaginative storytellers? Problem-solvers? Natural leaders? Noticing and nurturing these strengths builds self-worth. Empowerment tip: Keep a “strengths journal” where your child records moments when they felt successful.

Third, redefine success. Traditional school models don’t always match to how kids with ADHD learn. But

success isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s about progress, effort, and growth. Empowerment tip: Celebrate effort, not just outcomes. Use phrases like “I love how hard you worked on that,” or “You didn’t give up and that’s success!” Fourth, model resilience and problem-solving. Your child is watching how you respond to challenges. When they see you handle stress, adapt to change, and keep trying, they learn to do the same. Empowerment tip: Talk through your own problem-solving process out loud and giving insight into your logical thinking. “I made a mistake, but I’m going to try this instead.”

Every child with ADHD has strengths waiting to be unlocked. Empowerment starts with understanding. Call (561) 625-4125 if you would like to discuss your child. Learn more at www.JimForgan.com.

Port St. Lucie Family Returns To Tradition Hospital To Say ‘Thank You’

When Cheryl Sheppard, RN, a nurse in the Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), received the news that a former patient was returning to visit, she was overjoyed.

“This was a first for me,” she said. “My heart was just filled.”

On June 30, 8-year-old Nathan Jensen and his mother Stephanie, returned to the NICU where they were welcomed by Cheryl and fellow NICU caregivers.

“I couldn’t stop hugging Nathan,” Sheppard said. “He is so cute and well-behaved. When he said, ‘Thank you for saving my life,’ it was all I could do to keep myself standing.”

Upon seeing the Jensens again, Cheryl was reminded of the experience of identifying a potentially life-threatening condition in Nathan – and the events that followed. A Lifesaving Observation

Nathan Jensen was delivered at Tradition Hospital at 29 weeks’ gestation on June 22, 2017, and admitted to

the hospital’s Level II NICU. At 4 weeks old, he began to show signs of distress.

“I observed Nathan was behaving differently and his abdomen was distended,” Sheppard said. “When he had an abnormal, oily stool, I knew he was in trouble.”

Cheryl escalated her concerns, and Nathan was immediately transferred to a Level III NICU in Miami. Nathan was diagnosed with and treated for necrotizing enterocolitis, a serious intestinal disease that primarily affects premature infants.

“If Cheryl had not acted when she did, Nathan could have lost his bowel or even his life,” Stephanie said. During the reunion with Nathan and his mom eight years later, Cheryl was moved by their gratitude.

“I’m so honored to be able to do this work all these years,” Cheryl said. “When I was hugging Nathan, I felt like I was hugging all of the babies I cared for over the years. Each of them is so precious.”

Stephanie Jensen expressed her unwavering trust in Tradition Hospital. “The hospital staff was so passionate and thorough, I knew Nathan was safe and in good hands,” she said. “Cheryl became part of our family during that time. Without the care he received in the Tradition NICU, our story could have ended very differently.”

and Comptroller Friendly faces at the door? Don’t be surprised! Here’s what you need to know about home solicitation sales in Martin County.

If someone comes knocking at your door offering products or services, don’t be alarmed—but do be informed. Individuals engaging in home solicitation sales in Martin County are legally required to obtain

a Home Solicitation Sale Permit, unless they meet one of the exceptions listed under Section 501.022(8), Florida Statutes.

This permit process –managed by the Martin County Clerk of the Circuit Court in partnership with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement – helps ensure transparency, accountability, and consumer protection for residents throughout the county.

Here’s What You Should Know

• All approved permit holders must carry their permit with them at all times while conducting door-to-door sales.

• Before any sale, lease, or rental offer is made, the permit must be shown to the prospective buyer.

• Each applicant undergoes a background screening and verification process, helping safeguard neighborhoods from potentially fraudulent or unsafe solicitations.

• Once approved, salespeople are issued an official ID card, which must be visibly displayed during all solicitation activities.

• Individual municipalities may also have additional permit requirements. Please contact the municipality where home solicitation sales will occur regarding permitting requirements. This framework is designed to protect residents from unwanted or deceptive sales practices while allowing legitimate business to be conducted respectfully and legally.

If you have questions or would like more information about the Home Solicitation Sale Permit, please contact the Official Records Division at the clerk’s office at (772) 288-5551.

As the year winds down and the holidays draw near, November invites us to slow down, reflect, and give thanks. It’s a season filled with pumpkin spice, festive decor, and heartfelt connection—but above all, it’s a time for gratitude.

For me, November is about looking back on the months before and appreciating the people and moments that made them meaningful. I deliver Thanksgiving pies to clients to show my appreciation. I host a Friendsgiving luncheon to celebrate the friends who support me unconditionally. And I wrap up the month with a Thanksgiving feast for my children, their friends, and anyone who needs a seat at the table.

As President of the Palm City Chamber, I’m equally grateful for the heart of our community. To our dedicated staff—thank you for your tireless work advocating for each member. To our chamber members—thank you for showing up, investing in Palm City, and supporting one another. This spirit of community is what makes the Palm City Chamber so special.

This season, we’re excited for events rooted in gratitude: the Veterans Bridge 5K, our festive Holiday Village along Mapp Road, the return of Music in the Park, and a series of ribbon cuttings as we welcome new businesses and members into our chamber family.

Wherever you celebrate this season, we hope to see you—pumpkin spice latte in hand—joining us in gratitude, connection, and community.

Impact100 Martin Launches 2026 Season With Kickoff Celebration On Nov. 12

Thousands of lives have been changed for the better thanks to Impact100 Martin, a women’s philanthropy group now entering its ninth year of awarding $100,000 Impact Grants to local nonprofits.

The members of Impact100 Martin set out on their mission to “transform the community through collective giving” in 2017. Since then, the membership has grown to 510, and more than $2.3 million has been awarded in Impact Grants in the focus areas of arts and culture, education, family, health and wellness, environment, and preservation and recreation.

Last year alone, Impact100 Martin sparked community change with half a million dollars in grants for the following programs:

• Banner Lake Connections

• Buildup: Empowering Martin County’s Next Generation of Skilled Workers

• Everglades Edudome Experience – Young Friends of the Everglades

• Preserving Healthy Food for Our Community

• Security and Safety Upgrades at Martin County Domestic Violence Shelter

The nonprofit group is preparing for its annual kickoff celebration on Nov. 12 to start a new season of inspiring impact. “I’m constantly amazed, but not surprised, at the number of generous women who give their time, talent and treasure to Impact100 Martin,” said Impact100 Martin President Sue Whittington. “We believe in the power of leveraging our collective efforts to accomplish great things, and we have the proof that it works!”

The Impact100 model of collective giving is simple: members contribute $1,000 a year to be pooled together into a grant-making fund. For every 100 women, Impact100 Martin awards one $100,000 grant. Local nonprofits are encouraged to “dream big,” and present projects that will have a lasting impact in Martin County. After a rigorous

vetting process, members hear from the finalists and vote on which projects to fund at the organization’s annual grant awards celebration in the spring.

The keynote speaker for the Season 9 Kickoff Celebration is Lisa Holland, president and CEO of Sheltair, the largest privately held aviation real estate and FBO (fixed base operator) company in the United States. As a visionary leader and philanthropist, she is deeply committed to inspiring positive change. Her work with organizations such as the Blue Lightning Initiative, Pilots N Paws, and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital showcases her passion for community impact. She is also the driving force behind Sheltair’s Girls in Aviation Day, empowering the next generation of aviation professionals.

“Get ready to be inspired and challenged,” Whittington said. “Our goal is to increase our membership beyond our recordbreaking 510 members and funnel even more philanthropic

funds into life-changing projects within our community in 2026. If you’re passionate about our community and excited about creating change, we invite you to join us.”

The Kickoff Celebration will be held at the Kane Center on Salerno Road in Stuart beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12. It is open to the public, with tickets for $25 each, available through Nov. 3, and can be purchased online at www. impact100martin.org.

Detailed information about membership, grants, and community impact is available at the website www. impact100martin.org, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ Impact100Martin or on LinkedIn at linkedin.com/company/ impact100-martin-county.

Cervical Disc Herniation: A Pain in the Neck that is Treatable

Cervical (neck) disc herniation is seen in many age groups. This problem is becoming more common as people spend hours each day with their neck bent to look at computers, tablets or cell phones. Ivan Stoev, MD, a neurosurgeon at Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital, answers some commonly asked questions about cervical disk herniation.

What is a herniated disc?

The spinal column is made up of a series of bones called vertebrae. Between the vertebrae are flat, round cushioning pads called intervertebral discs, which act as shock absorbers. Each disc has a soft rubbery center made of cartilage like our ear lobes. A herniated disc – also called a slipped or ruptured disc – occurs when pressure from the vertebrae above and below force some or all of the rubbery cartilage through a weakened part of the outer layer of the disc.

shoulder, and numbness or weakness in the fingers are all signs.

How is a herniated disc diagnosed?

Your physician can order a variety of tests to determine the cause of neck or shoulder pain, such as X-rays or MRI or CT scans, sometimes with dye injected into the spinal canal. Another test is an electromyelogram, which involves placing small needles into muscles and measuring their response. How is a herniated disc treated?

Some improve on their own. Physical therapy, steroidal medication and traction can help improve them, too, as can spinal injections known as epidurals or nerve blocks. For more serious cases, surgery to decompress the nerve root and remove a small part of the disc gives pain relief. For extreme neck and arm pain, we can remove the entire disc and replace it with a bone graft or artificial disc. Most patients can resume normal activities six to eight weeks after surgery.

At the 2025 Grant Awards Celebration, Impact100 Martin members awarded $500,000 in grants to support local programs. The group will continue its mission of collective giving as it launches the 2026 season at the Kickoff Celebration on Nov. 12 at the Kane Center in Stuart.
