MAKING MAGIC HAPPEN
By Linn Campbell
First and foremost, I want to say thank you to the whole community of Sabal Springs from the Emergency Preparedness Committee. Your generosity is truly amazing.
The North Fort Myers Fire Department came yesterday to pick up all of the toys you so generously gave from the bottom of your hearts … thank you so much! We went from approximately 400 gifts in 2023 to more than 750 this year wow! Bikes, dolls, stuffed animals, games, and so much more.
A thank you also to everyone who came out yesterday to help set up the toys and pack them up with the FD. And another thank you to all who donated cookies for us and the FD. We were able to send three enormous trays of cookies to the firehouse from Sabal Springs, just for them.
My heart swells when I witness all the love and generosity this community is capable of. The Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC) cannot say thank you enough to all of you.
To all of our fellow residence, have a blessed and happy holiday season from the EPC.
LIGHTS…WITH A TWIST
By Loretta Gehman
The sixth annual house decorating contest had a new twist this year when it was turned into a community project with voting for your favorite decorated house by all residents. The committee totally underestimated how many of you would take part in the process and promptly ran out of ballots the first day. But, alas, the copy machine was put into immediate service, more ballots were printed and cut and the final day of voting ensued. There was a total of 208 ballots cast for beautifully decorated properties throughout the community. The residents outdid themselves this year with more individual homes with lights than the committee has ever seen in the past six years. After the votes were tallied, the winners became very clear.
On the evening of the Christmas parade, Saturday, December 7, the winning property owners were recognized as follows (please see the front cover):
Third place: Bruce & Linda Mack — 17840 Dragonia Drive
Second place: Roger & Sheryl Williams — 3428 Sabal Springs Blvd.
First place: Leo Pierson and Arlene Roy — 17843 Dracena Circle
The winners received a 2024 Christmas ornament depicting a front door and the place that their home was ranked in the competition.
Thanks to all of the residents who worked so diligently on their lighting displays and thanks to all of the residents who took the time to enjoy a ride through Sabal Springs to enjoy the decorations and place their votes.
And so, another Christmas season in Sabal Springs came to a close. Don’t we just have a wonderful community full of great special events all year, but none as fun as Christmas?
THE BAND AND CADETS RETURNED
By Loretta Gehman
After a disappointing Christmas Parade in 2023 without the young musicians and JROTC cadets from North Fort Myers High School because of the clubhouse being remediated for mold, the kids were back and what a triumphant return they made! The energy and enthusiasm that only teenagers have in such abundance was evidenced on a beautiful night in December in Sabal
Springs as they proudly marched and entertained the residents and their guests with their music and chants. These kids are supported by their families who showed up in large enough numbers this year to create a bit of a parking issue prior to the start of the parade. What a great problem to have…parents proud of their children and participating in their activities by following them as they travel to their events. We had five busloads of kids between the band members and JROTC all of whom were served hot dogs, potato chips, and tons of cookies prepared by the ladies of Sabal Springs.
There were antique cars and a dandy looking pick-up truck. The Cape Coral Corvette Club had seven beautiful
The Winner!
vehicles in the parade. All you need for a great parade is a fire truck, Sheriff’s Department vehicles, decorated golf carts, a great band, marching future military leaders, and Santa Claus and we had all of that on the night of December 7.
The Grand Marshals this year were Dave and Deb Collins whose flamingo inspired golf cart won third place in the golf cart competition. Second place went to Bernie and Mary Zitek with a cart designed to depict a beautifully wrapped Christmas present for under the tree. First place was awarded to Dave Worthington and Terri Carpenter with a traditional Christmas theme. Terri remarked that she was overwhelmed because the Nutcrackers on the rear of the cart belonged to her parents originally. Congratulations to the winners, who were judged by the North Fort Myers firemen and two Sheriff’s department deputies. The winners received gift certificates to The Lake House. Thanks to Tom Watson for providing the prizes as well as donating the 300 hot dogs to feed the kids. Thank you also to Duane and Sandy Klepper for their portrayal of Santa and Mrs. Claus this year. Special thanks to Donna Ireland and her crew of volunteers to get the band members and the JROTC fed. Thanks to the ladies of Sabal Springs for baking endless amounts of cookies for those same kids and shut-ins throughout the community. Thanks to Mike Glean for entertaining us after the parade for tips only. Thanks to Sid & Yvonne Cegelski for acting as our elves dressed as M&Ms to collect donations from the folks along the parade route.
A big thank you to the residents for your donations again this year for the North Fort Myers High School music department and the JROTC. Donations were tallied and a total of $3,877 was presented to the North Fort Myers High School music department at their Christmas concert on Friday evening, December 13, and a presentation of $1,240 was made to the JROTC at the high school on Monday, December 16. Both organizations were extremely appreciative of the donations to their respective causes. There were cheers, whistles and applause by the kids, their families and their leaders. We will report in February 2025 the total collected.
ABOVE AND BEYOND
By Donna Milbee
You have probably seen a golf cart with a ladder projecting from the back roaming around the community. That’s Randy Lockhart, one of our residents who goes ABOVE & BEYOND to help his neighbors.
Randy has only lived in Sabal Springs since June 2020, but he already has quite an impressive list of contributions. He first visited Sabal Springs back in 2020 to celebrate his 60th birthday on Feb. 12, with Steve Geraci, a lifelong friend from kindergarten, who both hail from Rochester, N.Y. Randy and Beth, his wife of 22 years, returned to Bethlehem, Pa., where the two had relocated for work a couple of years earlier. After their visit, the two bought their house at 3968 Sabal Springs Blvd. online. They spent three months rehabbing their home before moving in.
Randy has two daughters from a previous marriage, Nicole and Jamie, and four grandsons ranging in ages from 2 to 7, who we all enjoy seeing on Facebook from time to time. Like most grandparents they drive north often to visit.
Randy retired in 2023 after a 30-year career with Rochester Beer and Beverage and 10 years employed by Toyota Lift Northeast. But the career he is most proud of is 45 seasons refereeing high school basketball. He also officiated college basketball from 1984 to 1994. Recently, he worked six days in a row for the Lee County High Schools and South Gulf Coast Basketball Association. This not what most of us would call “retirement.”
But retiring to work seems to be Randy’s modus operandi. Not only does he use that aforementioned ladder
Parade Grand Marshals: Dave and Deb Collins
Santa and Mrs. Claus, aka Duane and Sandy Klepper
One of the many classic cars on parade display
to do painting and other handyman jobs around Sabal Springs, but he has been involved in HOA committees and leadership ever since moving in. Randy ran for the board of directors in 2022 and as the “runner-up” in votes stepped into the vacancy created when Bob Rinehart passed away. Randy was elected for another two-year term in 2023 but resigned because of some conflicts.
Outside of board duties, he chaired the ARC committee and helped implement some much-needed adjustments, including reducing the lead time for approvals and streamlining processes.
Currently, as chair of the Contracts Committee, he has helped negotiate lower prices and better service contracts for the golf course cart rental and pool maintenance. Randy is pool certified and he has spent many mornings making sure the pumps and heaters were working properly, for which the Aquacise group is very appreciative. A pool deck contract is currently in negotiations.
Randy and Beth have a Mediterranean Cruise planned for next year when Beth retires. That’s when he says their only plans for the future are to travel. But there is no doubt that he will still be on call to help his neighbors and looking out for the best interests of Sabal Springs.
Many thanks are due to Randy for going “Above and Beyond” to help our community thrive.
Going forward, The Breeze will interview other folks who consistently contribute to Sabal Springs and provide aid greater than expected.
A WORTHWHILE PROJECT
By Loretta Gehman
For the last 20 years, every year the Sabal Springs Ladies Golf Association (SSLGA) has sponsored the Guardian ad Litem Angel Tree in Lee County. For those of you unfamiliar with the Guardian ad Litem system, it is a government program that represents abused, abandoned, and neglected children in court and the community. A team of professionals, including a child welfare advocate and a trained volunteer or pro bono attorney, attend to the needs of these children in our area.
Guardian ad Litem serves as the major fundraiser for
the year for the SSLGA. This year we were able to collect $4,009.00 which allowed us to fill the need for Christmas gifts for 36 children.
Depending on the ages of these children, ranging from 1 to 18, our elves — Linda Sholette and Donna Ireland — purchased a wide variety of toys and electronics, which included a baby bouncer and rattles, Leap & Learn tablets, books, stuffed animals, Chromebooks, and laptop computers. An array of trucks, dolls, Legos and remotecontrolled cars were purchased as well.
The generosity of this community is always outstanding, and this year was no different. We received donations from the Arts & Crafts group of Sabal Springs as well as outside donations from the Knights of Columbus and various vendors serve our community, including Elias Brothers Painting and Ellsworth Heating and Cooling. As always, our lady golfers and the Saturday couples golfers added to the total collection. The SSLGA wants to take this opportunity to once again thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts. You are, indeed, the true angels.
SABAL SPRINGS A&C DECEMBER LUNCHEON
By Linda Voto
On Dec. 5, 2024, the Arts & Crafts (A&C) group met, and the meeting started with the pledge of allegiance. A buffet lunch, including chicken, baked fish, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, salad, rolls, and dessert, was provided by The Lake House restaurant.
The North Fort Myers Choir entertained us with wonderful Christmas songs, helping to put everyone in the Christmas spirit. They were terrific, such wonderful voices. Six of the singers will be in the national competition and three will be in the state competition. The choir consists of 33 teens. We supplied pizza, cookies, and water for them. Our members donated money to the singers for their competition.
A&C received about 200 donations for the seniors at the Aspire Nursing Home, two per resident. Dawn Geraci, the manager of Bath & Body Works, said they would be donating about an additional 120 gifts, which were given out during facility’s Christmas party. Thank you to everyone for your generosity.
The meeting ended with the raffle and 50-50 drawings.
TOURNAMENT
By Loretta Gehman
The Sabal Springs Ladies Golf Association (SSLGA) hosted its first tournament — the Ceil Norwicke Memorial Tournament — of the 2024-2025 winter season on Nov. 13 and Nov. 14, 2024. A total of 48 ladies filled the golf course for the two-day event played under sunny skies complete with gentle breezes and doable temperatures.
The tournament features a match play format where two-person teams compete against one another hoping to ultimately win the most holes during the two days. As the golfers play a hole, the team with the least shots taken on that hole gets one point. If there is a tie on the hole, each team scores one-half a point. With the large number of participants this year, there were two flights of 9-hole players and five flights of 18-hole players.
The awards were presented to the winners following competition during a luncheon and meeting in the Sunrise Room at The Lake House.
Congratulations to this year’s winners:

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD!
By Loretta Gehman
Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, was the date of an historic event in Sabal Springs — the first ever golf course tour proudly sponsored by the Golf Committee and Michael Stewart, director of golf. Sixty residents of our community assembled on a brilliantly sunlit afternoon, climbed into 30 golf carts and were led along the golf cart paths by volunteer tour guides to see their neighborhood from a whole new perspective. Along the way the guides entertained the participants with facts about the game of golf and how it has to be played on our very narrow course. All of the fairways are lined with houses with a great deal of water hazards and sand traps along the way. The guides pointed out the streets nearby each hole so that everyone could figure out what hole their home was closest to.
Due to the overwhelming response to the event, a waiting list was started to get a feel as to whether an additional tour will be held in the future. It was very evident that everyone who took the tour came away with a better understanding of the pride our golf community takes in the well-cared for little gem of a golf course we have here in Sabal Springs. Michael and his capable staff do a wonderful job grooming this asset.
A $5 per-person fee covered the golf cart rental, and each participant was given a coupon for a free hot dog and a bag of chips from the staff of The Lake House at their Sunday Funday afternoon gathering. The tour participants were also given a voucher for a free round of golf courtesy of Michael Stewart. Hopefully, we will attract some new golfers to the course after they try it out and fall hopelessly addicted to a game that can be so rewarding and at other times so aggravating. But, as “they” say, golf is, after all, a four-letter word.
A big thank you to all who came out in support of the project and to the many volunteers who helped make the First Annual Golf Course Tour a grand success. Watch for information regarding a future tour this spring.
