WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
By Loretta Gehman
CORRECTION FROM DECEMBER EDITION OF THE BREEZE
Normally the SSLGA winter season begins in midOctober. Last year, due to the ravages of Hurricane Ian, the season couldn’t open until the first tournament in November, the Ceil Norwicke Memorial Match Play event that was scheduled for November 9th and 10th. The first morning of the competition, Lee County awoke in the throes of Tropical Storm Nicole. The ladies managed to play the first round under very windy and rainy conditions, but as the day progressed, it was evident that the following day was going to be worse than the first. Ultimately the decision was made to postpone the tournament until later in the season. But, alas, this year brought sunny weather with doable temperatures and very little wind making conditions perfect for some great golf and good-natured competition. There were four flights of eighteen-hole golfers in teams of two. There were four teams competing in the nine-hole event. In match play events, each hole is either won, scoring one point, lost, scoring no points or tied, scoring ½ a point. The best cumulative score for the two days wins the individual flight.
The winners were as follows:
“A” Flight 1st Place Faye Cantrell & Linda Hood
2nd Place Loretta Gehman & Donna Ireland
“B” Flight 1st Place Jo Decker & Sue LaPlume
2nd Place Mary Lou Collins & Lorraine Rechten
“C” Flight 1st Place Patsy Clark & Karen Jamieson
2nd Place Liz Jurocko & Eileen Linehan
“D” Flight TIE Linda Pechstein & Mary Richards and Mary Holten & Sherry Triptow
Nine Hole 1st Place Robin Fritz & Susan Roberts
2nd Place Sharon Croxton & Joy Melin
Following the second day of play, the ladies gathered in the Sunrise Room for lunch provided by The Standard. A regular monthly meeting was held following lunch. A special thank you to the hostesses for the event, Laurie Simkins, Anita Johnson, Arlene Roy, and Rose Whitehouse. Next up is the Christmas Funday and lunch on December 13th.
AMERICANS ON THE MOVE, WE IN SABAL SPRINGS TOO
By Cathy Ward
U. S. Census data says about 27,000 million Americans move every year, and the state with the highest number moving in is Florida, about 1,250 people every day, but it may shock many that about 750 people a day are now moving out.
Where are they coming from and where are they going?
Again, using the U.S. census bureau and Google as main sources, they cite California and Illinois as the states losing the most people and New York and New Jersey are also big losers. On the flip side, in addition to Florida, other big gainers are Utah, Idaho, South Carolina, and Texas.

It’s no surprise to most of us that we have more people here and more coming. In every direction. We see thousands of apartments, duplexes and single-family homes under construction covering acres and acres of what once was timber and vegetation. Traffic has also increased dramatically in the last decade, especially when the snowbirds are here from January to April.
Local Realtor Doug Knox, who has listed and sold about 300 homes in Sabal Springs in the last dozen years, said people coming here say they moved to be in a warmer climate, closer to friends and family, like the lower taxes, and good health benefits. “The running average of sales in Sabal Springs in the last 10 years has been about 70 homes changing hands,” he said. “I really believe Sabal Springs is one of the best bargains in all of Lee County, but there are lots of reasons why people move from here and other places.” Doug said the big three moving factors have always been death, divorce and failing health.
“As people age, they often want to be closer to their families and often their families want them closer, but often it is a case of economics. While some people here are multi-millionaires, others are living paycheck to paycheck. The need for a new air-conditioner, new roof or other appliance or increase in HOA fees can push them to the wall. They feel they have to sell and move.”
Doug said Hurricane Ian and higher interest rates have moved the numbers of sales lower. He expects sales this year will be about 40, rather than the normal 70 of the past decades.
“Hurricane Ian essentially shut down sales in this area for about four months. Buyers now are seeing much higher interest rates and having to shop harder to find affordable deals. That means it will be harder to sell homes as quickly as before when they often sold in hours. Sometimes then they sold the day they were put on the market. Sabal has always been a popular gatedcommunity and still is. We are in somewhat of a transition period, but for those coming here with cash, I expect it will be a buyer’s market for a while.”
Interesting facts from Google and the U.S. Census Bureau. California has the most people with 37.2 million, Texas has 30 million and Florida now has 21.7 million. Florida recently passed New York, which now has 19.8 million. California and Texas people make up 21% of all the people in the country.
Alaska is the biggest state with 665,384 acres. Texas has 268,596 acres and California has 155,959 acres. Size wise, Florida ranks 22. Density-wise, North Dakota has the fewest, Delaware has the second fewest and then Montana. Wyoming has the lowest population with 577,851 people.

JOKER’S WILD ANNUAL GOLF OUTING 12-2-23
By Mike Temme
Saturday 12/2/2023 Joker’s Wild golf outing was a beautiful day to play golf. We had 84 golfers and 10 volunteers who were ready for a great day of golfing and fun.
It was the Fall annual golf outing held every Fall for Women and Men. They all participated in a Scramble golf event with a few twists to make it even more fun and
Registration was at 8:00 am with coffee, water and donuts being served. With opening comments from Mike Temme and Dieter Winterle. A big welcome and thank you to everyone and especially the Volunteers and the Sponsors. Every golfer received a gift bag with snacks and of course Birdie juice (Actually alcohol, wine bourbon and fireball). At 8:30 am everyone headed to their golf carts and the fun started. One team started on the putting green for a putting contest with a twist they had to putt with a hockey stick. Oh my! The rest started on every hole on the course 1-18. Other games were played on the course as well such as, different strokes were counted. How many Eagles, Birdies, Pars and Bogeys was one game. Second game and everyone recorded how many tee shots went into the water, sand and out of bounds, (Seriously!).
After playing golf everyone met at the parking lot by the pro shop and waited patiently for the results.
The Scramble game was scored by each team, but the scores didn’t count. They drew cards out of the box for winners.
Prizes were awarded for:
Scramble card drawing (5) teams won a total of (20) winners.
Eagles, Birdies, Pars and Bogeys (4) winners in each category for a total of (16) winners
Counted drives into Water, Sand and Out of Bounds (4) winners in each category (12) winners
Closest to the pin competition with (6) CTTP holes (2) winners per hole (6) Women from the Red tees and (6) Men from the Gold tees. Total (12) winners
Putting Green competition (1) winner per team of (4) people (21) teams’ Total winners (21)
50/50 Raffle usually 50% to the winners and 50% to the house, today was another twist all the money collected was split into (4) equal amounts and given to (4) winners.
Total winners for the day: 81
The total amount of money given out was: $2080.00. What a day for the golfers’ biggest payout ever.
A big thank you goes out to the following people:
All the golfers who participated in the outing, Michael Stewart and his team for their efforts on the golf course every day to make it beautiful and allowing us to utilize the total golf course for the 1/2-day event.
Our volunteers: Judy Temme, Joyce Doherty, Dieter Winterle, Joe Klein, Frank Harris,
Rich Laab, John and Sandy Cocca, Tony Bacari and Dave Collins. Great job everyone.
Our Sponsors:

Donna and Bucko Blosinski
Dave Chandler / Chandler Roofing
Deborah and Dave Collins
Kim Dean / Comfort Keepers
Susan and Dwight Carittini / Post Cereal

A special thank you to all the elfs who volunteered to help decorate our community. Dieter Winterle and John
Cocca who did the front entry; Joe Vukelich who did the gatehouse; Sandy Cocca, Carmella Manning, Lisa Blier, Cathy Bowen, Cheryl Frailly and Christine Ziola who did the clubhouse; Len Hallesy and Joy Melin who did the pro shop; Jim and Sharon Croxton who helped with both the pro shop and clubhouse; Dave and Robin Fritz, Laurie and Bill Simkins who did the back gate.
Most of the committee are members who volunteer each year to help decorate and Sabal Springs is very grateful for their expertise. However, this year our community is fortunate to have several new volunteers offer their time and talents to the committee.
A special thanks to all of the volunteers for all their hard work. Sabal Springs has never looked better.

SALT SCRUB CLASS
By Mary Ann Baillargeon
On November 17th 23 women met at Linda Voto home for a class on making all-Natural Himalayan Salt Scrub. We personalized our own scrubs with natural essential oils. Our instructor Selena Pemberton from “Authentic Remedy” and her assistant Karen Snyder guided us through the process and provided us with so many different essential oils. Everyone went home with their own scrub they made. And, leftover goodies are provided by the wonderful Hostess, Linda.
TENNIS TALK
By Gail Blakeslee
Sabal Springs tennis leagues are now well underway and resuming weekly play after the holiday break. Our women's tennis team “Nickel” that plays on Fridays was recently ranked third among the 23 teams in their division. These ladies are strong competitors with a sense of pride in their team and teammates. To help sharpen their tennis skills, they have recently participated in clinics offered by Harry Silverstein of Herons Glen who is a women's tennis coach at Stockton University in New Jersey. These lessons are given here at Sabal Springs and
are well attended.
Our SWIFT women's team is also doing well as they compete against other North Fort Myers communities on Thursdays. They welcome supporters to stop by whenever there is a home match.
The men's tennis team is currently playing their matches on Tuesday afternoons at 1 PM and encourages residents to stop by and cheer them on. So far they have won six and lost six matches and hope for better results soon.
Just as a reminder, Open tennis for women is Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8AM to 10AM when no scheduled league matches are taking place. Men's Open tennis is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8AM to 10AM. Anyone interested is welcome to participate but remember that proper footwear is necessary. Hope to see you at our courts soon!
TOOTSIE’S ZUCCHINI BREAD
Recipe Submitted by Johanna Schoenberger
By Cathy Ward
One of Johanna Schoenberger’s favorite memories is waking to the delicious smells on Saturday morning of her mom and aunt baking mouth-watering delicacies in their kitchen.
“I remember it smelled like a bakery every week,” said Johanna, a Sabal Springs resident for the past 13 years. “I learned to love cooking from them. I remember the strudel, made from stretching dough to paper-thin pieces. They spent hours making it perfect.”
Johanna grew up in Chicago and worked for her career in the printing world. She worked for the Chicago Sun Times for more than 10 years. Her longest nights there were the day Princess Diana passed away and the tragic day of 9-11.
Johanna’s ancestors came from Austria and Poland, and she has enjoyed traveling to many places in Europe several times. She marvels at the beauty she found in Europe, but when visiting Eastern Germany, she found those who lived under Communism very depressing.
“They had so very little under Communism,” she said.
“I don’t know that many realize how they lived there for years. It was not a good way to live.”
Johanna has one son who lives in Chicago. She and her husband, Werner, have been married for 25 years. They came to Sabal Springs on the advice of friends, found it a very friendly place and planned to stay.
Johanna has volunteered on the Welcoming Committee and with the Sabal Springs library, but now is focusing on staying healthy, and you will find her in Water Aerobics in the Sabal Springs pool five days a week and general floor exercises two days a week.
Despite her background, she found she preferred making Italian dishes and now finds that ordering food kits that provide full meals with special instructions is a good way to make delicious meals a few times a week.
“The recipe you find here, Zucchini Bread, is from “Aunt Tootsie,” she said. “But it is a favorite that I am happy to share.”
Aunt Tootsie’s Zucchini Bread
1 ½ cup white sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour
¾ tsp baking soda
¾ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 ½ tsp cinnamon
2 cups grated zucchini
¾ cup chopped walnuts
Grease and flour bread pan. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour and 20 minutes.

LET THEM GLOW, LET THEM GLOW, LET THEM GLOW
By Loretta Gehman
Oh, the weather outside’s delightful
And lights are quite an eyeful
And since we’ve got no place to go
Let ‘em show, let ‘em show, let ‘em show.
As we drive through all the streets
Waving hello to all we meet
The lights twinkle both high and low
Let ‘em glow, let ‘em glow. let ‘em glow.
We see Santas and reindeer aplenty
On rooftops and in the entry
Now it’s time for us to choose just one Judging done, judging done, judging done.
When we finally do say goodnight
And it’s time to turn off the lights
The winners have now been crowned Kudos all around, all around, all around.
The 5th Annual House Decorating Contest was judged on the evening of Thursday, December 7th. There was quite an array of well decorated homes as always and the judges had to do some serious deliberating to choose the winners. In fact, in order to make the final determination as to places, the committee had to go out for a second look and deliberate once more. But in the end, winners were chosen. They were as follows:
• 1st Place Bruce and Linda Mack of 17840 Dragonia Drive
• 2nd Place Leo Pierson and Arlene Roy of 17843
Dracena Circle
• 3rd Place Roger and Sheryl Williams of 3428 Sabal Springs Boulevard
The Macks took the nutcracker theme to the max with two marching nutcrackers in the driveway with many others all around their corner property at Sabal Springs Boulevard and Dragonia Drive. Leo and Arlene had Santa in his sleigh on the roof and very traditional decorations tastefully displayed, even along the sides of their home. At the Williams’ “Christmas Tree Farm” passersby were greeted by Santa cheerfully offering free photos with the jolly elf himself and a sparkling elf serving hot chocolate and strawberry Jello shots. Although photos were taken of the winners, it is difficult to take nighttime shots and get the scope of the entire panorama to come out clearly, but congratulations to all of the winners and thank you to all who decorated their homes this year. Sabal Springs has awesome residents who put a lot of effort into making our community look so festive each year. Also, a special shout out to the committee who decorated our common areas so beautifully this year as always.
SWEET MEMORIES
By Loretta Gehman
As the house decorating judging crew was driving through the community looking at all of the beautiful lighting displays, we were struck by a beautiful antique truck parked in a driveway on Gloxinia. A big shout out to Charles and Kathy for providing a group of senior citizens with a sweet walk down memory lane as they gazed at the 1954 Chevrolet pick up truck so cleverly decorated and proudly displayed in their driveway.
NO, IT CAN’T BE TRUE?
By Loretta Gehman
No, it can’t be time for the Christmas Parade already? No, it can’t be true? No, the clubhouse must close? No, it can’t be true? But how can we go on with the plans to feed two hundred band, JROTC and cheerleading squad members without our clubhouse? We will have to cancel it this year. No, it can’t be true?
Well, the Sabal Springs community and its stalwart residents showed them on the night of December 9, 2023, what happens when we get told, “no”! The show had to go on to lift the sagging spirits of this wonderful place and so it did and in grand fashion I might add. Yes, there was no fire truck.Yes, there was no Sheriff’s department motorcycle. Yes, there was no North Fort Myers High School band or cheerleaders. But YES, there were thirtyeight beautifully decorated golf carts resplendent in their green and red flashing lights, snowmen on rooftops, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and all things with a Christmas theme.
Yes, there were dogs aplenty helping their humans drive the carts. I spotted Joseph and Mary and the baby Jesus. And, I spotted the Grinch himself in the Lee County jail. And there was Christmas music playing from most of the carts to help make the parade more meaningful and parade-like. We showed everyone what we are made of when the chips don’t fall our way here in Sabal Springs. We rise up and have a great night in spite of adversity. We hope those of you along the parade route enjoyed our 2023 abbreviated version of the parade. The participants did an amazing job with their decorations as always and we managed to raise funds for the North Fort Myers High School Music Department and JROTC. At the moment of this printing deadline, we are still tabulating the final amount to be donated.
Following the parade, we were entertained by Mike Glean who graciously agreed to play on the portico for tips only. As always, his music was pleasing to the ear and got the crowd on the dance floor.
No, it can’t be true…another Christmas parade has been put to rest!
