HP’s annual Labor Day Scramble was held Monday morning, September 2, on the Sabal course. The 125-player field was divided into five flights, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places earning $100, $80, and $45 respectively per team in Pro Shop credit. Teams also competed for skins in each flight, with $100 available per flight.

After 25 years of hurricanes, storms, and wear and tear, our old maintenance shed was torn down in late August, and replaced with a more modern and efficient shed.
Both tennis and Kevin’s maintenance crews tore down the “Green Monster.” Laborers from Tuff Shed installed a new 12’ X 14’ shed, which is now the same color as the adjacent restrooms. The new shed is larger, which allows the much-needed extra storage space for our cases of tennis balls and other supplies previously cluttering the Pro Shop.
The shed will also be used to store our ball machines, tennis baskets, hoppers, and miscellaneous tools and general maintenance supplies. It’s a much-needed face lift for the tennis department!

As I mentioned in the September issue, Between the Palms is going digital! Our publisher, Seabreeze Communications, will no longer be producing a newsprint-type format of BTP. The target date: the November issue. They’re currently finalizing an HP dedicated website with a flip-book style reader for easy online browsing of BTP by our members. So, what are the advantages of going digital?
• Wider Reach: Any adult with an email address in HP’s data base will receive their own copy.
• Mobile Accessibility: BTP will be available on your laptop, tablet, or cell phone, whichever you prefer.
• Only one BTP per month. Since it will be in a digital format, there’s no limit on the number of pages available for

It’s been a very disappointing off season at HP with numerous permit delays needed to begin the Pickleball Expansion Project. However, it will not dampen our passion for the sport or our quest for completing this project, which the majority of members supported, and which was approved by the Board last December. The Heritage Palms Pickleball Association (HPPA) is a very active and growing association. The purpose of the HPPA is to promote the game of pickleball; to provide recommendations relative to the operation of the pickleball programs and maintenance of the pickleball facility; and to provide organized social pickleball events.
Below is a tentative list of the upcoming HPPA events. At some point we will add a “Grand Opening” for the additional Pickleball Courts and Tennis Court.
• Pop up HPPA Membership Signups at the Pickleball Courts (dates TBD)
•
•
• Back in Season Party –January 12 in the Palms Dining Room (Back up location: the Tennis Courts if unavailable)
• Tournament Dates:
o #1 Men and Women’s Round Robin – January 22-23
o #2 Men and Women’s Round Robin – February 22-23
o Mixed Doubles – March 9, in coordination with the Tennis Program for the “Gwen’s Wish” Play It Forward Charity
o End of Season Party – the evening of March 10 at the Tennis/PB Courts
Should you like to join the HPPA, simply call the Tennis/ Pickleball Pro Shop and they’ll add you to our list of members. The season’s $20 membership fee will be charged to your HP account.
We look forward to another busy, fun Pickleball season at HP. See you on the Courts.

The HP MGA is pleased to offer a full array of golf events for the 2024-25 season. Our Tournament Committee has put together a great schedule which includes a few new formats, along with traditional favorites. Based on our recent success, we’ve also included three Happy Hour gatherings for you to enjoy. Dues for the upcoming season are $55. Bag storage is offered by the Pro Shop for a nominal fee.
We’ll again be utilizing Golf Genius as a scorekeeping tool for our tournaments. We encourage you to get comfortable with the app, although the signed, paper scorecard will continue to serve as the official scorecard.
By now you’ve received an email link from the Pro shop to officially sign up for our league. It included three different choices of tees: White, Silver, or Gold. Golf Genius sign-up will be open through October 31. After that, all former and new members can sign up in the Pro Shop. Please join us for what promises to be an enjoyable season of competition and camaraderie.
Each week, the Pro Shop will send a Golf Genius invitation to register for the following week’s tournament.
We’d like to thank the following three outgoing MGA Board members for their time and commitment: Al Kaminski, Tom Wentz, and Joe Vescio.
The MGA is happy to introduce our three new Board members: Jim Cooney, Jeff Paul, and Dave Koth.
From Al Zirkle: In late July I took my first trip with Road Scholar to see several National Parks out west. We had a big group of 39. We traveled in a very pleasant motor coach and did a big loop through the parks. The most memorable places we visited were Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Badlands, Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole, and Devils Tower. We had a great time and made a lot of new friends.
From Lynda Dechert: My husband, Ed, and I had a wonderful time visiting four countries on our Viking riverboat trip in August. We started in Amsterdam and ended in Basel, Switzerland with a two-day extension in Lucerne, Switzerland. International travel isn’t easy, but the history and sites are well worth the effort. It was a great trip!

Cathy White: On July 16, nine HP ladies attended the Paris Gold Olympic themed member guest event held at Meadowbrook Golf course north of Toronto, Ontario. Unfortunately, three inches of rain in three hours closed the course, however, we had fun at the inside event.
The HP Book Club will begin the 2024-25 season on Friday, October 25, at 2:30 p.m. We will discuss The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger. In the novel, Krueger explores the history of a memorable town and its residents through one compelling mystery: Who killed the town’s wealthiest landowner, a tormented bully, whom no one seemed to like? One reviewer wrote that this book is “…an excellent mystery but also so much more, making readers care about all of these flawed lives while unearthing painful truths nestled within small town America.” Sandy Wurdeman will lead the discussion. If you wish to be added to the book club mailing list, please email me.

Hello from the Golf Shop. October is here, and the season is fast approaching. Summer maintenance is scheduled to be completed shortly, with a tentative opening date for both courses of Monday, October 14.
Registration is currently open for Men’s & Ladies’ Golf Leagues. Everyone, with an established handicap in our GHIN system, has received an email with registration links for the MGA, WGA and LNHGA leagues. If you experience any issues getting registered, please contact us. The registration links will close on October 31. After that, members can sign up in the Golf Shop.
A sub-committee of the Golf committee met this summer to review our current handicap stroke allocation from both men’s and ladies’ tees. There was much debate last year as we instituted the new stroke allocations as recommended by the FSGA after our courses were re-rated. Extensive data was collected from Golf Genius which gave us hole-by-hole scoring from Men’s & Ladies league play. This was helpful information which
allowed for actual score ranking comparison to the FSGA data. As a result, we have made some changes to the ranking of holes on both courses for ladies and the men. The new rankings will officially go into effect November 1st when our new scorecards arrive, and will coincide with the start of league play.
Another new item on the scorecard will be the addition of a Red/Black combo tee. This combo tee will have a course rating and slope for both men and women. We’re happy about this additional tee, which gives our members another option to enjoy the game. This is all part of a focus this season on members playing from the yardage that’s appropriate for their game. Pace of play is crucial when we have such a variety of skill level golfers and play as many rounds as we do daily. Promoting golfers to play their appropriate tees will help golfers have more fun and play faster.
A few event reminders for the upcoming months. Sign up is still available on Chelsea for the 9th Annual HPVA Golf Tournament on October 27. Also, registration is still open for the 2024 Ladies Member Guest on November 11. Please contact the Golf Shop for more event details or to get signed up.
The entire golf staff is excited and ready for a great season ahead. I look forward to seeing you all soon!
The Laughter Club is hosting Ross Bennett on November 16 in the Palms Dining Room. Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. Price is $45 per person. Simply sign up on our website’s Club Calendar.
Ross Bennett was born in Hornell, NY, however, his family soon moved to South FL where he graduated from Deerfield Beach High School in 1973. He enlisted in the Army, and after Basic Training in Fort Knox, KY, Ross worked in Television Production before being selected to attend The United States

“I dropped out of West Point to Become a Comedian... probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country,” quips Ross. He left the Academy after deciding he preferred to take aim and fire jokes, instead of bullets.
Since that day Ross’ comedy career has taken him from New York to Los Angeles and all points in between.

If you’re looking to enjoy nine holes of golf with the camaraderie of friends, then this league is just for you.
Play is from the gold tees and keeping score is optional. It’s serious play, but focused on having fun. Tee times are each Monday and Wednesday around 1 p.m. Foursomes are paired through an algorithm providing a different mix of players on each play day.
The late Ed Eddy established this league in 2014. If you have an interest in being part of the camaraderie this league offers, then just send an email to our League Coordinator, Art Genutis at artgenutis@gmail.com.

As we make plans to return to HP for the upcoming season, we again realize what a beautiful community we live in. There are many activities we participate in within our gates, but have you ever thought of giving back to our broader community?
If you have, we have a wonderful opportunity for you! The Community Relations Committee will be hosting another Volunteer Fair on November 4 between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. in the Palms Dining Room. We’ll be hosting over 20 area nonprofits representing the Arts, Children Support groups, Education and Development, Health, and Human Services, who would all appreciate your time and talents. Giving back to your community is extremely rewarding for yourself and others, so please mark your calendar and come find out how you could contribute.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) says “yes” to single family homeowners, with the appropriate ARC application. However, only neutral colors are permitted.
The ARC advises that you get a knowledgeable professional to do your job, otherwise you will experience frequent peeling and chipping that may look worse than your faded driveway. You may also stain your driveway with ARC approval. Should you seal your driveway, you may do so without ARC approval. However, if you add a stain to the sealant, that will require ARC approval.

You walk up to your ball that is in the rough and it looks a little odd. It’s sitting down. Is it embedded? How can I tell? Do I get free relief even if I’m in the rough?
As with many questions about the Rules of Golf, let’s start with the definition of an Embedded Ball. According to The Rules, a ball is embedded “When a player’s ball is in its own pitch mark, in the General Area, made as a result of the player’s previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground.” I’d like to emphasize that the ball must be in its own pitch mark and is the result of the previous stroke. These are two important elements in this definition.
If the player’s ball is in the rough, how do they know if part of the ball is below the level of the ground and not just nestled in the grass? The definition goes on to say, “A ball does not necessarily have to touch soil to be embedded (for example, grass and loose impediments may be between the ball and the soil).” But for the ball to be embedded, a part of the ball must be below the surface of the ground, even if resting on grass.
A player is allowed to check and see if that is the case. Mark the ball and lift it, then determine if the ground is broken by the ball. Remember you are not allowed to clean the ball while checking. If the ball has not broken the ground, simply replace it and play on.
If the ball has broken the ground, Rule 16.3a(1) says that free relief is allowed if the ball is in the General Area, which includes all of the course except Bunkers, Penalty Areas, and the Green and Teeing Area of the hole being played. Relief is a simple process most of the time. The relief point is directly behind the ball and must be in the General Area. The player must drop a ball within one club length on the reference point, no closer to the hole. Once the ball comes to rest within the relief area the procedure is complete, and the player may continue.
What if the area directly behind the ball is not in the General Area? It might be directly over a bunker or in front of a line defining a penalty area or out of bounds. As outlined in Clarification 16.3b/1, the Rules now allow you to find the nearest spot in the General Area and use that as a reference point.
Here is this month’s golf etiquette tip: While a player is taking his/her shot, all other players should be standing completely still.
