Out of Africa HPPA News

My husband, Bob, and I joined 18 other HP members, who, along with Bob Kelly, Director of Golf, and Larry German, Food & Beverage Director, experienced an unforgettable trip to South Africa in May. It was a tour conducted by Pro Golf Africa Safaris (https://www. progolfsafaris.com/).
The accommodations and staff at all the locales we visited were over the top, as were the beautiful scenery and weather.

The Minot US OPEN Pickleball Championship was held in Naples April 13-20. It’s been described as “the most prestigious tournament in the sport and the biggest Pickleball Party in the world.” Pickleball Magazine describes it as the “Tourney of the People.” According to the Minot website, people came to the OPEN this year from all 50 states, American Samoa, and from 31 countries around the world. They ranged in age from 8 to 88.
Over 3,250 players competed and 50,000+ people watched.

Proudly, two of our own HP residents contended this year: Ted Boynton and Kitsy Baumgartner. Ted competed with his partner, Dave Atkinson from Pelican Preserve, and they took the GOLD at skill level 3.5, ages 75-79 competing against 12 other teams from the U.S. and Canada. Ted has always played tennis and still plays for one of the HP tennis teams. However, five years ago decided to focus on Pickleball and shared that he enjoys it immensely. When asked what he likes most he said, “the competition and social aspect, as well as, unlike tennis, you don’t have to donate two hours playing with the same folks but can drop in and play with different people for as long or as little as you like.”

Staying Connected
By Jane Breisch, Editor cvgolfers@gmail.com

Happy July 4th! It’s only fitting I share a little trivia regarding the holiday. The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 men representing 13 colonies. The average age of those who signed was 45. Thomas Lynch, Jr. of SC was the youngest at 27. Ben Franklin of PA at 70 was the oldest. Thomas Jefferson was only 33. The population

Following golf, players gathered in the Palms Dining Room to enjoy the air conditioning and a scrumptious buffet.
Cheyanne Baker set up a table for the Fallen Soldier as a reminder of what Memorial Day commemorates. The plaque reads: “On this Memorial Day We Honor the Fallen Soldier. This table is reserved to honor our brave and selfless American military members who have perished on the battlefield, those who have not been returned to us after being taken prisoner on foreign soil, and for those that went missing and have not found their way back home.”

in the colonies was 2.5 million in 1776. Fireworks were first used to celebrate the signing on the first anniversary. July 4th wasn’t declared a national holiday until 1870, almost 100 years after the Declaration was signed. Lastly, the stars on the original American flag were in a circle so all the Colonies would appear equal.

Rising above the shores of the Caloosahatchee River is Vista Cay, a collection of sophisticated waterfront residences featuring awe-inspiring vistas. For a limited time, future residents can choose their views and enjoy Shell Point’s resort amenities and award-winning lifecare while building is underway. This rare opportunity to select a new construction residence in Shell Point’s most renowned neighborhood won’t last long. Take a virtual tour, register for a seminar, or request an appointment by visiting MeetVistaCay.org.

We spent four nights in George at the Fancourt Manor House; five nights at Table Bay Hotel on the waterfront in Cape Town with stunning views of Table Top Mountain; and four nights at Jock Safari Lodge in the heart of Kruger National Park.
We played five rounds of golf at four of the top five rated courses in the country; visited the town of Stellenbosch; toured (and imbibed at) Ernie Els Wines; took a gondola up Table Top Mountain to enjoy the stunning views; and did a Cape Peninsula tour including the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, Cape Point, and Boulders Beach to see the African penguin colony.
When we arrived at Kruger National Park, we experienced 6+ safari game drives in covered 4×4 Land Cruisers conducted by highly experienced rangers. We saw many species of mammals… male and female lions with their cubs, elephants, leopards, cape mountain zebras, black and white rhinos, cape buffalo, wildebeests, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, kudus, warthogs, springboks, impalas, spotted hyaenas, baboons, and vervet monkeys.
Another group of HP members are heading to South Africa with Pro Golf again in October. If interested in pursuing a future trip, please see Bob Kelly.
MANY more photos from Africa will appear in the July BTP EXTRA.

Driving Safely Around Heritage Palms
By Dave Cargill, Safety Committee Chair cargillclan@comcast.net

The general speed limit in Heritage Palms is 25 mph.
There are so many active pedestrians, golf carts, bicyclists, pet walkers, and seniors, that we need to be aware of the road, the sidewalks, and each other.
The streets in HP are under the auspices of the City of Fort Myers – all applicable laws are to be followed and are enforceable.

Let’s be mindful of our speed to protect ourselves, and all our friends and neighbors within our gates. Safety first!!

A player’s tee shot on hole seven on the Royal golf course is hit high and to the right. The ball is headed to the penalty area or it might be going out of bounds. You don’t find your ball. Do you have to go back to the tee and play for a lost ball out

of bounds, or do you play your next stroke from where you crossed the red penalty area line?
Here at Heritage Palms, we have a Local Rule that is not on the score card. If you don’t know if your ball ended up in a penalty area, or out of bounds, this is what you should do. You would consider your ball in the penalty area and take relief for a ball in a penalty area.
Here is this month’s golf etiquette tip: Please put your cell phone on silent while playing your round of golf.

Kitsy Baumgartner is an avid golfer here at HP, and took up Pickleball about eight years ago. She and her partner, Tim Scholenberger from Marina Bay, competed at the 3.5 level, 65-70 age group. There were 28 teams in their bracket and they did very well, coming in 16th. She shared that the diversity of activity, greater exercise, and outside fun, were the reasons she took up Pickleball. When asked what she likes most she said, “you meet a lot of nice people.”
As HP adds additional courts and opportunities to play pickleball, it’s likely we’ll see more participation in tournaments in SWFL and the opportunity to compete in local leagues.
The HPPA would like to congratulate Mike Lawver, Director of Tennis and Pickleball, on his upcoming retirement. Mike has been with HP 24+ years, and was instrumental in getting the Pickleball Program started here, and the passing of the Pickleball Extension Project. In retirement he plans to play a lot of golf and tennis, and spend time with family. Congratulations to Chad Dyer, Head Tennis/Pickleball Professional, for his promotion to Director. It’s an exciting time for Pickleball at HP! See you all on the courts!

The Palms Dining Room was decorated in a South of the Border theme on Friday, May 24. 88 HP members gathered for Mexican vittles and to dance to the music of Mirage. A fun time was had by all!

Tom Lonergan Shoots Less Than His Age!
By Tom Lonergan tlonergan88@gmail.com

On Saturday, May 25, I shot a 68, one stroke below my age. That’s the first time I shot my age (or better). I played from the white tees on Sabal with Mya Swe, Bob Wittman, and Bob Miller, in a summer Highwaymen event. I had six birdies and our team quota score was +16. We were sure we won the day; however, Dan Camarata and his team came in +20! Ridiculous. We settled for 2nd but were happy with the day. My handicap is 5.
Historically, I grew up as a tennis player, but I always had a little time for golf. After my wife, Pat, and I met in the 1980’s, we enjoyed golf together and started playing competitively. Pat hadn’t played much, but she learned quickly and we both started signing up for all the state golf tournaments. We signed up for everything that we could, both individual and couples’ events in NY and NJ, then after moving to the Washington D.C. area, we played in state events in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia. A nice advantage of the state association events was the ability to play the best private courses in those areas. And they were fabulous. There was no other way to get on the very prestigious courses such as Baltusrol, Plainfield, Congressional, Columbia, etc. We didn’t win the tournaments, but we had a blast doing it.

This is Bill’s 6th hole-inone!

One time we stopped on our way south to try and play at a nice golf course in Roanoke, VA. Pat came back to the car and said the bad news was there were no tee times available, but the good news was we’re signed up for a couple’s scramble event in ten minutes. We played in the event, won it, collected a few pro shop items from our winnings, and hopped back on the interstate to resume our trip south. Wonderful people there … they said come back anytime. We thought perhaps we could make a career out of this.
We moved to HP in 2012 and have been full timers ever since. My 98-year-old mom lives at an assisted living facility in North Naples and my brother is an attorney in Fort Myers. The summers are hot but the grass grows well and the courses are in fantastic condition.
Editor’s note: Pat and Tom are still winning tournaments! Just this season, they won HP’s 2024 Mixed Club Championship.

Trudy Turns 93
By Nancy Bouthilette nancybou49@gmail.com
A group of Trudy Cleary’s close friends honored her with a birthday luncheon at Christoff’s restaurant. Celebrating her 93rd birthday, Trudy was surprised, and kept us all laughing with her witty comments and stories. As a gift to her, Joanne Jungclaus wrote the following poem which describes Trudy to a tee….
There is a sweet lady named Trudy
Who is friendly to all, never snooty
She’s gifted of wit
Makes us roar in a fit
All this plus she’s also a beauty.
