Thank You For Your Kindness

Rich and I would like to thank all of you for the compassion we have received upon the passing of our son, Christopher Tsoulos. The prayers, the flowers and cards, the gentle hug, and the quiet word of condolence mean more than you can ever know. The priest described Chris as living joyously and kind. Through all the kindnesses you have shown to us, Chris’ joy and kindness live on. Thank you!

Bestselling Authors Headed To Fort Myers This March

Lee County Library System will be bringing in more than two dozen authors for the 26th annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival this March. Authors for all ages are coming to Fort Myers to showcase their books and meet fans from

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2025. The free event will be held on the beautiful outdoor campus of the Fort Myers Regional Library, located at 2450 First St. downtown.

The Southwest Florida Reading Festival is a time-honored tradition in the community, with attendees coming back year after year to hear author presentations and have their books signed. This outdoor celebration gives fans the opportunity to meet and greet a diverse lineup of bestselling

authors, participate in arts and crafts and discover the latest books and digital resources offered by the library. There will also be food truck vendors, storytelling programs, youth writing award presentations and a free book given away for every child and teen attending the event.

“The Lee County Library System is honored to share the power of reading with the community, and this year’s authors won’t disappoint!” states Melissa Baker, Festival Coordinator.

The lineup of award-winning talent includes a mix of authors from all genres, from crime thrillers and mysteries to cozy fiction and romance. Youth authors will feature teen fantasy, thrillers and rom coms, along with picture books, easy readers, chapter books and nonfiction.

These are just a few of the highly anticipated writers that will be a part of the event:

Reed Farrel Coleman is The New York Times bestselling author of over 30 novels, including six in the Jesse Stone series for the estate of the late Robert B. Parker. He

Lisa Genova is a Harvard educated neuroscientist and The New York Times bestselling author of numerous books, including Still Alice which was adapted into an Oscar–winning film starring Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin and Kristen Stewart. Her TED talks on Alzheimer’s disease and memory have been viewed over eleven million times.

Her work has been published in more than 20 countries and taught in schools across the world. All of her novels are in development for film and television.

Returning festival author and fan favorite

Debbie Macomber is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and one of today’s most popular writers with more than 200 million copies of her books in print worldwide. Macomber’s novels have spent more than 1,000 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, with 15 hitting the #1 spot. Celebrated as “the official storyteller of Christmas,” Macomber’s annual Christmas books are beloved and six have been crafted into original Hallmark Channel movies.

The Lee County Library System is honored to share the power of reading with the community, and this year’s authors won’t disappoint!

YOUTH AUTHORS

Renée Ahdieh is the #1 New York Times and internationally bestselling young adult author of The Wrath & the Dawn series, the Flame in the Mist series and The Beautiful quartet. Emilio Sloth’s Modern Manners is her debut children’s picture book.

Molly Idle is the Caldecott Honor-winning creator of the picture book Flora and the Flamingo and a flock of books featuring Flora and her Feathered Friends. She is also the author and illustrator of the mermaid tales Pearl and Coral. Her most recent picture books are Witch Hazel and I Don’t Care.

ArtFest Fort Myers High School Art Competition – Art Under 20

In this rapidly evolving world, it is more important than ever to keep challenging opportunities available to our community’s students. Their education needs to create skills and knowledge that connect in evolving ways. The arts – visual and performing –fulfill that need.

Art Under 20 was created through ArtFest Fort Myers’ dedication to the fact the arts are essential to the complete education of our youth. The arts teach students innumerable lessons – that are critical to success in the everevolving creative economy that lies ahead. The arts teach youth that there are several paths to take when approaching problems and that all problems can have more than one solution.

DID YOU KNOW?*

Youth who participate in the arts are

• 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement

• 3 times more likely to be elected to class office within their schools

• 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair

• 3 times more likely to be awarded for school attendance

• 2 times more likely to read for pleasure

Continue the conversation! What is your passion for the arts as part of a complete education for youth?

*Americans for the Arts

Accepted research shows impressive benefits of arts in education – encouraging students to stay in school, succeed in school, succeed in life and succeed in work. Art Under 20 Sponsor Suncoast Credit Union supports the belief that arts in education is a vibrant part of our community and everyone benefits from it.

Art Under 20 exhibit and competition at ArtFest Fort Myers the first weekend in February provides a professional setting for students to display their artwork and compete for $10,000 in annual cash awards. Over the past 24 years, 5,500-plus students have participated from all Lee County high schools and have won $175,000 in total awards.

All Lee County high school students (public, private and home-schooled) are invited to participate in Art Under 20. Entries are accepted in seven categories: digital, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, 3-dimensional and art created using recycled materials.

People and organizations that believe in supporting art opportunities for our youth can support Art Under 20 in a variety of ways. Some include creating additional award categories, providing scholarship funds for winners, or

hosting art experiences for participants. Contact ArtFest Fort Myers for more information.

Art Under 20 Entry Forms and more information are available through all Lee County high school art departments or at ArtFestFortMyers.com/au20. The deadline to enter for the 2025 Art Under 20 is December 4, 2024.

Consumer Alert

ALEXANDRA HOUSE, PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND DIGITAL MEDIA INTERN

DON’T TAKE THE BAIT ON PHISHING SCAMS

Have you ever gotten a text or email warning you that something is wrong with an account online? Maybe it says your streaming account is about to be suspended unless you respond quickly. It might even have a link that will supposedly fix your account’s problems. The message looks real. But is it?

Your first instinct might be to click to solve your problems. Don’t click. There’s likely nothing wrong. Instead, it might be a phishing scam. That’s when scammers pose as well-

known companies to get you to give up sensitive information via text or email. A phishing email might:

• say they’ve noticed some suspicious activity or login attempts—they haven’t.

• claim there’s a problem with your account or your payment information—there isn’t.

• say you need to confirm some personal or financial information—you don’t.

While real companies might send you emails or text messages, they won’t do things like send a link to update your payment information. Only scammers do that. Even opening a link in an unexpected text or email can expose you to scammers—even if you don’t enter any sensitive info.

So, don’t click on any links in unexpected emails or texts. If you’re concerned, contact the company directly using a link you already use or a phone number you know is correct. And if you think you’ve given someone your Social Security, credit card, or bank account number, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and get a recovery plan. If you clicked on a link in an unexpected email, update your security software and run a scan to look for viruses and malware.

Then report the phishing scam. Tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, forward suspicious texts to SPAM (7726), and forward suspicious emails to ReportPhishing@apwg.org.

Catch The Action

NOVEMBER ON THE WATER

There should be plenty of great fishing opportunities throughout the month as cool fronts begin to arrive dropping water temperatures. Fish are transitioning from summer to winter patterns both inshore and in gulf waters. It’s another one of those months that it’s possible to hook into about anything that frequents our waters.

Sea trout should be plentiful and feeding heavily on small baitfish, then as we near the end of the month and the water cools, shrimp and shrimp-type artificial lures could become the top baits. As we switch to shrimp, pompano

catches will increase as they only eat crustaceans and mollusks. Small bucktail and pompanostyle jigs work great when slow bounced across a sandy bottom. While under power, if you notice one or several fish skip off your wake, it is most likely pompano. Not sure why they do it, but it’s a great way to locate them and they run in schools. Circle back around and fish the area and you will often be rewarded.

November is a great month for targeting redfish and snook throughout our inshore waters. As water temperatures cool, snook are on the move from their summer homes around the beaches and relocating throughout

the inshore estuaries. If it remains relatively warm, they may be found feeding over inshore flats, oyster bars, shorelines, and sand holes. If it turns cold quickly, they will seek shelter in protected areas like canals, rivers, and shorelines with deeper water.

The large schools of redfish that prowled the inshore flats over the last few months move offshore or break up with the cooler weather. It’s still possible to run into a school, but most reds will be in pairs or small bunches. Look for reds tailing over shallow flats on the lowest tides and in the same areas as previously mentioned.

As the month wears on and the water gets cooler, large sheepsheads are on the move from offshore to near and inshore. Target them around structure, along the beaches, and around deeper oyster bars. They generally show up over offshore reefs first then make their way inshore and the gulf passes. Black drum are often caught with sheepsheads around inshore structure. Smaller drum are often caught on shrimp, but the large ones prefer a chunk of crab. Blue crab works best, pop the shell off and quarter the crab to get four baits. Like sheepsheads, drum are caught near pilings.

Bob Rauschenberg Gallery At FSW Presents

WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS AND LAURIE ANDERSON: LANGUAGE IS A VIRUS SHOWING THROUGH DEC. 7

This groundbreaking exhibition explores the concept of language as a transformative force, a carrier of ideas, and a potential weapon, as envisioned by the late literary giant William S. Burroughs and the pioneering multimedia storyteller and artist Laurie Anderson.

It delves into the ways both artists manipulate language to challenge conventional thought, explore the power of communication, and expose the potential pitfalls of information transmission in the modern world.

Open to the public, free of charge.

Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For additional information please call (239) 489-9313.

Visit Bob Rauschenberg Gallery At Florida SouthWestern State College, 8099 College Pkwy., Bldg. L, Fort Myers. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Most of the inshore snapper that we enjoyed all summer have moved offshore. Dropping light tackle over artificial reefs and hard bottom should yield a mix of tasty fish including mangrove snapper, grunts, and sheepsheads. Drop a live bait down on a heavy rig and stick it in the rod holder for a chance at a big grouper while fishing the light tackle. Also, expect king mackerel and cobia around reefs and tripletail hanging around anything floating.

Regulations and seasons are constantly changing on various species of fish, especially grouper and red snapper lately. Keep up to

date with fishing regulations before hitting the water by visiting Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission at www.myfwc.com. Also, upload the Fish Rules app on your phone. It has current regulations with pictures to help identify fish.

As the waters of Southwest Florida continue to cool this month, there should be plenty of good fishing to keep anglers busy on a variety of species.

GOLF CART RULES REMINDER

Gulf Harbour has had several incidents and issues involving golf carts. Reports have included underage driving, wrong-way driving, driving on pedestrian and bike paths, and driving under the influence.

Some excerpts from our Rules and Regulations:

Any member, family member, or guest may operate a motorized vehicle (i.e. cars, trucks, golf carts, motorized scooters, etc.) on Master Association property as long as the driver is at least 16 years of age, has a valid driver’s license, and has proof of vehicle insurance.

All golfers with golf carts should refrain from using pedestrian and bicycle pathways, if at all possible, especially if a golf cart path is available in that area and the golf cart driver is playing golf at the time. When use of a Gulf Harbour road is necessary, ATVs, and golf carts utilized for other than golf activities should be driven in the same direction as vehicle traffic and comply with all rules that apply to vehicles.

All Florida rules of the road must be followed when driving motor vehicles within Gulf Harbour.

Please consider the above when driving your golf cart at Gulf Harbour.
