Ladies On The Links

It Is Not Too Late To Make Plans To Join The Fun!

Fran Danek and Phyllis Wayco

As the “snowbirds” are slowly making their way south and the “locals” are tuning up their games, the Wednesday morning Ladies’ League is gearing up for another fun and competitive season. The league will again be headed

Holiday4Heroes

“We

Give Because They Give”

Who Are We?

Holiday4Heroes was founded in 2007 by Jonette Kessack, who owned a postage and wine store. This grassroots effort was started to fill a need to provide comfort and care to our deployed men and women all over the world. We are a group of team members, volunteers and business owners who had a desire to show our military that we remember them and appreciate their sacrifices for us.

What Do We Do?

What started as a holiday program, our first year sending 40 packages, became a year-round effort. We now send 100 to 200 comfort packages each month to our brave men and women, and 1,000 packages for our holiday mission. We have now sent almost a total of 20,000 packages.

this season by Fran Danek and Phyllis Wayco. We are extending a “welcome back” to returning players and a “welcome to the group” to any ladies playing with us for the first time. All are encouraged to join in on the fun. League play will begin on Nov. 1. We will then begin play at 8:15 a.m. with assigned tee times. Don’t forget to sign up in the ladies’ locker room in advance (by Sunday morning before each Wednesday you intend to play). The fee for the league is $25 for the season to be paid on the

To fill the need at home we have added more programs for our community to serve our in-need and homeless veterans and their families. Additions To The Mission

In 2019, we started our Backpack for Homeless and In-Need Veterans Program partnering with the VA and various homeless coalitions. Our backpacks are filled with personal care items, high protein snacks and information on where to get help.

In 2020, we began distributing bulk food drops to our inneed veterans and their families through the VA food pantry.

In 2021 our local VA Clinic asked us if we could help fill a need in our community. We were asked if we could provide

first day you play. Check the postings in the locker room for additional information regarding weekly games and results.

All handicaps are invited to join our league and you can be a part of the action whether you can play part of the time or the whole season from November through the end of March. Feel free to call Fran at (989) 684-0156 if you have any questions or concerns. See you on the course in November!

Holiday Season Creates Unintended Injuries

More Emergency Room Activity Occurs Between Thanksgiving And Christmas

The holiday season can be especially hectic for some, causing many to overlook critical safety issues. This is the busiest time of the year for many households. Unfortunately, the holidays also bring a surge of unintentional injuries and emergency departments are at their busiest.

An influx of visiting loved ones, social gatherings, excess alcohol intake, creating elaborate meals, and the hustle and bustle of the season can create unintentional injuries. Holiday decorating, food-related accidents, and food and medication poisoning can all pose an imminent threat in what should be a delightful time of the year.

The Lee County Injury Prevention Coalition is reminding us of safety procedures that we are all aware of but may not be paying attention to during the holiday season:

• Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking to avoid fires and burns – and do not leave the house while cooking.

• Keep children away from cooking areas to prevent burns.

• Use a thermometer to ensure food is cooked to a safe internal temperature, especially with turkey, chicken, and pork.

• Refrigerate leftover food items within two hours if there is a chance of spoiling.

• Check expiration dates on all food items.

• Frequent handwashing can avoid cross-contamination of food.

Holiday4Heroes from page 1

In 2022 we realized that some of our Mission Make Merry Families, sometimes, need a little extra help for emergencies. When funds are available, we provide what we can to help our families get through these difficult times with a little less stress. Please read about some of the things we are doing for our families.

Mission Make Merry

As the mission evolves, Holiday4Heroes supports our military families at home by giving them a Christmas filled with joy and less worries.

Every year we provide a merrier Christmas for local military families, who may be going through some difficult times. These families are recommended to us through the VA. The first year we started with three families. Last year we were able to help 23 families.

Fast forward to 2023, we are currently seeking donations and all the necessary trimmings to help our veterans’ families make their holiday season a little bit brighter.

• Remember that loose fitting clothing can dangle onto stove burners and catch fire.

• Remember to test smoke alarms and change batteries if needed.

• Keep floors clear, clean, and dry so you do not slip and fall.

• Visiting family members should keep medications out of children’s reach.

• Never pour water on a grease fire and never discharge a fire extinguisher onto a pan fire.

You can add your own list of preventable injuries, such as checking extension cords for holiday tree lights, not using candles around items that can burn easily, and designating a driver for events where alcohol will be prevalent.

Follow safety rules during the holiday season to keep everyone safe and out of emergency departments! You don’t want to waste your valuable holiday time with family and friends tending to unintended accidents.

The Lee County Injury Prevention Coalition serves as a collaborative effort or partnership whose function is to facilitate partners’ work and act as a catalyst for injury prevention initiatives. Its mission is to prevent injury, disability, and death through advocacy, education, legislation, and partnerships.

Additional information about the Injury Prevention Coalition and unintended injuries may be obtained by contacting https://www.cpsc.gov/Safety-Education/Safety-EducationCenters/Holiday-Safety, or by contacting Brian Raimondo at ipcleecounty@gmail.com, (239) 330-2240, or Tracey Thornton at tracey.thornton@leehealth.org, (239) 343-1618.

This year, through the tremendous generosity of our community, we are hoping to be able to include gift certificates for food to help out with Thanksgiving dinner too. How You Can Help

We are always being asked “what can we buy” or “what do you need.” Each and every donation is needed and appreciated! There are many ways to help: Attend events, purchase monthly raffle tickets, pick up a box and fill it with supplies, volunteer to help pack boxes, make a monetary donation to help with costs, become a sponsor, donate gift cards and much more. If you would like to help, please send your contact information to triciah4h@gmail.com.Tricia has taken over volunteer services and is an amazing addition to our committee. Packing dates are set and you will be able to sign up in advance!

Pedestrian Safety

Our county is growing and, with that growth comes an increase in the number of vehicles, more pedestrians, additional cyclists, and construction to alter, repair and improve roadways.

All of the aforementioned variables are capable of compromising pedestrian safety … especially for children walking to and from school and/or bus stops. As part of my “Safe Kids, Safe Schools” initiative, a safe walk to school, and back home later in the day, is a nonnegotiable component.

Cooking By Connie

What is November known for? November is Apple Month and Be Kind to Editors Month. It is National Coupon Month and National Piano Month. It is also Sweet Potato Awareness Month. I think you’ll like this recipe.

Roasted Sweet Potatoes And Bacon

3½ pounds sweet potatoes (5 to 6 medium sweet potatoes)

1 head of garlic

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon maple syrup

1 teaspoon sea salt

½ teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground is best

4 ounces bacon, chopped (6 slices of bacon)

Everyone is seemingly rushing to get somewhere … school, work, appointments. All too many of us have our eyes focused on our cellular devices, have headphones/earphones and are simply not paying appropriate attention to all that is occurring around them.

While most reading this message are adults, we believe that our many years of street crossing and neighborhood walking makes us immune to these types of accidents.

This couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Let’s begin by remaining alert. If there is no sidewalk, please walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. Walk as far from the roadway as possible and reasonable.

Stop signs and red lights do not guarantee that a vehicle will stop. Do not assume that a vehicle will abide

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a large, rimmed baking sheet. Slice the garlic head. Peel and slice sweet potatoes into ¾-inch thick pieces.

In a large mixing bowl, combine sliced sweet potatoes, halved garlic head, two tablespoon olive oil, one tablespoon maple syrup, one teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon black pepper. Toss to combine. Place in a single layer on the baking sheet with garlic cut side up.

Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes. Remove from oven, stir the sweet potatoes.

Sprinkle pieces of bacon evenly over the top and bake another 25 to 30 minutes or until sweet potatoes are tender and bacon is crisp.

Serve as a side dish.

by traffic laws/signs. Attempt to make eye contact with the driver and, in an abundance of safety, always yield to oncoming vehicles.

Exit vehicles, whenever possible, from the passenger side.

Pedestrians and cyclists should exercise additional caution in areas of road construction as traffic patterns change during the course of the construction and drivers may become confused or disoriented.

Crossing major roadways can be perilous. Vehicles are moving at higher speeds, may have blind spots created by large trucks and, when turning, may not see a pedestrian jutting out from behind a parked vehicle or landscaping. These hazards increase exponentially during the dark of night.

Time spent discussing these matters with school-aged children is time well spent. While they may feel insulted when you broach this subject as they are “grown up” and “know how to cross a street,” please remind them that even adults are susceptible to these sorts of tragedies.

“Season” will soon be upon us; more people, more vehicles, more congestion. Let’s all be alert and cautious as we approach the holiday season.

Mailbox Maintenance And Repair

For mailbox and lamppost repairs, please contact Tim Townsend, (740) 403-0983 or email timtownsend72@yahoo. com. Mailbox doors have a closure spring that eventually breaks after thousands of openings. It is important to replace them as soon as they are discovered as they usually result in a broken door, which is a much more expensive repair. The cost of installing a new spring is $34. If the door casting breaks, it costs an additional $112 to repair the door. There are also specially manufactured flagpole holders to match the lampposts. They are available for $89 installed. Your mailbox and lamppost can also be repainted for $49, which will bring them back to their “like-new” appearance.
