Thirty years of service residents and visitors to Southwest Florida communities in Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Hendry and Glades is being celebrated in 2024. The original trauma center was located at Lee Memorial Hospital in 1994, starting with a few trauma alerts. The number has kept slowly increasing.

Trauma is an injury caused by physical force. Two types of injury are unintentional and intentional. Unintentional trauma includes motor vehicle crashes, falls, poisoning, fires, drowning and sports injuries. Intentional injuries are caused by purposeful human action, usually referred to some type of violence, such as suicide, homicide, assault, rape and sexual abuse.
The number of trauma cases has increased from approximately 500 per year in 1994 to over 3,000 in 2021. In 2022 Lee Health Trauma Center moved to a new facility at Gulf Coast Medical Center. Trauma alerts and injuries have increased to 4,531 in 2023. Since 1994, 58,261 have been seen at the trauma center. The number will continue to rise as the population grows.
Trauma is a community problem. It kills more people between the ages of 1 and 44 than any other disease or illness. The typical trauma patient is an everyday individual going about ordinary everyday things. The most common trauma alerts are falls, motor vehicle crashes, poisoning, fires, drowning and sports injuries.
Studies of conventional trauma care show that up to 35 percent of trauma patient deaths could have been prevented if a trauma center had been available. Trauma centers are responsible for saving lives by ensuring that severely injured patients receive the care they need within the “golden hour.”
The trauma center relies on a big span of services, beginning with the 911 dispatcher, EMT, paramedics, EMS, and numerous other first responders. The hospital has a system of trauma-trained specialty talent that is ready 24/7/365 to treat life-threatening injuries. Once lifesaving measures have occurred, the care focuses on emotional and psychological side effects that affect an entire family.
The trauma center is a resource for the community to help raise awareness of injury prevention and safety. Programs include high risk drivers, young driver programs, high school drivers, youth violence prevention and driving safety for seniors
Gulf Coast Medical Trauma Center is the only Level II trauma center between Sarasota and Miami. Gulf Coast Medical Center is located at 13681 Doctor’s Way, Fort Myers, FL 33912. The trauma center works together with the Lee County Injury Prevention Coalition in serving collaborative efforts to act as catalysts for injury prevention initiatives.
Additional information about the trauma center or Injury Prevention Coalition may be obtained by contacting Syndi Bultman at (239) 330-3340, Syndi.Bultman@ leehealth.org.
Resilience And Rebirth: Fort Myers Beach And Sanibel Restaurants Rise After Hurricane Ian
By Gabriela DePalma
Eighteen months ago,
Hurricane Ian devastated
Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel, swallowing beloved restaurants in its surge. Despite destruction, locals demanded their return, leading to a culinary renaissance. Junkanoo Below Deck and Doc Ford’s on Fort Myers Beach, alongside Nervous Nellies, epitomize resilience, reopening after months of reconstruction. Margaritaville Resort symbolizes
the area’s rejuvenation, welcoming locals and tourists alike. While some businesses succumbed to the storm’s wrath, Southwest Florida showcases unwavering resolve. Amidst new establishments, restored favorites offer familiarity and the chance to forge new memories. As the community progresses, the spirit of perseverance remains unyielding, demonstrating that even amidst adversity, Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel emerge stronger and more determined.

What’s A Verification Code And Why Would Someone Ask Me For It?
When you log into your bank or credit card account, you might get a text message or email with a verification code. You then enter it at the login screen to confirm it’s really you. That’s a form of two-factor authentication that adds a layer of security to your account — and keeps would-be scammers and hackers out.
Your account password and a verification code work together, like the lock on your doorknob and a deadbolt lock. If you unlock the doorknob but not the deadbolt, you can’t get in. Likewise, if you know the account password but not the verification code, you can’t get in.
The same goes for scammers trying to get into your account. To break into your account, scammers need both keys. That’s why they try to trick you into sharing your verification code.
Scammers pretend to be someone you can trust, and say they’ve discovered a problem with one of your accounts — or that someone’s using your identity. They may know some things about you and sound very convincing. They may even be very sympathetic to your problem: offering to help you set things right … and then asking for your verification code to get into your account.
Individuals and families are asked to put unopened food items by their mailbox on that day so letter carriers and volunteer drivers can collect it. Food collected will be distributed by local food banks such as Harry Chapin Food Bank and Midwest Food Bank in addition to food pantries managed by local food agencies.
All food collected is distributed to the participating agencies at no cost. Virtually any kind of food may be donated in unopened, nonbreakable containers. Items especially in need are peanut butter, tuna, rice, beans, canned meats, fruits, vegetables and soups.

If you give them the code, they can log into your account and transfer all the money out of your savings or investment accounts.
Never give your verification code to someone else. It’s only for you to log into your account. Anyone who asks you for your account verification code is a scammer.
If someone asks you for your verification code, don’t engage. Hang up. Block their number. Stop texting them. Then report them to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
If you’re worried there’s a problem with your account, contact your bank, credit union, or investment advisor directly. Use a number you trust, like the one on your statement or in your app. Never use the number the caller gave you; it’ll take you to the scammer.

In addition, we contribute to many local charities and award two scholarships each year to senior high school girls who plan on furthering their education.
Meetings are usually held on the first Thursday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at The Hideaway Country Club, 5670 Trailwinds Drive, Fort Myers 33907. The cost to attend the luncheon is $25. Reservation deadline for June 13 is Tuesday, June 4.
Mailbox Maintenance And Repair

For mailbox and lamppost repairs, please contact Tim Townsend, (740) 403-0983 or email timtownsend72@ yahoo.com. Mailbox doors have a closure spring that eventually breaks after thousands of openings. It is important to replace them as soon as they are discovered as they usually result in a broken door, which is a much more expensive repair. The cost of installing a new spring is $34. If the door casting breaks, it costs an additional $112 to repair the door. There are also specially manufactured flagpole holders to match the lampposts. They are available for $89 installed. Your mailbox and lamppost can also be repainted for $49, which will bring them back to their “like-new” appearance.

Save Your Knees!
Many of the patients who visit our clinic for the first time, often tell me the same story, “My orthopedic doctor, who has been giving me steroid injections, told me years ago that I would eventually need a total knee replacement.”
My question for anyone who has had a similar experience, did your doctor inform you of the American Medical Association Journal, JAMA randomized clinical trial that studied the safety and effectiveness of steroid injections for chronic knee pain? In this study they took 140 participants with chronic knee pain and split them up into two groups. The control group got a saline solution injection and the treated group got the steroid injection. The injections were given every three months for two years. At the end of the two years they compared notes. The pain level for both groups did not improve much. It was about equal for both groups. However, what they did find was that the treated group who received all of the steroid injections had a significant loss of cartilage between the knee joint as compared to the saline group.
Since 1998 when I began practicing, I have found that the most difficult knee cases presenting in our clinic are the patients who have received multiple steroid injections
Please do not speed on Eagle Ridge Dr and in Eagle Ridge Community. The speed limit is 25 MPH. There are too many cars and trucks that come in and drive 35 to 45 MPH or more. That is too fast. The streets are narrow and there are people walking the narrow streets, they are walking their dogs and some are riding their bikes. There are sheriff’s cars located on some of the streets and will issue tickets for speeding cars and trucks.
Residents’ Comments
1. Tom Price: People are speeding too fast in the community. Let’s pay for a 4 hours Sheriff’s car to be in the community.
2. Resident Comment What’s the status on golf carts? Joyce Johnson—Golf carts must be insured and be licensed, and have the safety features of a car. Check out the website for more information.
3. Kelly Lambrecht- I see our Community Watch signs. Do we have this? We will see if we can get someone from the Sheriff’s office to provide info to the community again.
4. Carolyn Kaster—Question regarding gate at golf course maintenance area. A bit unsightly which can be seen from Triple Eagle.
Request a Motion to adjourn the meeting:
1. First Motion for Adjournment: Greg Lambrecht
2. Second Motion for Adjournment: Peggy Jermyn Adjourned at: 6:28 p.m.
Our next Board meeting will be held in May, 2024, unless circumstances arise that prohibit us from meeting.
in their knees. Now it’s proven to destroy the connective tissue causing the bones to shear together and resulting in chronic degenerative pain.
In our clinic we use a multimodal approach to optimize your recovery from chronic knee pain. Understanding that nothing happens in isolation, I will leave no stone unturned when I do my evaluation including a complete neurological examination.
Once I determine that you are a good candidate for the non-surgical operation, I will perform a functional neurological procedure that resets the communication between the brain and the body, changing the tone at the knee and allowing it to unlock and bend properly.
