Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are available at three levels - Intermediate, Advanced and Higher, with over 280 different Apprenticeships available across 1,500 job roles! Apprentices are paid and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Training consists of possible day release to a College or Training Provider as well as on the job training with a mentor. This ensures apprentices are working towards nationally recognised qualifications. Anyone living in England, and over the age of 16, not in full time education can apply. Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of qualification, the learner’s ability and the industry sector. All Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice minimum wage, however many earn significantly more.

www.alpsurrey.co.uk

Your training provider is usually a local college, independent training provider or specialist organisation responsible for your training. A mentor is assigned to the learner and progress is tracked in conjunction with the employer. All training providers are subject to OFSTED inspections and reports can be seen on the OFSTED website. Key Benefits: • Earn while you learn • Paid holidays • Full support whilst training • Gain recognised qualifications • Learn job specific skills • Enjoy great career prospects.

The Study Programme The Study Programme is for young people aged 16-18 who are less sure of their next move or what they want and need to help obtain this. The study programme can be vocational or employability based and includes Maths and English working up to level 2 (A to C GCSE). It should include work experience and career advice and guidance. The study programme could be the route way into a Traineeship, Apprenticeship or Further Education and Employment.

Traineeships This new programme is for young people who are ready to go into an apprenticeship but need some help. This is a shorter programme than ‘The Study Programme’ with a maximum length of just six months and will include real work experience with an employer and employability/work ready skills.

Traineeships will give young people the chance to develop the skills wanted by employers, making them more competitive when applying for future opportunities. The content of Traineeships will be a high quality work placement, work preparation training and English and maths.

This opportunity is suitable for learners aged 16 to 18 who are not employed or in education and who do not currently have a qualification at level 3 or above or learners aged 19 to 24 who do not currently have a full level 2 qualification. For more information, please speak to your local training provider or college.

What Next? The ALPS Network is made up of colleges, private training providers and other specialist providers who deliver in Surrey and across the South East Region. Each provider delivers specialist training which is listed in the following pages under Apprenticeships and The Study Programme. When looking for a suitable provider we suggest you check their website and explore online the areas in which they deliver. Your next step would be to call them to discuss your suitability for a specific course. Many providers deliver locally, as well as across a wider geographical area.

Our Preparation for Life and Work department offers courses tailored towards students who have mild to moderate learning difficulties or disabilities, and people who have no formal qualifications. The team works from brand new purpose-built facilities, and every programme leads to an externallyaccredited qualification. We have a strong focus on work experience, including our students preparing and selling food at our on-site café and two local churches, as well as a partnership with National Trust property Polesden Lacey. Past students have worked at employers including Screwfix, Chessington World of Adventures and The Longmead Centre.

SATRO

Study Programme SATRO inspires and enthuses young people about the world of work and helps them to fulfil their potential. We do this by bringing together schools, colleges and the business community; by delivering hands-on programmes that engage young people of all abilities. We also provide information about apprenticeships, work placement opportunities, jobs and careers involving science, technology, engineering or maths through our SATRO Club information service.

Sectors Our Construction Mobiles programme visits schools and youth centres to teach building trade skills. It reaches 400 young people every year. We bring all the tools, equipment and materials needed with us and a tutor from the building industry teaches basic skills in: • Carpentry/joinery • Plumbing • Brickwork • Painting/decorating • Electrical installation

Key benefits • Our tutors come to you. All you have to provide are the students and an accessible outside area for us to set up in • Students learn transferable skills, develop self-reliance and confidence and gain a recognised BTEC qualification • Schools benefit from the provision of an alternative programme on their own premises which has successfully re-engaged students who may have lost interest in academic subjects • For some this can provide a successful career route. Last year 44% of our students progressed to a construction related course or job.
