Welcome W

elcome to the 70th season of San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory and our annual Celebration of Music Education Concerts. These special concerts bring together hundreds of the region’s most talented musicians to share the joy and accomplishment of outstanding classical music with friends, families, and the San Diego community. Each season, all of us at SDYS aim to provide students of all ages and skill levels with unique music education opportunities. Every week, SDYS’ students come together to combine their talents and develop lifelong friendships through the bond of music. As we at SDYS celebrate our 70th season of outstanding music education, we also celebrate 70 years of partnership and appreciation for music educators from throughout San Diego and Southern California. Just as SDYS has provided seven decades of opportunity for musicians to pursue outstanding classical music, music educators have also provided these same students with decades of inspirational and dedicated instruction.

The students on stage today represent the very best and brightest from throughout San Diego County. In addition to their pursuit of outstanding musical accomplishment, they are leaders in their academic, athletic, and community outreach endeavors. We look forward to seeing them grow in the years ahead, knowing they will join our alumni in orchestras around the world, serve as master teachers, pioneering researchers, entrepreneurs and accomplish their dreams in other important fields. We are honored that so many parents and families have entrusted SDYS with part of their child’s education. Our faculty of professional educators, pedagogues, and musicians provides a comprehensive long term educational experience for all of our students. SDYS’ programs are designed to teach citizenship and responsibility, develop leadership and personal integrity, and to instill personal excellence through the group ensemble experience. This holistic approach to music education is what guides our programs’ focus on student achievement each season. Our entire organization of staff, board and volunteers is committed to providing significant and lasting musical benefits to students as well as bringing the joy of music to our audiences and the community. Today’s concerts are a celebration of that pursuit as well as a tribute to our partners in music education from public and private schools, private studios, and universities. We thank all music educators in attendance, and those unable to join us, for the incredible mentoring and training you provide students. We are equally thankful for the support our fellow music educators continue to show for SDYS. At this year’s concerts, we are proud to recognize Brianna Valeska, Julie Guy and Angela Neve as our 2015 Profiles in Music Education Award recipients. All three have made such a positive difference in the lives of thousands of students across San Diego County. In addition, they have been lifelong champions and advocates for all school arts and music programs in San Diego County. Thank you for joining us today and for your belief in music education. Your support enables SDYS to bring the life-changing power of music to all of our students and to the greater community. We are proud to have you join us for this tribute to music educators as we launch our 70th anniversary season. Enjoy the concerts!

“Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them — a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.”

“As a music therapist I am fortunate to be able to see the difference that music makes in people’s lives on a daily basis. No matter the age or ability level of a student, music can improve problem solving, develop executive functioning, improve motor skills and enhance memory. With continued strides in music research and community awareness we can hope that one day music will be an integral part of EVERY student’s education.”

“Music education is vital for our communities, whether it be a young child in a music class or an older learner playing an instrument for the first time. Music connects us to others in a unique way and brings different kinds of people together. Playing music helps enhance learning and development, boosts our immune systems, provides outlets for emotional expression and helps people lead happy and healthy lives. Personally, my life has been transformed by music education!”

Currently teaching at Grant K-8 School in Mission Hills, Brianna Valeska is a passionate and energetic music educator. She is currently in her ninth year of teaching for the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD). Prior to teaching for the SDUSD, she held teaching positions at Coronado School of the Arts and San Diego Music Studio. One of Mrs. Valeska’s many goals and priorities in her teaching is to prepare her students to participate in SDUSD’s Honor Band and Orchestra each year. Mrs. Valeska received a Bachelor of Music in Violin from SDSU’s School of Music and Dance under the tutelage of San Diego Symphony violinist, Hernan Constantino. Shortly after graduation, Mrs. Valeska realized her passion for teaching and returned to school to obtain a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music. Along with teaching, Mrs. Valeska has a wide range of performing experience including the Tifireth Israel Orchestra, Grossmont Symphony, SDSU Symphony and San Diego Symphony. Brianna is also an alum of the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory.

Julie Guy is a neurologic music therapist who graduated from Western Michigan University with a Master in Music Therapy. In 2004, Julie co-founded The Music Therapy Center of California, where she is currently Vice-President and Internship Director. In her work with youth with special needs, Julie co-authored the In Harmony: Integrated Learning Program. She is also co-host of “Autism Toolkit Podcast,” a resource for parents, teachers and therapists. Julie is a founding board member of Banding Together, a San Diego non-profit whose mission is to provide music experiences, mentorships, and instruments to youth with special needs. She has been a guest on the KPBS Radio program “These Days,” KUSI “Good Morning San Diego” and Fox 5 News. She has presented nationally for universities and organizations such as the Autism Tree Project Foundation, Kids Included Together, the Autism Education Network, and the American Music Therapy Association.

Angela Neve is a board-certified neurologic music therapist, songwriter and co-founder of The Music Therapy Center of California. She received her Bachelor in Music Education/Music Therapy from Wartburg College, and Master in Neurologic Music Therapy from Colorado State University. She has been working as a music therapist in the San Diego area for over 15 years with children, teenagers and adults with autism. She has published several products including the In Harmony: Integrated Learning Program, an educational product targeting speech and social skills through music. She is the music director of Kibbles Rockin’ Clubhouse and stars as Miss Angela. She currently serves as the Phase 3 Early Intervention Director for the Autism Tree Project Foundation in which she trains pre-school teachers on inclusive music strategies. She has presented nationally for organizations such as Kids Included Together, the Autism Education Network, and the American Music Therapy Association. 20th Annual Celebration of Music Education Concert | 3

Jeff Edmons is now in his twentieth year with SDYS. Under his direction, the Youth Symphony has experienced tremendous growth, both in enrollment and in its level of musical achievement. Performing the most difficult works in the classical repertoire, SDYS achieves the highest standard attainable by a youth orchestra. SDYS’ exemplary standards of skill and musicianship have afforded it the opportunity to participate in the most prestigious international festivals and perform with eminent guest artists and musicians from around the world. Under Mr. Edmons’ direction, the Youth Symphony boasts a strong international presence and sets a benchmark for excellence in the United States.

SDYS Concertmaster 1999-2001 SDYS Concerto Competition Winner 2000 What did you do after SDYS? After SDYS, I majored in violin performance at USC under the guidance of professor Alice Schoenfeld. While I was in school, I worked as a freelance musician in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas ranging from recordings for albums and films to substituting for major opera companies, symphony orchestras, and tour musicians. What are you up to now? For the past 10 years, I have been working mostly in the San Diego area, namely for the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, and the former San Diego Chamber Orchestra. In addition to my regular teaching and performing schedule, I am currently working on a project to combine my love for music with the growing demands of modern technology. What advice can you give to young musicians? Music has taught me that in order to become a good musician, there are no short cuts but hard-work and dedication. When the road gets tough, don’t lose hope or your passion for what you love. The industry has such a diverse range of styles and performers. Along the way, you will meet some incredible talents who will inspire you to become a better musician. You were invited to join SDYS on its 70th Anniversary China Tour. What was your most memorable moment from the China Tour? The China Tour was an incredible experience which I will cherish for many years to come. It was really good to reconnect with the alums and catch up on what they have been up to over the past decade. My favorite moment was hearing the current SDYS for the first time during the rehearsals before the tour. These students are incredibly dedicated and motivated in addition to being a group of amazing talents. The highlight was seeing their parents’ support throughout the rehearsals and the preparation of the tour. Their love and support played a major contributing factor in the success of the tour.

What did you take away from the China Tour? Music has the power to bridge any gap in cultural differences. For instance, at the end of every concert, the orchestra would play a traditional Chinese song “Da Hai” (which means ‘the Sea’) which everyone in China knows. After every concert, the positive feedback from the audience was overwhelming and heartwarming. It reminded me why I chose to become a musician in the first place. What did you learn from your days at SDYS? The most valuable thing I learned was to be respectful and understanding to fellow musicians. Always be wiling to help out fellow musicians because being a good orchestra is a group effort. I was too young to understand when Mr. Edmons said that to us after rehearsal was over. But I am really grateful he taught us that. I have kept in touch with many of the SDYS alums. Many of them hold prestigious positions in major orchestras throughout the world. It’s hard to believe that through music, I have made many friends who will be around for a very long time. I am an only child, but to me, my fellow musicians are my family. Is there anything else you would like to share? SDYS has grown tremendously over the years. I am really proud to say I am an alum. It is an orchestra that truly cares about the future of music and the well-being of its students. The things we have learned from our days at SDYS will always be a part of us.

Henry Fillmore Americans We Henry Fillmore’s march “Americans We” was composed to delight audiences and lift their spirits. The piece premiered in 1929, the start of the Great Depression, and quickly became a staple of Fillmore’s concerts at the Cincinnati Zoo’s shows. At a time before commercially available recordings and the radio, live performances of uplifting music helped Americans weather the storm of financial instability. Adam Pezdek Teaser #2 (Notes written by Adam Pezdek) “It’s true, all of it. The dark side, the Jedi, they’re real.” This confession comes from Han Solo in the third teaser for the upcoming Star Wars film, The Force Awakens. This December will usher in a new generation of Star Wars fans as the first live-action film in ten years is released. This piece is a transcription of the background music from Teaser #2, featuring one of the iconic themes from the original 1977 Star Wars film, A New Hope. Camille Saint- Saëns, arr. Andrew Balent Bacchanale In the late 19th-century, French opera had come to dominate and influence all composers of the time. Camille Saint-Saëns, unable to escape the influence, indeed to take advantage of the opportunity, composed his opera Samson et Dalila. Referencing the tradition of the first operas to turn towards mythic stories, Saint-Saëns uses the Biblical tale of Samson and Delilah. Paris, the epitome of high society and fashion, was enthralled with wares of other cultures, be they Persian rugs or spices from Asia. These tastes of the time are present in the music. This interest in the “exotic” can be heard as representative of the Middle-Eastern setting of Babylon. This kind of exotic flare found its way into the music of other contemporaries to Saint-Saëns.

Ralph Vaughan Williams English Folk Song Suite The “English Folk Song Suite” is a set of three pieces, based on traditional English folk songs. Ralph Vaughan Williams, a contemporary, close friend, and influence of Gustav Holst, would have heard Holst’s First and Second Suites for Military Band in 1911. It wasn’t until Holst’s convincing work for military band that Vaughan Williams ever considered the ensemble. The first movement employs an incredible complication, casting one folk tune counted in groups of two, against another tune counted in groups of six. The second movement contrasts this complexity with its elegant beauty. The third and final movement continues the tension between groupings of two and three, though only ever juxtaposed, not simultaneously used like in the first.

| 1pm Concert Henry Fillmore The Circus Bee James Henry Fillmore, Jr. was born in Cincinnati on December 3, 1881 into a family of composers and publishers of religious music. A somewhat incorrigible boy, he was bored with church music. He preferred more exciting music such as that used in circuses. Frustrated at being unable to influence the Fillmore Brothers to branch into the publication of band music, he left home. Upon his return after just one season of the Lemon Brother’s Circus, he returned home; his family’s publishing house agreed to publish band music. “The Circus Bee” was composed to celebrate the first publication of band music in the Fillmore Brothers publishing house.

CONCERT ORCHESTRA Juan Cristóbal Palacios, Conductor

Josef Strauss Feuerfest! / Polka Français The influence of Johann Strauss on his son Josef Strauss is unmistakable in his music. Josef Strauss extended the practice of his father through the composition of light concert works based on dance forms. This afternoon’s “Feuerfest! Polka Français” provides an example. Though indebted to his father’s career, Josef’s music also has clear stylistic differences, not least of which can be found in his choice of dance form. In the mid-19th century, the polka overtook the higher-brow waltz in popularity and eventually gave rise to the two-step and the ragtime. Edvard Grieg Norwegian Dance No. 3, Op. 35 Edvard Grieg is easily Norway’s most recognizable composer, both for his use of Norwegian folk tunes and for his sustained popularity. His use and development of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions put the music of Norway in the international spectrum, as well as helped to develop a national identity. Grieg is regarded as simultaneously nationalistic and cosmopolitan in his orientation. Although born in Bergen and buried there, he traveled widely throughout Europe, and considered his music to express both the beauty of Norwegian rural life and the culture of Europe as a whole. Leroy Anderson Blue Tango Leroy Anderson, an American composer, sought many of the same goals in his music as both Grieg and Strauss. His primary focus was on the composition of light concert works based on popular American music. “Blue Tango” was his first hit. In 1952, the piece occupied the Billboard chart’s top spot. Though today Anderson is best known for his piece “Sleigh Ride,” “Blue Tango” was his first major success. The influence of American jazz and ragtime can be heard married with American compositional practices from the time. The simple and straight-forward form of the work foregrounds Anderson’s elevation of jazz elements. Johann Strauss Sr. Radetzky March, Op. 228 The “Radetzky March” by Johann Strauss is a piece steeped in tradition and held particularly dear to the Viennese, even today. The march was composed to celebrate the military victory of the

20th Celebration of Music Education Concerts Program Program Notes by notes Ryan Welsh Dr.Ryan Sidney Yin written&by Welsh

Austrian Empire over the Kingdom of Sardinia. Part of the reason for the incredible popularity of the march is due to the use of an Austrian tune in the middle section. Reportedly, this tune was sung by the soldiers who won the battle as they returned home to Vienna. At its first performance for the Austrian military, officers clapped and stomped their feet in delight upon hearing Strauss’ incorporation of their own celebration song.

Edvard Grieg Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 23 Suite No. 1 features the best-known excerpts from “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 23.” “Morning Mood” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King” have both achieved pop-culture identities of their own. The first has been used in countless cartoons while the second has been covered by numerous rock bands from The Who to Metallica, and is the soundtrack to many video games. In a letter, Grieg confessed he loathed “In the Hall of the Mountain King” because “it absolutely reeks of cow pies, exaggerated Juan Cristóbal Palacios, Conductor Norwegian nationalism and trollish self-sufficiency!” It is curious to wonder what Grieg would have made of this “trollish” tune’s Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky enduring popularity. Cossack Dance from Mazeppa Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky had the unique experience as a composer Giacomo Rossini who achieved popularity during his lifetime. His popularity was Il viaggio a Reims Overture owed to the many successful compositions premiered throughout Giacomo Rossini’s method of overture writing has become his lifetime, including many of his symphonies and ballets. Even legendary. Invariably last-minute creations before the premiere, in contemporary popular culture, themes from his ballets have they were full of self-borrowing and usually had little relation to become recognizable tropes, like his love theme from Romeo and the opera itself. But “Il viaggio a Reims” was different—it had no Juliet. Unfortunately, Tchaikovsky’s opera Mazeppa was not one overture. Written specifically for the coronation of French King of his successful works, owed largely to inconsistencies of musical Charles X in 1825 in Reims, Rossini never meant for it to become quality. Though the opera has faded into obscurity, successful a part of the repertoire, and he reused much of the music in portions have been preserved. The “Cossack Dance from another of his comic operas. “Il viaggio” was not heard again Mazeppa” is one of those successes. This incredible piece of music until 1984. The supposed overture heard this afternoon is largely is the shining gem from the first act of the opera. a reworking of the dances heard in the finale of his occasionspecific work.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov Procession of the Nobles from “Mlada” “Procession of the Nobles” from Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera-ballet Mlada, is the most popular surviving piece of this larger four-act work. A master orchestrator, having literally written the book on the subject, he accompanies each musical theme by the perfect setting for the mood and character of the theme. At the opening, a royal brass fanfare pronounces the beginning of the procession; the lushness of the loud chords that follow is an example of his orchestral mastery. The main melody repeats, but the interest of the piece is kept by the constant variation of instrumental sound. While the piece is fairly consistent in its mood, contrast and excitement exist in the orchestration.

Ludwig van Beethoven Overture to Prometheus, Op. 43 The idea for “The Creatures of Prometheus” came from the celebrated Neapolitan choreographer Salvatore Viganò, who normally wrote his own music. For this work, however, which was to be presented for the empress Maria Theresia at the Vienna Court Theater, Viganò picked an unusually serious, “heroic allegorical” subject, and then turned to Beethoven for music of corresponding importance. Although Viganò assumed Beethoven had never written for the dance before—his slight, earlier Ritterballett had intentionally been passed off as the work of Count Waldstein—Beethoven had already proved, in his first two piano concertos, first symphony, and Pathétique Sonata, that he recognized that music was a dramatic language.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 in b minor, “Pathetique,” Op. 74 Symphony No. 6 was the last piece Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky ever heard during his lifetime. Just nine days after the premiere led by Tchaikovsky himself, the composer died. The proximity of these two events, the premiere of the symphony and the composer’s death, has led many to assume a relationship between the two. This assumption was only heightened when the piece was performed on a second occasion in memory of the composer at his funeral. Many mysteries surround both the work and the composer’s death, leaving scholars and audiences to make connections and assumptions of dubious accuracy. Though all the mysteries surrounding the work may never receive sufficient conclusions, it is clear that Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 is the result of a lifelong dedication to the craft of composition.

Jeff Edmons, Music Director

Gustav Holst Suite in E-flat Major, Op. 28 The wind ensemble is a relatively young ensemble when compared with other traditional groups like the choir, the string orchestra or the string quartet. Early versions of many wind instruments were unstable, out of tune, and difficult to control. By the time wind instruments had finally been developed to a mature musical state, the orchestra was already established as the preeminent ensemble for true artistic creation and expression. The opposite was true, however, of military use of music. Strings were too fragile and quiet to perform well outside, but wind instruments, always disparaged for their loud nature, found a home in military bands. This piece, Gustav Holst’s “Suite for Military Band in E-Flat,” convinced his contemporaries that serious concert music could be written for the wind ensemble. Bernstein Overture to Candide “Overture to Candide” can be argued as Leonard Bernstein’s most famous piece. The overture has far surpassed the operetta it preceded in popularity soon after the work’s premiere in 1957. Bernstein was among the greatest American composers and conductors during his life.

Jeff Edmons, Music Director

Jeff Edmons, Music Director

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Symphony No. 1 in c minor, Op. 11 In his youth, Mendelssohn was known as a piano prodigy. At the age of nine, the young boy regularly performed in chamber music concerts and frequently had his compositions performed in private. True to his prodigious capabilities, he composed his First Symphony at the age of fifteen. When Mendelssohn was just twenty, he conducted the London premiere of this work by the Royal Philharmonic Society. Despite the composer’s youth, Mendelssohn’s symphony is innovative and mature in subtle ways. Dmitry Kabalevsky The Comedians Suite, Op. 13 “The Comedians” comes from a set of incidental pieces Dmitri Kabalevsky composed for the play The Inventor and the Comedians by Mark Daniels, a Soviet-Jewish playwright. The play is written as a children’s play about a German inventor traveling with a group of buffoons. The play was performed in Moscow at the Central Children’s Theatre. The second movement of this work, the Comedians Gallop, is among Kabalevsky’s most famous and recognizable, rivaling his contemporary Aram Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance.” Kabalevsky’s “The Comedians” fits naturally among his work, owing to his lifelong efforts to connect children with music. Kabalevsky is noted for not only composing music specifically geared towards advanced aesthetic pursuits for the young musician, but also for beginning and personally teaching in a pilot program of music education in twenty-five Soviet schools. It is clear from the piece presented this evening, just how Kabalevsky was able to capture the imagination and curiosity of children.

Endowed Merit Scholarships Jeffrey Dan Sollender | Concert Master Chair Dotti and Joel Sollender met in New York City in 1957 and built their life together providing their sons, Jeffrey and Jonathan, with culture, adventure and love. Jeffrey’s tragic passing in December of 2002 at the age of 42 left a hole in the world around him. For Dotti and Joel, their mourning became a commitment to carrying on Jeffrey’s legacy of building the future. We are honored that they found in the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory the perfect home for honoring their son. When they decided to endow the Concert Master’s Chair in Jeffrey’s name, Dotti and Joel saw Jeffrey’s legacy alive before them. They recognized the combination of excellence and independence that Jeffrey exemplified throughout his life in this important orchestral position. They also saw in the Youth Symphony the promise for a future that Jeffrey worked to create for the benefit of everyone. STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS Carson Kemp Memorial Chair In the spring of 2007, the San Diego Youth Symphony family lost violinist Carson Kemp. She was a vibrant and social sixteen year-old who excelled in music, academics, and sports. She shared her beautiful smile with everyone and displayed her musical talents as a member of San Diego Youth Symphony and Philharmonia. In Carson’s memory, her mother Andrea Schwartz established the Carson Kemp Memorial Fund to provide an annual scholarship to a student in the Youth Symphony who mirrors Carson’s range of interests and outgoing personality. On behalf of Carson’s family, we thank all those who have contributed to Carson’s Fund to preserve her memory. This fund provides an annual scholarship to the French horn player who demonstrates the joy for life that Chelsea shared with us all during her time as an SDYS student. Chelsea was a source of positivity and light to everyone who knew her. She was an outstanding musician and individual. Through this scholarship, we hope that her impact will continue to be felt by many for years to come Recipients of Chelsea King French Horn Chair Scholarship: Jamie Pfauth – 2015 Jamie Pfauth – 2014 Patrick Chesnut – 2013 Patrick Chesnut – 2012 Andie Waterman – 2011 David Ryan – 2010
