On Feb. 25, President Joe Biden nominated Jackson, a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, to become the 116th Justice on the highest court in the nation.
“I’m honored to be sharing in this historic and significant moment in our nation’s history,” Padilla told California Black Media (CBM) in a telephone interview.

LOCAL ORGS MEET,
Demand Change Related to Inmate Deaths By Cori Zaragoza Staff Writer Two local organizations, the Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego and the North County Equity & Justice Coalition, held a press conference on the morning of March 22, in response to the Board of Supervisors appointing a new interim sheriff for San Diego County. The two groups were there to demand that the Interim Sheriff
not have control over San Diego County jails, and that an outside source appointed by the California Attorney General, Rob Bonta, to take over, due to an overwhelming amount of deaths that have occurred in the custody of San Diego Sheriff ’s Department. Led by Yusef Miller from the Saving Lives in Custody Campaign and the North County Equity and Justice Coalition, and Dr. Darwin Fishman from the Racial Justice Coalition

San Diego, the groups held a meeting in protest of the placement of an interim sheriff by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “We have a vote of non-confidence in the sheriff ’s department and any internal person taking the lead of the sheriff ’s department while we have a high rate of in-custody deaths, the highest in the state of California, compared to county’s of our same size. We want the Attorney General, Rob Bonta, to come in and take over the reform processes to save lives in San Diego County,” said Yusef Miller. “As of last week, two more people were added to the list of the total in-custody deaths that we have had, and it will not slow down, unless we have real reform. They have lost the trust of the community, they have lost the trust of the community organizations, and they have no trust from the families that have been affected.” Between speakers from local organizations, family members who have lost a loved one while they were in custody of the San Diego Police Department spoke at length of the loss and suffering they have endured.
