Thank you to Sergeant Koll of the SD Highway Patrol who ran the cornhole tournament. It was a huge hit! It started out slow, but by the time we got into it, 18+ teams were playing in the casino bar. They also played the first football game of the year on the big screen. IT WAS A GREAT NIGHT!

Mike Rush and Troy Bauder were the winners of the tournament. They both came away with a cash prize and a set of cornhole boards donated by IState Truck Center, Sioux Falls.

Captain John Broers presented the Partnership in Safety Award to Eric Williams, Safety Director for Blachowske Truck Line, Brandon, SD. Blachowske’s were not able to attend the annual convention in Deadwood, so Lieutenant Joel Peterson and Captain John Broers drove to Brandon, SD, to present the award in person.

This award goes to a company that is able to significantly improve their safety score since last year’s convention. We all know it does not take much to affect your numbers. Blachowske has taken the necessary steps to get their rating improved. This is the second time Blachowske Truck Line has received this award.

Rick Underwood named 2020 Chairman’s Award Winner

Rick Underwood started in the tire business at the age of 8… Yes, at 8 years old he started helping change tires at his fathers Chevy repair shop in Harrisburg, SD. As he got a little older he was helping his dad with auto repairs and tire work. At age 17 he got a job with Keeler Tire in Sioux Falls. He advanced to their retread shop first and then was promoted to shop foreman. In 1977 he was offered a job in Rapid City with JW Tire Company. He was in charge of the tire service truck that went out to the customer for service. He then advanced to shop foreman and from there he went to sales. In 1984 Dales Tire, Dale himself, approached Rick to come to Dale’s Tire. In the offer he gave Rick a new tire line and a territory that spanned SD, CO, WY, and ND. Many times his entire family would head east in the truck and visit friends and family along the way. Rick and his wife Jo have been married since 2008. Rick has two sons from a previous marriage; Adam and Aaron. Aaron and his family attended to celebrate with their dad. Rick has built quite a reputation in the tire business. So much so that they have given him the nickname of Rubber Rick. Rick approached Robert Christian of the Black Hills Log Haulers Association years back and told them they needed to partner with the SD Trucking Association. Because of that connection, Robert not only joined, but he is now the outgoing Chairman of SDTA. Robert took this opportunity to thank Rick for all he has done for SDTA and for the Black Hills Log Haulers Association.

Three of our four SD Road Team Captains were able to attend the SDTA Convention in Deadwood. (Road Team Captains Left to Right: Jeff Eschen, K&J Trucking, Inc., Sioux Falls, Gary Schmidt. Cliff Viessman, Inc., Gary, and Jeremy Senger, FedEx Freight, Rapid City. Missing due to Covid-19 travel restrictions: Captain Mike Whitehead)

What a Great Turnout!

JENNIFER RADDATZ NAMED 2020 SAFETY DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR

Jennifer has been involved in the safety industry for many years. Seventeen years with the SD State Patrol as well as fourteen years as a Safety Director. We have been fortunate at K & J to have her as our Safety Director for the past twelve years. She is a very dedicated person and very passionate about safety. Jennifer is active in the SD Safety Council and always volunteers to work and get equipment for the SD TDC’s. Jennifer was recognized for efforts by the Champions Club in 2015. Jennifer is not an 8 to 5 kind of person, she spends numerous hours conducting safety meetings, making sure our drivers, shop and office personnel are kept up to date on the new regulations and policies. Jennifer is always available if needed. Jennifer successfully transitioned our fleet from paper to electronic logs, not an easy job with 100 plus drivers. She continues to offer help, guidance and training for our drivers and operators. Jennifer is available to them 24 hours a day, taking calls from drivers anytime they need assistance. Many, many times Jennifer has taken a driver under her wings to improve their physical and mental health. We’ve had drivers come in after a physical in shock that their blood sugar is high and they don’t know what to do. Jennifer drops everything and takes them shopping, pointing out the food they can eat and the food they should stay away from. Same with those facing high blood pressure concerns, sleep apnea, anxiety, stress or basically anything that might impact the quality of their lives, on or off the road Jennifer strives to work with everyone so they can enjoy good health today and in the future. Jennifer has also improved K&J’s safety score substantially over the past twelve years. We’ve always made safety a priority but she’s taken it to the next level. Jennifer is a leader in the industry and has instituted and maintained a sound safety program that instills a safety first attitude in all of our employees. In addition, Jennifer is a resource for others in the industry and always takes the time to answer questions and help others with their safety program. To sum it up, Jennifer is passionate about people, safety and the trucking industry. She is the kind of person everyone would be proud to have on their team.

JOHN LYNCH, Senior VP Federation Relations & Industry Affairs for the American Trucking Associations spoke during the Safety Awards Luncheon on Friday 9/11.

TIPS IN TRUCKING: THE ASSOCIATION STAFF SENT OUT E-MAIL QUESTIONS TO SEVERAL MEMBERS TO FIND WHAT THE BEST THING THEY HAVE DONE IN THE PAST 10 YEARS FOR THEIR COMPANY. THEY WERE THEN ASKED THAT THE BEST THING THEY HAVE DONE WITHIN THE PAST YEAR. IT WAS AMAZING TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION.

The monthly winners of the Driver of the Month between September 2019 and August 2020 were invited to attend the 2020 SDTA Convention in Deadwood, to interview for the selection of the 2020 Driver of the Year. Above you see Glade Evenson, one of the three judges involved in the selection process, talking to the drivers before their interview. It’s quite a privilege to be acknowledged by your employer as worthy of this recognition. We are very proud of each of them!

Each driver was given six minutes to answer the same three questions. They were scored individually by three judges. Once the scores were tabulated, the driver with the highest score was named Driver of the Year.
