APORTRAITOF MARYD. We all have people w ho make an indelible imprint on us; some w ho leave a good impression, some w ho leave a bad impression, and those rare few w ho leave a mixture of both good and bad impressions. M ary D. w as one of the latter. She w as the Instructor in charge of the Skills Lab w here my w ife and I first w ent to school. She w as also the arbiter of ?The Dress Code?. Similar to now , this w as a time of social change, w here the traditional styles of our parents w ere giving w ay to shorter skirts, more skin, and a laid-back approach to personal grooming. M ary D. w as not pleasant! She intimidated all of those around her ? students and faculty alike. Every hair w as in
place. Her uniform w as immaculate. She w as the perfect embodiment of the 1960?s ideal of nursing ? only it w as no longer the 1960?s. She ruled the skills lab w ith an iron hand. She inspected every student?s length of hem, fingernails, and hair. She w ould send a student home for having dirt under her fingernails, a w rinkled uniform, or hair touching the collar of the uniform. Her w orld w as perfect and controlled. And then there w as me. I w as one of the first group of men in this nursing program. M y uniform w as different, my shoes w ere different, and my grooming w as different from the rest of the students. I had facial hair! M y fingernails w ere never up to par. So M ary D. struggled to accept this change in her w orld. M y w ife and I still laugh at how ridiculous some of her demands w ere at the time. But w e also still make a bed w ith
square corners that w ould pass muster w ith M ary D. and w e pay attention to how w e look as w e go off to w ork. We recognize now that w hat she w as teaching us w as far more important than those nit-picking details. She w as instilling in us a professional expectation and w ork ethic, a w illingness to strive for perfection even w hen no one is looking. Because you never knew w hen M ary D. w as going to appear on your unit to inspect you and your w ork!
