DRAMATURGS NOTE The Stories that Unite Us Do you remember the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001? Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play was inspired in part by the unsettling feelings those events produced. Two decades later, we all experienced an unprecedented year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We have lived through lockdown. We were required to wear masks and keep social distance from one another. Early last year, Russia invaded Ukraine, and just over a month ago, in response to terrorist attacks, Israel declared war on Hamas. Electricity in Gaza recently went out after its sole operational power plant ran out of fuel. Unfortunately, nowadays, many of us are accustomed to hearing about world crises, famines, wars, deaths, missing people, wildfires, earthquakes, and even a possible nuclear attack. What have we learned (so far) about ourselves in these times of crisis and uncertainty? When more catastrophes arrive, what do you think will endure and unite us as human beings? Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play, was written by American playwright Anne Washburn, (with a score composed by Michael Friedman) ten years after she witnessed 9/11. Her play takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where the electrical grid has failed and resulted in the meltdown of the world’s nuclear reactors. Although the play mentions nuclear power, lockdown, gunmen, and missing individuals, these are only the backstory but not the main point of Mr. Burns. In an interview, when asked about the point of her play, Washburn responded, “I think it’s about storytelling. I think it’s about how the story is retold and how it’s supposed to reflect who we are and helps to create who we are, both as individuals and as a community.” 1 In another interview, the playwright was asked to talk about the inspiration for her play. She said, “It was an idea that I’d had for a long time, to take a TV show and push it past the apocalypse and see what happened to it.” 2 The script development was collaborative. Washburn worked with the actors who were involved in the original staging. She asked them to recall episodes of The Simpsons. “Cape Feare,” the second episode of the fifth season, was the one they have the best memory of. This is where our play begins. In Act 1, we see a group of four survivors (Matt, Maria, Jenny, and Sam) sitting around a campfire and trying to remember the details of an episode of The Simpsons. The creators of the 1993 “Cape Feare” episode is a parody of the 1991 Martin Scorsese film, a remake of the same title, starring Robert DeNiro. The first few lines of our play are the exact words spoken by the actors during the workshop. Act 1 feels very similar to what we may have experienced at the beginning of the lockdown. We stayed home with our families, recalling fond memories, and most of us spent our time watching nostalgic old TV shows.


Act 2 of our play takes place seven years later in an airport. We see how the characters in Act 1 are coping with their reality by forming an acting troupe. We see the group rehearsing The Simpsons episode and a recreated commercial. These two segments, along with other snippets of pop culture (such as jingles and pop songs), have become the live entertainment in this post-apocalyptic society. We also learn that other acting troupes in the area are competing for control of different Simpsons episodes to perform. Act 3 takes place 75 years later, but there is still no electricity. We see a different generation of the acting troupe, who, despite having no access to technology, have built their sets and made costumes. “Cape Feare” has become an epic that is the basis for creating new forms of performance in this new society. Even though the play goes forward in time, director Jesca Prudencio interestingly chose non-Western, ancient forms of theater for the final Act of the play. AIKA TSUDA is a second-year MA Theatre Arts student at SDSU. Aika received her bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in Translation at Kobe College in Japan. She studied theatre abroad for one year at Bowling Green State University in Ohio during her time at Kobe College. Her interests are in musical theatre and translation in the theatre field. As she seeks to work as a translator in the musical theatre field in the future, she is interested in exploring the differences between American and Japanese theatre. Last year, she worked on The Long Christmas Ride Home as a co-dramaturg and Cabaret as a dramaturg. She is excited to be a part of this production..

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

In 2016 I was chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Julie Taymor World Theatre Fellowship to support my travels throughout Asia to study traditional forms of mask performance and puppetry. Julie Taymor traveled the world as an emerging director in the 80’s and used her inspirations from ancient forms of puppetry to create the masterpiece that is The Lion King on Broadway, which she directed and designed. This production has given me the great opportunity to explore what I learned in small towns and villages where people made theater from their bodies and the earth, without electricity. The cast, designers, and technicians have taken great risks with me as we create our own form theater…rooted in The Simpsons! When the pandemic hit and I found myself alone without my art form in 2020, I was forced to return to those memories of what we really need to make theater. Although this world that you will see tonight is a fictionalized postapocalyptic future where we lose the people we love and all the comforts of a contemporary world, the fears and wants were very real for so many of us artists learning how to cope during a scary time. The characters in this play use storytelling of The Simpsons episodes and performing them all as therapy. Theater is a human form and relies on connection between artists and audience. That is what you will feel tonight. In our production of Mr. Burns, theater is survival. It gives joy, humor, pathos, and sustenance. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

LOURDES ARTEAGA (Assistant Director, Ensemble, Jenny & Sam u/s) (She/They) is a current senior at San Diego State working on earning her BA in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Youth Theatre and Cultural Competency minor. She is a multi-faceted artist, working as a performer, teaching artist, director, and more. She has been a part of many productions, some favorites include Stoneheart (Diversionary Theatre), Once Upon A Brick (Legoland), L.S. Dead (SDSU Film), The Weight of Dreams (SDSU Mainstage), MIA: All Mine (Bocón Theatre), Spamalot (Woodside Community Theatre), and The Addams Family (Woodside High School). She is also a part of the Camino23 Collective here in San Diego, focusing on creating and supporting Latinx theatre. Lourdes is thrilled to be a part of this wonderful production with such a talented cast and crew. Also, a special thanks to her partner, friends, and family for the constant love and support!

JJ ECCLES (Assistant Director, Ensemble, Matt/Gibson u/s) (he/ him) is a fourth-year at San Diego State with a double major in Theatre Arts, Performance and Television, Film, and New Media, Production along with a Cultural Proficiency minor. He is predominantly an actor, but is excited to venture into directing as well. Recent credits include Scott (Jonathan/ Mr. Collins u/s) in Ziggy, Stardust, & Me (SDSU), Arnold in The Magic Hummingbird (CEART Tijuana) and Max (Ernst u/s) in Cabaret (SDSU). In addition to performing, he is also one of the Production Managers for Skull & Dagger Dramatic Society and the PR Coordinator for Film Society here at SDSU. HEATHER LARSEN is a third-year graduate student at San Diego State studying Scenic Design. She is excited to be designing her fourth production with SDSU, the others being A Raisin in the Sun, The 25th... Spelling Bee, and The Weight of Dreams. Additional credits include scenic design for The 39 Steps, Sabrina Fair, and Beau Jest at The Master’s University and production design for the 2021 feature film The Man From Nowhere. In conjunction with her design experience, she has worked professionally as a scenic carpenter with Scenic Highlights, a company with clients such as The Academy Awards and Disneyland. MAYTÉ MARTÍNEZ is a native-born San Diegan. She received a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Costume Design from San Diego State University. She is currently in her last semester at San Diego State University’s MFA program pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in Costume Design. Her costume design works vary from theater to contemporary dance, opera, and film. She is also working as a teaching artist with the arts engagement department at The Old Globe.

Kate is a fourth-year Theatre Arts, Performance major and an English/Interdisciplinary Studies minor. You may have seen her in previous productions here at SDSU, including Marmee in Skull and Dagger’s Little Women and as a performer in V-Day’s Raise the Vibration (2021-2023). Most recently, she wrote and directed her first full length play, Medea, with cowriter and director Stephanie Norris. She is also the current treasurer for Skull and Dagger. Kaia Podd is a first-year student double majoring in Theatre Arts, Performance and General Business. She is an Orange County and San Diego-based actress and musician. Past roles include Antigone (Antigone, Huntington Beach Academy of the Performing Arts) Matilda Blackwell (The Sweet Science of Bruising, Huntington Beach Academy of the Performing Arts) and Heather Macnamara (Heathers, Tophat8 Repertory). She works as a party princess and mascot employee for children’s birthday parties, and has volunteered at Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts junior summer arts camp. Jon Alexander Hewitt

(Gibson, Loving Husband & Sideshow Bob/Homer)

Jon Alexander Hewitt is making his SDSU debut in Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play. He earned his AA in Theatre Arts and is now in his senior year, pursuing his bachelors at SDSU. Having found his calling in acting during his fledgling years at Grossmont College, Jon’s passion for the craft has only deepened over time. He believes in the transformative power of theatre, embracing each new opportunity to explore the depths of human emotions and experiences. Some of his roles include Cinderella’s Prince (Into the Woods), Professor Moriarty (Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure), and Orcus/Ronnie (She Kills Monsters). He would like to thank his mom who has been his biggest fan and greatest supporter.

Abigail Maurer (Nedra/Edna Krabappel)

Abigail Maurer is a third-year Musical Theatre, Performance student based in Thousand Oaks, CA. Abigail has been in 24 shows throughout her 15 years of acting of acting experience, and has played roles such as The Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music (Westlake High School Theatre Company), Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins (Hillcrest Players), and Claire in The Long Christmas Ride Home (San Diego State University). Abigail is currently a Young Adult Ambassador for 5-Star Theatricals and has been with the company for eight years. This past summer, Abigail worked as an acting coach for Hillcrest Players’ musical theatre summer camp. Ava Manly is a first-year Theatre Arts, Performance major at SDSU. Her past roles include her portrayal of Vera in She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition, Maria in Twelfth Night, and Mona in Chicago: Teen Edition. She is beyond excited to perform in this show, as it is her first SDSU production. Frida Ramos-Casas (Colleen, First FBI Agent/Lisa)

Frida is a third-year student here at SDSU majoring in Theatre Arts, Performance and minoring in Dance, and this is her first performance in a main-stage production. She focuses her dance study on yoga and contact improvisation dance techniques. She speaks Spanish fluently and is currently learning Italian for her future study at Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici next spring at the Italian International Institute in Florence. Frida is from San Diego and had her base in theater at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, where she majored in musical theater. Elsie is a first-year Theatre Arts, Performance major from Monterey, CA. Recent credits include Ocean in Ride the Cyclone (Forest Theater Guild), and also several high school productions before attending SDSU.

Booker Schrock (Matt, Homer/Scratchy)

Booker Schrock (any pronouns) grew up in Eureka, California, performing across Humboldt County in high school and community productions. After moving to San Diego to study Theatre Arts, Performance till 2025 at SDSU, Booker has been lucky enough to be able to act with many SDSU associated theatre groups, including the Main Stage, Skull and Dagger, Turnkey Theatre, and most recently, Black Renaissance, as “Laurie” in Pipeline. Booker has also recently studied Shakespeare abroad over the summer at Prague Shakespeare Company, where they played “Touchstone’’ in Sharon Ott’s As You Like It. Booker has had an unforgettable experience in Mr. Burns, and hopes you’ll enjoy the show.

Isabel Wirz (Quincy, Businesswoman/Bart)

Isabel, a second year pursuing a BA in Theatre Arts, Performance, is so excited to be a part of her first mainstage production here at SDSU! She is from the Bay Area where she has been performing and collaborating with various theatre companies locally since the age of 9. Past shows include Musical Theatre Club’s Into the Woods (Cinderella), Skull and Dagger’s Little Women (Meg), The Pajama Game (Gladys), and Fiddler on the Roof (Shaindel).
