Through all the tests we have remained optimistic. We have continued to create and to produce, and your support has ensured that we flourish. It is in this highly appreciative spirit, that we offer you our production of Pippin. We remain optimistic that in our next season (21/22) we shall be seeing you again in-person, and in our theatre spaces. DIRECTORS NOTE Pippin holds a special place in my heart. I grew up watching the filmed version of the 1972 original Broadway production directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse and then I was fortunate enough to be in the 2005-06 Goodspeed Opera House revival and subsequent North American tour. Revisiting and reimagining the piece almost 15 years later has been a joy. When I first began this process, the main question I continued to ask myself is how does this piece resonate in 2021 given everything we have gone through over the past year. With that in mind, I thought about the thousands of out of work actors whose shows shut down in March of 2020 and still remain closed today. I envisioned a small company of actors, taking refuge in a theatre with everything that a theatre would have to offer including set pieces, costumes, props, rope, you name it. Having not performed in over a year, this troupe, led by their mysterious and charismatic leader, welcomes a stranger into their theatre and they are given the chance to perform their show again. It is through that lens that we approached this show and I am grateful to the entire creative team and cast for jumping on board as we found a unique way to tell this story. With so much previous knowledge of this show it is a challenge to disassociate yourself from what lives in you. This production pays homage to Bob Fosse as his stamp on this show and the writing of the show remains in this version of the script revised for the 2013 Broadway revival. Finally, producing a show of this size during the pandemic takes more than a village, and I am in awe of the dedication, care, and tenacity of everyone involved who made Pippin possible. Using strict COVID guidelines developed by the School of Theatre, Television, and Film, this show was rehearsed and performed safely, with all 8 actors being fully vaccinated at the time of filming. I am grateful to Tim Powell and his TFM students for volunteering their time to film our show and edit it. In the spirit of live theatre, we had one chance at this and what you see is a “live” performance of our show with only a few essential reshoots. I am hopeful that this small step of a fully realized musical will be the catalyst for the return of live theatre in our near future.
Stephen Brotebeck, Director Professor, MFA Musical Theatre Program
DIRECTOR STEPHEN BROTEBECK is a Professor in the MFA Musical Theatre program at
San Diego State University where he has directed and choreographed numerous productions including James and the Giant Peach, The Full Monty and The Drowsy Chaperone (Craig Noel Award Nomination). Mr. Brotebeck is currently the Artistic Director of the Okoboji Summer Theatre in Okoboji, IA, where he has directed and choreographed Mary Poppins, Murder On The Orient Express, and The Spitfire Grill among others. Broadway: Ghost, Peter and the Starcatcher (Movement Associate). As a director Mr. Brotebeck has helmed the Off and Off-Off Broadway productions of The Shark Play, Breaking The Shakespeare Code, St. Francis (NY Fringe – Excellence in Directing Award), The Maltese Walter, Greasemonkey and Scenes from a Balcony. Kennedy Center: Spring Gala (Director), My Fair Lady, Camelot, and Children Of Eden (Associate Director/ Choreographer). SOUND DESIGNER BRYCE SHINOHARA is making his TTF debut as the sound designer for
Pippin. Bryce is a senior studying for a B.M. in Global Composition, but also exploring elements of sound mixing and sound design.
SCENIC DESIGNER JENNI BALDWIN has been in theater for nearly two decades. After earning a
B.A. for Theater Design at the South Carolina School of the Arts, she worked for several years as a scenic artist with numerous theaters across the Southeast. Jenni also painted for The Old Globe Theater before the pandemic halted productions. She has continued to focus on theater during quarantine, working as a scenic designer. Jenni is currently working towards earning her MFA in Scenic Design and Technology for Theater, Television, and Film at San Diego State University.
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR CYNTHIA BLOODGOOD is Technical Direction MFA candidate at SDSU.
She is a technical director, scenic and lighting designer, theater educator, and arts advocate. A graduate from BYU with a degree in Technical Theatre and Design, she worked with youth theatre programs and schools, including San Diego Junior Theater, the School of Creative and Performing Arts, and Canyon Crest Academy, and as a carpenter and stage electrician with regional theaters, local production companies and IATSE 122. Technical direction credits include The Diary of Anne Frank, Las Madres, the Revolutionists, and the Blue Door at Moxie Theater, many years of shows at the San Diego Junior Theatre, and shows in the Grossmont Unified, San Diego Unified, and San Dieguito Unified School Districts. She loves the creative, collaborative aspect of theatre and appreciates the energy, talent, and drive her hard-working colleagues bring to this project.
ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER/ PRODUCTION ASSISTANT BRIANÁ BRANCH is a senior majoring in Economics
and Theatre Arts: Entertainment Management at San Diego State University. Brianá is a Math Tutor for SDSU’s Pre-College Institute. As a first time Assistant Stage Manager for a theatrical musical, Brianá is delighted for the experience. Enjoy the show!
LIGHTING DESIGNER COLBY FREEL is a lighting designer with experience working in many areas
of lighting design including plays, musicals, ballet, contemporary dance, and concerts. Colby received his Bachelor of Arts in Theatre: Design and Technical Theatre from the Department of Theater and Film at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Spring of 2019. He is currently a second-year MFA student studying Lighting Design at the School of Theatre, Television, and Film at San Diego State University. His most recent production credits include lighting design for Disney’s Newsies at Hering Auditorium, and lighting design for the virtual production of Much Ado About Nothing at San Diego State University.

DRAMATURG CHARLIE MEFFE is a recent graduate from The Theatre School at DePaul
University in Chicago with a BFA in theatre arts. Currently residing on the frigid east coast, she has been working in the vaccine field. (Somehow landed this job with only a year of pre-med classes in undergrad.) Needless to say, she is thrilled to be working on a show again after a year’s drought. Her other theatre work include Talking With...(Director, Chicago), Fun Home (AD, Vermont) and several others. Welcome back!
STAGE MANAGER RYN SCHROEDER is a senior studying Theatre Design and Technology at
SDSU, with a focus on stage management. However, her work in theatre also branches off into house management/box office, tour coordination, and sound design. Her other stage management credits here at State include The Pillowman (Spring 2018), Leonard Bernstein’s Mass (Fall 2018), The Vagina Monologues (Spring 2019), Spring Awakening (Spring 2019), Lying With Badgers (Fall 2019), Time Is On Our Side (Spring 2020), and Chess in Concert (Fall 2020). She is also sound designing SDSU’s production of She Kills Monsters (Spring 2021).
COSTUME DESIGNER WAVERLY STRICKLAND is currently in her second year of the MFA Design
and Technology program at SDSU. She received her B.A. in Costume Design and Technology from College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. While working on her B.A., Waverly worked as a costume shop assistant for the school, and was involved with the student run theatre group, Center Stage, designing shows. After graduating, Waverly worked at Playhouse on the Square in Memphis, TN, as the Associate Company Costume Designer/Technician for two years. Her past designs include Madagascar: The Musical Adventure, Junie B. Jones: The Musical, All Saints in the Old Colony, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Stage Door, and Waiting for Godot.
PRODUCTION ELECTRICIAN ALLY WOOD is a first year MFA student in Lighting Design here at SDSU.
She graduated from Georgia College & State University in 2018 with a BA in Theatre, specializing in both Lighting Design and Stage Management. Her most notable designs there were: A Streetcar Named Desire, Detroit 67, and Cabaret, all of which were nominated for the KCACTF award for Best Lighting Design. Upon graduating from Georgia College, Ally worked as the Lighting Design intern for the Naples Players in Naples, FL. There she had the opportunity to design both Junie B. Jones Jr.: The Musical and Disney’s Aladdin Jr. as well as being the Assistant Lighting Designer/Assistant Master Electrician for the summer mainstage show Chicago. Ally was the Assistant Lighting Designer for the SDSU production of Chess in Concert and the Lighting Designer for She Kills Monsters.

Musical Theatre MFA candidate at San Diego State University. Graduated from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and the Ailey/Fordham BFA in dance program. Danced for Ballet Hispanico, MOMIX, San Diego Opera, City Ballet of San Diego among others. Performed in national regional houses including Shakespeare Theatre Company, Arena Stage, La Jolla Playhouse, Theatre Under The Stars etc. Tours: The Addams Family, West Side Story. Appeared in FOX’s Pitch, Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and the Stephen Speilberg film West Side Story (2021). Founded the nonprofit Teatro San Diego, in response to the 2020 U.S. Civil Rights movement.
Casey Craig (Charles)
Casey is a director/choreographer/arts educator based out of Seattle, WA. He has worked with several arts organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest—most recently working with Village Theatre, Central Washington University, The Northwest Voice Conference, and the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Select direction and choreography credits include Bye Bye Birdie (Leavenworth Summer Theatre), The Little Mermaid (Bigfork Summer Playhouse), Chicago (Central Washington University) and Tarzan (Village Theatre Summer Stock). Select performance credits include West Side Story (Baby John, 5th Avenue Theatre - 50th anniversary production), Zanna Don’t! Melissa Glasgow
(Fastrada) Melissa is excited to be back in the theatre with the incredible cast and creative team of Pippin! She received her BFA in Musical Theatre at the University of California, Irvine, and since then has worked in Southern California and toured the country. Most recently, she had the opportunity to travel to Saudi Arabia as a part of a new festival titled Riyadh Seasons, celebrating different cultures from around the world. Favorite credits include: Peter Pan (Mrs. Darling), The Little Mermaid (Aquata), and A Chorus Line (Sheila). Thank you to Stephen, Rob, Ryn and the rest of this team for your intelligence, skill, and dedication to making this production happen. I’m grateful to share the stage and the Zoom room with all of you.

CAST: WHO’S WHO Sheldon Gomabon
(Lewis) Sheldon Gomabon is originally from Honolulu, Hawaii. He has a passion for developing stories that showcase authentic narratives from underrepresented communities, especially the voices of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island storytellers. His most recent work has been developing new musicals regionally and in New York City with companies like Musical Theatre Factory, New Light Theatre Project, The Tank NYC, and TheatreWorks USA. At SDSU, he was last seen in Chess and as associate director for MTC’s Spring Awakening. He holds a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from The University of Central Florida with concentrations in Theatre and Cultural Studies, and is a graduate of the American Musical Dramatic Academy.
Victoria Matlock Fowler
(Catherine) Victoria Matlock Fowler is best known for playing Elphaba in the iconic Wicked. She also starred on Broadway as Dyanne in Million Dollar Quartet, and reprised her role Off-Broadway and on the Las Vegas strip. She originated the role of Cindy Lou in the Off-Broadway production of The Marvelous Wonderettes, and can be heard on the cast album. Victoria has worked with Hal Prince, Jack O’Brien, Jerry Mitchell, and Frank Wildhorn, toured nationally and internationally, and once ran away with the circus. She’s been featured in numerous workshops of exciting new works, headlined in concerts to benefit charitable causes such as Sandy Hook Elementary and Hurricane Katrina, and belted out the national anthem in front of the Green Monster in Fenway Park. Currently, she can be seen on streaming platforms starring in several films, including the feature film Love Meet Hope, the horror short Crib, and the psychological thriller The Voices.
Kyle Montgomery
(Berthe) Regional Credits: DeafWest, Actors Co-Op, Uptown Players, Lyric Stage, Trinity Shakespeare Festival, WaterTower Theatre, Circle Theatre, Theatre Three, StageWest. Kyle played Hermey in the International Tour of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: the Musical for three years. Class of 2022, MFA in Musical Theatre at SDSU. CAST: WHO’S WHO Clinton Sherwood
(Pippin) Clinton Sherwood is a teacher and multidisciplinary artist who is currently based in San Diego. After receiving his BFA in Musical Theatre from Millikin University, he began performing across the country in regional theaters (select credits: Mary Poppins, Starlight Express, Hair, Cats, Hairspray) and in the national tours of Cats and West Side Story. After working on 90210, Clinton finally landed in NYC where he joined the Broadway company of The Book of Mormon and would soon be a traveling swing to cover all 3 companies of the show. While in NYC, he began to music direct productions at universities in the tri-state area. Recently, Clinton finished a 3-year position as an associate voice teacher for the Matt Farnsworth Vocal Studio, where he was teaching singers of all ages from young high schoolers to Broadway performers.
Christopher Shin
(Theo) Chris is a first year MFA Musical Theatre student at SDSU. He made his Broadway debut in Mary Poppins and most recently toured with Irving Berlin’s White Christmas (directed and choreographed by Tony nominee Randy Skinner). Recent regional theatre credits include: Anything Goes at Arena Stage (directed by Molly Smith), South Pacific at Maltz Jupiter Theatre (directed by Gordon Greenberg), Thoroughly Modern Millie at Goodspeed Opera House (directed by Tony nominee Denis Jones), The Wizard of Oz at Walnut Street Theatre (directed by Glenn Casale). He has also worked at North Shore Music Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse, Sacramento Music Circus, Kansas City Starlight, Arkansas Rep, and Westport Country Playhouse. Chris holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts (CAP21).
