S

outh Dakota State students are in for a sweet treat: Flyboy Donuts is now being delivered every Thursday to locations across campus including Java City, Union Coffee and both C-stores.

“I’m excited for Flyboy to be on campus,” said Austin Rhode, a freshman animal science major. “I’m looking forward to going and getting some now.”

The deliveries to campus include a variety of flavors such as raspberry, lemon and bavarian cream. Styles include donuts, bismarks and long johns, which Rhode said are his favorite type of pastry.

Flyboy owner Ben Duenwald, who has owned the company since 2014, said delivering his store’s popular donuts to South Dakota State only made sense because they already deliver over 100 dozen donuts to Brookings each week.

“We started selling to Bozied’s in February and it has been very successful,” Duenwald said.

Deliveries are also made to many other Brookings businesses including Daktronics, Brookings Health and some local banks.

The success isn’t unusual — Flyboy isn’t just a traditional donut store.

Founded by a fighter pilot and ultimately bought

by Duenwald, Flyboy Donuts has been highly successful in Sioux Falls. Its first location opened in 2014 and they recently expanded with a second Sioux Falls location which opened in May. The company prides itself on its grassroots, family-owned mentality.

“Larger stores can’t have so much dedication to quality. The biggest difference [with Flyboy] is freshness,” Duenwald said.

General Activity Fee workgroups were announced. They will be: Athletic Facilities and Operations, Transportation, Student Life, Wellness Services and Student Organization.

GAF is a fee charged per credit hour every semester for students. The fee provides funding for the Student Union and student health, athletics and programming.

The GAF has jumped by almost $16 in the last three years. Monson credits this to the Wellness Center expansion and changes in the enrollment.

“If there is a raise, it will stay minimal,” Monson said.

Brookings’ McDonald’s is celebrating a grand reopening of its restaurant from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 after three weeks of construction on its lobby area.

There will be plenty of opportunities to win prizes: • The first 50 dine-in customers at the restaurant will receive free Big Macs for a year.

Athletic Director Justin Sell talked to SA about the importance of athletics to the university.

“The decision [to move to Division I athletics] was made just as much for the university as it was for the athletic department,” he said.

The student attendance for the game against the Montana State Bobcats was over 3,300 students, according to Sell. The total attendance was 14,614 — well over the 11,994 average attendance the NCAA recorded in 2017.

Sell also announced the football team will be playing only 10 games this season, as SDSU was unable to come to an agreement with a team to play on its bye week of Sept. 22.

The next SA meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17 in the Lewis and Clark Room, in the Student Union.

Jacks soccer rebounds against Creighton In a two-game homestand this past week the South Dakota State women’s soccer team split matches with a 1-0 victory over the Northern Iowa Panthers and a 2-0 defeat to the Arizona State Sun Devils.

The Jacks were coming off of a week in which they defeated Green Bay 2-0 and fell to Creighton 1-0.

When the Sun Devils (3-2) visited Fishback Soccer Complex, they managed to dominate the Jacks and outshot the home team by two goals.

SDSU had just two shots on target throughout the match.

Goalkeeper Maggie Smither played the entire match and made five saves.

‘It brings us all together:’ Hobo Day theme 2018 The 2018 Hobo Day theme imprinted on the official button reads “together in the tradition,” a theme that Grand Pooba Miranda Mack believes is a good description of the events.

The 2018 button was designed by Thomas Bates, a graphic design major.

Hobo gear with the design is only being sold in the University Bookstore this year. The Hobo Shoppe was discontinued after adviser switches for the Hobo Day Committee.

Thursday, Sept. 13 marks one month from Hobo Day. Students can sign up for the One Month Club 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Union Market Stage.

Students help manager combat color blindness

ot everybody sees things the same, but for Ron Straub, color-vision glasses have helped him see the world and the world see him.

Straub, who is the information technology services manager at South Dakota State, has been colorblind his entire life.

His reaction upon receiving the glasses and finally seeing color was captured on video by his students. The footage garnered over 812,000 views on his personal YouTube page and was even published by Yahoo News and Metro, the highest circulating newspaper in the United Kingdom.

The rights to the video are currently owned by a media intelligence agency based in Dublin, Ireland called Storyful.

Last May some of Straub’s

students pooled money together to gift him a pair of EnChroma glasses.

EnChroma glasses help resolve some of the brain’s confusion which causes color blindness. “This looks like it’s glowing,� Straub said with excitement as he examined a piece of tissue paper after first putting on the glasses.

The colors instantly changed from “extremely dull� to “vibrant and bold,� he said.

Kaci Madsen, a sophomore nursing major and employee of Straub, first came up with the idea when she met him at the beginning of last year. “He came into the desk one day and had us pick out his tie,� Madsen said.

That’s when she asked Straub if he’d heard of EnChroma. Although he had, he was skeptical of the glasses’s effectiveness.

Madsen convinced Straub to take a test to evaluate the severity of his condition. When the results came back, she shared them with the other student employees and they all decided to get Straub the glasses.

Some of Straub’s friends and family combined efforts with the students as well. “I feel that sometimes we get so caught up with life that we take simple things, like the ability to see color, for granted,�

Madsen said. “Our senses are such a gift to us and I feel so humbled that my coworkers and I could help Ron gain the ability to experience this world in a whole new light.�

special connection with the students he works with and this gift shows it. “The entire experience was extremely moving,�

Familiar new hire chosen to lead College of Engineering LANDON DIERKS News Reporter The College of Engineering welcomed a familiar face as its newest dean after Lewis Brown retired this summer.

Bruce Berdanier, the man hired after a nationwide search to replace Brown, said he is excited to lead one of South Dakota State’s largest academic colleges and hopes to keep the College of Engineering moving in a positive direction.

Berdanier returned to SDSU in July after serving as the Dean of the School of Engineering at Fairfield University in Connecticut. Prior to his time at Fairfield, Berdanier spent five years at SDSU as the department head of civil and environmental engineering between 2008 and 2013.

Megan Fiala, a junior mechanical engineering major and president of the SDSU Joint Engineering Coun-

cil, believes the leadership change mixed with Berdanier’s prior experiences presents the College of Engineering with a unique opportunity to find avenues for growth. “[Berdanier] has been at SDSU before, so he understands the culture, why we do the things that we do and isn’t completely coming in from out of the blue,” Fiala said. “He is also bringing in new ideas from a different place which can help refresh the College of Engineering and shed light on things we may not have noticed before.”

Berdanier understands the success of his predecessor means expectations for his own success are great, but he is confident in his plan to keep the program moving in the right direction.

“Lew [Brown] was really experienced,” Berdanier said.

“He’d been here like 16 years as dean and typically deans are only around for five years

stuff.

or so. It’s really amazing he did it for that long. The big thing I want to do is support what I call the high impact activities, and I learned a lot about doing that from things I learned from [Brown].”

Berdanier’s duty to support the engineering students and faculty is elevated by the standard set by his predecessor.

During his 16 years as dean at SDSU, Brown saw the construction of two new buildings for use by the College of Engineering as enrollment within the college increased from 1,300 students in 2001 to 2,000 students in 2016, an indication of Brown’s success.

Berdanier’s plan puts an emphasis on “high impact activities including engineering student competition teams supported by the College of Engineering and research activities performed by students and faculty.

According to Berdanier, the effect of emphasizing these activities has two functions. Foremost, it serves to promote engagement for undergraduate students, but it is also meant to attract more students to the university.

The transition back to SDSU has not been too difficult for Berdanier. He credits the familiar faces he worked with during his first stint at SDSU for helping him readjust to life at SDSU.

Before becoming an educator in 1996, Berdanier owned his own civil engineering firm in Ohio and spent time as a consultant in wastewater treatment.

Berdanier’s education career includes stops at the South Dakota School of Mines, Ohio Northern, and Fairfield University.

“My wife and I are both excited to be here again,” Berdanier said.

FLYBOY Flyboy was already contracting with Aramark in Sioux Falls, the same company that operates food services on campus. All it took was a simple conversation with the Aramark office on campus to expand to the SDSU market.

“A Flyboy rep contacted us,” said Jamie Foerster, Aramark location manager

for the Larson and Hansen C-stores. “It was a nobrainer.”

Aramark reports receiving 12 dozen donuts each week.

The four participating campus locations split and each receive three dozen. Foerster said her locations sell out every Thursday.

As long as demand for

the donuts keep up, delivery plans won’t change.

Duenwald said in the future he looks to deliver Flyboy donuts more frequently.

“Hopefully almost every day of the week,” Duenwald said.

While Flyboy may be new to C-stores and coffee shops, it isn’t new to campus.

Last October Flyboy provided the SDSU Foundation with coffee and donuts over Hobo Day, a tradition Duenwald is continuing this year.

Future plans include adding Flyboy coffee K-cups to C-stores on campus.

Duenwald hopes Flyboy coffee will make it to the C-stores by next school year.

In addition to deliveries to stores in Brookings and on campus, Flyboy also delivers to other areas like Mitchell and Vermillion.

For a certain fee, Duenwald said anyone can place custom orders on the Flyboy website.

Pulliam-Sanchez and Braley were interviewed and asked questions prior to the date then again afterward —

someone new and hopefully start a connection.

G: I was looking for something interesting.

V: Someone I can click with emotionally.

G: Someone I can talk to and get to know well.

Would you go on another date with the person?

V: Yeah, I had a great time.

He seemed like a nice guy.

G: Yeah, I would. Nothing went bad so I can’t see why I wouldn’t go on another date.

The two went to Craft Italian American Fusion, Pulliam-Sanchez ordered Black and White Alfredo while Braley had Blackened Chicken Caprese while getting to know each other that night.

Both of them thought the food was great.

Pulliam-Sanchez said he would like to go on another date and Braley agrees.

“I enjoy meeting new people and would like to get to know her more.” Pulliam-Sanchez said.

“We both hit it off. We were able to find areas of interest where we both had overlapping interest.” Braley said.

Third annual Maker Festival promotes creativity, collaboration EMMA ANDERSON Lifestyles Reporter Woodworking, electronics, food, arts and crafts — these are just some of the items that the talented and creative people of the Brookings community will have on display at this year’s Maker Festival.

The third annual Maker Festival is being held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 in front of the Children’s Museum.

“The Brookings Maker Festival is a family-friendly event to celebrate making and makers in the Brookings community,” said Jennifer Quail, director of entrepreneur support with the Brook-

ings Economic Development Corporation.

The event was created to showcase talented “makers” in the form of a “show-andtell” setting. It also provides an opportunity for networking and collaboration, Quail said.

“We hope people will meet others from the community they might not have met otherwise and possibly partner on making a project and create something neither one anticipates,” she said.

The event caters to all likes and interests with everything from robots to wooden canoes and cupcakes.

In past years there has even been pottery, yarn

spinning and 3D printing.

This year there will be food trucks and live music along with individuals showcasing their work.

One of the demonstrators, Cody Butler, will be presenting a prototype called the “Pongle.” This is an electronic attachment for a PingPong racket which pairs with a smartphone and helps people connect with other players and keep score.

“I love to play Ping-Pong but never get to because I don’t have access to a PingPong table and I also don’t have anybody to play against,” Butler said.

this will be his first time participating and he is “anxious to get as much feedback as possible.”

While there are many new participants this year, there are also returning ones, like Kent Miller.

“I am bringing the All Terrain Track Chair which is a tracked vehicle to provide mobility for a guy in a wheelchair who is paralyzed from the armpits down,” Miller said.

The chair has a ramp that raises and lowers and is controlled with a radio control unit that is attached to the wheelchair.

By participating for the second time in the festi-

val, Miller hopes to see other makers in the community support the event and demonstrate creative skills that might help others.

This event has the potential to help individuals, whether it be at Ping-Pong or with a disability, but it also benefits the community as a whole.

“This event is a positive influence for kids on what is possible that doesn’t involve being in front of a screen and it generates more creativity,” Miller said.

Issue: People are protesting others’ rights to peacefully protest.

“W

hat was Nike thinking” President Trump tweeted on September 7 after Nike debuted their controversial Colin Kaepernick ad. Nike didn’t have to respond to the President’s rhetorical question, because the numbers did on its behalf.

According to marketwatch.com, Nike’s online sales have jumped 31% in the last week, significantly higher than the 17% jump recorded during the same week in 2017.

So, what does that mean for all of the angry patriots taking to social media with their Nike apparel and a lighter? Frankly, it means nothing for the company.

Nike still has their money. Nike is still making money. But, please, protest peacefully as you will.

Isn’t that what this is all about, peaceful protest?

“Believe in something,” the ad reads.

“Even if it means sacrificing everything.”

Protestors might not be willing to sacrifice everything, but they don’t hesitate to sacrifice their socks and shoes.

Speaking of shoes, does anyone who is currently burning theirs consider the

possibility of donating them?

According to a video on Kaepernick’s girlfriend’s Instagram, that’s exactly what he did in the 2017 offseason. The footage shows him delivering vans full of his own infamous sneaker collection to an organization in San Francisco, California that provides shoes and clothing to the homeless.

But a massive amount of people have chosen to ignore this. Choosing instead to boycott an entire brand and burn their apparel in front of a camera.

Much like the Starbucks boycott of 2017 — following the company’s pledge to hire more refugees — Twitter mentions of a Nike boycott have spiked following the ad.

But, like the Starbucks boycott, analysts predict that no matter how much people talk about it, ideas of a boycott will probably not end up having a significant impact on the company.

They flex their freedom of peaceful protest muscles, but they’re protesting others’ rights to peacefully protest.

We, at The Collegian, feel that anyone, regardless of their cause, should be able to peacefully protest however they choose.

We cannot condemn one group of people for exercising their rights, but not another.

Kaepernick started a revolution and used his platform. He’s done so much to raise awareness for injustices in the system and police brutality against African Americans.

Nike took a risk by putting Kaepernick at the forefront of their newest ad, and it has paid off.

Nike Twitter mentions are up, despite some of them having negative connotation.

People who are protesting are burning a product they’ve already paid for, so relatively no harm has come to Nike.

So, Mr. President, chances are Nike was thinking with a relatively clear and levelheaded intention. The company backed a man who lost his career. A man who stood for something, which meant kneeling for another.

I can’t tell you how many times, when I’ve asked someone to draw or sing something, that I’ve received the response, “I can’t.” There seems to be this concept we’ve all bought into that only a select few people are born with artistic talent.

Talent is a very real concept. Some people have

the innate ability to be artistic, lead groups or complete complex mathematical equations.

However, everyone deserves to express themselves artistically. There are endless ways to do so: drawing, music, acting, architecture, makeup, writing or any number of the various art forms that exist.

Perhaps your art teacher in high school convinced you that your art was worthless?

Believe me, they were wrong.

Maybe your singing voice is

monotone, and more than enough people have told you so? I’ll admit, that’s a little more difficult to fix. But trust me, with very hard work, you’ll start to hear tones more easily.

I’m not saying everyone doesn’t have strengths and weaknesses. After all, some of us are capable of understanding and applying physics and math to their careers. Others can write essays several pages long because words come easily to them. It takes all kinds of people to make the world

Pledge to stay away from single-use plastics JENNIFER MCLAUGHLIN Columnist

According to National Geographic and the National Park Service, the average American uses 346 plastic bottles, 365 plastic bags and 584 plastic straws every year.

If you multiply that by each student, faculty and staff member on campus, that gives you around 5,053,676 plastic bottles, 5,331,190 plastic bags and 8,529,904 plastic straws used just at SDSU. Plastics surround us every day. As I write this, I am typing on a plastic keyboard, have a plastic pen next to me and a plastic-cased cellphone in my pocket. Not to mention my plastic watch

and plastic sunglasses. I even have plastic in my eyes for my contact lenses.

There is no denying plastics have enhanced our lives.

Single-use plastics are particularly problematic considering they are only used once and often for only a few minutes.

In National Geographic’s June 2018 magazine and the United Nations’ “Environment SingleUse Plastics: A Road to Sustainability” report, there were enlightening and frightening facts shared regarding plastics.

One beach in Hawaii has more microplastics than sand and many animals ingest the microplastics. Research is being conducted on if these plastic toxins are harmful to humans who eat animals who have ingested plastic.

All these facts can be frightening, but as the species that created the plastic problem, we can also fix it. Two of the simplest ways to ditch single use plastic is to use a reusable grocery bag and reusable water bottle.

Because of its abundance and its longevity, in-tact plastic products affect our natural environment in a variety of ways including blocking waterways. In some countries, plastics create stagnant pools of water that are ideal for disease bearing bugs to breed in.

Wildlife is also severely impacted by plastics. Some become so entangled in it that they perish. Other wildlife eat the plastic mistaking it as real food. These animals then feel “full” but have not received the nutrients they need.

Christion looks to cement legacy JOHN BEGEMAN Sports Reporter

T

aryn Christion is coming off of one of his biggest games of his career — during which he threw six interceptions and fumbled three times in a 51-16 loss against James Madison in the Football Championship Subdivision semifinal.

If someone has been able to handle the highest of highs and lowest of lows – it’s Christion.

“He’s mature enough not to have a chip on his shoulder from the James Madison game,” head coach John

Stiegelmeier said. “I think he’s used that in the most positive way anybody could use it.”

In his first appearance since the JMU debacle, Christion torched the Montana State defense for 391 yards, four touchdowns and managed to take care of the ball — allowing zero turnovers. In that game, Christion became just the second player in Missouri Valley Football Conference history to surpass 10,000 yards of total offense.

In 2017, Christion experienced some career highs when he set a South Dakota State single-season record

with 35 passing touchdowns.

Christion owns a 23-8 record as the fourth year starting quarterback and owns seven different single-season records.

Christion holds the passing yards record of 3,714 in 2016 and passing touchdowns when he threw 35 in 2017. The 6-foot-2-inch, senior also has SDSU career records for touchdown passes (72) and total offense (9,697 yards).

The James Madison game wasn’t the only road bump that Christion experienced in his football career.

Following his stand-out

junior season at Roosevelt High School, when he had 3,537 total yards, Christion committed to play football at SDSU. In 2015, during the third game of his senior year at Roosevelt, Christion suffered a season-ending injury.

“Getting injured was tough, it was a humbling experience — you never think that’s going to happen to you,” he said. “I couldn’t walk — some people can never walk. I learned to be grateful for what I had and the opportunity to play the game.

It forced me to realize how much of an impact a person

can have even if they aren’t on the field.”

That year, Christion went on to play basketball and run track his senior year.

Christion anchored the state-champion 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams at the 2015 South Dakota Track and Field Meet.

Coming into his first collegiate year, Christion knew if he worked hard he could win the second spot on the depth chart behind junior starting quarterback Zach Lujan — and that’s exactly what he did.

SDSU football looks for 2-0 start in Beef Bowl

Fresh off of a dominant season-opener with a 45-14 home victory over the Montana State Bobcats, the South Dakota State football team now sets its focus on a matchup against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions (UAPB).

According to VegasInsider, the third-ranked Jackrabbits are 53.5-point favorites over a UAPB team that split its first two games against non-Division I opponents.

UAPB (1-1) drubbed NAIA foe Cumberland University 55-0 this past Saturday. Cumberland plays in the same division as Dakota State

and Dakota Wesleyan. UAPB fell in the team’s season opener to Division II opponent Morehouse College 34-30.

On paper, SDSU holds a great advantage over its opponent, but head coach John Stiegelmeier said the UAPB team coming to Brookings on Saturday is fast and athletic.

Stiegelmeier, who is now in his 22nd year at the helm for the Jacks, isn’t worried about his team overlooking Saturday’s opposition.

“Every week, regardless of the opponent, the battle is inside you to improve,” Stiegelmeier said. “In reality, Arkansas-Pine Bluff this week is no different than James Madison [which crushed SDSU 51-16 in last

year’s FCS semifinal game.]

You’re playing for something different, but the goal is to play better than you did last week so that’s how we are approaching [the game.] Regardless of who you play and what their record is, we need to be ready to play.”

The Golden Lions have struggled in recent seasons, owning an 11-44 record over the past five full years. Cedric Thomas was hired as head coach of UAPB, his alma mater, this offseason in hopes of turning the football program around.

While UAPB was only able to split the first two contests of the season, the team was without running back KeShawn Williams. The se-

nior led the team with over 1,000 total yards from scrimmage last season but has yet to see the field in the 2018 due to injury. In his absence, the Golden Lions have relied heavily on their passing attack to move the football.

Junior quarterback Shannon Patrick is in his first year as a starter for the Golden Lions and has already established an on-field connection with junior wide receiver Josh Wilkes. Through two games, Patrick and the 6-foot-3-inch tall Wilkes have connected 14 times for 420 yards and four touchdowns.

CHRISTION “Getting recruited, Coach [Eric] Eidsness told me I might have a chance to play here my freshman year, but it wasn’t just handed to me,” Christion said. “It took a lot of work studying film, reading the playbook and putting in reps. I won the second job and then Lujan unfortunately went down, but you’ve got to be ready when your chance is given no matter how that happens.”

Entering his sophomore year, Christion won the starting spot in fall camp over senior quarterback Lujan.

“Even though I beat him out, I still learned so much from him on the sideline, and I like to take credit for his coaching career because he says he developed a knack for coaching that year,” Christion said with a laugh.

That year, Christion went on to put together one of the most impressive seasons a Jackrabbit quarterback has ever had.

As a sophomore, he set or tied 11 single-game or single-season school records on his way to becoming the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year and achieving third-team All-American honors.

In 2017, he threw for 35 passing touchdowns and 3,515 passing yards and he was named MVFC Offensive Player of the Week twice while also a finalist for both the 2016 and 2017 STATS FCS Walter Payton Award.

“He’s grown and we’ve had a lot of success with him and because of him,” Stiegelmeier said.

As his senior season progresses Christion and the team have one singular goal and that’s to be in Frisco, Texas come January for the FCS National Championship.

Volleyball breaks losing streak during Drake Invitational JOHN BEGEMAN Sports Reporter For the first time since Sept.

16, 2017, the South Dakota State volleyball team won a match.

The Jackrabbits (2-8) found success this past weekend beating UMass Lowell to open the Drake Invitational in four sets and Eastern Illinois in five highly competitive sets. The team lost two games in three sets to both the Drake Bulldogs and Iowa Hawkeyes.

“We started slow against UMass Lowell,” head coach Nicole Cirillo said. “It wasn’t given easy, we had to fight

through and then we excelled to win our first match.”

The team, after winning their first match, then went on to play an undefeated Drake squad competitively. Even though they lost in three sets, they were narrowly defeated – losing by five and then two points twice.

“Drake was a blast, I know we lost in three, but the scores were close and looking at it statistically you don’t lose many matches hitting like we did.” Cirillo said. “At the end of the day it was a phenomenal loss.”

The Jacks didn’t let the loss slow their momentum as Saturday morning they faced

off against Eastern Illinois University. The match was competitive the entire way through as the teams traded wins until the Jacks took the fifth and final set 15-8 to cap off a hard-fought victory.

“Saturday we had to work a little harder for it,” Cirillo said. “To go down two sets to one and come back and win in five was huge for us and another great sign showing we are learning how to fight and finish sets.”

Senior middle blocker Payton Richardson was a key contributor in the EIU win.
