SA indefinitely postpones possible CA contract resolution J. MICHAEL BERTSCH Managing Editor (He/Him) The Students’ Association Senate voted to postpone Resolution 20-17-R, a resolution focused on altering the Community Assistant contract, indefinitely. This vote effectively killed the motion without taking an official vote on the matter.

Resolution 20-17-R, “South Dakota State University Students’ Association Senate Requests Better Working Conditions For Our Community Assistants,” focused on a line in the CA contract which states CAs must “complete other duties as assigned keeping in mind that this is a position of service and thus may require more

than can be accurately described within this agreement.”

T h e re s o l u t i o n’s author and prime sponsor, Chief of Staff Rachel Schöön, says that CAs from SDSU came to her about their increased duties.

“Our constituents, or people we represent, are being put in really difficult working conditions,” Schöön said. “I do believe we need to bring it up and see what we can do to alleviate that.”

The CAs reference added shifts in mailrooms and custodial duties as motivation for the bill.

E m i l y To m s , a Senator-at-Large and current CA for Honors and Schultz Halls, made the motion to postpone the

resolution indefinitely, saying the resolution was not brought to the attention of Housing and Residential Life before being sent to the Senate floor.

“I think that there are some procedural issues that came about in how this resolution was presented,” Toms said.

“Housing and Residential Life has put procedures in place and has been speaking with CAs consistently since early October, when some concerns were originally brought up, and those conversations have produced results.”

This was echoed by other senators who voted in favor of postponing the resolution indefinitely, including Finance Chair Sarah Cook and Vice

President Reis Bruley.

However, Schöön said that members of Residential Life helped her draft the resolution. “(Claims that Residential Life was not contacted) are only true if you do not consider CAs a part of Housing and Residential life,” Schöön said. “CAs wrote most of this resolution and were definitely contacted about it.”

Those opposed to postponing the resolution believed that the resolution was worth debating.

“I don’t get why we’re scared to have this debate,” Sen. Andrew Rasmussen said. “Why can’t we just vote up or down on it. A lot of CAs around campus are feeling that by postponing

indefinitely, you’re not allowing us as Senators to actually address those concerns … If you don’t like what the bill says, you can vote no on it.”

Bruley opposed that argument, saying he does not believe a precedent should be set for the Students’ Association to discuss contracts.

The Senate voted 16 to eight in favor of postponing the resolution indefinitely; however, supporters of this resolution believe that it served its purpose.

“This (extra CA responsibilities) was a huge problem in the fall semester,” Schöön said.

“I was expecting it to be fixed by now and it wasn’t completely, there were improvements, but it

wasn’t fixed. My expectation from this was to bring about a conversation that really needed to happen, and I’m happy that we succeeded in that.”

Schöön encourages students to come to her, or other senators, if they are facing issues on campus.

“If any of my constituents want to bring something again, I’ll be more than happy to do that for them,” Schöön said. “I would also like to reach out to [Housing and Residential Life] and Student Affairs and ask that they make the improvements, even though this didn’t pass.”

HB 1076 alive despite deferral JORDAN RUSCHE Lifestyles Editor (She/Her)

House Bill 1076, which would require a birth certificate to reflect a person’s biological sex, has been revived by the House of Representatives after being narrowly defeated in committee Tuesday morning.

Introduced by Rep. Fre d D e u t s c h , t h e bill seeks to unify circuit courts on rulings regarding changes to sex designation, as some courts have allowed requests for changes and other have denied them.

It also states that allowing someone to change their vital records “in accordance with their subjective identification or feelings about their sex” would negatively impact the government’s ability to keep accurate records based on sex.

“Having a clear, biology-based definition of sex is also important to South Dakota because we are responsible to maintain public trust by providing reliable definitions and records, upon which, citizens and the judiciary may rely,” Deutsch said.

Deutsch cited several situations in which records of someone’s biological sex may be used, including identifying

differences in life expectancy, identifying disease and treatment responses, evaluating socio-economic inequalities, identifying criminals and preventing identity theft and fraud based on sex.

The revival comes after a “smoke-out,” or invocation of Joint Rule 7-7, in which a lawmaker, after having their bill defeated in committee, can request that committee send the bill to the floor for further action with support of one-third of the members elect.

According to the rule, the bill must be delivered to the full chamber by the next legislative day.

“Accurate birth certificates are essential,” Heather Smith, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota, said in a press release.

“If this bill becomes law, South Dakota would be depriving transgender people who were born in South Dakota a birth certificate that accurately reflects who they are.”

HB 1076 was deferred to the 41st legislative day, effectively killing the bill, in a 7-6 vote during its hearing with the Health and Human Services committee. However, at least two-dozen house members stood to revive the bill Tuesday afternoon.

The Health and Human Services Committee voted to deliver the bill to the floor without recommendation.

Deutsch said that no South Dakota judges had expressed to him the lack of laws regarding birth certificate changes was a problem, according to an article published by the Argus Leader.

Additionally, legislative findings presented in his draft of the bill, which are the rationale behind his call to action, were not found by the Legislative Research Council, but instead by an “independent” group of scientists, according to Deutsch.

The ACLU of South Dakota cited reasons as to why this bill would be harmful to trans people in South Dakota. In a 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, almost one-third of transgender people whose name or gender on vital records did not match their perceived gender reported they were harassed, denied benefits or services, discriminated against or assaulted.

The Office of Vital Records of the South Dakota Department of Health, a governmental body, has also stated in court cases regarding birth certificate amendments that “the Department of Health understands that

the term ‘incorrect data’ can mean any item on a record which is incorrect, including sex,” as cited in Deutsch’s bill.

Last year, Deutsch also introduced HB 1057, an unsuccessful bill criminalizing medical professionals for prescribing certain medical treatments to trans youth younger than 16.

According to Janna Farley, communications director of the ACLU of South Dakota, there have been at least four major bills before HB 1076 that targeted transgender people. These include the “bathroom bill” in 2016, a bill to prohibit gender identity discussion in schools in 2018, a bill prohibiting high school students from playing sports that align with their gender identity in 2019, and HB 1057 in 2020.

“It’s disturbing that legislators are spending so much time attacking vulnerable transgender youth and the LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit community as a whole,” Farley said.

Though the number of transgender people living in South Dakota could not be found, there are nearly 200,000 LGBTQ+ people living in the state, according to the Movement Advancement Project.

Space Force lands on campus as part of ROTC program ANDREW RASMUSSEN Opinion Editor (He/Him) Launched in 2019, the United States Space Force (USSF) has come to campus as part of the South Dakota State University Air Force ROTC program.

T h e U S S F wa s established within the Department of the Air Force, according to the Space Force website, and is overseen by the Secretary of the Air Force.

According to the USSF mission statement, “the USSF is a military service that organizes, trains and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests

in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force” The organization of the Space Force as an arm of the Air Force finds no exemption at SDSU. “Just like in the Navy, the Marines and Coast Guard are under the Navy, Space Force is under the Air Force,” Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies and Recruiting Officer Bethany Gross said. “We can have people come into the Space Force or Air Force and they are going to learn virtually that same thing, and they will just split when they graduate to whatever their components are.”

Within the Air Force ROTC program, an

increased emphasis on space is starting to be implemented.

“We are adding more space content … we spent a little bit of time on space, but I think you are going to see a lot more in our curriculum on content that is space driven,” Gross said.

In addition to space content, cyber security is also becoming a key factor in the Air and Space Force ROTC. Gross said informational based labs and exercises are being tailored to meet the increased emphasis on cyber and space.

C a re e r o u t l o o k s within the Space Force include satellite operators, cyber operations,

communications, engineering, intelligence and contracts and accusations, Gross said.

The SDSU Air Force ROTC program averages 50-55 students a year and graduates between 5-10.

Overall, the Air Force ROTC program focuses on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, in addition to more military based skill sets, by utilizing hands-on lab experiences. “ W h e t h e r i t ’s a war scenario or just an everyday life scenario, we are going to put everyone in that group in a position to solve that problem,” Gross said.

Interest from prospec-

tive high school students and current college students into the ROTC program has been bolstered by the introduction of the Space Force.

“I think it is generating a lot of interest and excitement,” Gross said.

“There are people absolutely asking about it …

Everyone I talk to, from high schoolers to folks in college, [Space Force] always gets brought up.”

Gross says the marketing of the new department takes credit for part of the interest and hype around the Space Force.

“With the formation of the Space Force, when it comes to the symbols and the verbiage, there is a lot of heritage to ‘Star

Trek,’” Gross said. “That gets people excited.”

For students looking to get involved in the Air and Space Force ROTC program, enrolling in courses AIR 101, 102, 201 or 202, which are free, is a good introduction to the program, Gross said.

“Neither taking the class or joining the program require students to join the military or serve after graduation, but they are a great way to grow your leadership, team-building and problem-solving skills,” Gross said.

Seten was inspired to apply for the Rhodes Scholarship by a fellow SDSU student, Connor Haaland, a Rhodes Scholarship finalist in the previous year.

“If you had a conversation with her, she would probably make it about you,” she said. “It is just mind blowing as you get to know her deeper … just how many layers there are and just how many accomplishments there have been.”

“A few years ago, we both were presenting research at an academic conference in Mankato, Minnesota,” she said.

“We drove out to Mankato together, and as we were driving, he was like, ‘Hattie, you really have to apply for the Rhodes,’ and I was like, ‘oh … I don’t know if I should.’ And he was like ‘yeah, you just have to apply,’ … no one else had told me that … I decided to apply because of that conversation.”

Seten grew up in Sioux Falls. Attending Lincoln High School, she took numerous AP courses, participated on the cross country, track and synchronized swimming teams and was the state president for South Dakota DECA, a program that encourages the growth of leadership and business competence for students. Seten was also a member of the speech and debate team.

“That really got me interested in a lot of current events and world issues,” she said.

This interest led Seten to be awarded the National

Security Initiative for Youth Scholarship (NSLIY), a merit-based scholarship that allowed her to spend a year in Morocco learning Arabic following high school graduation.

Following her year abroad, Seten began school at SDSU. While completing her undergraduate, Seten describes her biggest involvement on campus as serving as the Students’ Association president, in which she has the opportunity to work with student government, administrators and the state and local government.

Seten also works as the youngest member on the South Dakota World Affairs Council, which delivers programming to South Dakota that centers around current events and world affairs.

“Bringing that to this area that is pretty rural and disconnected often from large global events … is a lot of fun,” she said.

As a Spanish speaker, Seten also works as an English teacher for newcomers from countries like Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala in Flandreau, South Dakota.

Knutson said that Seten’s accomplishments, both nationally and here at SDSU, have certainly made her a role model for other students.

“She has such a big heart and a great mind. She is constantly employing both for the betterment of the world,” Knutson said. “You see the service she does for the campus community, and that extends beyond

to the Brookings and surrounding communities ... all in the name of diplomacy.”

With diplomacy being a theme in Seten’s life, she hopes to enter into a twoyear Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) program at Oxford studying politics and comparative government. With a passion for international affairs, she hopes to work for the state department in the future.

Seten shared her thankfulness for the people who helped her along her way, as well

as the resources available to her at SDSU. She credits several people for her success in her academic journey, including Molly Enz, a professor in the schools of American and global studies and women, gender and sexuality studies. “[Enz] has provided me with the most support, and encouraged me to apply for different programs that set me up to have the experience that I needed for the Rhodes,” Seten said. “She supported me in a lot of my

research, and then she pushed me in my classes … and served as a really strong advisor to me.

When I leave SDSU, I’ll be really thankful for her.”

To all students, Seten has one piece of advice.

“Apply, apply, apply for everything,” she said.

“You don’t want to let yourself be the biggest obstacle to your own success … If you are interested in some sort of program, take the time and do the application, because it might work out.”

A new lane to spend your spare time GRIFFIN TONSAGER Copy Editor (He/Him) Ope n s ince 1962 , Brookings’ bowling alley has a new name, a new management and a whole new look.

The Lanes, formally known as Prairie Lanes, is home to 26 new lanes and pinsetters installed over a period of eight weeks during renovations that began last summer. The Lanes is also home to a new bar and restaurant called Strikers.

South Dakota State Un ive rs i ty s t u d e nt s think The Lanes looks a lot better since it was remodeled.

“It was kind of dingy, like if you think of an old bowling alley,” Kaylee Leppke, a sophomore early childhood education major said. “But I like the new renovations. It’s very modern and very clean, I like clean. It’s really nice now.” Leppke added that the bowling alley is a place in Brookings that she plans on spending more time in.

After the remodel, ten out of the 26 lanes incorporate a technology allowing players to bowl in augmented reality using various projectors and sensors positioned above the lane itself.

The Lanes is one out of only ten bowling alleys in the United States with this new technology installed, provided by Brunswick Spark®.

thinks, will be a big community draw to The Lanes.

“We’re really excited about having that technology here,” Brallier said. “People can come in here and try something that they’ve never experienced.”

Renovations on what is now The Lanes started in May 2020 when Prairie Lanes was bought by M.G. Oil. “May 2 they started tearing everything out of here,” Greg Witte, assistant manager, said.

The Lanes hours: MondaySunday 11 a.m.-2 a.m.

By July, there was nothing in the entire building except the concrete floors and brick walls. The renova tions officially ended in November.

The Lanes officially opened under its new name and new owner Dec. 9, 2020, and nearly everything in the building was new.

“There’s nothing left in here except a freezer, a refrigerator and some lockers,” Brallier said, adding that it was very exciting and rewarding to be a part of the renovation and design process.

The new management is excited to be a place in

Brookings for all the local college students and families to spend time in.

“It’s been good, especially since there’s not a lot of things to do in Brookings for the younger generations,” Witte said.

Community interaction is one thing that is important to the bowling alley; in fact, the name for their bar and restaurant, Strikers, came from the collective votes of their Facebook followers.

Management hopes that this community outreach will continue and are interested in the possibility of hosting a college bowling league made up of SDSU students in the near future.

New management is pleasantly surprised by all the attention that The Lanes has received and is grateful for their success in this unique circumstance.

“It has been very rewarding to see the i n c re d i b l e re s p o n s e from Brookings and surrounding communities, along with being able to experience all of the energy and excitement from our customers, especially those who may have never bowled before,” Brallier said.

SDSU students and the Brookings community in general are excited about the new bowling alley in their community, as well.

“I love the layout, and I love how there are just so many people in here.

It just has great vibes,” Jake Ayers, a sophomore graphic design major said.

“I’ll absolutely be back.”

Tyler Bush ranks high at national livestock judging contest ADRIENNE LIPINSKI Reporter Tyler Bush has been competing in the world of livestock judging with a goal of winning the high individual title since he was 8 years old, and in November, that goal became reality.

Bush, along with members of the South Dakota State University’s livestock judging team, competed at the National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest held by the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. His dream became real when he was awarded the honor of high individual overall and high individual in reasons. The team placed third overall in the contest.

Originally, Bush was not awarded the title of high individual. During a banquet held to announce the winners at the end of the contest. Bush was announced 4th overall.

The team’s coach Brady Jensen asked him about his scores after.

After examining the results packet, Bush felt that there was a mistake, as the paperwork did not mirror how he thought he did. Not wanting things to be shrugged off, Jensen asked for the results to be checked again.

battle for me to make sure that every stone was flipped and knowing he put himself on the line meant a lot,” Bush, the animal science major from Britton, South Dakota, said.

It was a difficult, yet exciting, three and half hours waiting for them to recalibrate the scores.

At the end of the day, it was discovered that Bush had won high individual. Though he was “bummed” that he didn’t get his name called in front of the audience with people watching, he was happy it all got fixed.

“But the team being third, I don’t think anything would probably beat that,” Bush said.

The contest started out with a tough class, so he worked to get his nerves out by focusing on ending the day on a high note. Bush felt confident his oral reasons for placing the class went well.

On the collegiate level, participants judge groups of cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. They examine the animals and determine a ranking on what animals are the best based on the animal’s appearance. For example, they look for the quality and structure of animals.

Judging has impacted Bush’s life in many ways by teaching him organi-

zation, detail, big picture ideas and to appreciate what is good in life. It taught him to approach situations for what they are and to not get sidetracked. After college, Bush plans to go back to his family’s farm; livestock judging will help him check for the quality of his livestock.

“I tried to make it like every other day by going out there to judge and trusting my instincts, knowing that my coach had us prepared and ready to go for it,” Bush said.

“It’s a team sport,” Jensen said. Members practice roughly 20 to 30 hours a week, day or night, weekday or weekend.

The team will travel to area farms and ranches to practice judging and giving oral reasons.

Their season starts in January and goes until November, competing in multiple contests with the North American International Livestock Exposition contest concluding their season.

Te a m members include Bush, Simon Liggett, Matthew Chaney, Tommy Norman, Brooke Skoglund, Lexi Wetzel and Brittany Morgan.

Chaney was a high individual in sheep and goats and placed 14th overall.

“This goal could not have been achievable without my team here at SDSU and without their hard work, discipline and dedication to this dream,” Chaney said. “Otherwise it could not have been made a reality.”

The team has become

a second family to Bush because of their time spent together and bond over their passion for judging.

As a senior, Bush finished his collegiate career on a high note and is looking toward the future.

He plans to help Jensen coach the new team in the coming months to help them prepare for their seasons.

January marks the beginning of a new season, and Bush has already gotten his coaching feet

Performing Arts Center set to thrive despite challenges SYMMONE GAUER Reporter (She/Her)

Many schools around the country are unable to conduct inperson rehearsals and performances, but this is not the case for South Dakota State University.

“We’re very fortunate,” David Reynolds, director of the School of Performing Arts said.

Since the start of the fall semester, the school has been innovative in the ways it’s been able to conduct things.

Joanna Engles, a music education major, is preparing for her junior vocal recital Feb. 4, but says it’s been strange having to rehearse under COVID-19 guidelines.

“I guess you have to pick your battles,” Engles said. “But at least we’re performing … It’s easy to take for granted.”

Precautions include having students wear masks, social distancing, taping off seats and plexiglass barriers—much like everywhere else on campus.

Some additional restrictions for the center include limited audience sizes, no post-performance receptions or meet-and-greets in the lobby and shorter or broken-up rehearsals.

The center’s new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system filters the air every 30 minutes, so rehearsals are restricted to a half hour in each room before the room must be vacant for another half hour for circulation.

One concert band, for example, might start its 90-minute rehearsal in the band room before moving on stage in the Larson Concert Hall, then back to the band room. Some ensembles are broken into smaller groups, like the concert band.

“In some ways that’s been a challenge, and in other ways that’s been a good thing … but those challenges are minimal compared to the alternative, which is not getting to play at all,” Kevin Kessler, director for the concert and pep bands, said.

The pep band will have the opportunity to perform at the home basketball games this season, but the group is composed of only 20 students instead of the usual 36.

Crawford will perform his junior recital for both trumpet and voice March 19.

Innovation Indoors: Several events in the fall semester took place outdoors, but with colder weather preventing that as of now, finding ways to get more people involved while still being able to spread out on stage has been a challenge.

The upcoming theater production, for example, will be double cast, meaning along with fewer roles, there is a “cast within a cast,” with more than one actor assigned to each role who will perform on different days.

The show is called “God of Carnage” and will run Feb. 25-28.

Dancers share a similar experience as the department prepares for the spring dance concert March 19-21.

“I feel like with the six feet apart, we’ve been creative with the ways we can make art,” Brooklyn

Pendley, a senior elementary education major with a double minor in theater and dance, said.

Her dance partner, senior theater major Olivia Davis, agreed.

“And it’s created new opportunities … that we otherwise wouldn’t have explored,” Davis said.

They practiced together in the 2,500 square foot dance studio with only their accompanist and instructor around.

Looking toward the future: “I think the hardest thing is that people want to congregate … [and] it doesn’t feel normal,” Director of the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center Lynn Von Eschen said. “It’s just not human nature to ignore each other.”

Von Eschen started his position at the school in June and is responsible for the operations of the center, which includes overseeing events and ensuring safety.

Looking toward the future, Von Eschen wants to be ready and continue welcoming people and events back to the center, which is happening slowly, but surely.

The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center is also set to host the high school State One-Act Play Festival Feb. 5-6. The festival is split between three locations this year to accommodate guidelines, and SDSU will host the Class B schools.

“Our goals are not just to survive, but to thrive,” Reynolds saidl “And stay safe while doing it.”

Issue: Dining services do not meet student expectations.

In a year of changes and adaptations to the way campus operates, we can expect there to be some hiccups and issues to work out.

Now, over halfway through an “unprecedented” year, we as students are eagerly waiting for things to return to normal, and one aspect of the student experience at South Dakota State University has yet to meet student expectations: dining.

Reduced service hours, less dining options and technical issues with GrubHub have left students starving for answers about when dining will meet expectations.

No one is asking for 5-star meals or over the top options, simply that dining options be available to the most possible.

Want to eat breakfast on a Saturday? You have two options: Larson Commons and Starbucks.

But things do look up for

Saturday dinner; your options double to four with Larson’s, Chick-fil-a, Panda Express and Weary Wil’s.

Need to get dinner quick on Sunday night?

Weary Wil’s and Extreme Pita are your only options.

With the chaotic schedule of students between class, work and campus involvement, students’ eating times do not always fit into the 12-2 hours of The Market.

We do appreciate

the increase in healthier options on campus; however, when the availability is limited, it still keeps them out of reach for some.

In addition to the lack of options, ordering on GrubHub, which is recommended, takes longer, is unreliable and does not always reflect the availability of food at a given location.

After a full semester of irregular dining options, we’re growing more and more tired of Panda Express for every meal.

We just want to eat.

Marijuana is a good thing for South Dakota

HEMISHKA LOBIN Guest Columnist (She/Her) Marijuana to be legalized in South Dakota? Still hard to believe. But as of July 1, 2021, both medicinal and recreational marijuana will be legalized in the Mount Rushmore State.

According to Marijuana Business Daily, 69.9% of voters voted yes for medical marijuana (measure 26) and 54.2% voted yes for recreational marijuana. Adults who are above the age of 21 will be able to possess 1 ounce of cannabis, and registered patients will be able to possess up to 3 ounces.

But is it a good thing for South Dakotans? Yes, it is. As per the National Institute of Health, for over 3,000 years people

have been using cannabis to cure health issues such as epilepsy, chronic pain, alcoholism, drug addiction, depression and even cancer in some cases.

Besides, who doesn’t want to be happy?

Marijuana contains the ingredient THC, that makes the brain respond to pleasure such as eating and having sex. This gives the body a euphoric and relaxed feeling.

Marijuana also helps in improving the mood, boosts up energy and even helps in losing weight. Instead of feeling depressed or moody, with the legalization of marijuana, people can just go and buy weed from a dispensary instead of buying from illegal dealers.

Did you know that cannabis can also make

you creative? As stated by Elite Daily, a study found that cannabis causes psychotomimetic symptoms, which could make users create connections between ideas that aren’t necessarily related.

A coin has two sides, and so does marijuana and everything else that we do. One accurate example is alcohol.

Alcohol, when taken more than supposed to, can cause serious health issues and car accidents.

A study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that drivers who use marijuana are at a significantly lower risk for a car crash than drivers who consume alcohol.

So, should we just drive high all the time and

go wherever the whimsiness, fantasy and fun take us? Definitely not. Despite not causing car accidents as often as alcohol does, driving under the influence of marijuana should still be limited.

The New York Times mentioned that marijuana may harm the brains of those under 25. While marijuana may be safer than many legal drugs, consumption should be limited.

Thirty-five states legalized medicinal marijuana, and 15 legalized it completely, with New York being the latest.

If the majority of South Dakotans voted yes for weed, there must be a reason right? Maybe it’s not so bad after all.

Jacks sweep season series with University of North Dakota EVAN PATZWALD Reporter (He/Him) Two strong games over the weekend propelled the SDSU men’s basketball team to a 4-0 start in Summit League play.

An impressive first half of basketball pushed South Dakota State (10-3, 4-0) past the University of North Dakota (4-13,3-5) 92-73 Friday night at Frost Arena.

This was the Jacks first game in two weeks afte games with Omaha last week were canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

Any thoughts that the long layoff would slow the Jacks were erased after the game Friday.

“We had a really good week of practice,” head coach Eric Henderson said. “It was disappointing not to play games, but our group was together for the first time healthy all season to start the week.”

The Jackrabbits shot 10-of-15 points from 3-point range in the first half and finished 14-22 overall to outlast the Fighting Hawks. They led by as many as 24 Friday night.

D o u g l a s Wi l s o n started the game with eight points off of 4-4 shooting, but was a nonfactor the rest of the game with foul trouble. He picked up two quick fouls in the first minute of the second half and had to spend the majority of the rest of the game on the bench.

There were other players that stepped up in Wilson’s absence. Noah Freidel had a big game being back in the starting lineup for the first time after disciplinary actions were taken. He finished with 24 points, shooting 6-9 on 3-pointers.

“We have multiple guys who can all get on the floor and play at a high level, and they’ve come in and have done everything they’re supposed to do, and it’s awesome to have,” Freidel said when asked about the team’s

contributions.

UND started the second half with a 16-3 run to cut SDSU’s lead to 11. Not long after, first-year Jackrabbit Luke Appel got the crowd going after making a layup while getting fouled. A slew of buckets after this would put the Fighting Hawks away.

Appel finished with one of his best games of the season after transferring from Kirkwood Community College this season. He provided a nice spark off of the bench, finishing with 15 points.

He has improved since the season began and is always ready to play when his number is called.

“I knew it was going

to be a challenge to carve out minutes with some of the best big men in the Summit League on our team,” Appel said. “I just play my hardest and take what I get.”

UND’s Filip Rebraca led his team with 14 points, but was limited to five made field goals.

“I thought our guys did a good job of making it difficult for him,” Henderson said of his team’s defense. “I thought Luke did a good job defensively on him, and Doug when he was guarding him as well.”

North Dakota had not been swept thus far when going against conference opponents. They’ve split each of their games, so the

Jacks knew it was going to be a challenge to beat them twice in a row.

Night two of the backto-back for both teams was a little closer than the first, but SDSU was able to close out the series, beating UND 85-74.

It was knotted up at 22 midway through the first half before the Jackrabbits would go on to finish the half with a five point lead.

A strong start in the second half is just what SDSU needed, and the Jacks got that almost immediately. A lob from Appel to Wilson pushed the Jacks to their biggest lead of the game at 18.

Caleb Nero of North Dakota tried to will his team back into the game

with a 9-0 run on his own, cutting the Jackrabbit lead to nine with seven minutes left in the game.

Not long after, Freidel and Alex Arians both put up 3-pointers to put the game out of reach.

The second time around, it was Freidel in foul trouble throughout the game, picking up his fourth foul with 15 minutes remaining in the game. He only finished with five points.

“It’s not easy for a guy like Noah that has that scorer’s mentality to not get as many touches as he’s used to,” Henderson said. “But he has so much confidence in his teammates that they’re going to be able to make plays when he doesn’t.”

Wilson was more aggressive and had a stronger showing in Round 2, putting up 23 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore Baylor Scheierman scored two double-doubles in a row with 10 points and 10 rebounds on Friday night, followed by 14 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday night.

“We let him play his game and try to reward the guys when they do rebound,” Henderson said of Scheierman postgame. “He’s playing with so much confidence and freedom, and that’s when he’s at his best.”

Looking forward to next week, the Jackrabbits travel to Denver to play the Pioneers at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night.
