A TIME FOR TRANSFORMATION

A MESSAGE FROM DEAN Y. BARRY CHUNG When I started as Dean of the SDSU College of Education last June, I knew I had arrived at a special place. I was aware of the college’s reputation as a national leader in preparing teachers and educational leaders, building mutually beneficial community partnerships, and conducting transformative research. But over the past year — as I have witnessed the passion and commitment of our faculty, students, and alumni firsthand — I have learned that the impact we have on our community and our educational system is even deeper than I had imagined.

Since my arrival, I’ve seen our ranking in U.S. News & World Report rise to No. 53 nationally, and No. 40 among our public university peer institutions. I’ve seen our faculty achieve distinction, like when Dr. Audrey Hokoda, Professor in Child and Family Development, was awarded with SDSU’s highest teaching honor. I’ve seen us undertake groundbreaking interdisciplinary and interagency partnerships, like our inclusion in the US PREP initiative to improve teacher quality and educational equity across the nation. I’ve seen our alumni win Teacher of the Year honors in their districts, assume top leadership roles at colleges and universities, and work every day as unsung heroes to improve the lives of our most vulnerable populations. An unmistakably strong foundation is already in place.

Now, we find ourselves in a moment of even greater opportunity. SDSU has dynamic new leadership under President Adela de la Torre and exciting possibilities on the horizon as we prepare to expand our campus to Mission Valley. Our college stands ready to answer Dr. de la Torre’s call to produce global citizens, compassionate leaders and ethical innovators. Led by new Senior Associate Dean Karen Myers-Bowman, we will expand our commitment to meet the growing need for high-quality educators prepared to teach effectively in California’s increasingly diverse classrooms, and we will prioritize research that informs public policy and ultimately leads to more equity in education and a more just society. WHAT’S NEW IN 2019 SENIOR LEADERSHIP The college selected two associate deans in Spring 2019 to help execute the vision of Dean Y. Barry Chung. Dr. Karen Myers-Bowman was named Senior Associate Dean.

She manages the day-to-day operations of the college and oversees budgeting, governance and policy, academic programs and personnel. Dr. Cristian R. Aquino-Sterling has been appointed as the inaugural Associate Dean for Diversity and International Affairs. Starting this fall, he will take leadership on domestic and international diversity initiatives and collaborations.

EXTERNAL ADVISORY BOARD

The college created the External Advisory Board to the Dean. The board is made up of professionals in the San Diego community whose expertise puts them in a good position to advise the Dean on how to advance the mission and vision of the college.

MENTORSHIP AWARD

The college established an annual Mentor Award to recognize faculty members who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the mentorship of new or junior faculty. The Mentor Award honors faculty members who have provided outstanding support to their mentees and, in doing so, have positively impacted their professional development and academic success.

The first Mentor Award will be given during the 2019-20 academic year.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS Right: College of Education students visited Nepal in January 2019 as part of a two-week study abroad program to explore the country’s school system.

The college hired Michael Klitzing as the inaugural Marketing and Communications Officer to expand and centralize communications within COE and promote the college’s excellence to the wider SDSU community, regionally and nationally.

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT RANKINGS COLLEGE OF EDUCATION CLIMBS TO NO. 53 IN THE NATION

The College of Education continued its steady rise in the 2020 U.S. News & World Report ranking of top education schools, ranking No. 53. That’s up one spot from last year and a significant jump from just three years ago when COE ranked No. 69. COE also moved up three spots to No. 40 among public universities while the ranking held at No. 7 in California, No. 5 among public universities in the state and No. 1 in San Diego County.

The College of Education’s Rehabilitation Counseling Program placed No. 4 out of 96 rehabilitation counseling programs ranked

by U.S. News & World Report.

The program, which is delivered both in person and 100 percent online, moved up six spots from No. 10 from the previous rankings in 2015. Significantly, SDSU is the only program ranked in the Top 4 that does not feature a Ph.D. program. Meanwhile, COE’s online master’s degree program maintained its position as the top program in California, ranking No. 25 in the nation and No. 23 among public universities.

The 15-unit minor seeks to develop emotionally intelligent, transformational leaders capable of identifying their own key strengths and using them to engage others in higher levels of performance, purpose and collaboration.

SERVING HER OWN COMMUNITY Through her work at the Center for Community Counseling and Engagement (CCCE), marriage and family therapy graduate student Monica Sanders is able to provide counseling services to the very community in which she grew up. CCCE operates out of the Dede Alpert Center for Community Engagement building in San Diego’s underserved City Heights neighborhood, mere steps from where Sanders used to play as a child.

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ADMINISTRATIVE CREDENTIALING

EDL faculty work with principal preparation partners to identify the behaviors and dispositions of effective school leadership.

Through a $7.5 million grant from the Wallace Foundation and $600,000 from the Stuart Foundation, the Department of Educational Leadership (EDL) is transforming the future of administrative credentialing in California. SDSU faculty have mentored faculty at Sonoma State University, University of Redlands, Cal State Fullerton, Sacramento State, REACH Institute in Oakland, Los Angeles Unified School District and Placer County Office of Education in redesigning or developing their administrative credentialing programs. EDL faculty have also served in the design and pilot testing of a new California Administrative Performance Assessment that will become required of all programs in the state.

TRANSFORMING TEACHER PREPARATION SDSU was selected to participate in US PREP, a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded coalition committed to improving teacher quality and diversity in underserved communities.

The funding from US PREP will support Garden PLOT, an innovative partnership between SDSU’s College of Education and the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District that sends teaching credential candidates in general education, special education and bilingual education into classrooms to do their student teaching collaboratively. The idea is that having candidates from multiple disciplines learn and solve problems together will produce teachers more equipped to work with all students.

IMPROVING SERVICES FOR CHILDREN

Four College of Education faculty members are investigators focused on child services research at The Child and Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC), an inter-institutional research consortium of faculty from local and national institutions such as UC San Diego and the University of Southern California. Dr. Rachel Haine-Schlagel, assistant professor in child and family development, is focused on improving parent engagement and child therapy services, while Dr. Kelsey Dickson, assistant professor in child and family development; Dr. Sarah Rieth, assistant professor in child and family development; and Dr. Jessica Suhrheinrich, assistant professor in special education, conduct research to improve autism services. The four investigators secured more than $800,000 in research funding for the 2018-19 fiscal year.

Through community partnerships, SDSU students have invaluable experiential opportunities in the field while making a positive impact on the San Diego region and beyond.

FILLING GAPS FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD MENTAL HEALTH In San Diego County’s most vulnerable communities, individuals seeking mental health services for their young children often deal with long waitlists caused by a lack of early childhood therapists.

And because of this shortage, SDSU has often struggled to find quality early childhood mental health placements with supervisors trained in early childhood. Dr. Lisa Linder, assistant professor in the Department of Child and Family Development (CFD) stepped in to fill those voids. Supported by philanthropic funding, Linder was able to open an early childhood mental health clinic in Fall 2018. Operating out of the Dede Alpert Center for Community Engagement in the City Heights neighborhood, the center has helped meet the community’s need for mental health services for families and children from prenatal to 8-years-old.

PROVIDING COUNSELING ASSISTANCE IN TIJUANA For years, migrants stranded at the U.S.-Mexico border have found help from volunteer activists offering advocacy and assistance with their dayto-day needs. But the recent influx of thousands of Central American asylum seekers into Tijuana have strained many of the human rights defenders to their breaking point. In early 2019, SDSU clinical counseling students, faculty and alumni formed the Transborder Crimmigration Project, addressing the nexus between criminal law and immigration for local students and communities. FACULTY HONORS AND ACHIEVEMENTS The extraordinary faculty in the College of Education earn university-wide and national recognition on a regular basis. Here are a few of the major awards, honors and distinctions earned during the 2018-19 academic year:

Dr. Y. Barry Chung, dean of the College of Education, was named recipient of the 2019 Eminent Career Award from the National Career Development Association (NCDA) — the world’s oldest association in the counseling profession. Awarded to one person per year, the Eminent Career Award is the highest honor the organization bestows.

Dr. Charles Degeneffe, professor in rehabilitation counseling, was named to the California Department of Rehabilitation Traumatic Brain Injury Advisory Board, a 12-member board made up of researchers, physicians, traumatic brain injury survivors and family members focused on determining what legislation and awareness efforts are needed at the statewide level.

Dr. Nancy Frey, professor of educational leadership, was the College of Education’s 20182019 recipient of the Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributions to the University.

Dr. Audrey Hokoda, professor in child and family development, was named the 2019 recipient of the University Senate Excellence in Teaching Award — San Diego State University’s highest honor for teaching excellence.

Dr. Lisa Lamb, Qualcomm Endowed Professor of Mathematics Education, was named the College of Education’s 2019-2020 recipient of the Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributions to the University.

Dr. Marilee Bresciani Ludvik, professor of postsecondary educational leadership, received the Robert H. Shaffer Award for Academic Excellence as a Graduate Faculty Member from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).

Dr. Fred McFarlane, professor emeritus and former chair of ARPE, received the 2019 National Council on Rehabilitation Education Distinguished Career in Rehabilitation Education Award — the highest honor for educators in rehabilitation counseling.

Dr. Kris Rodenberg, lecturer in teacher education who also teaches high school at Mt. Everest Academy, was named a runnerup for San Diego Unified School District Teacher of the Year — one of just six honorees in a district with more than 9,000 teachers Dr. Marissa Vasquez, assistant professor in postsecondary educational leadership, was appointed to the San Diego Community College Board of Trustees Advisory Council.

STUDENT SUCCESS VOICES FROM THE CLASS OF 2019 Students in the College of Education come from all walks of life, but they have one thing in common — they aspire to make a difference for future generations as teachers, counselors, therapists, administrators and educational leaders. Here are a few of their stories:

Erica Alfaro, who earned her master’s in education with a concentration in counseling, dedicated her master’s degree to her farmworker parents. This graduation photo went viral and Erica’s inspiring story was told on several news outlets, including CNN.

“At my age in Korea, that’s when you start thinking about retirement.

If I were there, changing careers at my age would be hard. But it’s possible here — and it’s possible because I have professors and a support network that has been wonderful.”

—Cecilia Chung, who took a major step toward achieving her dream of becoming a teacher by receiving her bilingual multiple-subject credential through the Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education.

“It pushed us in many ways from a discipline point of view, but also seeing yourself as a scholar and someone adding to the academic community — I think there’s something really exciting about that.

I think years ago we felt like we were outsiders, but now we feel like we’re really at the table, able to influence conversations where in the past we might have been on the periphery.”

—Dr. Ernesto Villanueva, who earned his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership with a PK-12 concentration, along with his brother Froylán Villanueva. Ernesto, the executive director of technology and instruction at Chula Vista Elementary School District, defended his dissertation just one hour after Froylán, Principal at Southwest High School in the Sweetwater Union School District.

ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS Dr. Julianna Barnes ’91, ’10, received the SDSU Alumni Award of Distinction.

A graduate of COE’s Master of Science in Counseling program and Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, Barnes serves as president of Cuyamaca College.

Dr. Jerry Buckley ’10 was named president of Reedley College. He is the fourth graduate of the Educational Leadership Concentration in Community College program to be named president of a community college.

Dr. Emelyn dela Pena ’98, ’09 has been named associate vice provost for inclusion, community and integrative learning at Stanford University. She is a graduate of the Master’s in Postsecondary Educational Leadership and Joint Ed.D. programs.

Don Dumas ’10, ’16 was named Teacher of the Year in Sweetwater Union High School District. The graduate of SDSU’s single-subject teacher credential program and Master’s in Teaching Online Program teaches history and coaches boys’ basketball at Bonita Vista High School.

Christopher “Kit” Sickels ’60, ’19 (H) was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from SDSU. Sickels, who attended kindergarten at SDSU’s on-campus Training School for Teachers, taught elementary school himself before embarking on a 56-year career in real estate. As the longest serving board chair of The Campanile Foundation, SDSU’s philanthropic auxiliary, Sickels was critical to the success of The Campaign for SDSU, which raised $815 million to support and strengthen the university.
