- The UMC women’s basketball team picked up a split with Upper Iowa University and Winona State University. The Golden Eagles defeated Upper Iowa 79-59. UMC had five players score in double-figure in the win over the Peacocks. The Golden Eagles would have all five starters score in double-figures led by 18 points from Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., F, Perham, Minn./Applied Studies) and 17 points from Alexa Thielman (Jr., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science). In addition to Moenkedick and Thielman, Ebony Livingston (Sr., G/F, Minneapolis, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds. Emily Gruber (Fr., F/C, Monticello, Minn./ Undecided) added 12 points and eight boards, while Micaela Noga (Fr., G, Parkers Prairie, Minn./Health Management) had 10 points.

The Golden Eagles fell 70-58 last Saturday to Winona State University. The Golden Eagles were led by Thielman’s 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles are now 9-11 (8-8 NSIC) and remain in the hunt to host the first round of the NSIC Tournament as they are in a three-way tie for third place in the NSIC North with St. Cloud State University and University of Minnesota Duluth.

- The University of Minnesota Crookston football team announced the signing of 28 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent or Offers of Admission to join the Golden Eagle program. The signing class is the second under Head Coach Mike Fritze. The Golden Eagle coaching staff looked to put an added emphasis on players from the region, and accomplished just that signing 17 players from the Midwest region (including Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Manitoba). The 17 regional players matches UMC’s total from last year’s recruiting class for the Region.

- The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer program announced the addition of nine players to their program as Coach Joe Alianiello announced his 2015 signing class.

The Golden Eagles signed Caitlin Dumond (GK, Harker Heights, Texas/Harker Heights H.S.), Tori Hill (MF/F, Brandon, Manitoba/Vincent Massey H.S.), Sage Kermes (MF, Hayward, Minn./Albert Lea H.S.), Madison Korus (D, Lexington, Minn./Chicago State University), Amanda Nennig (MF/F, Wrightstown, Wis./Kaukauna H.S.), Taylor Peterson (MF, 5-7, Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck State College), Sam Rarick (GK, 5-4, East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks H.S.), Hannah Riveland (MF, 5-8, Moorhead, Minn.) and Emily Ryder (D, 5-1, Hudson, Wis./Hudson H.S.) to National Letters of Intent.

- The UMC men’s basketball team fell in a pair of games last weekend, falling 63-55 to Upper Iowa University in a hard0-fought contest and 76-52 to Winona State University. The Golden Eagles were led by a strong performance from Lucas Reller (Sr., G, Lead, S.D./Management) against Upper Iowa, as he had 16 points, while Derrick Redd, Jr. (Jr., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management)had 12 points and John Hughes (Jr., F, San Diego, Calif./Management) had 10. Against Winona State, UMC was led by 10 points from Redd and 10 from Tim Lubke (Sr., G, St. Paul, Minn./Sports and Rec Management).

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Jan. 29 - Feb. 4

- Alexa Thielman (Jr., Women’s Basketball, Buffalo, Minn..) averaged 19.5 points per game for the Golden Eagles as they picked up a split on the weekend with a win over Upper Iowa University Friday and a loss to Winona State University Saturday. Thielman was 15-of-26 for 57.7 percent from the field on the weekend and 6-of-13 for 46.2 percent from beyond the arc.

Thielman tallied 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and 2-of-6 from beyond the arc in a win over Upper Iowa Friday. Saturday, Thielman tallied 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Thielman is averaging 16.9 points per game on the season.

- Lucas Reller (Sr., Men’s Basketball, Lead, S.D.) averaged 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles in losses to Upper Iowa University and Winona State University. Reller, a defensive stopper for the Golden Eagles performed well on defense in both games but had his best offensive game of the season against Upper Iowa. Reller had 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc with six rebounds and one steal in 37 minutes of play. Against Winona State, Reller had three points, one steal and one rebound.

For the Week of Jan. 22-28

- Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., Women’s Basketball, Perham, Minn.) veraged 10 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as the Golden Eagles lost a pair of games to MSU Moorhead and No. 15 Northern State. Moenkedick tallied 12 points and nine rebounds in the 68-63 loss to MSU Moorhead Friday. Moenkedick was 6-of-15 from the field and added an assist and a steal against the Dragons.

Saturday, Moenkedick tallied eight points and six boards. She was 4-of-10 from the field. Moenkedick is averaging 14.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game on the season.

- Ashley Martell (Sr., Women’s Basketball, Somerset, Wis.) holds a 3.99 Grade Point Average (GPA) in Health Science) and consistently been one of UMC’s top student-athletes throughout her time with the Golden Eagles. The senior has been honored twice on the NSIC All-Academic team. Martell also earned the Butch Raymond Scholarship, given to a UMC student who is working toward a career in a health-related field and has a 3.20 GPA or higher.

- Kenzie Church (Sr., Women’s Basketball, Fairmount, N.D.) has a 3.88 GPA in Management and also been among UMC’s top student-athletes during her time in Crookston. Church has been honored on the NSIC All-Academic team.
