SAMFORD

Did you see the amazing tent city set-up in Baden Powell Park recently?

It was the temporary home to more than 400 Scouts and Girl Guides who descended on the park for the annual Agoonoree Scout Camp - a weeklong, transformative experience for sixty young individuals with special needs, which commenced on 16 September. Agoonoree offers these campers the chance to embrace the Scout life, partaking in activities such as abseiling, pioneering, outdoor bush cooking and archery, all while immersing themselves in the Scout way of living.

Locally, Agoonoree is affectionately known as a “feel-good tent city,” comprising over 130 tents, 3,200 tent pegs and over 3km of bunting. Operating for the past 42 years in Queensland, it faced disruptions due to Covid lockdowns in 2020. Young people with special needs travel from as far as Gladstone and Townsville, accompanied by able-bodied campers who are eager to assist their special needs counterparts.

The camp provides Scouts and Girl Guides who are physically able, with a direct insight into the daily challenges faced by young people their own age. Agoonoree’s aim is to enhance awareness and provide education to young people on how to accommodate and support youth with special needs.

AND GIRL GUIDES

For many of the young people with special needs attending the camp, this marks their first time away from their parents and guardians, a significant step that can be intimidating. However, this camp not only offers a transformative experience for the campers but also provides much-needed respite for their families and caregivers.

Throughout the week, Agoonoree functions as a self-contained mini city in Samford, complete with its own medical centre, onsite newspaper, radio station, and even an exclusive movie theatre night for the 400 campers.

Chief Commissioner for Scouts

Queensland, Geoff Doo, shared his thoughts, stating, “Agoonoree is an annual highlight for many young people on our calendar. It’s remarkable to see this event continue to captivate the youth of Queensland, stemming from its inception in 1979. The Queensland version of Agoonoree originated when Peter Blatch, Andrew Dufficy and I brought the concept back to Queensland, after visiting the 3rd Nippon Agoonoree in Japan. This is just one of the many exciting Adventurous, Fun, Challenging and Inclusive activities Scouting has to offer today’s youth.”

No camp is complete without food, with over 7,200 slices of bread, 4,800 eggs, more than 3,500 apples, plus over 2 tons of meat and poultry products to be consumed.

In 2023, Agoonoree is taking significant steps to reduce its environmental impact by minimising general waste and transitioning to compostable options whenever possible. The camp continues to collaborate with local authorities to ensure its sustainability. The special needs campers owe their opportunity to the generous sponsorships from community groups such as Lions, Apex, Zonta, Trefoil Guilds and politicians at a Local, State and Federal level. BETTER BEE BENEFITS

There’s been a hive of activity in the bee world recently with University of the Sunshine Coast researchers uncovering a nutrient-rich product in honeybee hives across Australia. Sixteen new types of Australian high-grade propolis, or ‘bee glue’, have been identified, buzzing with antioxidants to potentially pollinate new health products.

This finding may not instantly impact local hobby beekeepers, but Tim Edwards from Camp Mountain’s Taroma Raw Honey notes there may be scope for propolis harvesting in the future.

“For a hobby bee operation like mine, the amount of propolis able to be collected would be minimal,” he said.

“The varied usage and benefits for propolis is exciting and therefore the ability to harvest propolis from the hives in the future will be an important skill to increase revenue streams and make use of this by-product that bees make.”

The new research may still bring the health properties of bee-related products into the spotlight.

Tim harvested his first honey in 2018 and maximises the health benefits of his bees’ hard work by selling raw honey rather than heat-treating it.

“Whilst researching bees and honey related articles, I learnt how beneficial raw honey is to us. It has been a remedy throughout history and has shown to be very beneficial to health and medical related things. Some hospitals and medical facilities use it to treat wounds,” Tim said.

“When it is pasteurised, as is most bought in supermarkets, a lot of the nutrients are destroyed and this in turn minimises the benefits. It is believed that honey contains antioxidants, it can have anti-inflammatory effects as wells as antibacterial and antifungal properties. It has also been said

it is good for mental health,” he said.

“To add to this, there is nothing better than the taste and texture of raw honey. It provides the taste buds with a magical experience.”

Since taking up bee keeping, Tim gains his own daily buzz by connecting with nature.

“I find it relaxing working in the outdoors and this gives me the opportunity to be outdoors, working with the little amazing creatures that can become very protective of their hives. It is fantastic having them flying around and feeling comfortable settling on my bee keeping suit whilst I check the hives,” he said.

“It is also interesting watching them scatter to the different flowers and seeing them take pollen or nectar and carry it back to their hives.”

Passing his knowledge down to future generations, Tim’s children and niece all have their own hives and help him harvest the honey, extract, strain and bottle ready for sale.

Taroma Raw Honey is available at 171 Camp Mountain Road, Camp Mountain and 30 McCormack Avenue, Ashgrove, with

ARCHERY AUSTRALIA NATIONAL TARGET TITLES - ON NOW

New shade structures have recently been erected over the shooting area at the grounds of the Samford Valley Target Archers and they’re performing their first important function by protecting archers involved in the Archery Australia National Target Championships. The cost of these shades has been supported by grants from State and Local Governments and a contribution from the Club.

Last year’s National Championships were great – and this year’s is even “greater” with

archers competing from all over Australia, internationally from New Zealand and Fiji, as well as four archers who have nominated their home countries as either Egypt or Namibia.

Practice day started on Wednesday (27th) and the tournament will continue to Monday 4th October. There are 270 archers registered for 680 shooting places in three tranches of competition – a 144 arrow round, a 90 arrow round, and a 72 arrow round.

Thursday 28th was the busiest day with 54 targets across the whole width of the grounds, and 217 archers shooting distances from 30 metres to 90 metres. Bow types range from longbows to highly involved compound bows. Potentially a long day because of the numbers, but no doubt some good scores were shot.

On Friday 29th, 247 archers will shoot a 90 arrow round in two flights, and Saturday

will see 218 archers shooting a 72 arrow ‘ranking round’.

The ranking round will establish the standings to commence in the elimination matches. These will lead into medal awards for various teams and individual archers on Sunday and the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals on Monday, the final day.

Archery tournaments are colourful and energetic and well worth having a look at. Spectators are welcome (no dogs, please).

In a final note, Alison Hagaman, Club official and local Samford resident, has been selected as a Judge at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.

GOLD’S SCRUB

Gold’s Scrub is a rare remaining remnant (never cleared) of about 2 hectares of Lowland Hoop Pine dry vine forest, on SEQWater land at the end of Gold’s Scrub Lane, Samsonvale. In 1970 the Queensland Government had been asked to declare the Scrub a Nature Reserve, because this was one of the few remnants of this ecosystem to survive. They declined because it was too degraded. In fact, there was a general assumption that it was too severely degraded to ever return to health.

The ecological restoration of the forest commenced in 1998 with SEQWater supporting Men of the Trees and Greening Australia volunteers, both of which organisations ceased their involvement after many years of work. It continues to be maintained by volunteers supported by Pine Rivers Catchment Association.

Degradation was caused by a catastrophic infestation of Catsclaw creeper, plus many other major weeds. Catsclaw was covering the tree trunks, sometimes with many layers of stems, and was also carpeting the forest floor. This suffocating carpet meant the forest was almost unable to regenerate.

The restoration of the Scrub has occurred by removing the burden of weeds, which has allowed the forest to recover by natural regeneration. Initially, the vertical vines of Catsclaw were cut and swabbed with Glyphosate and the carpet was sprayed. The exciting result was that native forest floor grasses and tree species started to regenerate.

Follow up just once a month for the past 25 years is bringing the forest towards being weed free. The marvel of this regeneration continues, providing inspiration for the volunteers and is a great reward for the work done. Many graduates in environmental studies have worked on the site, which has helped to consolidate their ideas on ecological restoration. This is a good example of how even degraded areas have value, as they can be returned to health through ecological restoration efforts.

This has been a slow restoration and slow is good because it allows time for all the life in the ecosystem to adjust as changes are made. Restoration does cause some damage inevitably and removing weeds in great numbers quickly is a shock to an area, and creatures suffer.

Currently, we work on the last Wednesday morning of the month but are considering an occasional weekend session.

Citizen Science Project

On 23 August, during Sustainability Week at QUT, some of our Eco-Corridor birders led a guided walk around the SERF Camp Mountain property for university staff and visitors. An enthusiastic group recorded 40 species, with the highlights being clear sightings of White-throated Treecreeper and Golden Whistler on the return leg. Afterwards, there was a short presentation on our TERN citizen science project, followed by refreshments kindly provided by QUT.

Bushcare

On Sunday 10 September we had a solid turnout of volunteers for our monthly bushcare. Once again, the main task was weeding, with one team focusing on the upper river bank planting and another continuing the work in rainforest revegetation zone P1.

By the end of the afternoon, the Council vehicle was once again brim full of bags of weeds for disposal. After the hard work, our volunteers enjoyed a delicious afternoon

tea, kindly provided by our parent body, the SDPPA. Our next bushcare working bee will be held on Sunday 8 October from 2pm to 4pm. We still have a lot of weeding to do, so would love a big turn out.

Site signage

On 12 September we were thrilled to see our new information signs installed onto their concrete bases: one facing the netball carpark and the other at the top of the hill. (pictured) These signs were kindly funded and delivered by City of Moreton Bay, for which we are very grateful. They comprise a brief welcome to the Eco-Corridor, some information about our project, a site map and photos showing the progress of our revegetation work.

We hope these signs generate further interest in our project, encourage walkers to use the Eco-Trail and perhaps inspire a few more people to become volunteers.

10-year anniversary

2013 marks the 10-year anniversary of the foundation of the Eco-Corridor project. Since then, we have held two major community plantings (rainforest and eucalypt woodland), organised over 100 working bees and carried out over 100 bird surveys.

We have also developed an extensive educational program for the community, schools and universities. To celebrate these milestones, we will be holding a workshop at the Samford Community Hub on the morning of Saturday 4 November (details of speakers to be announced later). We hope to see you there.

A CONTRIBUTING COMMUNITY

As a communityfunded organisation, Samford RDA relies on the financial support of individuals, groups and businesses – and this month we welcomed contributions from both adults and children in the Samford and surrounding area.

Members of Albany Creek Lions Club visited Samford RDA’s centre at the showgrounds to present a $1000 donation which will be used to run the weekly program in the final term of 2023. The visit was an opportunity for the Lions to inspect the facilities and learn how their support improves the lives of people with a disability. RDA horse Misty was particularly interested to know what was going on.

The Rotary Club of Samford Valley, a longtime supporter of Samford RDA, transferred its annual horse sponsorship to RDA horse Peter Pan following the sad passing of their sponsored horse Blue. Blue was a valued member of the herd, but unfortunately, he recently suffered very severe colic from which he was unable to recover.

Peter Pan has been sponsored for many years by Samford Patchworkers, whose amazing generosity over the years contributed towards his purchase, saddle and ongoing care. The Patchworkers even handmade a colourful patchwork rug for Peter Pan, which he wears on extra special occasions.

Samford RDA thanks Samford Patchworkers for their wonderful support over the years. It has been greatly appreciated.

Year 6 students from Samford State School selected several local charities, including Samford RDA, as beneficiaries of their Market Day Project. The students designed and created a product to sell at the school’s Market Day, with proceeds going to their chosen organisations.

Samford RDA received $683.95 from the students’ efforts and generosity. Thank you to Jonty, Remy, Wyatt, Alexis, Lola, Frankie,

PREPARE NOW

The past few wet years have resulted in ideal growing conditions for potential fire fuel. Recently, the weather has turned quite dry and that potential fire fuel has cured and is now dry and ready to burn across a number of locations. Mostly, we still have good ground moisture, but if the forecasted dry seasons eventuate and the ground dries out, then the fire risk could become of real concern. Now would be a good time to prepare properties without being under the pressure that we may experience when smoke is in the air.

It is well known that for most of us, being at risk and under pressure does not result in clear thinking. It would make sense to take advantage of this quiet time to prepare property for the fire season and maybe fine tune evacuation and survival plans.

Council and Rural Fire Services have excellent material to help prepare a plan. It would be good for that plan to function without power and phone services that may have become overwhelmed during

an emergency. Plan for no outside help so that any forthcoming assistance would be a bonus.

For those living on a hillside, remember that fire travels quickly uphill, so try to remove or reduce the fuel loading down below your house or outbuildings. (Don’t forget to remove cardboard boxes and other flammable material stacked under houses and sheds)

Each year as conditions dry out, we notice that residents have forgotten the importance of clearing flammable build up from around houses and structures. Light vegetation litter such as leaves and small sticks should be removed. Good results can be quickly achieved by simply raking or sweeping up leaf litter. If a petrol or battery blower is available, then the whole job could be quickly completed.

Some residence point out that light vegetation and leaf litter is best left to rot down. Mulching is good when conditions are damp, but if it has dried out and flammable is it best removed. If flammable vegetation must be left to mulch, then try to reduce the height by crushing it right down to the ground. Vegetation fuel in close contact with the ground contains less oxygen and if ignited, the flame height would be lower, resulting in a less intense fire.

If you are on acreage, then try to cut fire

breaks around and across your property so that you have a line of defence from which to fight a wild fire. Remember, for a fire break to be effective it should encircle the block of ground so that potential fire can be contained within that block. A two metre break around a block of country is good, but a break wide enough for vehicular access all the way around gives you the best possible chance of defending that block. A good break is also going to be of great benefit if you plan to conduct a hazard reduction burn on the block.

If it is a Council requirement to provide a dedicated fire fighting water tank, then please make sure that it is fitted with the regulation 50 mm/2 inch regulation male Camlock fitting.

To best prepare for an emergency, make sure that a Rural Fire appliance can quickly back up to the tank outlet to enable quick connection from tank to the appliance pump.

Some properties are so surrounded by fuel that it would not only be dangerous for emergency evacuation, but also risky for fire fighters entering that property.

Remember that if the Rural Fire Service is called to your property, the primary duty of care of the officer in charge of an appliance is crew safety. The Fire Service will not enter your property if it is considered unsafe for fire fighters.

Please remember that Rural Fire Service Personnel are unpaid volunteers and give up their time for the betterment of the community. For more and detailed information go to www.ruralfires.qld.gov.au

BUSHFIRE SMOKE AND HEALTH STUDY Families Needed

South East Queenslanders living near bushland and green spaces are being encouraged to join a University of Queensland study on the health impacts of bushfire smoke. Dr Dwan Vilcins from the UQ Child Health Research Centre said the study aimed to help protect communities in the future.

“We are calling on volunteers to register their interest in participating in the study, with a preference for families with children aged between 5 and 18,” Dr Vilcins said.

“Researchers will use the register to formally recruit study participants when local Councils confirm a planned burn close to their home, or when bushfire smoke is affecting air quality in their area. Households that sign up will be asked to monitor the air quality in their home so we can understand if it worsens during these events.”

Researchers will also investigate how household characteristics enable air pollutants to contaminate indoor air. Dr Vilcins said bushfire smoke can cause health

issues including reduced lung function and shortness of breath.

“Bushfire smoke caused around 2,000 respiratory hospitalisations and 1,300 asthma emergencies in Australia during the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-2020,” she said.

“Our aim is to better understand the impact of bushfire smoke exposure, particularly on children, so that we can help improve community wellbeing through environmental research and policy reform.”

“The devastating fires that recently destroyed large parts of Canada, Greece and Hawaii emphasise the significance of our research in helping to protect communities now and in the future.”

Households in Moreton Bay and other regions interested in participating in this study can register at: https://survey.app.uq.edu. au/prescribed-burns-study-interest-2023 University of Qld Press

Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet George!

A long time ago, a wise Scotsman sitting atop a rocky mountain, generously shared with me the secret to a long, prosperous, healthy life, but I couldn’t understand a word he said. That’s pretty much the same with our George! His sing-song Edinburgh accent tends to get more challenging when he’s excited, and he’s always excited, which is what we love about him.

Earlier in life, after a modest career as a budding TV engineer, he wanted something more adventurous so moved to Canberra, became Vice Consul in Samoa in the early 2000’s and ended up working with the Australian Embassy in Tokyo after the Fukushima disaster in 2011. That may explain why nothing fazes him these days, he’s done his bit for humanity and now chills out at his own pace.

A great yarn spinner who jumps at the chance to help anyone at any time, George is SAMS’ appointed Secretary, meaning he’s the only one of us who actually knows what’s going on and cannily keeps it to himself to protect the innocent. Come to our Shed around 9 o’clock on a Tuesday morning for coffee and no doubt you’ll bump into him, although you’ll have plenty of warning because you’ll probably hear him first!

We’ve been taking the opportunity to find out how some of our young locals are forging their own way in and around the Valley.

Golden Fox BJJ

As a martial art, Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) has taken the world by storm and the latest gym in town ensures Samford doesn’t miss out. Located on Station St, Golden Fox BJJ has been rolled out by Eamonn Cox, who is keen to share the benefits of this sport with the local community.

Both a natural entrepreneur and teacher with a desire to keep kids active, Eamonn’s first foray into starting a business came in the form of operating his own swimming school.

“I have always been passionate about teaching and have loved working with kids.

This started with moving to China as an 18-year-old to teach English, followed by coming back to Australia and starting my own swimming school,” he said.

“Whilst teaching swimming, I started training BJJ for my own fitness and absolutely fell in love. I knew almost instantly I wanted to have my own gym one day and that I wanted to train and teach BJJ for the rest of my life.”

A number of Eamonn’s friends in Samford had expressed how much they wanted to dedicate more time to BJJ training, but were unable to access their gyms easily.

Opening a BJJ gym in the area felt like an opportunity for Eamonn to share his skills and passion while engaging his small business knowledge.

“Martials arts is growing in popularity in Australia and I believe it is a life skill, like

swimming, that everyone should learn. I feel honoured to be able to provide a safe, fun space for people in Samford to start their martial arts journey,” he said.

Eamonn has found numerous benefits to BJJ extending from the physical benefits of increased fitness and strength.

“Jiu-jitsu is fantastic for developing mental strength and resilience, as well as your self-confidence as you grow your ability to defend yourself. You will also find yourself a part of a very supportive community who is always looking to help you grow,” Eamonn said.

“I love the technical side of jiu-jitsu; it is like a game of chess but with your body where you need to solve the problem in real time,” he said. “I also love how immersive the sport is. I find it a perfect stress reliever as the level of focus needed takes you away from thinking about your life outside the gym. It is 60 minutes of pure you time.”

Even though Golden Fox has only been running for a few weeks, there has been a significant amount of interest from both adults and kids alike.

“Everyone is welcome at Golden Fox and if you’re not sure if you are willing to give it a try just yet, you are always more than welcome to come along and watch a class with us. We look forward to meeting more of the Samford community on the mats soon!”

Qld Seniors Month is now in its 63rd year. Celebrated throughout the month of October, it aims to provide opportunities for people across all generations to connect and challenge our own stereotypical views of ageing and the aged. It also provides opportunities for people to discover local programs, services and volunteering opportunities, which may assist in reducing social isolation.

Meals on Wheels Moreton Bay Region Inc. (MoW) is actively involved in providing an essential service to the Samford and surrounding community and has identified new residents as well as socially isolated clients in this community who would like to engage in activities.

To celebrate and promote Queensland Seniors month, they will be hosting a morning tea community event on 26th October from 9am-12pm at the Samford Community Hub, 2204 Mt Samson Road, Samford. The purpose of the event is for seniors to drop in, meet local interest groups and learn more about the events and activities they can participate in.

At our Annual General Meeting held on 13th September 2023, members were elected as Office Bearers for 2023-2024. Peter Cargill was re-elected as Vice-President, Pat Hennessey re-elected Treasurer and Jan Quin re-elected Secretary. Congratulations to all.

The renewed version of www.greenstreet. net.au acknowledges that the trend for ‘fast fashion’ has a massive environmental and social impact. The use of energy, unsustainable materials and transport in the fashion industry builds emissions by the truckful. Not to mention the tonnes of clothing waste that is dumped every day and the very poor working conditions that some clothing factories have. Regrettably, modern slavery is alive and well in some clothing manufacturing.

Green Street lets us know that by responsibly making, purchasing, using and/ or recycling clothing and fashion items, we can be both fashionable AND sustainable. When you join greenstreet.net.au you can achieve a Sustainable Fashion Badge If you do four or more of the actions listed below.

• Repair worn clothing when feasible.

• Donate good quality used clothing to charities.

• Buy locally-made clothing.

• Make our own clothes.

• Only buy ethically produced clothing.

• Question the need for new clothing before making purchases.

If you have ideas for other actions that create more fashionable clothing let us know here via info@greenstreet.net.au or call 0407 190 162.

Many thanks go to David Reed of Samford Scouts for helping ensure the recent two day book sale was a great success. Thankfully the weather held good until the end. Thank you to Samford State School for also supporting the event and all those who donated beautiful books - many of which have been added into the “Keeper” collection.

The trailer housed most of the non-fiction books. Four tables of fiction books were also outside the Scout Den and inside was packed with children’s books, toys, jigsaw puzzles and games (for all ages) as well as home baking, preserves and some Bric a Brac.

Eight wonderful children from both Samford State School and Ferny Grove State School came along to help out over the weekend. Thank you to Ellen, Izzy 1, Izzy 2, Elva, Evey, Georgie, Stanley and Hayden. You were all a credit to both your school and your families.

Many thanks also Megan, Marie-Ann, Ray, Yvonne, Janette, Evelyn and Linda for helping out, including set up and pack up.

Flattening empty boxes at the end of the day gives a satisfying feeling of knowing sales have gone well.

CLS would also separately like to thank City of Moreton Bay and Cr Darren Grimwade for his support in the successful outcome of a recent Local Community Support Grant application. By the time of printing, a replacement printer and external hard drives will be on hand.

In the meantime, the Keeper collection continues to be sorted and shelved as time permits.

Amazing teamwork was displayed at the recent Masters event at SGVPC. A huge shout out to Irene in the canteen who fed riders from local and distant clubs all over Southeast Qld throughout the three day event. All the club volunteers came together and the event was very successful.

Congratulations must also go to the riders who have achieved and completed their certification work in the last 6 monthsCaitlin, Annie, Sienna, Miranda, Lily and Charlotte. They were assessed with both written and practical tasks and all achieved their grades.

Next muster 8am 8th October. Follow our Facebook Page for more up to date details.

Good luck to our riders heading out to Millmerrin for the annual State Pony Club Formal and Sporting Gymkhana. We can’t wait to hear how you all go as we know how much work goes into competing at a State competition. It’s fabulous that so many riders have qualified for this event.

Watch out – Samford Live has a sevenpiece ska band coming for you in October!

The Seven of Ska play a joyous repertoire of originals and hand-picked covers. Inspired by the greats of reggae, their music draws on influences from soul, rock & roll, roots reggae, a touch of jazz, Latin and funk, all held together with the grooves of ska.

Produced right here in Brisbane, The Seven of Ska continue the tradition of combining ska with genres like soul and jazz to give a new, exciting sound using a classic line up.

This highly proficient group features four horns, a rhythm section of bass and drums,

PLANT-INSECT INTERACTIONS

At our next meeting on Tuesday 3 October in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at the new time of 6.45pm for a 7.00pm start, we are thrilled to welcome young entomologist Jessa Thurman. Jessa moved to Australia from Arkansas USA in 2018 to pursue her interest in insect ecology. Her outsider perspective helped her to appreciate the unique beauty of Australian insects. She posted many fabulous photographs on Instagram, which led to her being approached by Australian Geographic to write a book on ‘Australia’s Incredible Insects’ for kids of all ages. Jessa is currently completing her PhD at the University of Queensland. Her talk will be about plantinsect interactions.

Jessa says: “Insects are often thought of as pests, but there are many services that they provide to people and our planet. Get to know some of your smaller neighbours from Queensland, including the pollinators of ancient Gondwanan plants, who only appear seasonally, and borers of our eucalyptus trees, who end up making homes for other animals.”

Visitors are welcome and attendees are encouraged to bring along labelled native plant specimens for our ‘show and tell’ segment. This month we will be featuring native groundcovers. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and draw the plant raffle (bring a little cash).

Our September meeting featured Nev Bone who introduced us to a wide range of native orchids. We learned that there are 30,000 species of orchids worldwide (one of the largest plant families), 80% of which are terrestrial. The epiphytic orchids we often

think of are mainly confined to the tropics and subtropics. The highest concentration of orchids in Australia is in south-west WA. Local species include the Orange Blossom Orchid (Sarcochilus falcatus) and Red Rope Orchid (Bulbophyllum schillerianum), which are both found at Mount Glorious. Some Australian orchids are widely distributed, such as the spectacular Rock Orchid (Dendrobium speciosum). We thank Nev for a very inspiring presentation.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT

Nominations Open

Do you know someone who makes a difference in our Moreton Bay region?

Now is the time to let them know that they are appreciated by nominating them for the City of Moreton Bay 2024 Australia Day Awards. They might be a local hero, or a quiet achiever - there are so many people in our communities who do so much within our sporting organisations, arts and culture, the environment or volunteering at a local school. They don’t do it for the recognition, but it is great that there is a way for them to realise their worth in the community.

There are two categories open for nominations.

The Citizen of the Year Award will recognise an Australian Citizen living in the Moreton Bay region; and the Mayor’s Community Spirit Award is open to anyone - they are not required to be a resident of the region or an Australian Citizen.

The person you want to be in the running for an award may have been contributing to the community for many years, or may be new to dedicating their time, it makes no difference, if they deserve it, nominate them!

All the details can be found on Council’s website. Go to www.moretonbay.qld.gov. au and search ‘Australia Day Awards’. Nominations close 30 October 2023.

FRIDAY AT THE SCHUB

BOOKS, BIBS AND BURPERS FOR BUBS

Christmas is coming and already the wonderful elves from Crafting Kindness and Charity Craft Creators are creating magic to go in Christmas surprise bags for the mums and bubs at Caboolture and Redcliffe maternity units. The CCC have made beautiful stuffed toys, bibs and burpers, while CK are madly collecting good quality children’s books, crochet cotton for tote bags, and any little helpful things new mums might need, as well as crocheting or knitting bags.

CAN YOU HELP?

If you are crafty and would like to help, you can sew bibs and burpers at home, make bunny rugs, either sew, crochet or knit tote bags about 30cm wide and 40cm long. It’s amazing what can be created watching TV, or over tea/coffee and chats. If you would like to join us on a Friday afternoon, we would love to welcome you.

If you have any good quality children’s picture books, crochet cotton or children’s material that you could donate, that would help us tremendously.

On Friday 29 September after Coffee and a Chat at 2pm, the Good Stuff Ideas Forum is discussing Doing Good at 3ish. Knitters and crocheters can talk as they create wonders.

On Friday 6 October at noon, Samford Scribblers meet, followed by beginning preparations for Christmas on Main Street at 2ish along with our Cuppa and Chat.

On Friday 13 October at 2ish, Crafting Kindness is continuing our Christmas craft preparation.

On Friday 29 October, we will have Cuppa and a Chat at 2ish followed Chair Yoga with Ruth Campell who gives her time. Each Friday we ask participants to donate $2 to cover tea, coffee and hall costs.

Tiger Lawson Award: 3 J King, 2 D Shaw, 1 J Jennings.

A former Chronicle Cup umpire of many years once joked that ‘all Mongrels captains end up broken men’. Any unfortunate soul who has been at the helm knows that the quantity of a Mongrels team cannot be reliably judged down at the pub at 11:30 on a Saturday night – 18 loud, over-confident players can quickly turn into eight or nine (or less!) by the time Sunday morning comes around.

With the unfamiliar luxury of a drinks carrier and the realisation that Dayboro had resorted to using children to fill their ranks, the Mongrels were liking their chances. With ball in hand, the fiery Charlie Geddes from Dayboro conceded just four runs off the bat in his five over spell. Jack McCulloch backed him up beautifully with figures of 4/16 off four. Formerly a bowling all-rounder, Darren Shaw (51*, 1/9) in response defied categorisation, as he again used controlled aggression with the bat to notch up yet another 50.

In a corpse-with-pads-like innings, Rob Cairns (26 off numerous deliveries) complemented Shaw’s innings perfectly, dulling the impact of Dayboro’s pacemen with his tight defence. Cairns was in full control in sheet-anchor mode until the very young Laura Topp stepped up to the bowling crease. Doing ‘a job’ for her captain, Topp (0/7 off three) gave the ball so much flight that it sometimes came down with raindrops. Cairns had time to think

of three possible shots per delivery, and usually chose a combination of them all. To the amusement of his teammates, the harder he tried to hit it, the more bamboozled he became.

You may also want to keep an eye out for the even younger bowler, Jackson Jennings (4/14 off four) who took matters into his own hands, smashing the stumps of the majority of the Mongrels’ tail. Although ultimately denied his hat-trick, the ball he bowled when he created the opportunity deserved one.

Chasing 177, Geddes kept contributing to his team with a decisive 40 runs. The younger players from the Dayboro team, however, may have allowed their focus to be momentarily hijacked by things even more interesting than the life and death run chase that confronted them. Consequently, partnerships were few and far between, if not non-existent. Veteran Mongrel allrounder James King (39 & 3/12 off five) showed no mercy.

Finally, the tail began to wag. Ben Winn hit a massive six deep into the trees. The injured Dayboro captain is always working to a plan. With his wicket still alive, Mongrel complacency was not an option. Too much damage had been sustained earlier, though, and the Dayboro batsmen fell well short.

WE HAVE LIFT-OFF

Commuters could be catching a taxi in the sky from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane by 2030, if a new student project goes to plan.

Experts, industry leaders, high school and university students have joined forces at the University of the Sunshine Coast, to take their ideas for an electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle (eVTOL) sky high. The goal: To have it flying for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Aeronautical engineer and UniSC Special Projects Lead Tim Kelly said similar concepts were already being developed around the world, but this design featured a new approach to vertical take-off and landing.

“The concept leverages some well-understood existing platforms, and in simplified terms can be thought of as a combination between a very large quadcopter drone and a canard configuration general aviation aircraft,” Mr Kelly said.

“What sets it apart from other vehicles is that it doesn’t involve either tilt wings or rotors, nor does it carry redundant propulsion systems to transition from vertical to horizontal flight. Instead, the

passenger is safely secured in a type of reclining chair so that they’re sitting normally through their entire flight. You would summon a ride to your nearest VTOL port and it would fly you to your destination at around 250 kilometres per hour. That’s quick enough to get from Maroochydore CBD to Brisbane CBD in under 30 minutes,” he said.

“Ironically the technical aspects aren’t as difficult as the regulatory and social acceptance aspects because we’re all used to the standard aircraft configuration for personal transport,” he said.

UniSC Engineering Discipline Lead Dr Adrian McCallum said the project was a learning opportunity for students across multiple fields, but it also offered a pipeline of engaged students the chance to network with established companies in everything from aerospace to software engineering.

“This isn’t a straight engineering project. We are building an engineering organisation from scratch, and all the networks, skill transfer and collaboration that comes with it,” Dr McCallum said.

While the vehicle will initially be remotely piloted, the plan is to make it completely autonomous, with smaller models offering potential for surveillance, freight or firefighting.

Mr Kelly says autopilot systems for aircraft are simpler, more mature, and technologically established than they are for cars, which are complicated by human interaction, pedestrians and intersections.

Program collaborator Tim Hall, from local manufacturing company Greaseboss, is keen to be involved to help grow their business over the coming years.

“The skills that these students will learn through this team will be directly applicable to our business,” Mr Hall said.

Don’t know about you, but I am super excited for this development. (Editor)

THE FUTURE

VOLUNTEERS AND CLIENTS MEET AND GREET

Recently, volunteers and clients of Samford Support Network joined together at the Samford Rangers Soccer Club for a Meet and Greet Morning Tea. Because of the nature of the Samford Support Network and how we operate, not every volunteer or client has had the chance to meet each other.

supplied the catering of hot and cold food and the morning tea was greatly enjoyed by everyone who attended. The SSN would like to say a huge thank you to the Samford Rangers Soccer Club for allowing us to use their great facility. It was a lovely venue and appreciated by all.

hire our hall and give us catering jobs so we can give back a considerable amount immediately to our local Samford and surrounding communities. Your enormous support is appreciated.

We learn to do this well by going to conferences and some of us attended our Division Conference at Pine Rivers Showgrounds recently. (pictured) It was enlightening - the food was great too. We support each other happily through social events and many are coming up.

The SSN Management Committee thought it would be a great idea for everyone to have the opportunity to chat to each other in an informal atmosphere and to meet some new people.

Community is what we’re all about. Our motto is to take particular care of women and children and this ethos is reflected in our monetary help to local places who support women - their health, their needs and their families. We support them by raising money through our catering, our baking stall at the Samford Show our raffles and our Christmas on Main Street Stall coming up. Thank you to our local community who always buy,

Summer is coming and we are organising our own Fire Emergency Kits after our next meeting. We also have a Suggestion Box to add ideas from members which we are looking forward to reading.

Special thank you to our President Fiona who entertained us well, sharing her photos of Egypt and Jordan.

QCWA Samford Branch caters for small to medium group functions and other special occasions. Please contact Fiona on 0421 353 272.

We hire our air-conditioned CWA Hall in Main Street Samford. Give Lilah a call on 0421 709 723.

PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES PULL ONE TONNE TRAM

In an inspiring showcase of strength and unity, a group of participants with disabilities from Claire’s Cottage in Ferny Hills, along with their support workers, took on a monumental challenge for the second year – pulling a one-tonne tram up a 50m incline – in Brisbane’s Great Tram Pull event on Sunday 24th September. The event is not only challenging, but is also testament to the human spirit, as the Claire’s Cottage team raced against 15 other “able bodied” crews, including power-lifters, cross-fitters, and those from other local running and sporting clubs.

At the heart of this event for the Claire’s Cottage participants, is the celebration of inclusivity and empowerment. Breaking down stereotypes surrounding disabilities and proving that individuals with diverse abilities are more than capable of taking on extraordinary challenges, is what they do. This event was not just about physical strength, although the team includes Special Olympians in gymnastics, weightlifters and competitive swimmers. It was about pushing boundaries and proving that individuals with disabilities are limitless in their potential in the hope of inspiring others to believe in themselves and support inclusivity. Spectators and supporters from all over Brisbane are expected to come and witness this incredible display of strength.

Two teams took up the ropes at 4pm at the Brisbane Tramway Museum in Ferny Grove, pulling a replica 1890’s Brisbane one-tonne tram up a 50 metre incline – and they smashed last year’s effort, finishing in 18 seconds. What a fantastic effort!
