1 WOMAN, 5 CAMELS AND A 5000KM TREK

Sophie Matterson from Highvale has just completed a 5,000km solo trek across Australia from West Coast to East Coast with 5 camels which she caught and trained from the wild. Sophie, a former Samford Steiner School pupil and one time member of Samford Golden Valley Pony Club, trained as a photographer and film maker. She spent four years learning all about camels both in Australia and overseas, before deciding to embark on her adventure, training camels, Jude, Delilah, Clayton, Charlie and Mac, and making the camel saddles, while working at Uluru Camel Tours. In March 2020, 33 year old Sophie trucked the camels from Uluru to Shark Bay in Western Australia - in itself a 5 day adventure - commencing the trek on 1 April 2020 just as Covid set in. Sophie and her young and inexperienced camels were confronted with very hot and dry conditions. Sophie carried about 600kg of gear including water for herself and the camels, a month’s supply of food for her, swag, rifles, medicines and other survival gear, all of which had to be loaded and unloaded from the camels every day so they could be set free to feed. Early in the trip, disaster almost struck when the camels spooked and took off, running several kilometers carrying all of Sophie’s gear, including essential survival kit of satellite phone, EPIRB beacon and water. As luck would have it, the camels were pulled up when their ropes became

entangled in mulga bushes and Sophie was able to recapture them. A lesson learnt; from then on, she always carried her survival kit. The most challenging section of the trek was the 1,400 kms from Laverton to Coober Pedy, following the Anne Beadell Highway which is nothing more than a grader track through the Great Victoria Desert.

With only one roadhouse along the track and up to 20 days walk between water points, she arrived at Mount Clarence Station north of Coober Pedy in October 2020. Sophie decided to split the trek into two halves, resting the camels over the summer months when it is too hot to walk through Central Australia. The camels were trucked

to Beltana Station in the Flinders Ranges for summer agistment, and then returned to Mount Clarence in May 2021 having gained condition from rest and good feed. From Coober Pedy, Sophie walked to William Creek, then around the bottom of Lake Eyre on The Oodnadatta Track, then up the Strezleki Track to Cameron’s Corner and entry into Queensland. From here she followed the dog fence that runs along the QLD/NSW border, continuing to Hungerford, Hebel, Texas and Stanthorpe, before crossing into NSW, trekking over the Great Dividing Range and finishing on the beach at Byron Bay on 10 December 2021. Daily distances travelled varied greatly, depended upon feed for the camels and good campsites, with the maximum distance being about 28kms. Luck was with Sophie in that every time she needed to cross a State border, it was open in the direction she wanted to cross. Throughout the trip, Sophie was shown tremendous hospitality and help from the people of outback Australia making friends along the way. The journey completed without injury to camels or herself, and with the camels safely back in South Australia, Sophie plans to write a book and maybe make a documentary. There are also rumours that one of the camels may be trained to race, Sophie having won the Alice Springs Camel Cup in 2019 as a jockey! A remarkable achievement.

The Samford Avenue of Honour Association is proud to announce the construction of a War Animal Memorial located at the Samford Avenue of Honour. Construction will commence in mid January 2022. All going well, it will be opened and dedicated on 24 February 2022. The project is the construction of a stone monument that depicts and characterises the role played by animals in Australian wars commencing with World War 1(WW1) up to the present day. The monument will highlight the actual roles performed by these animals, the bonds that existed between the animal and their handlers and more broadly the values of love, loyalty and duty, which are part of the military ethos and the larger community. The monument will depict the five animals recognised by the Australian War Memorial - the Donkey/Mule, Camel, Pigeon, Horse and Dog - and will facilitate visitors understanding of the project and the underpinning values mentioned above. During construction we ask for your patience and caution. A safety fence will be erected around the construction site, which is opposite the major memorial. We look forward to welcoming you at the opening.

LOCAL NEWS FUTURE SAMFORDIANS Prospects are looking bright for futureSamford if the aspirations of a new local generation is anything to go by. Last year saw 20 four and five-year-olds from the Samford Pines Early Learning Centre graduate from Kindy, and while there were tears (the parents’) and smeared cupcake icing on faces (also the parents’), this was a chance for these little voices to be heard as they detailed what they wanted to be when they grew up. Inspirational women were a key point of motivation in these little ones’ lives, with a future teacher and pilot in the mix, following in the footsteps of some inspiring mums. Keeping the arts sector alive, two ballerinas emerged in the cohort. Regional development works will be covered thanks to a future builder, and council services have a future garbage truck driver ready to take the wheel. Ensuring everything stays on track for the greater good, it was a tough decision for one child between becoming a policeman or principal, but either way, they will undoubtably keep Samford 2.0 running smoothly. Some goals were more in the moment, with one child keen to slide down a slide ten times at school. This ultimate goal of enjoying life is not to be underestimated. Under the patient guidance of Lead Educator Melissa White and Assistant Educator Ayako Masuda, the group’s rendition of musical acts on stage exhibited a generation that were growing in confidence, and keen to embrace new challenges that life may throw their way. Local Kindy programs such as the one offered by the

Samford Pines Early Learning Centre use an Early Years Learning Framework to provide the groundwork for our future generations. “The first six years set the foundation of for children’s approach to life. This is due to the fact that brain development is prolific at this time and sets the trajectory for how children approach learning in the future,” Samford Pines licensees, Jacqui and Ken McDonald said. “Neuroscience research confirms a very high growth in synaptic connections at this time requiring lots of energy, calm and sleep,” they said. “Staff at Samford Pines focus on early learning for wellbeing, knowing that this is the foundation for future learning and approaches to life challenges. Together with physical dress-ups and social role-play, children practise mental dress-ups. This is where they are able to put themselves in the shoes of others such as mum and dad, and are guided by their own curiosity from the world around them.” With each little person playing to their unique strengths, the future of Samford looks to be in solid, jam-streaked hands. LOCAL NEWS Samford Support Network Working together to help local community members

ANNOUNCEMENT: The SSN and the COVID-19 Vaccination Status of our Members and Clients. Dear SSN members, clients and the broader community of the Samford and surrounds. This announcement is in response to a number of questions that have been received by the SSN Management Committee (SSN MC) in relation to its approach to the COVID Vaccination status of Clients and Members. The Samford Support Network (SSN) provide a range of services to local community members (our Clients), frequently necessitating breaching of the 1.5m social distancing recommendation. The SSN COVID-19 Safety Plan is designed to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 through the use of masks, disinfecting and cleaning in accordance with the relevant Public Health Directives and Government guidelines.

Many of our SSN Clients and Members could be considered vulnerable from a health perspective, particularly in relation to COVID-19 and the Omicron variant. In the absence of a mandated policy from Queensland Health addressing the SSN environments, the SSN MC have considered a risk-based approach which identified the potential harm to our Members and Clients, and the reputational risk to SSN as being the most critical. The SSN MC have developed the following recommendations to be followed in conjunction with the SSN COVID-19 Safety Plan to reduce the risks: (a) The SSN are not advocating the checking of COVID vaccination status of Clients or Members. The SSN relies on its Members and Clients to follow mandated Public Health Directives and good cleanliness practices. It is the decision of each individual whether they choose to have contact with another person, regardless of their vaccination status. This is no different to going to any other setting that isn’t designated as a mandatory double vaccinated environment. (b) The SSN does not require proof of vaccination status as a requirement for any SSN activity (unless the then current Public Health Directives or other Government Guidelines indicate otherwise). (c) The SSN relies on the honesty and behaviour of its members and clients to minimise the exposure of COVID-19 amongst clients and members. (d) Should the SSN organise events that include clients or members visiting restricted premises where double vaccinated status is required (for example, a coffee shop), we request they follow the current Public Health Directives in place. It will be the responsibility of each individual to comply with mandated Public Health Directives. (e) The MC recommend that all SSN members are at least double vaccinated, particularly those with direct contact with clients. (f ) Should any client or member have concerns about their individual vulnerability to COVID-19, please advise the SSN immediately to allow the SSN an opportunity to meet your needs to reduce the infection risk. Whilst the SSN make the best efforts to protect its members and clients, the SSN does not accept liability for any transmission of COVID-19 to, from or between members and clients. Division 11 Council Report Get your party shoes on Preparations are well underway for the comeback of a great night of music, food, good company and hopefully a sky full of stars when Samford once again is host to Music Under the Stars on Saturday, 12 February at the Samford Showgrounds. The event was really missed last year, and whilst this year is off to another complicated start, we will hopefully see things settle down in time for everyone to enjoy a great line up of artists, artisan markets and activities for young and old to enjoy. If you are a Fleetwood Mac fan then don’t miss the headline act, Rumours the Australian Fleetwood Mac Experience, who will perform all your favourites, along with a change of pace from indie-reggae rock band Lucid Safari, acoustic artist Amy Kate and the Angel Strings Quartet. There will be something for everyone and I look forward to the community being able to support local businesses once again with the night markets which are always popular. The great team from the Samford Show Society will be running a bar for the evening, so bring along your gold coin donation for entry to the event and enjoy a night of fun. Road Resurfacing Works Back into the swing of things for a new year with some upcoming road resurfacing works in Kareela Drive, Highvale and Jancy Court, Samford Valley. Works to the entire street at both of these locations are due to commence in early February, weather permitting, and are expected to take around 1 week to complete. Every effort will be taken to minimise disruptions to residents in the street, but please work with the crews on site and take note of any changed traffic conditions to keep everyone safe. Residents will receive a project notice outlining works to be carried out. If you have any issues while these works are being carried out, you can contact Council’s Technical Officers in charge of the project by calling 3205 0555, call my office on 3480 6455 or email Darren.grimwade@ moretonbay.qld.gov.au. LOCAL NEWS Samford Museum ANNOUNCEMENT: Australia Day celebrations planned for 26th January 2022 in Samford Museum grounds have been cancelled due to the covid situation.

IRONBARK BRIDGE PILE Saving a valuable piece of our local heritage has been possible thanks to the observant eye of David Bannerman, members Geoff Harris’ and Irwin Draper’s negotiations with green bridge contractors and Council, and local fencing contractor Clint Greensill. Construction of the green bridge, referred to as Private Percy Cash Pedestrian Bridge on Council’s website, adjacent to Pte Percy Cash Bridge, has revealed historical evidence of the first bridge constructed across the South Pine River at this location. (This is not the railway bridge that locals walked during flood times for supplies from Samford. This was further upstream.) 1936 Pine Rivers Shire Council minutes show a Treasury approved loan and subsidy under Commonwealth and State grant scheme for four river and creek crossings including ‘construction of a bridge and approaches over the S P River near Samford’. At the October 1937 Council meeting, engineer Mr J Wilson reported the estimated cost of a bridge over the SP River at Samford was 3,400 pounds. In Dec 1937 Council called tenders for the construction of a bridge over S P River at Samford. The Jan 1938 meeting recommended that Mr Cronin’s tender, which was under the estimate, be accepted. By mid-March 1938 construction had commenced on two bridges at ‘The Junction’ Pine River. (The Junction of Samford Creek and South Pine River is upstream from the bridge site) Two bridges? The second bridge was over the gully in now closed end of Dundiallar Way which was the only road before the c1980s major work on this section of Mt Samson Road. “Bill Allen built the bridge. Messers Lenehan and Bob Lawson were employed as bridge builders. Mr Cronin did the approaches. He employed Arthur McDowall and his horses and Cecil Patrick drove Alex Lawson’s horses to do the roadwork. Cecil Beiers also worked there. Ironbark logs from Draper’s property were used for the piles, wall logs and stringers. Arthur Raynbird transported the logs. Walter Broad

dressed the logs with a board axe.” From Siggers family recollections: “The bridge over the S P River was being constructed by a contractor named Tom Cronin. My understanding of the story was that Tom fell into financial difficulties and had to give up the bridge contract. This was taken up subsequently by another contractor, Lawrence Stanley Frost and his team. My father obtained employment with them. He had an ancient Brockway truck which he used to drive the piles for the new bridge. Somehow, they rigged the vehicle to act as a winch to raise and drop the ‘monkey’ which drove the wooden pile into the river bed. I understand Bob Lenehan was the actual bridge builder.” “When the bridge over the S P River was being built in the late 1930s the Zimmerman boys used to sit on the girders and chat to the workers.” The date of October 15 had been set for the opening. A committee consisting of Councillors and local identities was set up in mid Sept to carry out opening ceremony arrangements. Cr. Smith said the Pine Shire Council had agreed to the request of the Samford Tennis Club to hold a carnival on the bridge at night after the official opening.

said the fine bridges in the Pine Shire had been made possible by State and Federal grants, subsidies, and loans at reasonable interest repayable over 10 years. One bridge comprises seven 30ft. spans, 12ft. wide between kerbs and 3ft 6in above flood level. The other, which is close to the first, has three 25ft spans of the same width, and crosses low-lying land. The road approaches are 1700ft. long. At the final meeting of the Samford Bridge Committee, the Treasurer (Mr. G. S. Douglas) presented the balance sheet which showed donations amounting to £24/5/6. and expenses £23/15/9. The larger bridge was replaced by the current Pte Percy Cash Bridge in March 1986. Sources: Samford Museum’s collection, Trove newspapers.

BRIDGES OPENED NEAR SAMFORD The twin bridges over the South Pine River near Samford were officially opened by the chairman of the Pine Shire Council (Councillor W. J. Smith) in the absence of the Treasurer (Mr.Cooper) at the defence conference. Crs. R. Morrison. F. W. Salisbury, F. Long. J. Bradly, R. Krause, O. Ebbott, (L Ebert?) and J. Fogg assisted. The ribbon was held by Mesdames A. Lawson and P. Broad and was cut by Mrs. W. J. Smith. Cr. Smith THE VILLAGE PUMP 21 January 2022– Page 5

OPINION PIECE Australia Day – What does history say it’s all about? Australia Day attracts a growing debate about what it signifies, to whom, and why we celebrate it. Opinions do not divide neatly along politically partisan lines, nor by age, gender, country/city or any other factor. It is unlike India’s Foundation Day, the 4th of July in the US or Bastille Day in France, celebrating momentous national events. But for Indigenous Australians and for many others celebrating January 26 has other meanings, or none at all. When a motley crew of exiled convicts and soldiers fetched up on the shores of Botany Bay in January 1788, they followed Asian traders and European adventurers who had visited the continent for centuries. Although no doubt glad to get off the boats after months at sea, the arrivals didn’t particularly want to be there, or later in Moreton Bay or Van Diemen’s Land. The early years of the colonies saw near starvation, lonely desperation and growing brutality between them and the indigenous peoples resisting the usurpation of the land they had occupied for 65,000 years. The arrivals had no grand plan to build a nation or an Empire in the great south land, except perhaps to see that the French and later the Americans, or the Russians, or the Japanese, didn’t beat them to it. It took a generation for the local born – the “currency” lads and lasses – to develop a sense of Australianness. Until well into the

20th century many Australians believed they were just an Imperial appendage of Britain. Some still do. In the 1840s, WC Wentworth and a small band of prominent colonists began to ponder what it meant to be an Australian, partly to distinguish themselves from those born in Britain and/or convict descendants, partly to seek self-government, and partly so they could form a local landed aristocracy – an idea laughed off as the “Bunyip Aristocracy” - to grab control of the vast interior of the continent for their sheep and cattle. The arrival of democratically minded gold seekers from the 1850s onwards joined with the currency folk to put an end to such pretensions. This period could arguably be marked by a Eureka Day to signify Australian democratic traditions.

Until the end of the 19th century the notion of being an Australian was largely the province of poets, writers, artists and politicians who cottoned on to a growing patriotic sentiment, still heavily conditioned by British racial Imperialism. Tangible moves towards national unity began with

Saturday 12 February • 4pm to 8pm Samford Showgrounds

Henry Parkes’ oration in Tenterfield in 1889. Constitutional conferences that followed overcame colonial governments’ parochial squabbling in a hesitant move towards Federation. Australia Day is a relatively recent invention, only gazetted as a public holiday in 1994. It was first proposed in the 1930s to differentiate the nation as a whole from the various State “days”. Queensland Day, for example, recognises separation from NSW in 1859, not the arrival in 1824 of another motley band of convicts and soldiers at Moreton Bay. No State day seems to generate much fervour about what it means to be born in Queensland or New South Wales, for example. State of Origin day might be a better substitute. Viewed historically, it is reasonable to say 26 January 1788 was one of many steps in the evolution of a vibrant, successful, generally egalitarian and multicultural Australia, the envy of the old world. On the other hand, it is also historically true that it started a savage, intermittent frontier conflict that still echoes. Again historically, it may have little relevance to arrivals from other lands and cultures since 1945, greatly outnumbering the descendants of the early European settlers. These issues ignite the current debate. Anzac Day arguably means more as a national day for many Australians. So where does Australia Day on January 26 really fit in a broader context? From an historical perspective, 1 January 1901 signifies when Australia became Australia, when being an Australian citizen meant something. What happened before and after fills out the picture of where we all came from, who we now are and what we hope to become. A contemporary song includes that powerful phrase we are one, but we are many. Perhaps it is time for a rational conversation about recognition of Foundation Day on 1 January, retaining the last long weekend of January (regardless of the actual dates on which it falls) to celebrate our oneness and our diversity – and the simple but profound symbolism of our freedom to go to the beach and play cricket - but without the ambivalent historical legacy of 1788. Janet was one of those special ladies that was never backward in taking on a role. Ladies Vice President, Ladies President. Janet played her bowls like all other aspects in her life, with skill and a desire to be the best she could. Everyone enjoyed Janet’s company as she was one of those kind and caring personalities that always had something nice to say. She will be missed and fondly remembered by us all.

Successful Region Gathering at the SCHUB Happy New Year to all our readers. Thanks to the recent good rain, the next few weeks should be a great time to plant some additional native plants on your property (but avoid planting if an imminent heatwave is forecast). On 4 December, Samford Branch hosted the quarterly meeting/Xmas break up for Native Plants Queensland Region at the Samford Community Hub, with NPQ members coming from as far afield as the Gold Coast, Blackbutt, Redlands and Logan. The first presentation by Peter Storer was on the SDPPA’s Samford Eco-Corridor project, including site history, future plans, threatened species, community engagement, citizen science projects and models for landholder revegetation. This was followed by a talk on the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine corridor program by Richard Bull of the RBCN. After lunch, Peter led a guided tour of the Eco-Corridor (which is a major hub in the northside Birdwing Vine corridor) to show how the riparian rainforest has developed since the initial planting in 2014 and to explore the grassy eucalypt woodland, which was planted on the adjacent, drier hillside in 2018. Thanks to everyone who helped with setting up, catering, the displays and packing up. It was a very successful day.

Page 10 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 21 January 2022

At our monthly meeting in December, Peter Storer introduced a wide range of native flowers that attract beneficial insects, including pollinators, (such as the >2000 species of Australian native bees) and predators of pests (such as green lacewings, which eat aphids). Highly recommended plants included Samford Holly (Graptophyllum spinigerum) Pavetta (P. australiensis) and Pink Lime Berry (Micromelum minutum). We don’t hold a meeting in January and it is with regret that we announce the cancellation of our February meeting owing to the dire Covid outlook for the next few weeks. We hope to be back in the CWA Hall for our AGM in March. Finally, an early ‘date claimer’: the Autumn Plants Sale will be held in the pavilion at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 2 April. This is a great opportunity to buy bargain plants to suit any situation and to talk to experts about your native plant needs. We hope the Samford community will support this event, which has returned to the Showgrounds for a second year. Peter Storer

SAMFORD HEALTH AND WELLBEING SUPPORT A Late Start As we face what we optimistically hope is the last major Covid challenge with this six-week pseudo lockdown, we are planning to start our program for the year on Friday 25th February, with the Good Stuff Ideas Forum with Jenni. We will serve up our usual cuppa and chat at 2.00pm, followed by the Forum at 3.30pm. Kim who runs the community support group for people who have experienced anxiety and depression will start Don’t Ever Think All is Lost (DETAIL) on March 11. If we all wear medical masks to minimize the spread of airborne nasties, make sure we sanitize our hands often, enjoy the beautiful views from the SCHUB verandah rather than sit inside, and keep our social distance, we should be able to enjoy each other’s company again each Friday from 25th February. Lovely Kim is trying to set up a Facebook page so that we can all support each other through this time of sort-of-forced isolation. Keep an eye out for more information on Facebook and here. If you need to talk or write to someone, please use these contacts: message Kim through the Facebook page Don’t Ever Think All Is Lost, message Alice through the Facebook page Samford Health And Wellbeing Support, or ring 0408 772 102. Keep healthy and safe.

Rotary Club of Samford Valley PROSTATE CANCER Is it Secret Mens Business? Rotary Club of Samford Valley will welcome guest speaker Distinguished Professor Judith Clements to their meeting on Tuesday 8th February at Samford Bowls Club. (see advertisement below for further details) In the past, prostate cancer has often been deemed ‘secret men’s business’, however the Rotary Club of Samford Valley want to see that change. We know that the occurrence of Prostate Cancer in men ranks equal to breast cancer in women; we also know that more than 18,000 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, and more than 3,300 tragically die from the disease. It’s the most commonly diagnosed and second biggest cancer killer among Australian men, after lung cancer. This doesn’t need to be the case. Awareness of the symptoms and early treatment has meant that there are now 230,000 men in Australia living post diagnosis and 95% have a five-year survival rate. Greater awareness is needed as currently 15% of men diagnosed have stage III or IV prostate cancer. PSA blood tests can help detect prostate cancers early – it’s vital that men with a family history of breast, ovarian, or prostate cancers discuss their risks with a GP and start PSA testing from an earlier age. This is an age-dependent disease, which means the chance of developing prostate cancer generally increases with age. Distinguished Professor Judith Clements is internationally recognised as an expert in her field, is Principal Research Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council and leads the Cancer Program at

the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. She is also Scientific Director of the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre. Don’t miss this opportunity to attend the Samford Valley Rotary Club meeting. RSVP: Gary Bray at garybray68@gmail. com or mobile 0455 993 352 (places strictly limited). Samford Area Mens Shed Well! What a year that was! The year 2021 had its moments. Queensland went from being one of the States with the least number of Covid infections to numbers that have risen beyond belief – and it’s only January! Still: it’s always good to look at the shiny side of the coin. Australians in general, and particularly Queenslanders, are a stoic mob. When the road looks rough and it doesn’t seem to have a smooth surface up ahead, we are famous for sticking together, supporting one another in the faith and hope that things will not always stay this way. Such is the case with the men of Samford Area Men’s Shed – also known as SAMS. The men at SAMS can look back fondly at the many successes and achievements that they enjoyed in 2021 – and look forward to an equally successful 2022 through careful planning and ongoing support, friendship and fellowship with each other. There are meetings to be had and a new leadership team to be elected at the Annual General

Meeting. During the year, the men will get their hands dirty, dusty and busy as they pursue future projects that are in the pipeline and projects from last year that need to be completed. Some things will have to be done differently to keep the men safe and healthy, but at the end of the day, the men will be there, standing shoulder to shoulder as they set about making the Shed a safe and enjoyable place to be. Men of Samford and surrounds, why not come along and see what SAMS is all about. We’re at the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. Find out more at samfordshed.org. au or email info@samfordshed.org.au

“The Woodies”

Letter to the Editor The CEO of Moreton Bay Regional Council Mr Greg Chemello wrote to impacted residents residing adjacent to the Ranger Soccer Club fields on 17 December. In his letter he addressed the ongoing concerns that had been expressed by many residents about the noise and lighting breaches committed by the club. He went on to advise that the Samford Sporting Association has been issued with a “warning of compliance notice in accordance with section 164 of the Planning Act 2016”. He further states the association has been advised that it is required to ensure its compliance with its obligations under the development approval and that contravention of a development approval is an offence. The impacted residents wish to thank Council for this action which hopefully will ensure the club can operate without any further adverse impact to the adjacent residents. Adam Foster

OUT & ABOUT Happy New Year from the EcoCorridor team. We have carried out two monthly bird surveys since our last Village Pump article. On 24 November, our birders recorded 67 species on a fine, but humid, early morning walk. Pigeons seem to be on the move, with Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove calling from revegetation zone P2, Pacific Emerald Dove calling near the waterhole and Topknot Pigeons flying overhead. The undoubted highlight was seeing a pair of Bush Stone-curlews nesting along the fence line below the Bowls Club, which is a new bird for the site and brings our cumulative total to 150 species since 2012. On the hot sunny morning of 18 December, our birders recorded 63 species. One of the first calls heard was Pale-vented Bush-hen somewhere along the river bank towards the new bridge and there were good numbers of small birds in the revegetated areas near the picnic site. Full details: https://ebird.org/australia/hotspot/ L5616101. Before Christmas, the Macadamia Trust kindly donated 18 advanced Macadamia integrifolia trees and one M. ternifolia to be planted in revegetation projects in Samford valley. The M. integrifolia trees were propagated from cuttings from a specimen collected from Smalls Road, Wights Mountain as part of The National Macadamia Germplasm Conservation Project in 2003. The M. ternifolia tree is from a specimen collected at Mt Nebo. We will plant a few Macadamias at the EcoCorridor (including by the picnic site), a couple at the Landcare project at Cash Avenue, Samford and the others will be placed in various parks/reserves under the guidance of the MBRC bushcare team. These trees will help conserve the genes of the macadamia population that used to be much more widespread in the Samford Valley. Early on Sunday 9 January, some of our regular volunteers spent a couple of hours weeding our new river bank planting below the southern end of revegetating zone P1. In just a few weeks, the Guinea Grass in particular had grown much taller than our young trees and shrubs, so the bamboo stick markers proved invaluable for locating our plants. We bagged the prolific Madeira Vine for removal to landfill, but the other weeds were left in piles on site to rot down (we had caught them before they had run to seed). We also lopped the edge of our plantings and along the Eco-Trail to ensure

the Council slasher has good access. In the moist conditions, fungi were popping up everywhere including the delicate white ‘mushrooms’ photographed on the river bank.

Our local contractor Bushtekniq will return to the site in mid-January to continue this weeding work and to sweep through our revegetation zones. We may not need another volunteer working bee this summer but will keep everyone posted. Covid-permitting, we still hope to carry out summer surveys of frogs and spiders with community participation. For further information, contact us on ecocorridor@gmail.com or follow our Facebook page. The Eco-Corridor team

Creative micro-business nails lockdown Corporate jobs and boho nails don’t usually go hand-in-hand, but local resident Imogen Smith is defying stereotypes and having fun along the way. Propelled by COVID-19 lockdowns and inspired by local vistas, Imogen began creating on a small scale and is shaping a successful online business to showcase her work. Imogen started designing nail wraps; intricately-designed nail stickers that would otherwise take hours to paint on individually. She then launched her own business from scratch called Nailed It. “Creating nail wraps would never have grown into a passion without lockdowns and a physical separation from my day job. I realised I wanted the flexibility of working from home, and wanted to start my own business,” Imogen said. While she is enjoying exploring the world of nail wraps, this was not necessarily the path Imogen foresaw for her future. “I was a bit of a tomboy growing up. I have three brothers and am into mountain biking,” she said. “I just wanted to do something different and creative and find a hobby that could be mine. I didn’t expect it to turn into a business at the start; I’ve learned a lot along the way.” To further her creative learning, Imogen found herself at a pattern making workshop

where she met other local artists who showcase their work at Makers on Main, the handmade collective on Samford’s Main Street. Community connections have proven to be important to Imogen’s fledgling endeavour. “After advertising on the local Facebook group, people were so kind and supportive of what I was doing. They would place orders online and I’d make local deliveries by riding my bike to their homes and putting the nail wraps into their letter boxes,” she said. Living among picturesque landscapes not only makes working from home easier, but also acts as a muse. “Inspiration for my designs comes from being here in the valley with all of the nature that we’re so lucky to be surrounded by, as well as from the incredible mountains

in the D’Aguilar range,” Imogen said. For anyone looking to monetise their own creative hobbies, Imogen is keen to pass on knowledge that she would have loved to know at the start of her journey. “I initially thought all the work would be in setting up the business, but the real work starts when you launch and start selling,” she said. “Also when I started, I thought I could hide behind the scenes, but you really need to be prepared to put yourself out there and be the face of your business. You need to be bold on social media; I’m slowly getting there!” “My last tip is that you have to keep having fun and remember that you’re a creator in the first place. Marketing can take up so much time but it’s important to keep making at the heart of what you do,” she said. Nailed It’s polished website is at: www. naileditco.com.au Tanya Hall

A GRAND YEAR FOR SINGING The Samford Community Singers look forward to another wonderful year of singing in 2022. Reflecting on last year - Thank you to everyone for coming to hear us sing in the RSL grounds as part of the Christmas on Main Street community event. Although our program was cut short by the storm, we enjoyed providing Christmas music for you and look forward to another great event this year. What a wonderful audience we had for our end of year concert held at the Farmers Hall. It was inspiring to have such a receptive audience to perform for. Our group has come such a long way in the last year under the guidance of our wonderful Musical Director Monica Haworth. The audience showed their appreciation for our eclectic musical program and for the talented soloists, Mike Furminger, Kathleen Cloughey and Monica herself. The afternoon tea provided was enjoyed by all and we are grateful for generous donations which will assist us to continue on our musical journey this year. Choir recommences Monday January 24th, 7pm at Farmers Hall. We would very much welcome new singers, especially men! Call Nettie on 0412 991 759 or just turn up. You will be warmly welcomed. Nettie

107 ARMY CADETS READY FOR 2022 Samford’s 107 Australian Army Cadet Unit (107 ACU) has been given the all clear to return to normal parading (so far) in 2022. Despite the impacts of COVID-19, 107 ACU has remained proactive throughout 2021. The unit has moved into the new Samford Hub facility which is a great location and facility to undertake training. Highlights of 2021 were Battalion and Unit camps, promotion courses, and Training days in Enoggera Army Base at the Range, and the obstacle course above the pool (harder than it looks). The unit finished the year with a dining-in night at Gaythorne RSL, where a formal dinner and awards were presented. The Australian Army Cadets is a leading national youth development program for young people aged 13-18 years, and seeks to promote pride in self, community and the nation. The Australian Army Cadets is an inclusive environment where youth can experience a wide variety of activities conducted in an Army-like environment. These range from traditional activities

like drill, navigation, living in the field and weapons familiarisation and safety, through to robotics and cyber-awareness. Army Cadets shares its values of service, courage, respect, integrity and excellence with the broader Defence organisation, and is founded on strong community partnerships, involving parents and community organisations. Samford’s 107 ACU parades from 6pm to 8:30pm every Monday, excluding holidays. If you are interested in joining, please come along to the open night on Monday February 7th, 6pm at the Samford Community Hub, Samford Parklands, 2204 Mount Samson Rd. 2022 has an action packed start, with ANZAC day and Bivs planned, so come and join the fun, learn skills and make new friends. If interested in joining, please contact the Officer Commanding by email: 107ACU@armycadets.gov.au. General information about the Australian Army Cadets can be found at: www. armycadets.gov.au. PILATES LIFESTYLE AND WELLBEING Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing opened its doors to 2022 on 10th January. There have been some changes to our studio which you will be able to view on both Facebook and the website. The Reformers and all Pilates equipment is now in a combined studio opening up the opportunity for us to offer a 45-minute Pilates Based Circuit Class. A Basic Mat Class is a wonderful way to start off the New Year, allowing the body to realign after all the festivities of the holiday season. Alignment of the bones of the body is vital to a good upright posture. Finding the muscles that can maintain the bone alignment can be achieved in a wellstructured Basic Mat Class. Once everyone is realigned and feeling stronger, we will introduce foam rollers to this class, which will add a far greater challenge to the core and stabilising muscles of the body. As always, the majority of our ongoing clients enjoy adding in the Reformer Classes which offer greater demand to the bigger muscles whilst still utilising stabilising muscles. We have added two 5am classes to our current timetable. You can view our timetable on our website www.pilateslifestyle.com.au If you find a class and time to suit your needs, please contact Dorothy on 0432 269 472 or book your class from the website. OUT & ABOUT This may be the distraction needed? WOW! What a great start to Tawny Trails, thanks so much for supporting this community project. If you didn’t make it to the first day you have not missed out, because there is so much fun on the Tawny Trails (and in case the not to be mentioned situation came up) we have two Launch Day Celebrations. Sunday 30 January is Launch Day Celebrations mark 2. So, you still have a chance to check out all the specials and demonstrations and get in on the prizes. Everyone gets a chance to win a piece

of artwork created on the day from one of our En Plein Air (paint on location) artists: Helen Evans & Anne-Louise Ciel will be located at the Gantry. Mike White & Majella Holton will be located at Ocean View Estates. There is an open invitation for anyone to join them on location to create some art on site. You don’t need experience to play. That goes for all our workshops and activities on Tawny Trails. Don’t forget that you need to book for workshops, horse riding and Yoga but the rest just rock up between 10am and 3pm and enjoy. Arts not your main joy? Creative people seek out new experiences, sensations and states of mind. How about a horse ride on top of a mountain with the Glass House Mountains as a backdrop? A location that brings up all kinds of inspiration. Perhaps a leisurely drive through the countryside, brows the masterfully crafted ceramics, a beautiful short walk at the Gantry, and maybe a divine lunch at Ocean View and bring home a local bottle of wine to top it off. Or maybe even try your mountain bike out on one of our local trails or a dip in Rocky Hole to finish the day off.

Making the most of this beautiful location where we live and get to know some of the creative people who live here. There is a connection between artistic exploration and happiness; see if you can be inspired by our artists and take a little happiness home with you. It may be the distraction you are looking for. www.tawnytrails.com This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. OUT & ABOUT

Samford Lions Club The Lion’s family and networking provided through this community continue to be excellent. As members leave and new members arrive, the friendship for likeminded is a natural bond. Each club offers a welcoming and instant support network into a new community from one club to another. Newcomers have an automatic friendship base that not only fills up the meetings with great heartfelt conversations but can help us put our lives into perspective. With downto-earth, positive people in our life, we are mindful of gratitude gained when doing nice things for others. Within Samford Lion’s club, we thrive on healthy friendships. My journey through Lion’s family at the Samford Lions Club was made extremely enjoyable with a fantastic couple, David and Kristin McKinnie (pictured). David, with his witty personality and a continuous stream of ‘dad jokes’ and Kristin, who was encouraging and welcoming to new members. Regrettably, the Samford Lion’s Club is farewelling these valued members to the vast waters of Hervey Bay. David and Kristin came to Samford Lions club from the Lions Club of Maleny-Blackall Range, and their experience within the

Lions community was keenly welcomed. They had an immediate group of friends keeping them happy on their Loins journey. For their time in the Samford Lions, they both not only have been Presidents, but have eagerly rolled up their sleeves, put on an apron and shook a tin to help raise valuable money for community projects. They will, of course, be looking forward to meeting new friends in Hervey Bay. If you are interested and would like to be involved and connected to your community, you would be welcomed at Samford Lions Club. Don’t wait to be asked; come along and make your presence known. We will always make you fit in to our gratifying community. Alison Kenny

HIDDEN PLAYGROUNDS Whether it’s birthday party time or a lovely catch up outdoors, finding a picnic table at John Scott Park may require some highly tactical planning. We take a look at some lesser-known playgrounds where you can lay out a table while watching the kids slide their woes away. Undambi Rotary Reserve Mt O’Reilly Road, Samford Valley Perhaps not so secret, the playground at Undambi Rotary Reserve is a small park that’s packed with features. Nestled away in Samford Valley, this park can get popular on the weekends, but even as rounds of ‘Happy Birthday’ are sung, there is usually still ample street parking available. With a list of features including an electric BBQ, toilets, rubbish bin, water bubbler and a half basketball court, it’s easy to see why this spot becomes a destination point for many. With an accessible creek running along the back of the park as well, kids end up having just as much fun down there as they do on the play equipment, which itself is not to be sneezed at.

A full climbing apparatus and slide are the first things most little ones gravitate to here, with a fully decorated play shop on the ground level for the smaller kids. A spiderweb swing attracts both toddlers and teenagers alike and it’s not even uncommon to see the odd parent drift off to sleep here. A few spring rockers rounds off the play equipment, and still there’s more to uncover. Around the playground is a concreted bike path including obstacles that are both easy and a little more on the challenging side. With a shade cloth covering the majority of play equipment, Undambi Rotary Reserve offers a good reason to step outdoors at any time of the day. Tanya Hall

KEEP HEALTHY METABOLIC BALANCE Modern life has much to offer but it also has a set of unique challenges, especially in the area of nutrition. There is so much information and misinformation about which food is good or not so good, that it is difficult for patients yet alone their clinicians to make sense of it all. Danielle Husband is a bachelor qualified clinical nutritionist and a certified Metabolic Balance®coach, who has recently successfully completed further training from Germany and in Brisbane. “I am thrilled to be able to bring the Metabolic Balance® program to Samford and surrounds. There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to promoting health and well-being, particularly with regard to diets, hormones and weight management. This is what makes this program so special,” says Danielle. “It’s easy to follow, individualised, yet an effective natural solution for people struggling with metabolic and hormone dysfunction such as diabetes, PCOS, weight issues, high blood pressure or heightened cholesterol, or those suffering with menopausal symptoms, she said. “It offers a permanent solution by

establishing the correct parameters for your unique biochemistry.” The program starts with a full health consultation and analysis of a simple blood sample for 35 essential blood parameters. Danielle then uses a specially designed food database from which foods are selected that are needed to rebalance your metabolism in accordance with your blood test results, medical history, any current on-going medical issues and food preferences. You then receive a four-phase individually tailored nutritional program, which includes menu plan and shopping list to provide

your body with precisely the foods and nutrients that it needs – just real whole food – no shakes, bars or pills. If you are struggling with weight loss or weight gain, cardiovascular issues, high blood pressure, or just feel your hormones are out of whack and would like to know more about this hormone and weight management program, or address any other health issues, give Danielle a call. BOOK REVIEWS SAFE HARBOUR Helene Young If you enjoy rural romantic crime fiction with dark undercurrents, then Safe Harbour might be the page t u r n e r yo u ’r e looking for. Award winning romance author Helene Yo u n g pulls together a gripping tale revolving around the illegal use of drugs in sport and the drive to provide job opportunities for the underprivileged. Newly escaped from an emotionally toxic relationship, Darcy Fletcher returns to her childhood home of Banksia Cove near Bundaberg, where, as part of a marine rescue team, she pulls devilishly handsome Tyrone from a wrecked yacht in a violent storm. Trouble is he’s lost his memory. As his connections are uncovered by Darcy’s childhood mate, Noah, the local police sergeant, a series of events occur which threaten everyone Darcy loves. A love triangle develops where Darcy’s physical attraction to Tyrone undermines her growing relationship with Noah. Some

BY JULIE MARTIN of the more over-the-top incidents are almost made believable by Noah’s down to earth approach to community policing. Despite his strong need to protect Darcy, he cannot leave a horror highway accident scene to rescue her. Duty must prevail. The complicated emotions of the characters and their backstories are gripping, but sometimes out of line with what most romance writers present. Woven into the story is Rosie, a compassionate Aboriginal elder who is a second mother to Darcy and many others in the community. Although there is a strong argument for each culture to maintain its own voice, it is good to see the contribution of an underrepresented minority in a community recognised in rural fiction. It is also good to see that much of the conversation among the women in the book does not revolve around men. The story is complicated, but so is life. It’s worth a read.

STORYTELLER: A Foreign Correspondent’s Memoir Zoe Daniel William Butler Yeats said, ‘Think like a wise man but communicate in the language of the people’. Zoe Daniels, the ABC’s fifteenth South East Asia Correspondent,

does that in her gripping memoir Storyteller. It not only shows her dedication to upholding the right of the people to be informed by the press on matters of public interest, even if it means personally confronting disasters like Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines or governments opposed to reporting of cataclysmic events like the unrest in Bangkok. Behind her brave advocacy for allowing the voice of the underdog to be heard, is her struggle to be a good mother and wife. She lays bare her distress at having to leave her anxious child who is aware of the danger she faces, to head to the front line of the next unpredictable, yet historic event. Zoe captures the heartbreaking pain of miscarrying in a toilet in an airport far from her loved ones yet having to keep going because that was her job, her responsibility. Her style’s simplicity depicts the awe of giving a card made by her young son to Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar, who also faced tough choices about motherhood, and her heart-warming response. It reveals her immense respect for her local “fixers”, the cameramen, her fellow journalists and the ordinary people, eyewitnesses to the extraordinary, who risked so much to be heard. Storyteller is one of those books you casually pick up to browse through over an afternoon cuppa and suddenly find it’s four in the morning, the book is finished, and you are planning a re-read soon.

LOCAL WALKING TRAILS CIRCUMNAVIGATING CAMP MOUNTAIN Watching a sunrise from the summit of a mountain is a top start to any day, and our local trail network provides the perfect spot to pause for a moment before you have to check your work emails. Camp Mountain offers a clear, accessible trail that takes people through established gum forests and clusters of grass trees up to an elevation higher than the clouds and where you can spot a view of the Brisbane city skyline. Parking at the juncture of McLean Rd South and Sutton Court will get you to the start gates. There are two close entries to the Camp Mountain trails that are about 70 metres apart. Entering via the gate closest to McLean Rd South will take you in an anti-clockwise direction, while opting for the gate along Sutton Court will set you off on a clockwise trek. We did a boot-test of hiking the mountain in both directions. While it took the same amount of time to circumnavigate the trails no matter which way

you headed off, there were still marked differences in the routes. Walking clockwise at a standard pace will get you to the summit in 45 minutes. The climb is long and steady, but extremely satisfying as you reach the top on your own two feet. Continuing on this trajectory, the descent is just 15 minutes back to the start point. Conversely, if you decide to head up anti-clockwise, it will take a bit over 15 minutes to reach the summit, however this is at a steeper angle than the clockwise track offers. Meandering down the long side again takes roughly 45 minutes, with some added pit stops to capture some

breathtaking photos. Classed as a moderate trail, this track has 270 metres of elevation gain which is comparable to the 275m elevation earned when traversing the well-known Mt Coottha loop. The track around Camp Mountain is straightforward, with only one other main trail that runs onto it. You’ll find this fork-inthe-road about 15 minutes in when walking clockwise. This other track is Link Road, which will eventually take you to Bellbird Grove or Enoggera Creek Reservoir if you foray down too far. It’s worth downloading a free trail maps app onto your smartphone (such as maps. me) to ensure your hour-long hike around a mountain stays in the one postcode. With no bubblers en route, it’s also worth carrying your own water bottle if needed. Without having to venture too far, the Camp Mountain trails provides a peak experience next time you decide to lace up the boots and head for the hills. Tanya Hall

Tiger Lawson Award: 3 Russell Mundy, 2 Justin gerber, 1 Paul Mellor. A sodden outfield, the threat of a storm and a sloppy bowling approach from the road end set the scene for the final of this season’s Chronicle Cup. Cowboys started slowly, Paul Mellor’s bowling controlling the pace until Ricky Neilsen swung so hard that he damaged a bicep, first points to Dayboro. Justin Gerber got them out of trouble as he had so often, but Dayboro were happy that the Cowboys were limited to 4 an over at first drinks. Then Russell Mundy came in to bat. He scored a couple of singles, then Paul Mellor gave him a half volley which he smashed. Paul had one choice only as the ball rocketed back to him, catch it or suffer damage. He triumphantly flung it in the Page 26 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 21 January 2022

air then grimaced as sense took over from reflexes. Stavarakis went cheaply by his standards, caught in the deep like half his team as they tried to counter the wet outfield. Todd McDonald went to a beauty, bowled by lefty Rob Topp, across to leg then cutting back sharply, bewildering the batter. Dayboro were happy at lunch having contained the damaging Cowboys to under 200 with tight bowling and catching. Then the storm hit, not from the skies but from the Cowboys’ attack, Harry’s outswingers from one end, Barra’s offcutters from the other. One tightening the screws, the other through the gate, stumpwards. Dayboro were gone after eight overs of the best bowling of the season, four down and only dignity to play for. Mellor and Charlie Geddes hit sixes then out, Mike Freeman dug in, Mal Geddes couldn’t restrain himself and the score limped to 60. Most of the Dayboro dismissals were bowled, most of the Cowboys’ dismissals were caught. Cricket can be a funny game.

LOOKING BACK - DAYBORO HISTORY Dayboro 1921 (ca) The Telegraph of 16th December 1920 reported on the monthly Pine Shire Council meeting “Correspondence…From Ch. Thorpe, Dayboro asking permission to erect a verandah over the footpath at his shop… This was left in the hands of Mr. Bradley…” His shop is on the right in Williams Street in this photo. Approval must have been given as an awning can be seen in front of his shop. There are nappies on the clothesline

out the back. His youngest daughter Eunicia was born on 19th February 1921. Charlie Thorpe sold the property to his brother-inlaw David Hall Hamilton in November 1924 who in turn sold his refreshment rooms and fruit shop to Thomas & Eliza Taylor in December 1925. The business changed hands a number of times until 1949 when the property was sold to Mary Winkel who used it as a residence although a dressmaker’s business was conducted in part of the building. Over

the years the building, which became 10 Williams Street, was used as a private residence. A gallery known as No. 10 Gallery was established there in the 1990s. Peter Lake, AMP agent, was a tenant for quite some time. Its last lease on life was as Craig’s Cottage, a homewares and giftware store. This business was flooded in January 2011, re-opened after a number of months, and sadly was destroyed by fire later that year. Carmel Bond
