KNOW THE RULES: PERMIT TO LIGHT A FIRE Samford Rural Fire Brigade Many landowners are still clearing the debris following TC Alfred, while others are preparing for the upcoming bushfire season.

The question is “Does your intended fire need a Permit?”

If your stack is less than two (2) metres in any direction, a permit is not required. However, it would be appreciated if you are a Samford local, please advise Samford RFB on 3289 1441 of your intent to burn.

If the stack or area of vegetation to be burnt is greater than two (2) metres in any direction, then the answer is “YES”.

The Fire Warden may also impose other conditions such as: number of people on site to assist, types of equipment on hand, water resources, time of lighting or assistance from the local rural fire brigade.

Just before lighting, there is a requirement to notify Firecom on 1800 017 029 and Samford RFB on 3289 1441 or as directed by Fire Warden.

How to apply for a Fire Permit

It is a legal document issued by a Fire Warden or the Chief Fire Warden.

Protects you from liability, providing the conditions and directions of the permit have been adhered to.

There is no cost involved. It is free.

Specifies the weather conditions (wind, temperature, humidity and rainfall) under which the fire can be lit.

• Fill in an Application for Permit to Light Fire. Available from your Fire Warden, your local rural fire brigade or download from the QFD website – www. fire.qld.gov.au.

• Contact your Fire Warden (listed inside the back cover of the Village Pump).

VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD On Thursday 1st May a community information meeting was held at the Samford Farmers Hall. Its purpose was to keep local residents up to date with developments around aircraft flightpaths, noise and emissions. This was well attended with 40 residents engaging on a wide range of topics. Tess Bignall from SAAAG chaired the evening followed by special guest speaker, Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance Chair, Professor Marcus Foth.

A wide range of topics were covered including, increasing air traffic numbers, the non-use of SODPROPS, the upcoming Airservices Australia announcement of new flight paths, the role of the Aircraft Advisory Board, loss of amenity, noise impacts, tank water contamination, flight caps, curfews, and Brisbane as an ‘airotropolis’. The vast amount of information and resources available on the BFPCA website was highlighted and engagement with this community led organisation encouraged.

Attendees came from the local area along with Brisbane and even Bribie Island. Both Tess and Marcus answered a wide range of questions from the floor with a very engaged audience. The meeting lasted a full two hours with many discussions continuing as the hall was packed up.

ANZAC DAY 2025

Samford RSL Sub-Branch ANZAC DAY 2025 This year’s ANZAC day began with a damp dawn service at the RSL in Main Street, where organisers were contemplating whether to cancel the main service at the Avenue of Honour due to unfavourable weather conditions indicated by the radar.

Despite the rain, over 100 attendees participated in the dawn service, during which one of Samford’s stalwarts of community service, Bill Gibson, was recognised for his significant contributions as Secretary to the Samford RSL sub-branch over the past 11 years.

Bill’s community service is rooted in his conscription into the 7th intake for service in the Vietnam War, where he completed a 12-month tour in the infantry between 1967 and 1968, including patrols during the Tet Offensive of 1968.

After returning to Australia, Bill pursued a career in IT, married and raised three daughters in Samford. His dedication to community service has been evident through his long-standing involvement, including serving as Secretary of the Samford & Districts Progress & Protection Association for over 20 years and actively participating in Friday night swim club events.

Following the dawn service, a committee meeting was held to decide whether the main service should proceed at the Avenue of Honour. It was agreed to go ahead, although modifications were necessary such as cancelling the flypast due to the closure of Caboolture Airfield and closing access to the disabled car park due to wet and muddy conditions.

The service commenced with a tribute to Mark Orreal (Bilko) for his crucial role in establishing the Avenue of Honour and organising one of Samford’s most

well-attended social events. Mark’s community involvement began at age 16 when he joined the Australian Army and rose to the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment, undertaking mine and unexploded bomb disposal duties.

Post-military, Mark succeeded in small business and redirected his energy into community service with the rural fire brigade and RSL, eventually becoming an RSL District President. Mark is an ardent advocate for veterans and is highly committed to community service.

Due to increased responsibilities in his new role, Mark has delegated the organisation of ANZAC and Remembrance Day Samford services to Paul Smith, Vice President of the Samford RSL sub-branch.

Paul, a former mine clearance diving officer who joined the Navy at 15, split his career between the Navy and the merchant navy, ultimately serving as a foreign-going

master in the oil and gas division of Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping companies. Paul aims to continue Mark’s efforts in encouraging veteran participation in community service, believing that early military service provides a strong foundation for life as evidenced by Bill, Mark and Chris Ellis, the 2025 Avenue of Honour Guest Speaker.

ANZAC DAY 2025 Continued from Page 3 Chris, a resident of Samford Valley for 26 years, is known in Samford for his engagement with Rotary, the Catholic Church, and religious instruction at Samford State School. What is not so well known is he is also a returned Vietnam veteran, piloting Iroquois helicopters (Huey’s) in Vietnam.

Chris delivered a poignant speech at the service, combining empathy for a military combat dog who had his paw stood on during the mounting of the catafalque party, to reflections of seeing the Southern Cross on the horizon and its reminder to him of home during night flights. Vietnam veterans here might remember Chris transporting them during tough times.

Visitors to the School were writing on old slates (remember them, anyone?) and one creative little ANZAC actually left us with a lovely memory on the slate (pictured below) which is now on permanent display in the School. Obviously, the spirit of ANZAC was alive.

Chris (pictured above) joined the RAAF as a 16-year-old apprentice in January 1959, became a pilot in 1965 shortly before marrying Geraldine, and retired in September 1979 as a Squadron Leader.

He and Geraldine have four children and nine grandchildren. Chris exemplifies the ANZAC spirit and remains one of the fittest octogenarians in Samford.

The service concluded with the weather clearing and the sun shining through the clouds. It appeared as if the heavens acknowledged the 100,000 Australian Defence Force personnel who have died and the many more injured in conflicts commemorated annually on ANZAC Day. The Samford Museum’s ANZAC Day celebration was a truly great success this year. There were a lot of nervous volunteers in the wee hours, with pelting rain causing heartburn to many of us. However, the rain cleared away and presented us with a very lovely day and the people of not only the Samford Valley, but many from further afar, turned up in numbers to celebrate the occasion.

The spirit of ANZAC Day was present with a very well attended March which began with an 8:00am service at the Avenue of Honour, after which the crowd moved along Main Street and turned left up Station Street, making their way to the Museum.

Our volunteers were on hand with hot drinks and food and we were extremely busy providing early morning sustenance.

Parents were kept busy with requests from their family members to photograph them trying on oversize (for them) service uniforms and loving the fun. The Treasure Hunting and guessing games kept the kids busy for ages.

Our Blacksmith is proving to be more and more popular, with a line of amateurs eager to make rings, bracelets and poppies. The grounds echoed all day with the sounds of metal on metal and the result was a lot of

ANZAC DAY 2025 TRIBUTE TO THE LIGHT HORSE BRIGADE LEST WE FORGET On Friday, 25th April,2025, I had the profound honour of joining a group of dedicated riders for the third time, as we made our way through the main street of the Samford village. Together, we rode in solemn tribute to the Light Horse Brigade, firstly to the museum and then the memorial on the hill. The air was thick with reverence, the weight of history pressing gently upon our hearts as we rode — each hoofbeat a step closer to remembering the bravery and sacrifice of those who had gone before us.

Parents and their children lined the streets, waved, cheered and took photos.

Though the riders wore red shirts, symbolizing the red poppy that honours the fallen, I chose to wear a blue shirt, a more personal symbol of my own reflection on this day. Around my waist, I draped the Australian flag, its edges fluttering softly in the breeze, and it trailed down over my horse’s rump, an ever-present reminder of the land and the legacy we were honouring.

For days, a rain band had hung heavy above us, its dark clouds persistently pouring their weight upon the earth. But on this sacred day, though the brooding, irongrey clouds had emptied their sorrowful depths in the hours leading up to our ride, the heavens seemed to pause. For those precious two hours, the rain held off, as if the sky itself had drawn a deep breath in veneration. The air was cool and gentle, the sky a soft, azure blue and the world felt still — nature, in its quiet grace, honouring the moment, allowing us to ride undisturbed, wrapped in a serene, almost sacred silence.

It was more than just a ride; it was a living tribute to those who fought and fell for our freedom, their memory intertwined with the land beneath our feet and hooves.

In the moments of that hallowed ride, I

felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude, of awe, and of humility. The horse beneath me, the flag wrapped around me, the quiet procession — it was all part of something greater than myself. As we rode toward the memorial, I knew that what we were doing was not just honouring history, but carrying forward a legacy of courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment.

In Australia and New Zealand, 25 April holds a deep and sacrosanct meaning. It is a day set aside to honour those who gave their lives in war — those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that others might live in freedom.

At the Samford memorial, with the flags flying at half-mast, we gathered in quiet unity, each of us lining up our horses in the utmost respect. We remembered those who had given everything. Those whose courage and sacrifice allowed us the freedom we so often take for granted. We bowed our heads, allowing our hearts to speak the words that could not be uttered, in solemn

reverence. For a full minute, we stood there — not as individuals, but as a collective, bound by a deep and sacred purpose

ANZAC Day at Playgroup In the lead-up to ANZAC Day, our playgroup explored the themes of remembrance and respect through a range of activities. The children created poppy flowers using red play dough, black beans, and sprigs of rosemary, and enjoyed poppythemed water painting. Parents sat with children to read Lest We Forget by Kerry Brown, a thoughtful book introducing young children to the meaning of ANZAC Day. A highlight this year was a special visit from members of Gallipoli Barracks, who brought a PMV (Protected Mobility Vehicle) to playgroup. The children loved seeing the vehicle up close and meeting real-life service members, making ANZAC Day even more real and meaningful for them.

On ANZAC Day itself, some of our families proudly represented playgroup at the Samford Memorial Service, held at the Avenue of Honour. The children helped lay a beautiful wreath made from their colourful handprints — a heartfelt tribute. Thank you to all who joined us in this important act of remembrance.

MOTHERING ON MOTHER’S DAY Robert Heinlein once said, “Being a mother is an attitude, not a biological relation.”

Although on Mother’s Day we take time to recognise and honour our wonderful mum (biological or not), who mothered and nurtured us as we grew up, maybe there are others who deserve a thought on this day too. Perhaps we were fortunate enough to have others who surrounded us with care, protection and kindness like a grandmother, aunts, sisters, teachers, a therapist, a doctor or friends. Perhaps those people as well as our mums are still part of our lives, mothering us, being there when we need them, listening to us, understanding us, helping us solve life’s challenges or drying our tears.

Are your mother and mother-figures the “voices in your head”, offering encouragement and comfort? Are you someone’s mother-figure offering unconditional love and support? Do you mother your mum?

The gentle art of mothering is coloured by unconditional love; patience; empathy; belief in our kids and others; respect; active listening and communication; consistent clearly stated values, rules and boundaries; flexibility; encouragement;

Samford Golden Valley Pony Club resilience; open-mindedness; and a cracking good sense of humour. This art is not only practiced by our mother but by our motherfigures too, though they might not use all hues. It’s important to remember that there is no one “right” way to mother or be mothered. Mothers and mother-figures are human as well as humane. Mistakes are made that we can all learn from, that we can forgive.

CELEBRATING MOTHER’S DAY Mums Behind The Business While being a mum is one of the most rewarding jobs out there, for many it is often paired with another job.

Working mums are on the rise with The Australian Institute of Family Studies finding that in 2022, both parents were employed in 71% of couple families with children under 15 years, compared to 56% in 2000 and 40% in 1979.

Our mums aren’t only working, they are heading up local businesses to keep our community thriving.

We asked some well-known and wellloved mums-behind-the-business three questions each about the highlights and challenges of providing a community service while also providing as a mum.

I was lucky as a chiropractor. I really could choose my own (work) hours and so when my children were young, I was able to start work after I dropped them at school and then my husband and I worked hours that meant someone was home most of the time with the children, when they were not at school.

I think one of the biggest challenges being a mother and a business owner was always a little feeling of guilt thinking you’re not doing enough for your children. But on the flipside, I know my children were proud that I managed to work and help so many people while actually being a mum.

It was a good business in a great community, so we knew it had potential.

Initially, I continued with my full-time job and did the books for the business. I also helped out on weekends when it didn’t clash with ‘taxi’ duties for sport!

We have a lot of young staff, so seeing them grow up and find their path forward in life is very rewarding.

Today everyone is busy, so time is our biggest challenge to get everything done. When we took over the business, our sons were in their young teens, so making sure they could still continue with their sport/studies etc was important, but at times tricky. We’ve been fortunate they have all worked in the business at some point (and two still do), so making time for family in these now young adult years, is more about catching up at work at the Patisserie.

My four children attended primary and high school in the local area, Samford and Ferny Grove. Having my business in the local area allowed me to be close at hand for my children to assist them when needed. Now I am close at hand for my grandchildren, who also attend school in the local area!

I wanted to be available for my children after school and on the weekends.

Instructing Pilates allowed me the freedom to work/run classes when the children were at school and in the evenings when I have been supported by my husband for the children’s care.

Well, I could make a very long list as every working mother can. Specifically for my work, I did miss being at home for bedtimes and in the early evenings, I feel this was a sacrifice made by both my children and myself. There is always the challenge of producing healthy meals, running your home and being available to listen and action when needed however as a business owner the challenge can be flexible enough to manipulate the needs of both the business and the home life.

Having our own clinic has always been the dream. As vets, we come into the profession with a desire to help animals and their owners. To make a difference in their lives. Samford is the community where we started our careers, saw us drop our kids

to daycare, where they attended primary school, after school sports, pony club, and through all these adventures we have made Samford our village for our family. Having a clinic here makes sense. We want to look after our village. To continue to be part of their lives and give back where we can.

I feel like it has made me more empathetic to people and their struggles.

I see that mum with young kids getting frustrated waiting for her appointment.

Keeping wait times short, making it fun and education for the kids, involving kids with the care of their pets.

We try to make a visit easy for the pet and the people! I feel like I’m more compassionate and understanding about when we feel like we aren’t on top of it all as mums. Because we aren’t! We are juggling so many balls. It’s ok to feel overwhelmed – and if a sick pet adds to that, we try to ease the stress.

Time! I feel like I’m always running from one thing to another and never feeling like you’re across everything. As the school will attest, I’m terrible with emails and permission slips! I’m definitely not a superwoman, and often feel like I’m not giving either thing, business or mum-work, 100%. Lowering my standards is a challenge!

Accepting that we can only do what we can do is something I’m working on. And self-care – taking time for me. Juggling motherhood and business owner is hard, but I’m grateful to have Dan by myself, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I adore my family, and I love my job!

I grew up in Samford, so when the opportunity came up, I thought—what better way to give back to a community that means so much to me? I’ve worked in big companies and also for myself as a sole trader, so this felt like an exciting new challenge.

Being a woman-owned business with two amazing female employees—who are also mums—really shapes everything we do. Motherhood has had a huge influence on how I run my business. It’s taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of flexibility—all of which carry over into the way I lead and make decisions. It doesn’t take away from what I bring to the table—it adds to it in every way.

Honestly, one of the biggest challenges has been trying to juggle it all—being present for my kids while also showing up fully for my business. There have definitely been moments of guilt, like I wasn’t doing enough in either role. But over time, I’ve come to see that being a mum actually makes me a better business owner.

It’s taught me patience, resilience, and how to handle curveballs—which happen a lot in both parenting and running a business!

There are many more local female business owners who do the mum/business juggle. These lovely women are just a few examples we wanted to share with you to celebrate mums on Mother’s Day. From a community that has benefitted from your leadership, expertise and from the wonderful children being raised, a very happy Mother’s Day to each of these incredible ladies, and to every mum and mother figure out there, striking a similar balance between being a mum and doing their absolute best with everything else life asks of them!

The work is a collection of gently reflective cameos about people in Jennifer Robyn’s life who have shaped her very positive outlook, who have helped her through the best and worst of times and through times in between. Like many of us, Jennifer Robyn has been down the deepest darkest valleys of life, then up the steepest roughest mountains, and yet she says, ‘Good stuff happened before. Good stuff will happen again. The bad stuff is now woven into the tapestry of life. You don’t get ‘closure’. You don’t get ‘over it’. You cradle it gently and respectfully – not letting it define who you are.’

That’s what this book does, cradles the good moments that happen in hard times gently and respectfully, inspiring others to discover beauty and hope in small seemingly insignificant actions, as Jennifer Robyn did, giving permission to us to be open not only to the love of family and friends but also to a love of the world community. OUT & ABOUT Clean Up and Support Women Experiencing Domestic Violence Queensland residents are being called to take action this May by registering a local Clean Up event – not only to protect the environment but to also support women experiencing domestic and family violence.

In a groundbreaking partnership, Clean Up Australia and the Ubuntu Foundation have joined forces to launch a communitydriven initiative that turns volunteer action into direct financial support for women in need. For every person who registers and participates in the Ubuntu Clean Up in Queensland between 1 - 31 May 2025, the Ubuntu Foundation will donate $20 to Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ), to help provide legal and support services to women facing domestic violence.

The Ubuntu Foundation and Clean Up Australia partnership is founded on the power of community to create real change by connecting with the natural environment and each other. With mounting distress about the ecological and climate crisis, feelings of increased isolation and hopelessness, volunteering to pick up

litter can provide a simple, immediate, and collaborative antidote.

This call to action comes at a critical time, as Queensland recovers from recent severe weather events that have left a trail of environmental damage across waterways and public spaces. The aftermath of the latest ex-tropical cyclone and Clean Up Australia’s most recent Litter Report results show an urgent need for further education and community Clean Ups across Queensland.

With imminent soft plastics recycling trials announced in 2024, there is further call to educate the community on the importance of recycling, particularly to prevent soft plastic litter, which saw an increase of 5.7% and a 2.4% increase in beverage containers in the report’s findings.

May marks Domestic Violence Prevention Month, highlighting the importance of supporting services that help women and children in crisis. This initiative provides

Queenslanders with a unique way to come together and connect as a community to contribute to environmental restoration and social justice at the same time.

Women’s Legal Service Queensland CEO Nadia Bromley said: “Women are more likely to disclose domestic violence to members of their networks and communities. Events like this one, where all of Queensland is invited to come together with their local community to clean up, also remind us of the power of community connection and the importance of coming together to have important conversations and raise awareness. We are so grateful to be part of this work which will positively change our environment and the lives of many women.”

ROSELLA JAM RECIPE Here’s a simple recipe to try with your fresh-picked rosellas.

Ingredients: 500g fresh rosella calyxes (red outer petals) 2 cups water Juice of 1 lemon 2 cups sugar Method: 1. Separate the red petals (calyx) from the green seedpods.

2. Boil the seed pods in 2 cups of water for 20 minutes. Strain and keep the liquid.

3. Add the red petals and lemon juice to the liquid and simmer for 15–20 minutes.

4. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Boil until it thickens (test on a cold plate).

5. Pour into sterilised jars. Store in the fridge and enjoy on toast or scones.

Samford Area Mens Shed Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Geoff!

For those of you who have never been introduced to a real-life Forester, as of this moment you can’t say that anymore. People can tell, just by listening to the “timbre” of his voice, that he poured his heart and soul into Queensland Forestry for nearly 40 years.

In his lifetime he’s seen huge changes, with plantation forests now producing more wood for commercial use than our native forests. Many of our state forests are now set aside for nature conservation in National Parks.

At SAMS, he’s an avid woodturner, and mentors other members in that ancient art. Most of us end up turning wood into kindling, but Geoff’s work stands out as a passionate example of what we can aspire to.

For a couple of months each year, he and his lovely wife travel across Australia in their home-away-from-home motorhome.

One of them is a keen quilter, and is still happy to suspend her quilting, stitching and patchworking social life for the open road, while Geoff gives a David Attenboroughstyle documentary on the infinite varieties of passing woodlands.

“There’s nothing like a good old campfire on a road trip to bring back to life the spirit of the outback”, Geoff tells us. “One derelict

fence post made from a gidgee tree will burn for hours while we sit around and tell yarns.”

They often take their dog Moe with them camping. Moe has long, curly brown hair and floppy ears. “Unlike me”, Geoff hastens to add, pointing to his ears. In Armidale one time, the circus was in town, so they took Moe to check out the llama enclosure. As soon as they did, the llamas claimed him as their long lost cousin. They locked eyes on him, following his every move and giving off strange “Welcome home” noises, jostling for front row seats. Poor Moe realised he was in big trouble. It was all he could do to hightail it out of there in a mad panic, relieved his virtue was still intact.

Geoff admits he’s not into robotics, A.I., 3D printing or social media, but loves a good book and can’t do without his mobile phone. “I still think I’m a pretty with-it octogenarian,” he says cheerfully. So do we, Geoff, so do we.

Samford Bowls Club The first of four games of the D’Aguilar Range Cup was held at Dayboro mid April and was won by the Dayboro team who narrowly beat our Samford team, with the next game on 15 May at Woodford.

The Club marked NAZAC Day with the special annual Skirts & Shirts bowling event - Men (Shirts) and the Women (Skirts) play the “battle of the sexes”. The Men successfully retained the trophy, yet again! The day started with a short reflection by bowlers present, giving thanks to our ANZACs in honour of the sacrifices made for our country.

On Monday 28 April President Desley Broad and club ladies hosted a fellowship day proudly and generously sponsored

by Belle Property Samford. Teams from Bongaree, Northern Suburbs, Aspley, Chermside, Everton Park, Ferny Grove, Red Hill, St Lucia, Joan Brown and friends attended. Thanks to all the volunteers for a successful day. Lunch was prepared by Samford CWA and our bowling member, Ada, prepared the deserts.

The Club Championship games are getting to the sharp end with several now completed. Peter Wilson defeated Simon Biggs in the finals of the Men’s A grade singles and Lesley Maher defeated Jo Ehrlich in the finals of the Ladies A Grade Singles. Winners of the Ladies Pairs final were Shirley Martin and Janice Ridley and Jo Ehrlich defeated Pam Campbell in a nail biting finish to the final Ladies Singles of the Vets competition.

Members are presently being asked to nominate to play in the Ladies Mid-Week Pennants and the Open Saturday Pennants.

Once the list is completed teams will be selected for both Pennant’s Competitions commencing in July.

The Club has nominated Janice Ridley as our ‘local hero’ in the 2025 Westfield Local Heroes program in recognition of her volunteering work at the Club spanning many years, including volunteer Club coach, organising social functions and barefoot bowls days, ‘Come and Try’ days and writing the Club’s article for this paper. Janice has coached many of the Club members over the years giving freely of her time.

Three finalists for each of the 42 Westfield destinations in Australia and New Zealand will be chosen with public voting opening on 19 August. We will keep you updated.

I am so pleased to advise that a new section of pathway will be constructed along Mount Glorious Road, between Wights Mountain Road and School Road, Samford Valley. This is a project that I have advocated for over a number of years and one that will be welcomed by the community and delivered as part of Council’s Missing Links Pathways Program.

There will be approximately 530 metres of concrete pathway constructed along with 2 kerb-ramps and around 50 metres of pedestrian safety fence. The new pathway will replace the existing gravel trail along this section of Mount Glorious Road that is well utilised and will provide safer passage for pedestrians and cyclists on their daily commute. Works are due to commence in early May, taking about six weeks to complete, weather permitting. While every effort is made to minimise disruption to this busy stretch of road, it is important to observe changes in road signage and be guided by instructions from works crews, who will generally be on site between 6am to 6pm Monday to Friday.

We enjoyed our first evening for the term with a cake to celebrate the birthdays we had missed. It was wonderful to catch up with everyone.

This year we celebrate 40 years of the singing group in Samford. More on that later in the year: Definitely having a special concert!

QCWA Samford At the ANZAC Day Memorial service this year, the CWA Samford was represented by our President Fiona who laid a wreath at the Avenue of Honour to commemorate and honour the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand’s men and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

On Sunday 27th April a group from CWA Samford participated in ‘ACWW Women Walk the World’ at Samford District Historical Museum. (Pictured top right) We all enjoyed a walk while looking at

the historical pioneer displays guided by Eileen, the informative Research Officer.

Eileen spoke about Samford’s past in the different sections of the museum. Everyone had fond memories reminiscing of the years gone by when they came across each display.

A delicious morning tea was served after the walk which gave the walkers time to talk more to Eileen and the volunteers. Thank you to the Samford Museum, Eileen and the volunteers for your time and knowledge.

Greater Brisbane Division International Day will be held on 24th May. CWA will be celebrating the Country of Study, the Province of Ontario, Canada. The venue is at the CWA Hall Redcliffe and the day will be Canadian themed with guest speaker, Joanne, an Ontario citizen. Morning tea and

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES BE THE LOVE Local multi-instrumentalist, choir leader, singer and performer Kate B, has taken to the recording studio once again to produce her third album which will launch at Zen Space on Sunday 18th May. If you’ve heard Kate perform locally you will know that her melodic sounds come straight from the heart, creating uplifting, inspirational music, filled with messages of hope, peace and joy! Kate is also an active member of the Samford Live committee and remains a strong advocate of the benefits of music to enhance lives.

This album was created recorded and engineered by Paulie B in the beautiful Yama-Nui studio on the Sunshine Coast.

Production was shared between Kate and renowned Australian singer, performer and Producer, Darren Percival who added his vocal richness and arranging magic to the album. He is also co-wrote some of these songs.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES Visual Celebration of our Environment Art and wildlife come together in May to celebrate the feature wall exhibition at The Slab Hut Gallery. The Slab Hut (The Samford Arts & Crafts Association) is located in John Scott Park and it is a notfor-profit organisation featuring the work of up to 60 local artisans. The feature wall art display for the month of May showcases the vibrant and colourful artworks of local and international award-winning artist, Dianne Minnaar. Works include Dianne’s flora and fauna paintings on canvas and timber, original prints signed by the artist and her unforgettable and exquisite frameable handmade art cards. You can also meet the artist at The Slab Hut on Wednesday 14th May from 10am-4pm.

Dianne is known as “the timber artist” and she derives her inspiration from her environment. Many of her artworks are delicately painted on locally sourced timber panels that are sometimes destined for the fire. She combines transparencies and 18k gold leaf in a unique and engaging way.

Dianne says “For many years I have been looking for tangible ways to celebrate our environment in visual form. Painting the local flora and fauna helps me to become

KEEPING YOU INFORMED HORSE VACCINATIONS What are the core vaccines that horses require in this area?

Vaccination protocols are crucial for keeping your horses healthy and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Here’s a guide to the primary vaccines recommended for horses in the Samford region.

Tetanus: This disease is caused by bacteria found in soil, dust, and animal manure. The spores enter the bloodstream through wounds and produce a toxin that affects muscles, leading to rigidity and spasms. Horses with unknown vaccination history need an initial vaccination followed by a booster a month later. Foals receive protection at birth and start their vaccination course from three months of age. Boosters are recommended every 5 years for lowrisk situations but may be given more frequently depending on disease or injury.

Strangles: A highly contagious respiratory disease caused by bacteria, leading to fever, nasal discharge, and abscesses in the lymph nodes. Vaccination typically starts at three months of age

with three doses given two weeks apart.

Annual boosters are recommended for adult horses.

Hendra Virus: A zoonotic disease that can be fatal to both horses AND humans, transmitted through contact with infected flying foxes. It causes acute and fatal respiratory and/or neurological signs in horses of all ages. The initial vaccination involves two doses given three to six weeks apart, followed by a six-month booster and annual boosters thereafter.

The vaccination schedule for horses varies

based on their age, use, and risk factors. For instance, foals born to vaccinated mares start their vaccination regimen at six months of age. Adult horses generally receive annual boosters for Hendra, Tetanus and Strangles, while competitive or pleasure horses may require more frequent vaccinations – these other vaccinations may be recommended based on specific risk factors and regional disease prevalence.

It’s crucial to consult with your veterinarian to develop a tailored vaccination plan for each horse, considering factors such as exposure risk, potential adverse reactions, and the severity of the diseases. Overall, adhering to a comprehensive vaccination protocol is vital for protecting your horses from serious diseases and ensuring their long-term health and well-being.

BIRDS OF THE SAMFORD VALLEY Compare the pair: Lewin’s and Yellow-faced Honeyeater The Lewin’s Honeyeater is a common resident throughout our district in woodland, rainforest, parks and gardens.

It is best known for its distinctive machinegun-like rattle call, but it also makes various chattering and scolding sounds, especially when it has located a threat such as a possum, snake or raptor.

The overall colour is dark olive-brown above, with slightly paler underparts with darker streaks. It has a distinctive paleyellow crescent on the neck and a thin yellow line from the black bill to below the eye. As the name suggests, it feeds on nectar, but small fruit and insects make up a significant part of the diet.

In my garden, Lewin’s Honeyeaters often feed on the berries of Native Peach (Trema tomentosa), Coffee Bush (Breynia oblongifolia) and Midyim Berry (Austromyrtus dulcis).

Numbers are boosted in the cooler months with flocks heading north from southern states, generally peaking in April/May. Early one morning in 2012, John Atkinson and I watched several flocks of hundreds of birds flying north over the South Pine River at the

Eco-Corridor, but I have not witnessed this spectacle since (the flight path is typically closer to the coast). The usual song is a loud series of cheery ‘chick-up chick-up chick-up’, but in flight it makes a ‘cheep’ contact call. It feeds by moving through foliage searching for nectar, honeydew, insects and lerps.

See if you can spot both species around your place and let the Village Pump know if you see any migrating flocks of Yellowfaced Honeyeaters.

Community Bee Innovation Fund Grant Program Applications for the second round of applications for the Community Bee Innovation Fund Grant opens in July. This grant program seeks to provide $5,000$50,000 in funding to businesses, schools and community organisations to develop Varroa Mite community engagement programs as well as monitoring and management tools.

The Varroa Mite is a parasitic mite which feeds on adult honeybees and reproduces within the honeybee colony. Infestations of the Varroa Mite can take 3-4 years to build up within the colony and eventually causes colony breakdown.

This grant is targeted to enhance the preparation of beekeepers and pollinationreliant industries for the future challenges posed by this pest. An Egg-ceptionally Fun Night At Brendale VIEW’s April dinner meeting, members donned their bunny ears and bought loads of chocolate delights along to fill many Easter hampers which were raffled off after dessert. Easter hampers were not only the highlight for the evening as our guest speaker Amanda Harvey from Q Rail enlightened us all about the benefits of making their next holiday a Q Rail adventure. Amanda explained the discounts we could enjoy by choosing a Rail experience.

Brendale VIEW members are also involved in a Women’s Refuge Collection in May, June and July.

We are now collecting essential items to help the many women and children in need.

Items include pillows, blankets, throws, personal care items and for the children, coloured pencils and colouring books.

This year VIEW is celebrating 65 years of making a difference – it’s a perfect time to join in our events and activities as we raise funds to support the education of children and young people experiencing disadvantage through The Smith family’s Learning for Life Program.

This was the case recently when representatives from Pine Rivers Community Finance who own and operate Community Bank Samford, visited RDA horse Paddington Bear. Their longrunning sponsorship of Paddington was renewed for another year, greatly assisting to meet the costs associated with his feed and care.

Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank, was one of Samford RDA’s first corporate sponsors. The initiative led to other local businesses and organisations coming on board to sponsor an RDA horse, while the bank continued its annual sponsorship year after year.

Currently, RDA horse Jess is waiting to be sponsored, with sponsorship for Harry now secured with a Highvale resident. In addition, another generous resident made a donation to cover RDA’s farrier costs.

BOOK REVIEWS SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES Jojo Moyes Sam’s hasty grab of a bag, almost identical to her own, in the changing room of her local gym, after a call about a rescheduled meeting by her misogynous boss causes major problems for Sam and Nisha the bag’s owner. Nisha, the pampered American wife of coercive billionaire businessman Carl, is so disgusted by Sam’s copy-cat bag’s cheap contents, she wears gym flip-flops and a robe back to her swanky hotel where she is supposed to lunch with her husband.

But Carl has called time on their marriage, cancelled her bank cards and begun a romantic relationship with his assistant.

Nisha is informed she can’t access her room to get her things or her passport.

She is suddenly destitute. Sam, the sole breadwinner in her very needy family, has no choice but to wear Nisha’s red crocodileskin Christian Louboutin shoes which seem to hypnotise clients and lead her to landing a series of new contracts. Sam’s daughter thinks she is having an affair and gives the shoes to a charity. Carl has made the return of those shoes to him the condition for discussing her financial settlement with Nisha.

While Jojo Moyes’s smartly plotted novel about two women from opposite ends of the economic scale whose lives become accidentally intertwined is well researched, especially regarding US divorce law, sometimes the narrative feels forced.

The convergence of these two middle-aged women with other women who have their back, as they try to solve their conundrums, underlines the stresses many face. Sam’s husband suffers from severe depression after his father’s death and his job loss. Her parents are needy and ungrateful. Her bully of a boss is determined to fire her, despite her being good at her job. She’s supporting her best friend, Andrea, through cancer.

For Nisha there is her forced separation from her son, the necessity to beg, accept charity and do jobs she once considered below her social standing. But there are many pluses to forming new friendships in such challenging circumstances. As a trophy wife, Nisha never had friends she could trust. HELD Anne Michaels In Held, random snapshots of John, a wounded World War One veteran, Helena his wife, their daughter, Anna (an absence rather than a presence in the story), her husband Peter the hat maker and their daughter Mara, a nurse in a field hospital, were taken between 1905 and 2025 and thrown from a great height onto a flat surface, their representation of that family’s history and their place in the world would be disjointed. Canadian poet-author Anne Michaels’s third novel, Held, is not an easy read. If you crave a narrative that follows the traditional path of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution and denouement, don’t read this amazing work. Its scenes loop backwards and forwards between 1902 and 2025, jumping about from a French World War One battlefield to North Yorkshire, to London, to Belarus and to various war zones. Michaels moves with a luminous seamless sensitivity between deep intimacy and the epic, drawing on the techniques of poetry and the lyric novel.

The snapshot imagery of the scenes along with the premise that the dead are a constant presence, remind us that history may seem like the discarded rubbish in a waste facility, but it is always true that the past exists as a present moment.

Sometimes the reader will see the connection between the characters’ stories but sometimes, like in life, these links are not explicit. The narrative is loosely held together by a series of recurring motifs which support the overarching theme of how goodness, hope and love can be held

across the generations through enduring the truth.

With every tightening of the screw, the tyrant makes our hope more precise. And nothing enrages a tyrant more than hope.
