ILLAGE PUMP VThe The
29 January 2023
The annual game between Dayboro and Samford was held on a sapping hot day. The Ben Winn Memorial Shield brings a different energy to the other cricket held before Christmas. The eskies are longer, the crowd is bigger, and it felt about 10 degrees hotter.
Samford won the toss and elected to send Dayboro in. The unique rules of the Winn Shield – 40 overs and max 4 overs per bowler – lets every player know they’ve got a part to play. Ben Winn and Kane Zalewski opened, playing watchful shots to the moving orange ball and latching onto anything in their zone. In representative games like this, everyone can play. It means when you get a chance, it’s really important to take it, as you may not get another.
Samford put down three crucial chances in the early overs: Ben, Kane and Barra all got a second life. Mick Draper wound the clock back with some text book swing bowling, taking the dangerous wicket of Kane and the Rangers were hopeful. Barra did Barra things, playing cuts off the back foot when given width and playing confidently down the ground when over-pitched. Jordan Lane bowled an exceptional over to Barra in the over of his retirement, but the 2022 Tiger Lawson Award winner showed his class, chalking up 53 and putting Dayboro in a solid position.
Charlie Geddes and Adam Heathwood kept the scoreboard ticking along, picking the gaps in the field and notching up boundaries. In the end, 40 overs of good bowling, good batting and rough fielding equated to a total of 201. Five an over was a challenging ask, but Samford felt if they could bat the overs, they’d go close to the target.
Batting your overs is the secret of Winn Shield. If you can hold on for the full allocation, things tend to work out. Spoiler alert – Samford did not bat their overs. Several batsmen started well and looked likely – Steve Simpson looked in good touch, Rod Shanley hit some lovely boundaries, Julian Heap used his long levers. But just as something was building, it was snuffed out, either through excellent Dayboro catching or just the right field setting. Ben Winn deployed an excellent
“three out” field, coupled with accurate and well-pitched slow bowling. Time and time again, Samford fell into the trap set by Jimmy Flynn, Boyd McKenzie and Mal Geddes (who is actually pretty quick).
Ben Jordin played a gritty knock of 42, at one point necking a mouthful of table salt to keep cramps at bay, but he eventually ran out of partners, Samford all out for 120.
Nikki Boyd MP, Member for Pine Rivers, presented the Tiger Lawson Award to Barra for player of the Chronicle Cup series. The Flynn family presented Charlie Geddes with the Kerry Flynn Memorial Shield for man of the match and in a fitting touch, Ben Winn was presented the shield, named in his grandfather’s honour, by his parents.
A report on the day wouldn’t be complete without mentioning who was absent. My Dad, David Bannerman, is unwell and couldn’t attend. We’ve received news recently that he might not be with us for much longer. The comradery and the spirit that Dad tried so hard to grow was on full display. Bringing people together, living in the present, enjoying each other’s company. He would have loved it. Stories about Dave flowed after the game. He means a lot to a lot of people. I’m proud to be his son.

VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
This is an edited version of an original email sent to ABC journalist Antonia
O’Flaherty.
Good Morning Antonia,
My partner Kerry and I purchased our beautiful 40 acre property at Cedar Creek in 2015. We selected this property very carefully. It’s surrounded mostly by Council and State bushland, our closest neighbour is about 1km away and most importantly it has no road noise. We both need that peace and serenity for our mental wellbeing.
We built our mountain top dream home in 2017 and have loved living here, until the flight path changes were introduced and the plane noise frequency became excessive. The plane noise exhaustion for us didn’t happen suddenly, it’s an accumulative thing that slowly builds and over time becomes almost unbearable. We did the unthinkable and we actually considered selling our beloved home, however we couldn’t bring ourselves to move.
We understand that we live close to the major capital city and some plane noise is unavoidable, however for us, it’s the concentration of flights over our home that we feel is so unfair. It’s the continuous stream of roaring jets that continues hour after hour that wears you down. It ruins your mood and can destroy what was otherwise going to be a peaceful and relaxing day.
We believe the flight noise should be shared throughout Brisbane and not concentrated over a few flight paths, as it’s the frequency that wears you down. One or two flights an hour is tolerable, however a stream of almost constant jet noise is not. Aside from creating additional flights to share the noise, we believe BAC needs to demand more flights take off and land over the bay and also Amberley needs to provide their airspace to commercial flights.
The most disgusting and inhuman matter we believe is Brisbane’s lack of a flight curfew. To regularly be woken up by a roaring jet in the middle of the night
is beyond infuriating. The requirement for humans to have 7-8 hours of quality sleep is well understood and for a corporation to be allowed to take away our human right to have undisturbed sleep in the name of profit is criminal. Even from a purely economic standpoint, I’m certain that the reduction in productivity that comes about through a loss of sleep would far exceed the profit gained by allowing late night flights.

On Friday 27th January 2023 my dwindling faith in human nature was restored: shortly after I broke down on Mount Glorious Road at midday, in that awful heat with groceries in the car, a young man stopped and came to my aid. We tried to re-start my car and he was willing to drive behind me in case it broke down again – it did, and so he got all of my groceries out of my car and into his and drove me home. His name is Peter and he lives on the mountain and I am so very thankful and grateful for his kindness and help.
Later, when trying to load my car onto a trailer to take it to the garage, yet another young man stopped and rushed over to help push the car up onto the trailer. Chivalry is alive in Samford.
Thank you to both those young men.
And my deepest gratitude too to my lovely neighbours Lynn and John for their efforts in taking their trailer to my car, loading it and then driving us to the garage at Keperra.

SDPPA PRESIDENT SIGNS OFF
SDPPA President Michael O’Sullivan, resigned recently due to work and family commitments, after serving the community in this volunteer role for the past 4 years.
The SDPPA was founded in 1970 by a small group of dedicated and determined locals with the goal of serving, preserving and protecting the interests of the community. Many great initiatives have been borne and many fights fought in the past 52 years, all supported by the volunteer led Association’s Management Committee and its members. Michael is proud of the role he has played in continuing the founding member’s legacy.
“The Association has been a large part of the Samford community for the last 50+ years. There certainly have been some great memories and achievements during my time as President, much of which was achieved by simply meeting with people who had ideas on projects that we could help with as an Association, or a fight that needed to be fought on behalf of the community,” he said.
These included meeting with the RDA to understand their needs which resulted in the purchase of a horse; assisting the Samford RFS in procuring some much needed equipment; providing funding to help with the new War Animals Memorial at the Avenue of Honour; and continuing the annual funding of the Samford Eco-Corridor after the grant money from the government had finally run out.
The SDPPA produces this newspaper each fortnight and it is through the profits of advertising revenue since the paper began in 1977 that the Association is able to not only keep the community updated, but also continue providing financial support to
local, volunteer community groups to assist with their work. The annual Christmas on Main Street community event is also funded this way. In the last 4 years, funding has amounted to approximately $250,000.
The biggest issue Michael has noticed is the downturn in volunteers, an issue echoed by many local community groups.
“Some of this is naturally through lack of time to give due to our work and personal lives, but some of it is just that members of the community aren’t aware of what to do, where to go, how to help or just who to turn to for help to get their own idea off the ground,” he said.
The SDPPA has a strong history of helping kick off projects before they become independent. The Samford Museum is a perfect example of this from a historical perspective, but in more recent times clever initiatives like the Samford Edible Garden Trail, management of the Samford Community Hub and the soon to be launched Samford Live are great examples of how the Association can work in the community.
VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD
Michael is quick to acknowledge the dedication of members through their advocacy and ongoing fight for appropriate NBN, and a fair go for flight paths over the valley, to name a few.
“I would also like to thank David Bannerman for the history lesson on why things were done the way they were done and Bob Millar for advice and knowledge of the development of the community over many years.”
“A huge thank you also to the people I have worked with on the Management Committee as well as the SDPPA subcommittees, for the countless volunteer hours they have dedicated to the community. So much great work goes on quietly behind the scenes which makes this a special place to live. There is still a lot to do and I will continue to provide assistance, advice and guidance where I can.”
The SDPPA thanks Michael for his leadership and dedication to the role. Taking up the reins as President this year is Leah Hudson, ably assisted by Don Cousins as Vice-President. Treasurer and Secretary will be announced next edition.
The SDPPA welcomes community members at its monthly meetings. You’re invited to come along, see what it’s all about, meet other residents and hear about what’s going on in your community. Everyone is welcome. Details below.

KATRINA RYAN MEMORIAL
Katrina tried her hand at many jobs including hairdressing, childcare and her final job as a stay-at-home Mum to her two beautiful boys, Jharal (6) and Luca (2). They were the light in her eyes and her whole world. Her two boys are now in the loving care of the Smart family.
We are holding a memorial afternoon at the Samford Rangers Soccer Club on 25th February 2023 at 3.00pm. All are welcome to attend and share their stories and love for our beautiful Kat.
We have a GoFundMe page set up to raise funds to help the boys in the future https:// gofund.me/75a33df2. Alternatively, you can donate to Beyondblue.
The Smart Family
Family and friends have been devastated to learn of the passing of Katrina Ryan on 22nd January 2023 at the age of 28. Katrina was born on 2nd May 1994 and unfortunately had a tough start, entering into the foster care system at the age of two and lived with several foster families before coming to Samford at the age of seven to live with the Smart family of Upper Camp Mountain.
Katrina attended Samford State School from grade 2-7 and Ferny Grove High School from grade 8-11. She made many great friends and created wonderful memories during her time at school. Growing up, she loved her soccer and a favourite story to recall from this time was the cracking win of her Ferny GBS soccer team over a very strong Albany Creek team.
For many years Katrina was a valued and respected member of the Samford Rangers Soccer Club. She threw herself into the game and much to her coaches’ frustration, often found herself face to face with a red card. Recently she had moved to Maryborough and joined the Doon Villa team who last year won the Division 1 premiership and are this year moving onto the Premier League, an achievement Katrina was very proud of.
SCHOOL UPDATE
“Welcome back to the school year. We have had a wonderful commencement and we admire the dedication of our families, students and staff to make this time so memorable,” said Mrs Collins, Principal of Samford State School. “On Monday, we inducted our Senior Leaders for 2023. The School Captains and Leaders were presented with their senior badges at the induction assembly by Deputy Principal of Years 4-6, Mr John Mauch.”
“We are incredibly proud of the hard work and citizenship that all senior students display. They are inspiring the future leaders of our great school,” said John.
Samford State School excitedly welcomed our new Prep students to the year. The students arrived with enthusiasm, willing to begin their learning journey. Our Prep teachers know these students well, thanks to the collaborative year-long transition plan developed by the Samford Early Years’ Network (SEYN). Members of the
SEYN include all early education services, therapeutic services, the Albany Creek and Arana Hills libraries, Early Childhood Education and Care Services and the PrepYear 2 teachers at Samford State School.
The transition plan began in Term 1 of 2022, with Mrs Trish Bennell-Kling, Deputy Principal of Prep-Year 3, making regular visits to the kindergartens to read. Children attended play dates throughout the year and even made appearances at our Easter Hat Parade, Junior Athletics Carnival and Under 8’s Day. Four, Get Set for Prep Playdates gave students an opportunity to meet their teacher and classmates for 2023 and spend time ‘being a prep for the afternoon’. Children also attended the Open Day, Transition Morning and Orientation Day.
“Due to our teachers knowing the students so well and the students feeling comfortable in Prep, our first day was full of enthusiasm, learning and laughter, and of course they received their Samford toys to make the day even more memorable,” said Trish. “Our transition plan will continue in 2023 to welcome our 2024 students, as the SEYN continues to strengthen each year.”

Dickson Community Awards Winner: Hayley Grant
Last edition we reported on the Dickson Community Awards and let you know we would be featuring our local awardees in future editions.
The awards recognise those who have made our community a better place through their volunteer work, with local resident Hayley Grant named as a recipient of the Community Service Award.
Apart from running local business, HMG Home Loans, Hayley dedicated much of her time and skills last year to contribute to the success of the Samford State School 150th celebrations.
Hayley joined an eager team of parents, teachers and community members to organise this major school event. She was responsible for sponsorships and the major raffle, and was extremely successful in raising funds for the school and its celebrations.
“Being part of the Samford State School family as well as the Samford local community is incredibly rewarding. We are so lucky locally to have such a fabulous
community vibe and a local school that has an amazing culture and spirit,” Hayley said.
“From sponsorships to the raffle, almost all businesses I contacted locally wanted to contribute and were thrilled to help our school. I felt immense pride and was blown away by the level of engagement and the generosity.”
Federal Member for Dickson, Peter Dutton, conferred the award, noting that Hayley was highly regarded in the local
community for her ongoing efforts to raise the profile of Samford State School.
“Hayley wholeheartedly gave her all, day in, day out, to help produce what’s regarded as the best fete Samford State School has seen to date,” he said. “She is known for her engaging and joyful personality and the ability to bring people together. This is a truly amazing awardee with great community spirit.”
Hayley’s community involvement stems from her love of social connection and engaging with others around her.
“Having a sense of community embraces spirit, character and togetherness,” Hayley said. “I truly feel blessed to live in Cedar Creek and be part of the Samford and surrounds community. We are so incredibly lucky to have such a village feel,” she said.
An appreciation of everything Samford has to offer inspires Hayley to give back to the community she greatly feels a part of.
“I’m proud of what we have locally; from the schools, local businesses, sporting groups, volunteer groups and other community groups. I love that I can go on a morning walk or visit a local business, and everyone is so friendly and engaging.”

Yesteryear Samford: Byron and Margaret Moss
While Samford has changed from its bushland beginnings, one thing that remains the same is why many families choose to live here in the first place.
A love of the great outdoors brought Byron and Margaret together after meeting at a bushwalking club over 60 years ago; it also drew them to the Samford area when they married soon after. Now aged 87 and 86 respectively, Byron and Margaret Moss remember Samford life not so long ago, including novel ways people made an income from their land.
In 1961, Byron and Margaret moved to a 5-acre lot, subdivided from a dairy farm on a dusty Camp Mountain Road.
“It was an event when they laid bitumen on Camp Mountain Road while we were there. That was a huge improvement for us,” Byron said.
The couple went on to raise six children in the Samford bushland: Joanne, John, Daniel, Michael, Naomi and Kelly.
“It was like a dream come true to live in the country. The space, the mountain views were wonderful and it was a great way to bring up a family,” Margaret said. “The children had a lot of joy growing up here, just doing simple things like going down to the creek, hiding in bushes and building all sorts of things.”
While Byron continued work in Brisbane in the Customs Department, the couple tried their hand at different ways to use
their land, recalling interesting endeavours from other locals as well.
“Lots of land around here was covered with Blue Couch Grass, which was favoured for lawns in Brisbane. There was quite an industry for (landscapers) to come along with a broad axe to cut the turf, load it on their trucks and pay us a royalty,” Byron said.
Byron and Margaret had a go at producing eggs for the Egg Board and grew many of their own vegetables. And while we may be impressed with today’s Coles delivery service, this was the normal way of shopping in 1960s Samford.
“Food was delivered back then,” Margaret said. “We’d crowd around a van to buy bread and there’d be a bun for the toddlers thrown in.”
“Our vegetables were good enough that we used to exchange them with Mr. Mitchell from the fruit shop. So, when he’d bring his ute with fruit and veggies to sell, we’d buy some off him and he’d buy some off us,” Byron said.
Growing produce was no mean feat in an area not serviced by water infrastructure and where bores often ran dry.
“Water was always a problem and you could never grow the sorts of trees and plants that people grow now. When reticulated water came along, everything looked a lot better out here,” Byron said.
“The beauty of the place has been enhanced now,” agreed Margaret. “Back then beyond the Village it was pretty dry
Cosmetic Acupuncture
bush, but now people have created beautiful gardens which we just love.”
For those still reliant on tank water, Byron notes that the cost of storing water today is more manageable than it was 50 years ago. The pair tried to dig their own bore but gave up when the difficulties of the task came to light.
“We used to need to buy another 1,000 gallon rain tank each time a baby was born,” Margaret remembers.
Along with a greater access to water came a backyard theme park on Mt O’Reilly Rd which the public paid to visit. Built by a local psychiatrist ahead of his time, the theme park existed before any came to fruition on the Gold Coast and provided much appreciated entertainment in the area.
“Adventureland used the contours of the hill for a great big slide. There was a castle, a pool, hay fights and people would dress-up in medieval clothes. There was also a big rubber chute that stretched down towards a gully that people would slide through,” Margaret said.
“I suppose today people wouldn’t make something like this as there’s too much risk. But 40 years ago, it was great for local families,” Byron said.
While Adventureland no longer exists, today’s Samford as an intersection of city and country retains its sense of adventure for families, old and new.

Samford Landcare is hosting a Clean Up Australia Day Walk in Samford on Sunday 5 March to engage people in making a difference within the environment and our community.
One of the major waste issues is plastic and according to Clean Up Australia, Australia creates 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, equating to an incredible 100kg per person! Only 12 per cent of this is recycled, with the rest ending up in our parks, roadsides, bush, waterways and oceans, or in landfill as rubbish. More concerningly, around 130,000 tonnes of the plastic we consume leaks into the marine environment each year. By 2025 it is predicted that 99% of seabirds worldwide will have ingested plastic. This is an horrendous statistic and we are all responsible for changing it.
WALK WITH US
We can all play our part on Sunday 5 March, joining with Samford Landcare who will supervise volunteers to follow an easy 4.5km loop from Samford Village and back, collecting plastic and general rubbish along the route. The walk is generally flat, very scenic and we’ll have a number of interesting stop points to learn about their special environmental role in the Samford area.
WHEN AND WHERE
Let’s gather at the Samford Landcare marquee in John Scott Park alongside Main Street Samford in time for the departure at 8.00am. The expected return time will be 9.30am. You are encouraged to collect plastic and general rubbish from your local area, or on your journey to the walk, and bring it along to deposit in the bins provided by Samford Landcare at the event. Clean up bags will be provided and we ask that you please bring your own gloves. Full details can be viewed at www. samfordlandcare.org.au.

Congratulations to all the riders and helpers at our first Showjumping competition of 2023. Over 120 riders ascended onto the club grounds and were provided with a well run competition to start the year off with a bang.
None of this could be achieved without such a huge amount of help and support from so many volunteers and supporters of the club. It was a hot January day, but all the riders utilised the shade and the shelter available to get some fun jump rounds in.
Mother and daughter team Terrina and Charlie (pictured) had a great time competing together and both came home with great results and trophies for all their hard work. Well done to each and every SGVPC rider who competed, assisted and made the day a success.
For Muster times and dates please see website or Facebook for all 2023 details.

In Pursuit of Hoppiness
While arts and crafts is a well-known local hobby, there’s another type of craft gaining traction as a pastime. Craft beer brewing is growing in popularity amongst beer aficionados and beginners alike, with resident brewer John Clark keen to meet other locals with this similar interest.
John has been brewing his own beer for over 20 years, noting some key advantages to fermenting at home.
“I think the two main benefits of brewing your own beer is firstly, the cost. You can brew top quality beer for a fraction of the cost,” John said.
“It’s not uncommon to brew a good craft ‘look alike’ beer (that might cost you $80 a carton of 24) for about $50 for 23 litres, or approximately 2 ½ cartons. Easy to see the economics in that,” he said. “Secondly, there’s a sense of achievement when you make something of quality that tastes really good!”
Despite these benefits, common beer brewing myths may prevent people from following their dream into the world of malt and barley.
“One of the great myths about home brewing is the taste. We all had a dad or
uncle, who brewed their own beer and they were the only ones who liked it,” John said.
“But the brews of today are of a high quality and you can get brewing recipes that copy other brews and it’s hard to tell the difference. Besides, after a while you tend to tinker with the ingredients and come up with your own unique flavours.”
Another preconceived issue is the time it takes to brew your own hazy pale ale. While sterilising bottles can be time-consuming,
John brews in kegs to get the most beer for his hours.
“The time I take to put a brew down, rack it off then keg it, takes maybe a bit over an hour of my time. The complete brewing process, from putting a brew down to drinking is about 4 weeks,” he said.
John is keen to meet other local brewers or those with an interest in brewing to share experiences and ideas, noting now is a great time to get into brewing given the recent beer excise increase by the ATO.
“It really isn’t as daunting as you might think. It’s a great past time and is very satisfying. And existing brewers are always open to new ideas and new methods. I would like to learn how to brew from scratch, like the grass roots brewers who make their own wort,” he said. “I am just trying to gauge the interest in brewing in Samford Valley.”
If you’re keen to learn how to brew or would like to share what works or what ‘ales’ you in your beer-making experience, please contact John on 0418 180 787. If enough people are keen to talk amber, he will organise a date, time and venue for a get together.

YOUR
180 FRIENDLY SWIMMERS RACE FOR BRONTE
The weather forecast for the Samford Stingrays Bronte Barratt Shield on Saturday 4th February was for a scorching hot day. Everyone was a winner when the weather Gods smiled, the skies opened, and a little bit of rain marked the cooling down of the day.
The Bronte Barratt Shield is named after our local Triple Olympian to pay honour to her enormous impact on swimming in the area, and Australia.
A standing round of applause must go to the organisers of the event and those helping on the day. This annual club invitational hosted 180 swimmers this year. Six clubs came together to race each other for the winner’s trophy (spoiler alert - Samford Stingrays took the title).
The Bronte Barratt Shield is a favourite for swim clubs for many reasons. It’s a friendly meet, helping to introduce the younger swimmers to race events. There is always lots of volunteers on hand to help show swimmers how to marshal, how to start and finish their races, and how to swim relays.
Many of our senior swimmers walked away from this meet with personal best times, indicating a fierce level of competition, the difference between a 1st and 2nd often fractions of a second.
With the 2032 Olympics in sight for many of these swimmers, the arrival of Olympic gold medallist, Bronte Barratt herself was a swim year highlight - and it’s only February. Bronte was enormously generous with her time, signing endless swim caps, swim bags and plenty of swimmers themselves were boasting Bronte Barratt signatures on their shoulders and arms. Temporary tattoos to a swim hero.
Local events like these could not be organised without a mountain of volunteers. In particular we’d like to extend our thanks to our Club President, Anna Wilson, and the club’s hard working committee – Melissa Gjerek, Tanya Miller, Darren Hodgetts, Tahnee Ross, Cassandra Parker, Debbie Child and Samantha Wilkinson.
Thank you to every parent who helped
sizzle a sausage or serve a slushie. 35 timekeepers from all clubs volunteered their time to deliver this fantastic event.
A special thanks to Joep from Joep Buijs Photography who attends the Bronte Barratt Shield and Samford Stingrays Club Championships every year and produces such beautiful images of our events. Seeing themselves mid-air in a dive, or flying for air in butterfly, our swimmers feel well and truly mighty.

SAMFORD SHOW HITS THE ROAD AGAIN 15 & 16 July
The Samford Show society has begun detailed planning for the July 2023 annual Show, after disruptions due to Covid and wet weather in 2020 and 2022 - but the biggest Show ever in 2021.
Show Society President Terry Hogan said that the Committee has been enlarged and refreshed by an enthusiastic band of new and younger members, good omens for a bright future for one of the community’s most loved annual events.
“Some volunteer-based organisations are having a hard time of it,” he said, “but our reputation for fun and commitment is bringing in new blood. We welcome anyone who supports the ideals of the Australian country show. We are taking a whole new approach to the way we reach out to the community through social media and have engaged Jordanna Allen, a member of a family with long term connections in the Valley, to help us out.”
Show Society Treasurer Ingrid Hutton confirmed that tickets will be available online from about mid- June. The Society has kept ticket prices generally at the same level as 2021.
Traffic management spokesperson David Reed said that entry to the Show will be easier and faster this year, with cars being directed off Showgrounds Drive to the parking area before ticket confirmation at entry gates into the Show area itself.
“The Show has been growing in popularity in recent years as we expand the range of attractions, and we are acutely aware of the need to get patrons off the road and out of their cars as quickly and safely as possible. It’s great to have so much free parking space,”, he said.
Terry told The Village Pump that further announcements would be made in coming months about attractions at this year’s Show. “We’re always looking to build on what we do best and how we can improve the experience. Watch this space”.
As we approach the month of March, the weather in the region is typically still hot, humid and wet. In this article, we will provide a list of the best vegetables and herbs to plant during this time, along with some helpful tips on how to successfully navigate the hot and humid conditions to achieve optimal results.
We recommend the following vegetable and herb crops to plant in March: Ideal to plant are:
• Chilli – Loves heat and humidity, plant in bed corner.
• Brazilian Spinach – Allow plenty of space and water well.
• Ceylon spinach – Use a climber. Okay to plant are:
• Basil – Allow plenty of space, partial shade.
• Cucumber – Grow on climbing frame, water in morning to reduce mould, full sun.
• Coriander – Create partial shade, needs very fertile soil to leaf well in warm times.
during their growing periods.
Growing food in the month of March can pose several challenges, but with the strategies outlined below, you might be amazed at the number of crops that can flourish:
• Ensure you have good drainage. If beds get too wet, plants will die.
• To reduce mould, have good airflow, use climbers to get the plant leaves off the ground and water in the morning.
• Use the best compost you have to plant your seedlings.
• If you have planted a green manure crop in December as part of your soil fertility rhythm, your beds will be highly fertile and ready for many crops.
Due to the weather fluctuations in March, it’s common for plants to experience low vitality and become vulnerable to insect attacks. However, the strategies mentioned above can help boost plant health and protect them from the adverse effects of the weather extremes. To further improve plant vitality in my garden, I use biodynamic soil and foliar preparations.
For more resources on planting visit the Gleanr platform at (www.gleanr.com.au) which provides:
• Growing information on 140 crops in the Plant Wizard localised to our climate.
• Tip sheets, videos and images on how to create and manage food gardens in the Toolshed.

In the Gleanr planting calendar, you will discover an additional 70 vegetable and herb crops that are suitable for planting during the month of March in our local climate. Detailed growing instructions are provided for every crop including tips to deal with temperature and rainfall extremes

FERNY SWIM CARNIVAL SHINES
The Ferny Grove School Swimming Carnival was held on Wednesday February 8. It was an opportunity for some outstanding young swimmers to shine! This year the Student Representative Council ran alternative activities including lawn games, board games and colouring in. These options were jam-packed with students and it was so nice to see them all getting involved, meeting new friends and enjoying the day. The Tech crew kept the music going all day and staff kept students entertained with dance offs.
Ferny spirit was shining too and pride in the sporting culture was palpable. A carnival of this nature could not run without the selfless enthusiasm and assistance of the Sport and House Leaders on the day. As always, there can only be one winner and this year it was - KARA KARA!
Congratulations to the Kara Kara team and all of our age champions!

Meet Myf - fearless, loving and the kind of cat that is “love on four feet” according to her owner, Murray. At 14 years old, Myf’s balance and behaviour began to change.
Solensia, is offering a solution for pet owners worried about pain and the quality of life of their ageing cats.
“Solensia is a monthly injection that helps control the pain associated with osteoarthritis,” she said.
“Osteoarthritis is not curable but there is plenty that can be done to identify and manage pain, and to modify the home environment to help senior cats remain comfortable. The treatment works like your cat’s naturally made antibodies to reduce pain signals. We can pair this with changes to bedding, litter tray placement, diet and environmental enrichment.”
For Murray and Myf, a diagnosis and a senior-focused care plan that includes Solensia, has been a game-changer.
“I now have my purrrrrrfect pet back,” Murray said.
“Myf has always been one for climbing great heights, and after we noticed some broken teeth, we wondered if she may have fallen. Myf also started urinating in unusual places and that was something she had never done before,” Murray said. “I now know that Myf was struggling with pain and osteoarthritis, and I was grateful to discover there is treatment available for cats.”
Dr. Holly Goldring, co-owner and seniorfocused veterinarian at Dayboro Village Vets, said a new monthly injection called
“My mother-in-law has just turned 100 and the least we could do is care for Myf as she ages too. It’s been very comforting to know we have all the diagnostic options at Dayboro Village Vets for Myf. We think Myf’s story could help other owners know there are new options in the treatment of osteoarthritis in cats.”

FLYING INTO ANOTHER PROJECT
Local resident Peter Cromarty’s book launch for his new novel Death or Grievous Bodily Harm, featured in the last edition of The Village Pump, but this is not Peter’s only project since retiring from a career in air traffic control and aviation safety. Adding yet another string to his bow, Peter has also been building a two-seat kit aircraft.
The Sling 2 is a South African built 2 seater aircraft kit that will be powered by a 100 HP Rotax engine and will run on car petrol.
It cruises at about 200 KPH and weighs in at 330kgs which is lighter than some Harley Davidsons. When fully laden with two people, bags and full fuel, the plane’s weight creeps up to 700kgs.
Peter expects it will take 1,200 hours for him to construct his light aircraft.
“I have a goal of flying it to Narromine for the World Gliding Championships in September in which, I hope, a friend of mine will be competing if he is selected for the Australian team. However, I fear that may be too ambitious a timescale. I hope to have it finished at the latest by Autumn next year,” Peter said.
This project comes as no surprise for someone with an extensive career in aviation.
“I always wanted to be a pilot but I couldn’t afford the cost of the professional licence, so I went into air traffic control (ATC) as a temporary measure until I could raise the funds for my commercial licence. I found I liked ATC and stayed. I have had a private pilot’s licence since I was 18,” Peter said.

“I worked in the north of Scotland, Northern Ireland, London and Bahrain during the Iran-Iraq war. Whilst in Bahrain, there were aircraft crashes, ships shot-up, covert and not-so-covert missions by the Iraqis and Americans. I was once heavily involved during the hijack of an Indian Airlines Airbus,” he said.
Peter decided to build his kit aircraft as a way of continuing to stretch himself in retirement.
“As one gets older, I understand it is important to keep one’s mind busy, learn new skills and take on new challenges.”
Peter also has a YouTube channel featuring some of the air traffic control incidents, accidents and hijacks in which he was involved at: YouTube @petercromarty or on his website: thecrom.com. His debut novel is available from his website.

Two great Samford institutions recently joined forces to celebrate their 10th year together. SPADEwerx Theatre actors - past, present and future - met with Samford Farmers’ Hall volunteer stewards in order to present them with $2,500.00 towards the Hall’s ongoing expenses. The money was raised from theatre ticket sales and raffles.
Samford Farmers’ Hall is an independent, community-owned hall, administered by a small group of dedicated volunteers who care deeply for the heritage building. It is not, nor ever has been, a Council-owned hall. It is self-funded.
The beautiful old Hall has been a Samford icon since 1918. SPADEwerx has been going

Look out for our next BYO play in May - an Agatha Christie “who-dunnit.”

Samford Bowls Club
It is almost 12 months since the devastating flood that caused so much damage to our club house and the bowling greens. When we heard this week that tropical cyclone Gabrielle had formed off the Queensland coast we were all glad that the projected track indicated Gabrielle would remain well off shore and would not affect our area. Hopefully our bowling friends on Norfolk Island will also miss out, as Gabrielle is projected to track their way.
It is amazing how our members and the community have worked together over the past year and with numerous grants we have been able to put that terrible event behind us.
Competitions
Each year we enter a team in both the Tyre Power Everton Hills Cup and the Brisbane District Bowls Assn Alex Gow competitions. This year we are off to a sound start with our Alex Gow team winning over Ferny Grove in round one and the Tyre Power team coming second in Pool B after a win against Northern Suburbs, then a close
runner up in a game against Chermside.
The Men’s Veteran Fraternity played at Samford Club on Monday 30th January. All 14 rinks were full with 112 players from all areas of Brisbane and District. It was a busy day for our team of support members making sure all players had a day to remember. The team from Windsor were the overall winners with a score of 4 plus 31 and a team from Northern Suburbs runners up with 4 plus 24. Our Bar Manager commented that not one glass of wine was sold on the day. All beer, soft drink and cups of tea, they may be older gentleman, but they sure know how to enjoy their day of bowls!
Village Barefoot Bowls is underway with 20 teams registered, 2 more than last season. New teams include, Vikings, Scorpions and the Mary Ringers. Some old favourites are back including the Desperados and the Bushrangers, (current holders of the Bob Miller Shield). Also playing are Samford Rotary and Garry Morrison’s team, now known as the Book Club, both 20 year veterans of Village Bowls, well done!

On Australia Day weekend 2013: Rain, up to 500 mls, fell. (Village Pump front page headline). Samford Museum’s Australia day event went ahead with some changes.
Samford Museum launched Tools on the Wall DVD in which men from across the region demonstrated traditional timber tools eg cross cut saw, froe, maul & wedges, mortice axe and more. The DVD was professionally produced with RADF grant funding.
Publisher Jack Sim launched the book, Innocence Lost. The Last Man Hanged In Qld written by Jacqueline Craigie. The story tells of the murder of a local lass, the culprit’s arrest and subsequent hanging in 1913.
History was the subject rolled out with the Australian Curriculum in 2013. Samford State School Y2 teachers and Samford Museum partnered to produce an educational and enjoyable program. Year 3 teachers organised a special ANZAC
learning experience for the students by visiting Samford RSL, Samford Museum.
Samford Village Heritage Trail was a popular request by groups following its launch on Qld Day 2009.
After some of our fundraising special events saw small attendances, Bev Campbell organised a Trash & Treasure day to boost the Museum’s income. Rain the previous day made preparations difficult. A financially successful day against the odds.

Australia Day was celebrated on a hot, dry summer’s day, copies of Tools on the Wall have travelled to numerous places in Australia and overseas. It can still be purchased for $20. Copies of Innocence Lost are also available at the Museum for $27.

Visual artists, ceramicists, jewellery, wood, textile artists and photographers are all involved and preparing work ready for exhibition and sale. Artists are also producing workshops in drawing, rag rug making, dyeing, watercolour, acrylics and unique artisan products.
A Studio Guide will be available soon with a description of each artist and their work, with maps and suggested “trails” to ensure you don’t miss any of the amazing
artists involved.
Sponsors and advertisers still have time to come on board and support this local event which attracts so many visitors to the region. For more information contact Trails Co-ordinator Karen on 0402 114 201 or trails@creativesamford.com.
Area Mens Shed
Life has now settled down after the hectic days of Christmas and New Year, followed by Australia Day. The kids are back at school so you can relax. But wait…….there’s more! There’s Easter in April celebrated over at least four days, followed by Labour Day.
Just because the men at Samford Area Men’s Shed (SAMS) are back at the Shed doesn’t mean that they have been idle. There is always things to plan, make and do.

There’s the Samford Show coming up later on in the year and it will come around quicker than the men realise, so the men have been busy getting their craftwork ready. There are lot’s of other projects to start and complete as well. The “woodies” have been busy completing furniture restorations and churning out the magnificent craftwork for which they are well known throughout Samford and beyond.
The “Steelies” have not been idle either. Recently, they successfully sold the vintage trailer and the camper trailer that they had spent many long hours and skill to complete. As is their custom, the “Steelies” have also been taking old metal and re-creating it as functional items.
The artists and photographers at SAMS have also been kept busy creating artwork and images, not only for their own satisfaction and enjoyment, but also to share with the rest of the SAMS community.
Meanwhile, the leadership team have
been getting on with the job of keeping SAMS ticking over and going from strength to strength.
Men of Samford and surrounds, why not come along and see what SAMS is all about. Just come to the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. Find out more at samfordshed. org.au or email samssecretary1@gmail.com.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT Samford Streetscape
There has been a lot of activity over the past few months and the upgrades to Samford’s Main Street are nearing completion with only a small section between Cash Avenue and the Samford Pub to go, due to finish in early March. Recent weeks have seen the construction of new footpaths, planting, trees and installation of furniture in and around John Scott Park. A beautiful Pink Trumpet tree has been planted in front of the CWA building for shade and to add some winter colour.
Once Main Street works are completed in March, the contractors will prepare the former tennis courts in readiness for the future carparking project off Cash Avenue North. I will update the community once further details on these works are available.
Have you been to TGIF?
Thank Goodness it’s Friday (TGIF)
at the Cedar Creek Public Hall is gaining popularity as a hub of community activity. Last month, the event saw a surge of attendance as locals gathered to catch up with friends and meet new neighbours. The hall was bustling with the sound of live music and the aroma of juicy burgers sizzling on the grill.
Children of all ages were delighted by the dedicated “kids area” which was stocked with puzzles, books, balls and other donated toys and activities to keep them entertained. And the sweet treats that were generously donated were a real crowd pleaser.
Mark your calendars for the next TGIF on 24th February where you can enjoy our burgers, sweets and soft drinks from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. The music will wrap up at 8:30pm leaving you plenty of time to sit back, relax and savour the moment with your favourite Friday arvo beverage. Don’t forget to bring along your camp chair, picnic rug and any snacks you’d like to nibble on. We can’t wait to see you there!
Cedar Creek Public Hall, 2 Andrew Road, Closeburn. Please note MBRC has recently changed the street number and the hall address will soon be updated to number 18 Andrew Road.

Cedar Creek Road Upgrade
Works are underway on the upgrade along Cedar Creek Road between Panorama Drive and 345 Cedar Creek Road with VMS boards in place alerting travellers and a site camp established. The project is part of Council’s Road Improvement Program and is an upgrade that has been long awaited and will be welcomed by local residents to improve safety along this stretch of road.
Please be aware of the works if you are travelling along Cedar Creek Road, take note of changed traffic conditions, look out for workers on the site and if you have any issues, please call my office on 3480 6455 or email darren.grimwade@moretonbay.qld. gov.au. It is anticipated that works will take around 15 weeks with favourable weather conditions.

OUT & ABOUT
UNDER THE BOAB TREE Franceska Jordan
This creative memoir/biography explores the immense challenges faced by Franceska’s Lithuanian grandmother, her activist mother and her humanitarian self. Her grandmother migrated to South Africa to escape poverty, disease, and antisemitism only to struggle in a country where equality didn’t exist but prejudice was rife. She controlled her life by controlling her daughter, Isabella.
Isabella advocated hard for trade unionism for exploited workers, especially the women. She married a handsome right-wing Christian alcoholic and wifebeater. Eventually she left him, moving around Southern Africa, agitating for fairer conditions for the disenfranchised of all cultures.
Franceska, her daughter, married young, but true to her upbringing, retained her Jewish beliefs and her independence. In Australia, she worked tirelessly to establish the Alzheimer’s Disease And Related
Disorders Association. Her strong advocacy for a fair go for the aged, the disabled and their families earned her the Medal of the Order of Australia (AM). Despite the achievements of Franceska and her mother, the book holds an overwhelming sense of grief and loss.
The use of present tense makes Jordan’s writing seem more immediate but sometimes she puts in her own “I” observation in the same paragraph as part of her mother’s story which I found disconcerting. I also found it difficult to follow the biography’s timeline at times. Her use of the boab tree as a metaphor for survival and hope was intriguing though the botanical detail often overshadowed the lyricism.
The information about the social changes in Southern African countries towards the end of Apartheid, and the slow development of change in care for the aged and disabled in Australia at the end of the last century and early this century, was fascinating. The absolute commitment to service of Isabella Jordan and her daughter Franceska is inspiring.

WHO’S PLAYING MY VIOLIN?
George Saldais
This is the autobiography of Juris (George) Saldais and his devoted father Martins who made a promise to his wife Valentina on her death bed in June 1939 that he would always look after their son (who was then just 18 months old). The pair lived in an apartment in Riga, Latvia where Juris was jointly raised by a loving live-in nanny during the early years of Soviet occupation.
In 1944, with Latvia then under German control, his grandfather gave Juris a violin, but he was destined never to play it. Facing either deportation or death, around midnight in early October, they fled their homeland with virtually nothing and travelled a horrifying 800 kilometres (around half on foot) across war-torn Europe to eventually reach the safety of the British zone in Germany.
Martins was an incredible man: loving, resourceful, insightful and ingenious. His uncanny ability to read complex situations and anticipate danger saved their lives many times during their long, harrowing journey.
After a 4-year hiatus in Displaced Persons camps, they headed for Australia in 1949. Despite arriving here at age 11 with virtually no primary schooling, no English and living in poverty, Juris later won a Commonwealth scholarship to go to university and he went on to become one of the country’s most respected architects, both here and overseas.
This is a truly inspiring story, which shows:
• the power of unconditional love to overcome major obstacles.
• the significant role chance plays in our lives.
• the sheer futility and horror of war.
• how, with sheer hard work, dedication and persistence, someone can achieve lofty goals from extremely humble beginnings.

Brendale Evening VIEW Club Update
New Year, new you, join VIEW!
Connect with other local women and support children in need.
The Brendale Evening VIEW Club is on the lookout for new members who want to give back to their community and make new connections with women in the area. Club President Helen said this year is the perfect time to join VIEW as social events are back on the calendar after a hiatus due to covid.
“We have had so much fun organising upcoming events for our club this year, including a trip to Hobart for the National Convention. These always feature fabulous dinners and speakers – but it is also a great way to understand how we help children and young people through The Smith Family.”
“We hear from inspirational young people whose education has been sponsored by our members, and who have overcome so much through the power of education – it truly is heartwarming and makes you so proud to be involved in VIEW.”
For its Back to School Appeal, The Smith Family is currently calling on Australians to sponsor children experiencing disadvantage. With new sponsors the charity can help another 3,800 students Australiawide through its Learning for Life education support program, providing financial assistance for essential school supplies, access to out of school tutoring and mentoring programs, and a Smith Family team member connected to the family who is on hand to support the child’s specific needs and interests.
VIEW is the largest community sponsor of Learning for Life students and has supported children and young people in need for over 60 years.
“We have all been hit by the rising cost of living, be it power prices, food or petrol. But these rises have had an even greater impact on those already doing it tough. Parents shouldn’t have to choose between putting dinner on the table or buying their child a uniform for school.”
The Brendale Evening VIEW Club supports the education of eight students through the Learning for Life program, ensuring they have what they need for the school year.
Dinner meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at the Aspley Hornets Football Club, 50 Graham Rd Aspley. Become a member or come as a visitor. Call Shayne on 0409 991 428 or visit www. view.org.au for further information.
