Scouts Build Samford Bridge

Samford Scouts and Wahminda Park Scouts recently held a joint Samford outdoor skills camp which featured pioneering and construction skills.
Pioneering is the art of using ropes and wooden spars joined by lashings and knots to build structures that are used in a wide range of Scouting and camping activities. The name comes from the 18th and 19th Century military engineers who went ahead of an army to “pioneer” a route, which could involve building bridges and towers with rope and timber (for example the Royal Pioneer Corps).
Pioneering skills include knot tying (tying ropes together), lashing (tying spars together with rope), whipping (binding the end of a rope with thin twine), splicing (joining or binding the end of a rope using its own fibres), problem solving, team building and skills related to the use, care and storage of ropes, spars and related pioneering equipment.
This is just one of the outdoor skills taught to Scouts throughout the year and is used for constructing small items such as camp gadgets like tables, up to larger structures such as gateways, bridges and towers.

The final project of the weekend was constructing a pedestrian bridge and having completed this, the Scouts are ready to tackle any project! If you wish to learn more about Scout pioneering skills for young people aged 5-15 years, contact www.samfordscouts.com.au.

In great news, the trailer canopy was completed just in time for the CLS crew to attend the Cedar Creek Public Hall Soup Day. As planned, the wagon-shape frame covered in bright orange ripstop tarpaulin material is eye catching and brought many comments. Now to give the wagon a name!

Did you know covered wagons were made in that shape as it was the most efficient way of using canvas without causing tears?
Back to Soup Day – fabulous home made soups, cakes, desserts, locally grown fresh fruits, along with tea and coffee was

available all day. Kudos to the band ‘Asleep at the Reel’ who played almost non-stop and had the crowd engaged all day.
Looking ahead, in having likely secured a great venue, September is planned for a CLS major fundraiser, the two-day Book Sale, which was sadly unable to be held in 2022.

Caf Lagarto Live Music Every Weekend
There’s lots happening at Café Lagarto this month. As well as their regular daily breakfast, brunch and lunch meals on offer, the café hosts very popular monthly 3-course dinner events featuring cuisines from around the world on the second Friday of every month.
On Friday 14th July, why not imagine yourself dining on the Champs-Elysees for a night, by celebrating Bastille Day with their specially created menu. Book now so you don’t miss out.
Live music on Sunday this month features Old Semeil on Sunday 16th July. Old Semeil (Gav) is a singer-songwriter from Mt Glorious. He’s been making music for the last 10 years as both singer/guitarist of West End rabble-rousers ‘The Mouldy Lovers’ and as leader of the alt-folk collective ‘Old Semeil’.

On Sunday 23rd July, be entertained over lunch listening to Danny Mose and Friends. Danny learnt to sing formally with the church choir and is self-taught, bringing a smooth and soulful style to your lunch experience. Both performances commence at 10am – 1pm and all you need to do is book a table for lunch. No cover charge applies.
If you’re into Jazz, don’t forget to book for dinner on the last Saturday of every month for Saturday Night Jazz - three hours of live jazz music featuring professional musicians, many who are local and with many years of experience. You can grab a special cocktail, a wine, beer or cider and your choice of 4 gourmet platters to pre-order. The café has already featured a great line-up of musicians this year with many more to come. All Saturday Night Jazz performances are either a trio or a quartet – they choose who to jam with on the night.
On Saturday 29th July, don’t miss Gemini Blue’s repertoire of popular R&B songs of the 70’s and 80’s, easy listening jazz and blues favourites. The band’s intimate and diverse style has been enjoyed by Brisbane audiences for about two decades.
For bookings call 3289 3550, or online at www.cafelagarto.com.au and complete the booking form on the events page. Doors open at 6pm until 10pm, $15 cover charge per person. Don’t forget to pre-order platters prior to the evening.
