FOR COMMUNITIES

FOR NONPROFITS

We simplify the charitable giving process with straightforward fund establishment and charitable gift management.

We partner with financial and legal advisors to help individuals incorporate philanthropic goals in their estate plans.

We help communities of all sizes achieve their goals through permanently endowed funds called Community Savings Accounts, which are invested with the SDCF and managed by a local board of directors.

We support charitable and nonprofit organizations throughout the state by offering grant opportunities, establishing agency endowment funds and providing related administrative support.

To establish the SDCF, the McKnight Foundation and 3M Corporation issued a $5 million challenge grant to the state of South Dakota. The grant memorialized the life of South Dakota native William L. McKnight, a former CEO of the 3M Corporation and founder of the McKnight Foundation. The state of South Dakota committed $2 million, and within twelve months, SDCF leadership raised the additional $3 million from private donors to fulfill the challenge grant.

Grants

Today, the SDCF, a public nonprofit organization, holds approximately $317 million in total assets and manages 925 funds. The earnings from those funds support charitable needs and causes throughout the state. With the continued generosity of South Dakotans and solid investment returns, the SDCF will continue to serve individuals, families and communities across the state for generations to come.

Planned Giving

Providing for Yourself, Your Loved Ones and Your Legacy Planned giving is a way for you to make a gift to your favorite charitable causes. The right planned gift can provide you and your loved ones with tax and income benefits.

Spring is a new beginning and a good opportunity to set goals for:

1. Yourself 2. Your Loved Ones 3. Your Community and

Charitable gift and estate planning strategies provide you with the options to do all three! We can help you determine the best strategies based on your goals and desires.

2. Strategies to Provide 1. Strategies to Provide for Yourself

Many of our friends are seeking ways to supplement their retirement income. Charitable life income plans such as the charitable gift annuity and the charitable remainder trust are two excellent options worth considering. • Take cash or a low-incomeproducing asset and convert it into lifetime payments. • You will receive a charitable income tax deduction and can avoid all or a portion of the capital gains tax. • Charities you choose will use the remaining value to continue their important work. 3

Planned Giving

for Your Loved Ones

Are you looking for a way to provide an appropriate inheritance for your heirs without giving them too much too soon? Consider the benefits of a charitable remainder trust or charitable lead trust. • Determine the amount and timing of your heirs’ inheritance. • Provide for family during your lifetime or through your estate. • A charitable remainder trust can make payments to your heirs for their lives or a term of years. • A charitable lead trust pays income to the charities you choose for a term of years and then leaves a lump-sum inheritance to your heirs.

3. Strategies to Provide

for Your Community and Favorite Causes

There are simple, no-cost strategies you can use to support your community and favorite charitable organizations. • Retirement Assets: You can name us as a beneficiary of your retirement plan and remove a highly taxable asset from your estate. • Life Insurance: Naming us as a beneficiary of an uneeded life insurance policy removes the policy from your estate and costs you nothing out of pocket. • POD/TOD: Do you own mutual funds, securities or a checking, savings or CD account and would like to benefit your favorite causes? You can leave all or a portion of your account by designating us as the payable on death (POD) or transferable on death (TOD) beneficiary. and then leave a lump-sum inheritance to your heirs.

Investing in South Dakota’s Future The South Dakota Community Foundation’s Objective

The goal of the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) is to make giving back simple and effective by providing trustworthy guidance and investment management.

As investment returns accumulate, the fund can continue to impact South Dakotans forever. We put the power of endowment to work for good.

Nonprofit Organizations: In 2018, nonprofits received

Bill in his younger days. Mr. Matousek will always be remembered for his generosity to the Tripp County community.

Bill Matousek : For Love of Community Matousek Tripp County Historical Fund to benefit the Tripp Co. Historical Society through the TCCF in perpetuity.

Pictured above is Bill with his life partner, Marjory Calderia. Because of their generosity, their endowment with SDCF will provide funding to the Tripp County community for years to come.

To those who knew him, Bill Matousek was the epitome of generosity. Betterment of the Tripp County community was extremely important to him. If there was a cause in the area that was in need, Bill was the first to commit to helping in any way he could. Through careful estate planning, Bill was able to establish and add to an existing fund at the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF). The William J. Matousek & Marjory E. Calderia Fund, under the direction of the Tripp Co. Community Foundation (TCCF), will be used for a variety of community organization needs in the Tripp County area. He also established the William J.

“With the funds given for the benefit of the Tripp County Historical Society, they will be able to promote the history of our area with less concern regarding expenses,” said Dawn Covey, friend and board member of the TCCF. “Bill loved history and it was important to him that the history of the Tripp County area be preserved.” Bill was one of the founding board members of the TCCF and served as Chairman until 2017. “There was no greater supporter of the Tripp County community than Bill. No philanthropic effort was too big or small for him to tackle,” said Covey. Bill was very proud of his roots in the area and especially of his alma mater, Winner High School! Bill was the 1952 Homecoming Warrior and every year was proud to attend roll call for the class of 1953. Everyone remembers him as the voice of the TCCF, as each year he took liberties with the microphone at roll call to put a plug in for the local Foundation. In 2017, Bill was humbled and honored to be selected as the

WHS Homecoming Parade Marshal. “Everything Bill did, he did quietly, behind the scenes, not looking for self-promotion or fame,” said Covey. “He did these things because of his great compassion to help others and high hopes for the future of our community. He will be greatly missed by all of his friends in the Tripp County area.” Through his estate planning in partnership with SDCF, Bill’s care and generosity will live on forever. “Bill was a great example to the board members of the Tripp County Community Foundation,” said Keith Goodhope, former TCCF board member and executor to Matousek’s estate. “His philanthropy locally inspired the rest of us to do better.” zx

Gary & Connie Grittner :

Supporting Community and Education of Students The Gary and Connie Grittner story begins like many others. They were both born in Central Minnesota. Neither family had money for college, but both Gary and Connie were strongly encouraged to get an education, and both achieved advanced degrees. Working their way through college taught them the value of hard work and the understanding that saving would pay off later in life. Indeed, planning for their retirement and a goal of financial independence began the first day of their marriage. Gary served in the Navy and retired after 27 years of active and reserve service. Both Gary and Connie served in the civil service at a Defense Department research laboratory. They elected to retire early after the United States won the Cold War. Seeking a community in which to retire, they moved to Fort Pierre, enthralled by the rich history of the area and the opportunity for great recreational experiences. Enjoying their free time, they began looking for volunteer opportunities. Based largely on their work experience, the Grittners felt that insufficient resources are being invested in gifted young people, a cohort that will likely provide much of the leadership of the country in the future. They started exploring opportunities to impact the education of young students. The Grittners sought a financial entity that could protect their assets and ensure their legacy while providing flexibility in making charitable donations at appropriate opportunities. While the Grittners funded scholarships and endowments in Minnesota in the past, these entities did not meet the Grittner’s needs. The Grittners established a donor advised fund with SDCF, allowing them to make capital additions at the donor’s discretion and charitable disbursements for a range of educational activities. In 2011, the Grittners made a $1 million commitment to their SDCF endowment. Priorities include summer

camp tuition at the South Dakota School of Mines for high school STEM students; monthly books for Stanley and Hughes County children from birth to age five through the United Way and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library; a laser cutting machine for a high school engineering classroom; the first fort in Fort Pierre in 150 years; a matching grant for STEM projects at a middle school; a sponsorship of four bronze statues in the Pierre Trail of Governors; matching grants to the Greater Lyman Foundation; a contribution to rehabilitate the Pat Duffy Community Center in Fort Pierre; and support to rehabilitate the 1906 train depot in Fort Pierre. While spending time volunteering with local service organizations and donating to various causes, Gary and Connie also enjoy their retirement. Practicing what they preach with respect to reading, they subscribe to seven newspapers, many magazines and try to read several books each per month. They have traveled to all 50 states, all seven continents, have been on a dozen cruises, and use their RVs frequently. Their only restriction to foreign travel occurs when blood banks refuse donations from visitors to certain countries, since Gary is a “210 pint and counting” blood donor. They enjoy working their South Dakota properties to improve the habitat for pheasants, and host friends and family during hunting season. Summertime brings motorcycling, boating, and fishing, with northern pike their favorite fish to eat. Keeping physically and mentally active is important to them. Philanthropists have many different goals and objectives, but the flexible contribution and distribution policies of the SDCF, along with ensuring a secure post death legacy, was an ideal match for the Grittners. zx

If you would like to leave a legacy through charitable giving, please call the South Dakota Community Foundation at 800.888.1842 or visit SDCommunityFoundation.org. We would be honored to assist you in reaching your charitable goals. 9

Jeff and Linda Erickson : Building a Legacy of Giving

In both family and career, Jeff and Linda Erickson’s life together may best be described in the words of Henry David Thoreau.

“Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” Or as Jeff says,

“Dream big, but work small,” words he still lives by today. Their busy lives started when they met as student-athletes on the campus of Northern State University where Jeff played football and Linda played both basketball and softball. Both raised by ambitious, hardworking parents, Jeff and Linda always focused on the task at hand. “Our parents felt all work has value. No task is beneath your effort to do it well”, said Jeff. After graduating, Jeff began his banking career in Spearfish, where Linda also finished her degree in Elementary Education at Black Hills State University. Jeff’s career would take them to many communities in and around South Dakota. Starting in 1995 he spent 15 years as CEO of Great Western Bank in Watertown. As the bank grew, they moved to Sioux Falls in 2006 where they currently reside. Great Western Bank was sold in 2008 and Jeff retired as CEO of the bank in 2010. Linda taught school in Spearfish and Chamberlain and then served as the Education Coordinator of the Redlin Art Center for 7+ years in Watertown while the couple raised their four children. Now, as they welcome their twelfth grandchild, they are defining what success means for their family, both now and long into the future. “We enjoy having the opportunity to share the fruits of our labor with others and to build a legacy of giving for our kids and our grandkids. I hope they see that our work had a purpose, and still does,” Erickson remarked. “Our family has always been our primary focus, and we want them to be involved in how our giving can change lives and make a difference in the world,” Linda Erickson added. 11

Donor Spotlight: Ericksons

Jeff, current SDCF Board Chairman and his wife, Linda have created a lasting legacy of giving through the Jeff and Linda Erickson Family Fund.

They started their philanthropic work with the Foundation more than ten years ago through the establishment of a family donor-advised fund that would later involve their children and grandchildren. “When the bank sold, Linda and I decided that we wanted to build an endowment that would allow us to continue the giving we had done during our careers,” Erickson said. “We were familiar with the South Dakota Community Foundation. We appreciated how it was managed,

respected the strong leadership of their board of directors, and recognized that their vision aligned well with ours,” he added. A few years later Erickson was elected to the SDCF Board of Directors and currently serves as Board Chair, carrying on the business model that first drew his attention to the organization. “The problem with loving your work is you never really retire,” Jeff Erickson said. Currently, Jeff is a partner in American Bank & Trust, Chairman of the Schwan’s Company Board of Directors, the Chairman of his Family Office and the manager of multiple additional LLC’s. “The upside of our continued effort is that we can expand our charitable goals and involve our kids and grandkids at an early age,” he added. With assets of the Jeff and Linda Erickson Family Fund already exceeding $3.5 million, Jeff and Linda intend to, along with their children and grandchildren, distribute $200,000 or more annually through their fund and continue the family’s philanthropic mission for multiple generations. Jeff and Linda have given a great deal of thought to the types of organizations that they want this money to go to in the future

and have included a list of appropriate charities in their fund documents. “Through our planning, our children and grandchildren will be able to give significantly to charities and nonprofits that our family agrees we want to support now and going forward,” Linda Erickson said. “It is rewarding to see the benefits experienced by the programs receiving funds,” she added. Jeff agreed, “By involving our kids, we are teaching them to be giving and, we are assured that the needs of the agencies we support will continue to be met in the future.” Stephanie Judson, Foundation president, pointed out the unique aspects of the Erickson’s giving to the SDCF. In addition to the sheer level of their generosity, they have used a combination of appreciated stock and other assets that allow personal tax savings, as well as the maximum benefit to the Foundation. “It has been my pleasure to work with Jeff and Linda as they achieve this milestone in giving. Their family tree has a new limb because of Jeff and Linda’s generosity,” Judson said. She added, “That limb will only be strengthened by the generations ahead as they continue what Jeff and Linda started. zx

“We were excited to partner with the South Dakota Community Foundation to provide students in elementary, middle and high school with programming that focuses on the importance of earning, saving, investing, budgeting and other key financial topics,” said Kayla Eitreim, President, Junior Achievement of South Dakota. “Junior

exposing students to leaders in their community, they are learning about possible job choices available in South Dakota and illustrating how they can have both a great career and life while remaining in-state. Recent research conducted by JA USA shows that 90%

of the JA alumni are confident in their ability to manage money.

Junior Achievement of South Dakota is also first in the nation in terms of volunteer retention. They have been able to retain over 74% of their volunteers each year. Junior Achievement of South Dakota plans to continue offering financial literacy programming for years to come. More school districts have begun the work necessary to implement this valuable programming. zx

“Financial literacy courses are no longer just an addon in today’s student curriculum. Financial literacy is a muchneeded core skill for everyone,” says Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer.

“We were proud to play a part in Junior Achievement’s initiative to ensure that all our students experience success.” 35

The Fairy Godmother’s Fund Ten Years and Counting

A STRONG START Established in 2009 to address immediate, short-term critical needs of our state’s women with limited resources, the Fairy Godmother’s Fund is turning ten. The fund began with $11,000 in donations from hundreds of women attending a conference in Pierre which included $5,000 from the South Dakota Community Foundation. With that strong beginning, the fund has continued to grow, thanks to our generous donors. In the past 10 years, nearly $42,000 has been granted to 81 women in South Dakota.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Over the years, grants from the fund have benefited women in a variety of ways including: • Purchasing an iPad for a woman with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities to use at work and for budgetary, banking and other daily tasks. • Providing funds for a student during a difficult semester at one of our state’s technical institutes. She was able to graduate with degree in hand. • Assisting with the adoption of a medical alert dog to help a woman with diabetes and a new diagnosis of epilepsy.

Even miracles take a little time. --Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother

A CARING COUNCIL Fund recipients are referred to the South Dakota Community Foundation by nonprofits or community members that have knowledge of the woman’s circumstances. Self-referrals are not accepted. There are no grant applications, no long forms or dense paperwork to fill out. This process could not work without the Fairy Godmother’s Fund’s Advisory Council. These women, representing areas across our state, volunteer their time to ensure funds are paid to those with the most pressing needs throughout the year. Many thanks to our past and current council members.

DONORS OFFER A RAY OF HOPE….. These small grants make a big difference in the lives of recipients. Please consider supporting this worthwhile program. Through your contribution to the Fairy Godmother’s Fund, you can help the women of South Dakota. Your involvement will ensure that this is a never-ending story of people helping people. zx

CONTRIBUTIONS CAN BE SENT TO: Fairy Godmother’s Fund South Dakota Community Foundation 1714 N Lincoln Ave., P.O. Box 296 • Pierre, SD 57501-0296 or donate on-line at SDCommunityFoundation.org/FGM Fairy Godmother’s Fund

3. Nonprofit Savings Account Grants Immediate and Future Support for Nonprofits The SDCF is committed to strengthening nonprofits in our state. We recognize the value of committed staff and volunteers and understand the importance of consistent funding to support their work. We look forward to partnering with interested nonprofits and their supporters to build endowment funds that will support their mission now and in years to come. Organizations are selected through a competitive application process and receive a $20,000 challenge grant from the SDCF when they successfully raise $80,000. The challenge grants will create new designated funds for each of the successful applicants. An added benefit of this program is that administrative burdens are removed from nonprofits. The SDCF handles all donor contribution receipts, commingles contributions for investment purposes and completes all necessary tax filings and audits.

Community Savings Accounts A Lasting Community Impact The SDCF has partnered with almost 80 communities across South Dakota to form Community Savings Accounts (CSA). A CSA provides current, past and future residents with the opportunity to give back to the town they call home. With SDCF’s careful investment, a community’s CSA will continue to grow and support annual awards and grants in perpetuity ensuring the town continues to thrive for years to come. CSAs are under the control of a local board of directors. The board directs fundraising efforts and distribution of available funds. Under this local control, the money raised in your community, stays in your community.

Faith: Building a Foundation It can be said that small town America was built on faith: faith in the good earth, faith in good neighbors, and faith placed on the value of a handshake. And so it is with the community of FAITH, South Dakota. It’s a place where the dinosaurs roamed, and the cattle still thrive. It’s a place where you can stop for a tank of gas and leave having met a new friend. It’s a great place to grow up, and an even better place to raise a family. Everybody knows everybody and they are willing to help when there’s a need to be filled. When the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) approached the leaders of Faith with a challenge, they couldn’t turn it down. “When a group like the SDCF puts an offer on the table to raise money for a community savings account (CSA), we knew we needed to jump on it. Between the match grant and the assistance from the SDCF, the challenge offered great possibility for our town. We felt it was the right thing to do in order to help our community grow and prosper,” said Shalyn Hawley, Faith Area Community Foundation (FACF) board member.

This iron sign, made by local resident Zane King welcomes travelers into Faith.

Several volunteers stepped forward and scheduled a dinner for community members wanting to learn more about the opportunity. Beth Massa, Director of Foundation Relations for SDCF attended the meeting. Ray Smith, one of the founding members of the Philip Area Community Foundation, was also invited to attend and share his experiences. “It was a good time for me to reflect on the success of our CSA and what it has meant to the community of Philip. Many of the projects we have funded never would have happened without the financial help of the Philip Area Community Foundation. Each organization that has approached us with a project is a great asset to our community, and we are happy to help them be successful in their goals. It was exciting to see a town like Faith make a long-term investment in the future of their community through the creation of a CSA.” Dana Keffeler of Enning and one of the founding volunteers of the FACF shared her experiences in dealing with the SDCF through a permanent endowment fund for the Rural Meade Ambulance Service. Before the evening was over, nine residents of Faith stepped up to be part of the Advisory Board and made the first contributions to the fund. They know they have work ahead but realize this is the perfect way to help sustain organizations and complete projects in the community. Small communities do not have many funding sources and the FACF helps fill the gaps.

Jim Selby and Ross Fees split the poker tournament winnings at Game Night.

When Shalyn and her husband were preparing to move from Gillette to Faith several years ago, she saw a quote on a billboard stating, “Home isn’t just a place, it’s a feeling”. Seeing that reaffirmed her choice in moving back home as the right thing to do. CSA Spotlight

“When Beth and Ray came to talk to us, I thought of that quote and all the reasons it feels right to be back living in Faith. I also knew that starting the CSA was the right thing to do.” The group of volunteers knew the first thing to do was to involve more individuals in the area. They scheduled a community-wide family game night, and people showed up. The evening started with a free-will donation supper of tacos and nachos, provided by the Faith Community Commerce and Development. Entry fees were charged to compete in poker, cornhole and dice. It was a fun, competitive and energetic group, and everyone left with a good feeling and a little more knowledge about the CSA concept. The Advisory Board had a Super Bowl fundraiser, and a summer event is planned for June 8th to include a street dance. Every chance they have, they educate community members on the CSA and the importance of a perpetual stream of revenue to assist with projects and programs. They developed a mission statement that explains why they are passionate about the opportunity and process: The Faith Area Community Foundation is focused and committed to enriching the lives of our community members by establishing sustainable funds dedicated to enhancing the cultural, educational, social, and economic aspects of our community while inspiring future generations to do the same.

Pictured to the left: Amy Neff, Jeff Johnson and Lynn Williams play corn hole at the Family Game night. The event was held as a fundraiser for the newly formed Faith Area Community Foundation.

Pictured to the right: Misty Williams, Wendy Blunt, Dana Keffeler, Krissy Johnson and Lynn Halligan play dice at Game Night.

Looking into the future 50 years from now, the goal of community members is for Faith to maintain its small-town charm but have the capacity to keep up with the times. Their CSA will be a life-line for future success of these endeavors. They know this will be essential to attract and keep people who want to live and raise their families in small town America, this place and feeling they are happy to call HOME. zx

The first statewide South Dakota Day of Giving was held this year on Giving Tuesday, November 27th. Many of the almost 80 community savings accounts (CSA) the South Dakota Community Foundation partners with participated in the exciting day through social media campaigns, calls and letters to donors, and many more activities.

$5,250 from the Day of Giving prize pool. Congratulations to their board on the success of their efforts!

To highlight just a few, the Herreid Community Foundation board put articles in the paper, made over 60 phone calls to past donors and raised over $9,000 from promotion of the day. A special thank you to past board chair, Bruce Brandner and his wife, LeeAnn. The time, talent and treasure they have provided is immeasurable to the community of Herreid. Thank you.

Thank you to those who gave generously and to all the volunteer board members who took time to participate and raise awareness for their local foundations. You make a difference.

The Sisseton Community Foundation sent letters to their donors and was active on social media. Their CSA raised over $4,500 from donors and won
