CHAIRMAN’S LETTER Year 2012 was a milestone year for the South Dakota Community Foundation. First we demonstrated great strength in our regular activities of raising funds, managing those funds and supporting South Dakota needs through grants in our regular ambitious and vigorous manner. We also excelled in further extending our outreach throughout the state through our Community Savings Account program, numerous speaking engagements and general good relations with donors and grant recipients. In October we took time to look back and know the founders and builders of our foundation. We were honored to have Kate Wolford, President of the William McKnight Foundation, and Mike Magnuson and Keith Kelble plant managers of 3M’s two South Dakota manufacturing plants join us in Brookings for our 25th year anniversary celebration. Thirty-nine founding and former board members also returned to celebrate our 25 years of accomplishments. We had staff changes and added a staff position. The most significant change was Bob Sutton’s departure. Bob, only our second president, provided excellent leadership during his 10 years of commitment to our foundation. We wish him continued success as he continues to further his career. Stephanie Judson, a 16 year employee, agreed to take on the challenge of leading our foundation going forward. We welcome Stephanie into her leadership position with our board’s support and confidence. It is truly an honor for me to serve in the chair position. The South Dakota Community Foundation helps us grow our communities and develop future generations of South Dakotans. It also provides a vehicle to give back to our state for those of us with the capacity and desire to do so. I’m confident that South Dakotans will advance the state significantly during the next 25 years and that the SDCF will be a key contributor to that success. Thank you. Al Kurtenbach Chairman

PRESIDENT’S REPORT As I sit down to write my first President’s letter my enthusiasm is tempered by a bit of anxiety. Anxiety that is fueled by all of the great work the Foundation has been a part of and also by all that we have remaining to do. I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to lead this organization as we find out together what the future holds. The South Dakota Community Foundation saw silver in 2012, celebrating 25 years of service to South Dakota. I came to work for the Foundation in January of 1997, just months before we would celebrate the Foundation’s 10th Anniversary. Gracious donors and friends of the Foundation, Dale and Pat Larson, hosted a gala to commemorate that great day. Founding Executive Director, Bernie Christenson, and the Board of Directors, Chaired by Paul Christen, gathered in Brookings, SD, where the Foundation was first announced. There was much to celebrate. We had doubled in size in those first ten years, the endowment totaling just over $20 million. In addition to our unrestricted grant program, we managed roughly 30 endowment funds. We also used the occasion to announce a challenge grant opportunity for ten South Dakota communities—officially launching our Community Savings Account program. We could only imagine how the next 15 years would unfold. Every great milestone gives an organization a chance to celebrate accomplishments and look forward to what the future holds, and our 25th anniversary is no different. Back in Brookings, again as guests of the Larson family at the incredible Children’s Museum of South Dakota, current and past board members, spouses and staff gathered again to mark the momentous occasion. President Bob Sutton introduced honored guests on the eve of what would be his last board meeting and announced the accomplishments of the Foundation’s first 25 years. Representatives from the 3M Corporation and the McKnight Foundation were on hand to celebrate with the organization they helped to create back in 1987. Today, we manage assets totaling over $160 million and funds numbering more than 570. We have had the opportunity to award more than $60 million dollars to nonprofits and charities across the state, reaching every county in South Dakota. We boast a Community Savings Account program that now holds over $18 million for the benefit of 70 communities. We operate a robust scholarship program that awards more than $365,000 to deserving young students across South Dakota. Most importantly, we have the great honor of partnering with an increasing number of donors, and organizations to help them achieve their philanthropic goals and missions. Yet during the celebration, I couldn’t help but think—what is next? Our 25th anniversary is not only a cause for celebration, but also for reflection and planning. As I write my first President’s letter, I wonder what I will be reporting on in my tenth or twentieth. Strategic planning is underway and a course is being set. I believe some of the answers lie in the past. Pillars such as strong board leadership, a committed donor base, and a dedicated staff will play key roles in the future success of the Foundation. If experience has taught me one thing, it is to think beyond what we can plan. The rest of the answers lie in the future, and I can’t wait! Sincerely, Stephanie Judson President

THE MICKELSON FUND - A Tradition of Giving The Mickelson Fund, a memorial to George S. Mickelson, was created in June, 1993, the result of significant gifts given to the Mickelson family following the plane crash that claimed his life in April, 1993. Placing these gifts in a permanent fund at the South Dakota Community Foundation was a fitting tribute because George and his friends and advisers were instrumental in the creation of the South Dakota Community Foundation. Nearly 4,000 memorial gifts were directed to this fund. They ranged from five dollars to $15,000, totaling nearly $300,000, and the majority of them were from South Dakotans. Since that time, there have been other contributions to the Mickelson Fund by family and friends. To date, eighty-four grants have been disbursed from The Mickelson Fund, ranging from $200 to $20,000. This is a donor-advised fund and the recipients are determined by the Mickelson family. The tradition of recipients selected has been to honor institutions of higher learning and those attending such institutions, although there have been a variety of other needs selected. All recipients were South Dakota citizens or institutions. The Mickelson family will always have strong roots in the South Dakota Community Foundation. Linda served on Bernie Christenson, Past SDCF Executive Director and Paul Christen, Past Board the South Dakota Community Foundation board and Chairman receive a check from Linda Mickelson Graham to establish the Mickelson Family chaired the grantmaking committee. Son Mark followed Fund. her tenure by serving on the board as well, including two years as chairman. The Mickelson family is supportive of the SDCF and of this fund. The fund is permanent, it is a great avenue for charitable giving, and the hope is for future generations to donate and to have a part in the disbursement of funds.

CSA SUCCESS – It’s All About Community in Wall! Wall Drug is known worldwide for free ice water, amazing donuts, unique attractions and artifacts, and wonderful souvenirs. That’s not all that makes Wall a special place in South Dakota. The residents who live, work, and play in this city have made sure to develop much more than a travel destination. And they have done so through philanthropy. In 2012, the Wall community was honored as South Dakota’s Outstanding Philanthropic Community of the Year. This was, in part, thanks to The First Interstate Greater Wall Area Fund, the local Community Savings Account. They are not just any CSA, but one of the first ever established under the South Dakota Community Foundation umbrella. “I enjoy being a part of an organization that is able to support and give back to our community,” said Brett Blasius, Badlands Market President of First Interstate Bank in Wall and local CSA Chair. “Our board members all serve on a volunteer basis not for recognition, but to make Wall a better place for us to live and raise our families.” The South Dakota Community Foundation has been working with Wall since 1989 when the community was issued a challenge to raise $137,500 to be matched by the McKnight Foundation. The community, along with the support of First Western Bank, was successful in meeting the challenge and a permanent endowment fund totaling over $275,000 was

established in 1995. Since that time, through the generosity of Wall residents, the fund has grown to over $360,000. Since 1997, over $345,000 has been given back to local nonprofit groups and organizations working for the benefit of the city. Projects they have been a part of include: The Wall High School gymnasium, Wall Food Pantry backpack program, Wall Rodeo Arena and Fairgrounds improvements, City pool renovations, the re-imaging of Main Street and many others. Their success lies in the fundamental framework of the CSA concept. Only a small portion of the fund’s value is made available to distribute annually. Today, they are a $5,000 grant away from giving back more money to the community than they have raised, and the fund is still valued at over $421,000! This model is working to perfection in Wall, where strong community support, local leadership, and a belief in a bright future have sparked a philanthropic frenzy. There is no doubt they were deserving of their 2012 recognition and that the future is bright for Wall, S.D. “The overwhelming support from our local community is a constant reminder that many Wall residents are committed to making our community a better place to live,” continued Blasius. “It is important to understand that the amenities and luxuries we enjoy on a daily basis are the result of many peoples generosity in the past. We appreciate all of our residents and businesses for their support over the years.”

CITIBANK – Commitment to SDCF Bankers are typically a pretty cautious bunch. So it’s not all that surprising that Citibank executives thought long and hard before pledging $500,000 at the request of Governor George Mickelson to become a founding donor and help launch the South Dakota Community Foundation.

her people – first Christenson, then Bob Sutton, and now Stephanie Judson. Mix in a blue-chip and financially savvy board of directors, market-topping financial returns, low investment costs, generous donors and a high-performing staff, and it’s little wonder why SDCF’s assets have rocketed past $135 million.

Never before had Citi given money to a foundation with no strings attached. But Mickelson and SDCF President Bernie Christenson made compelling and persuasive arguments to Citibank, urging the company’s involvement.

Pretty remarkable for a flyover state with just 814,000 residents scattered across 77,122 square miles of open prairie.

“The state has been good to us,” Citibank President Fred Winkler told an audience during a ceremony on a sunny morning at Mount Rushmore National Memorial in 1988. “We want to make a contribution in return. And we believe in the governor’s vision for improving the quality of life in South Dakota. We have faith in him and in the state.” A quarter century later, Citi still has full faith and confidence in the South Dakota Community Foundation. The contribution to help capitalize the foundation continues to rank as the single largest grant Citi has made to a South Dakota nonprofit organization since establishing its flagship credit card facility in Sioux Falls in 1981, matching a later $500,000 gift for renovations at Mount Rushmore. Citi has continued to invest in the South Dakota Community Foundation, adding nearly $1 million to its accounts in recent years. The foundation has been blessed to be steered by talented leaders with an unwavering passion for South Dakota and

Thanks to the McKnight Foundation of Minneapolis, grants from earnings on Citi’s donor-advised fund at the South Dakota Community Foundation are matched dollar-for-dollar – turning a $5,000 grant, for example, into $10,000. Some of the most memorable grants over the years have centered around education. Citi/SDCF contributions of more than $500,000 from 1997 through 2005 helped bring Classroom, Inc., a software simulation program whose virtual workplaces show students the direct link between school and their future, to classrooms across South Dakota. Two-thirds of Citi’s $250,000 contribution to help build a new business school at the University of South Dakota came from endowed funds held with SDCF, as did a $50,000 contribution to help launch a state-run microloan program. When a drive began to build a new and badly needed Governor’s Residence in Pierre with private funding, Citi tapped its SDCF funds to chip in $150,000. Certainly, not all grants from Citi’s funds with SDCF are large or headline making. Citibank’s bulging South Dakota Community Foundation files are filled with 25 years’ worth of details of smaller grants that benefited a variety of causes, including 4-H, FFA, South Dakota’s Teacher of the Year, arts programming, college scholarships, and training for nonprofits to increase their capacity and effectiveness. Citi has enjoyed a wonderful partnership with the South Dakota Community Foundation and its staff over the past quarter century, sharing a goal of providing critical funding to charitable and nonprofit causes in this state for perpetuity. Here’s to the next 25 years! Jerry Nachtigal, SVP - Public Affairs at Citibank

DONALD LOUIS KENNEDY – Creating a Legacy for Tripp Donald Louis Kennedy passed away on February 25, 2012. He was a bachelor, farmer and Iowa native who found a new home in Tripp, S.D. as a young man. Don’s hard work was recently the benefit of the Tripp Community and future Tripp-Delmont High School students when Mr. Kennedy’s estate named them as beneficiaries in his Will. But this gift may have gone unrealized if not for the serendipitous blizzard that changed the future of a community and a philanthropic vehicle that made giving back to Tripp a breeze. “I had planned on attending a wrestling tournament in Aberdeen that day,” recalled Jim Haar, an attorney in Tripp. “Bernice [Don’s only sister] had called hoping that I would meet with the two of them to discuss Don’s philanthropic goals.” Not often the case with blizzards in South Dakota, this one in particular had positive implications for the small farming community. While the storm did not affect the day-to-day business of Tripp, travel conditions up north were not favorable, and Mr. Haar opted to stay home. “If it wasn’t for that snowstorm, I would not have been home to take that original call from Bernice,” continued Haar. “Together, we discussed giving options with Mr. Kennedy, including the option of giving to the Tripp Area Community Foundation. Mr. Kennedy had a number of groups, organizations and individuals in town that he wanted to help.” With all of his goals and wishes in place, all that remained was for the document to be drafted and finalized with a signature from Mr. Kennedy. That was, until, tragedy struck the next day.

“Bernice had called the next day asking if I was able to have Don sign the paper’s,” said Haar. “After I told her that I had not, she let me know that Don passed away.” With a document not yet legal, Bernice would be the heir to Don’s estate. “She came right out and told me that we know what he wanted to do, so let’s do it,” said Haar. With that, $400,000 was gifted to the Tripp Area Community Foundation and $400,000 was used to establish the Don Kennedy Memorial Scholarship Fund. These funds will directly benefit the Tripp Community and Tripp-Delmont High School students. The future for Tripp just got a lot brighter thanks to Donald Kennedy and his sister Bernice Peterson. Over the next 50 years, an estimated $101 billion will be transferred from one generation to the next in South Dakota. If not for a chance snowstorm, a caring, philanthropic-minded sister, and a local leader with knowledge of the giving options in Tripp, Don’s very generous gift may have gone un-realized in his community. Philanthropic planning and remembering your local community can make a significant difference in the sustainability and growth of rural South Dakota. Thank you to Donald Kennedy and Bernice Peterson for your generosity and to all of those who work hard for, and give back to, our state every day!

Tripp, S.D. attorney Jim Haar presents an $800,000 check to Dwight Bordewyk (center) and Wilmer Herr (right) on behalf of Don Kennedy’s estate. $400,000 was used to form the Kennedy Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will benefit Tripp-Delmont High School graduates. The other half was donated to the Tripp Area Community Foundation.

THE GARY AND CONNIE GRITTNER FUND – Their Legacy Starts Now One might think that a legacy is something you leave, but I would argue that a legacy is something you build and for Gary and Connie Grittner, that legacy is being built right now. Whether one is talking about their volunteer commitments or their generous financial support to the community they call home, the communities of Pierre and Fort Pierre benefit every day from the legacy Gary and Connie have built, a legacy that will live on forever. Upon their retirement less than a decade ago, Gary and Connie Grittner decided to relocate from the suburbs of Washington, D.C. to Fort Pierre, SD. The South Dakota Community Foundation came to know the Grittner’s shortly after their arrival in the community. Gary and Connie’s passion for history and commitment to education were immediately evident. They volunteered countless hours in the community and became involved in several local community projects and organizations. Their desire to make a difference in the lives that follow led them to make provisions to include the South Dakota Community Foundation in their estate to provide funds to support their passions long into the future. In October of 2012, the Grittner’s made the decision to start leaving their financial legacy now by announcing a $1 million gift to the South Dakota Community Foundation. The Grittners have supported several historical organizations in the community, including the Verendrye Museum and the Bring the Depot Home project in Fort Pierre. A portion of their initial gift continues to honor South Dakota’s rich history. The Grittners have designated funds to support the Trail of Governors

project in Pierre, and to pursue the construction of a fort structure in the community of Fort Pierre. Gary and Connie have also issued a challenge to the Pierre-Fort Pierre Community Foundation. The Grittners have committed up to $25,000 if the board of directors can raise $50,000 in two years. Their hope is to raise the community’s awareness of the Pierre-Fort Pierre Community Foundation and to inspire donors to give back to support area charitable and nonprofit causes. The additional $75,000 will provide additional grant funds to be awarded annually in the Pierre-Fort Pierre community. The Grittners are strong advocates for education and have provided funds to support learning opportunities for gifted children in grades K-12. They look forward to working with state and local education officials to develop and expand gifted programs in South Dakota. Gary had this to say of their recent gift to the Foundation, “Connie and I love South Dakota and we enjoy being a part of this community. We chose to partner with the South Dakota Community Foundation because of their longevity and their strong reputation. We also found great satisfaction in knowing that our gifts would provide funding to projects we support forever. We hope others will follow our example and give back to support their community as well.” The South Dakota Community Foundation is honored to be a part of Gary and Connie Grittner’s legacy—a legacy that won’t wait to be left.
