COURAGE OF CASTLEWOOD

MARCH 2023

Welcome to the March issue of SDPB magazine!

Hundreds of student-athletes, playing seventytwo games, at six arenas in five cities, over ten wonderful days - that is the high school basketball state championships in South Dakota. South Dakotans travel en masse to see these games in person or watch on SPDB. Viewers who live out of state watch their family, friends, and hometown teams compete online at SDPB.org. SDPB averages online viewers from nearly every state and around 12 foreign countries for basketball in March.

This month's cover story is about the tornado that devastated Castlewood along with its high-school gymnasium. A gym that has seen state champions run the hardwood is a community's heartbeat. This story, paired with the tournaments, brings you the ups and downs of high-school basketball.

March is Women's History Month. Multiple programs across PBS, including SDPB's In the Moment, will highlight the contributions and struggles that brought us to where we are today. This month, Dakota Life makes a trip to Parkston. This dynamic community in south central South Dakota has a rich history of supporting one another, which you will see in the story "The Christmas Cook." Twenty-Four Seven coverage of the legislature nears its long, final days, and you can catch every minute live online at SD.net.

March is the busiest and most challenging month for SDPB's crew, yet one of the most rewarding. Thanks for joining us on this journey. We couldn't do this without you!

Thank you for being a member of SDPB. You are appreciated.

C OURAGE OF ASTLEWOOD

On May 12th, 2022, a tornado tore through the South Dakota town of Castlewood. Among the wreckage was the school. The F2 tornado touched down on the south end of Castlewood and tore through the middle of the school, destroying eight classrooms, the lunchroom, the kitchen, and the gymnasium. Angela Keszler, Principal and Athletic Director, left the school at 4:30 that day and noticed the change in weather. "I remember walking outside and looking at the sky, and it was a weird color, and the air was super heavy and gross," says Angela. The aftereffects of the tornado left parts of the school in shambles. Angela continues, "Right away, it was chaos. The roof of the gym was already to the ground. There were bricks everywhere. Water was pouring into our elementary."

A canceled practice just 15 minutes before the tornado hit left the school primarily empty. Ethan Kemp, Bus Driver & Custodian, was in the school when it all happened. After getting some weather reports on his phone, he pulled his truck into the building for protection, barely making it inside in time. Ethan states, "I ended up getting a little too close as I saw the weather coming. I turned around and tried to get in the door, fumbling for keys, I barely made it in, and when I did, the door slammed shut on me. A loud bang and dust everywhere. That was it." The fire alarms went off, and the adrenaline started setting in. Ethan continues, "I could barely see halfway down the hall. That's when I ran over to the gym because I knew, about a half hour before, there were kids doing play practice. I didn't even notice that the gym roof was off because it was dark." Ethan was able to let in some people who had lost a house across the street, and luckily, there were no injuries within the school.

Even with all the devastation, Castlewood remains strong. "That's been one thing even before the tornado that stood out to me is that Castlewood is a close-knit community. There's a lot of efforts community-wise to help the schools and the community itself," says Angela. She continues, "We had a lot of donations from area schools just for supplies for us to use for those couple of days because we were in all three churches in town, including the Catholic Church, for the last two days." Surrounding schools aided with supplies and space for the remaining days of the school year. The next school year started on time thanks to the help of those in town and other efforts. Units were brought in from Texas to help make up for lost space; these units are pods with eight classrooms and four makeshift offices that are used for elementary. Two local churches, The American Lutheran Church and the Presbyterian Church donated their space for preschool.

"There already was a lot of community pride here, and this event just enhanced it that much more," says Angela. While rebuilding the school is predicted to take 2-3 years, the town's team spirit perseveres. Despite the challenges of only having one gym, practices remain with well-attended games. Booker Schooley, a player for the boys' basketball teams, comments on how the team is just as close, no matter where the practices and games take place, saying, "We're a tight-knit group of guys, and it doesn't matter if we're hanging out on the basketball court or not. It's not just a basketball team; it's a family." The school is seizing this as an opportunity to make improvements – a vote for a bond happens on March 7th. Angela even praises that enrollment is rising, saying, "We were worried about losing enrollment, and we haven't. We've actually increased."

South Dakota High School basketball is filled with touching stories. SDPB's coverage of boys and girls tournaments expands beyond the championships and into the stories of players, coaches, communities. We're proud to share these stories with you.

“The building will come back, but the people are still here, so that's what makes it special.”
- Angela Keszler

WISh yOU WERE hERE

Hosted by folk singer, author, and rancher Eliza Blue, Wish You Were Here is a traveling show that celebrates rural life across the Northern Plains through stories and songs.

This month’s episode of Wish You Were Here with Eliza Blue takes viewers to Cloverleaf Mine in Lawrence County, South Dakota. Historically this mine was associated with the Galena Mining District in what is now the Black Hills National Forest. Gold was located there in 1878, but due to financial problems and flooding has been closed since 1937. New owner Joe Nonnast is giving the abandoned mine new life by refurbishing and adding to existing structures with an artisan’s touch.

BANkWEST, BOB BURkE

SUPPORTER SPOTLIG h T

South Dakota Public Broadcasting exists partly because of the support we receive from individuals who benefit from our programming. Another source of support comes from businesses, corporations, and organizations that partner with us to carry out our mission. We are grateful for their financial assistance that helps pay for the programs and services SDPB provides. Among our many corporate partners is BankWest, who has partnered with us for over 17 years.

We sat down with Bob Burke, the newly appointed chief operations officer. Bob shares why it is essential for companies to support organizations like SDPB, stating, "BankWest has been around for about 130 years, and we've been part of the communities across the state of South Dakota. It is important for us to support those communities and longstanding organizations. I believe South Dakota Public Broadcasting is one of those that supports communities by providing information and education." He goes on to say that supporting is a commitment that should go on through the years. "You can't just

do it at one level. It's generational. You're helping the building blocks of the younger generations that are going to flourish and then continue on and support these communities."

Bob said if he had to describe SDPB in one word, he would use "window." "It's a window into culture. It's a window into history. It's a window into arts education." He continues, "You could say that it's a TV, but really, it's a window because it's more vast, and it can change and evolve. As you're looking through that window, the world is wide open to you." Bob praises SDPB's ability to "bring families together through education," saying, "It's about getting in and supporting that education and information highway to help develop upper generations, too, but really it's helping bring up the younger generations."

We are so thankful for corporate sponsors like Bob Burke with BankWest, who see the value in supporting our mission to bring information and education to all corners of the state.

DAKOTA LIFE 25TH ANNIVERSARY FLASHBACK

CASEY TIBBS RODEO CENTER

We're celebrating 25 years of Dakota Life. Throughout this anniversary season, we'll revisit some of the people we've met on the show over the years. This month, a conversation with the Executive Director of the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center, Kalyn Bergeson.

In 2009, Dakota Life visited the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center in Ft. Pierre as they held their Grand Opening. Events included a wagon train ride and the unveiling of bronze statues of South Dakota Rodeo star Maddie Goff Newcomb and, of course, International Rodeo Star, Hollywood Actor, and Ft. Pierre native Casey Tibbs. The goal of the Center is to highlight the sport of Rodeo and those who took part in it and to become a rodeo archive for South Dakota. We recently talked with the current Executive Director, Kalyn Bergeson, about the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center today.

SDPB: How is the Center doing today?

Bergeson: It’s doing really well. Honestly, it’s come a long way. I would have thought that Covid might not be the best thing for it, but thanks to South Dakota staying open, we are doing very well in terms of tourism.

SDPB: Do you still get a lot of visitors during the cold weather?

Bergeson: Not near as many, but we are definitely using the Conference Center to its potential, so that brings people in throughout the year. The number of visitors has grown exponentially.

SDPB: Has the mission changed over the years?

Bergeson: We are still preserving and promoting South Dakota Rodeo. We are doing a few updates and bringing in some new displays with some different individuals.

SDPB: What do you hope visitors take away when they visit?

Bergeson: I hope that they take away that we are for the preservation and promotion of all of South Dakota Rodeo and not just Casey Tibbs. As awesome as he was, we’re not just Casey Tibbs. It’s kind of nice knowing that you have a place to go, and you know, your neighbor "Joe" may have been an NFR Qualifier many moons ago. Even if he wasn’t a world champion, it’s kind of fun to learn about him.

SDPB: What’s your favorite part of working there?

Bergeson: The people are awesome. The rodeo community is truly a family, and they make you feel that way.

A WORD ABOUT SUNDAy MORNINGS

Do you eat Sloppy Joes or taverns? Did your aunt take a casserole or a hot dish to the church potluck? If you wonder why grandpa calls you “snickelfritz” or mom makes “puppy chow” during the holidays, A Way with Words might just have the answer. This upbeat and lively public radio show talks about language examined through family, history, and culture. It is not a dull lecture. Hosts Grant Barrett and Martha Barnette guide listeners through our language answering questions that callers bring to them. There's no judgment, but they have been known to settle a friendly bet and rule on a spelling or usage question.

True fact: A century ago, the sign for “telephone” was one fist below your mouth and the other at your ear, as if you were holding an old-fashioned candlestick phone. Today most of us use a thumb and pinkie to indicate “please call me.” With the advent of smartphones one wonders what that sign might look like in another 10 years. A Way with Words is willing to venture a guess. Hear it Sundays at 9:00 am (8 MT) on SDPB Radio.

A Way with Words is just one stop on a fascinating journey Sunday mornings. Wake up to a unique blend of news, features, and the beloved puzzle segment with Puzzlemaster Will Shortz on Weekend Edition Sunday.

AMERICA REFRAMED A DECENT hOME

Directed by Sara Terry, this documentary addresses urgent issues of class and economic (im)mobility through the lives of mobile home park residents who can’t afford housing anywhere else. They are fighting for their dreams -- and their lives -- as private equity firms and wealthy investors buy up parks, making sky-high returns on their investments while squeezing every last penny out of the mobile homeowners who must pay rent for the land they live on.

STORIES FROM ThE STAGE AGAINST ThE ODDS

Sometimes the odds are against us. But with effort and a little luck, they can sway in our favor even when success seems impossible. Vojislav Djordjic finds a way to connect with his son with a disability; Alexis Davis finally confronts the power of addiction and denial; and Irene Smalls discovers that in the face of racism, a great teacher can make a difference.
